Victims of cardiac arrest need immediate Basic Life Support, in order to preserve as much as possible, the flow of blood to the brain and heart and other vital organs, it is essential to gain time pending differentiated help, performing simple acts and practical (BLS) to save lives. Learn how to perform RPC is an interactive process that requires knowledge and skills, but at the same time an act of solidarity, social responsibility, civic consciousness, and a duty of citizenship. Because no one revives alone, it requires a coordinated work of a team, all citizens must join forces in a single goal: Save Lives, the massification of the BLS (RPC, 2014). We conducted an exploratory study that aimed to identify the social representations of basic life support in the general population. We used the technique of free association of words through a short questionnaire, we obtained a sample of 45 participants. The results show that participants were mostly female and 27 that fashion of age was in the age group 40 to 59 years. With regard to social representations, we find an organized structure follows the core: help, help to revive, and save is giving life, are in fact structural and consensual elements in basic life support. In more peripheral elements we find extremely important elements, which can be worked in a way so that the core is more efficient such as to act coordinately as a team in face of an accident, it can thus be successful in practice. The social representation of basic life support does not differ from that referred in the literature on the subject, but it is common knowledge that these skills can only be acquired if they are systematically trained, because they obey an algorithm that if it is not settled theoretical and instrumentally it is not effective in practice.

In this paper I discuss David Shaw’s claim that the body of a terminally ill person can be conceived as a kind of life-support, akin to an artificial ventilator. I claim that this position rests upon an untenable dualism between the mind and the body. Given that dualism continues to be attractive to some thinkers, I attempt to diagnose the reasons why it continues to be attractive, as well as to demonstrate its incoherence, drawing on some recent work in the philosophy of psychology. I conclude that, if my criticisms are sound, Shaw’s attempt to deny the distinction between withdrawal and euthanasia fails.

Background Less than 1% of the general public know how to assess or manage someone who has collapsed. It has been estimated that if 15–20% of the population were capable of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), mortality of out of hospital cardiac arrest could be decreased significantly. Training basic life support (BLS) skills to school children would be the most cost effective way of achieving this goal and ensuring that a large proportion of the population acquire basic life saving skills. Aims To assess retention of knowledge of basic life support 6 months after a single course of instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation designed specifically for school children. Setting School pupils in a rural location in one region of the United Kingdom. Methods A course of instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation – the ‘ABC for life’ programme – specifically designed to teach 10–12-year-old school children basic life support skills. The training session was given to school pupils in a rural location in Northern Ireland. A 22 point questionnaire was used to assess acquisition and retention of basic life support knowledge. Results Children instructed in cardiopulmonary resuscitation showed a highly significant increase in level of knowledge following the training session. While their level of knowledge decreased over a period of 6 months it remained significantly higher than that of a comparable group of children who had never been trained. Conclusion A training programme designed and taught as part of the school curriculum would have a significant impact on public health.

This paper outlines how the immediate life support (ILS) course was incorporated into an undergraduate-nursing curriculum in a university in Northern Ireland. It also reports on how the students perceived the impact of this course on their clinical practice. The aim was to develop the student’s ability to recognise the acutely ill patient and to determine the relevance of this to clinical practice. Prior to this the ILS course was only available to qualified nurses and this paper reports on the first time students were provided with an ILS course in an undergraduate setting. The ILS course was delivered to 89 third year nursing students (Adult Branch) and comprised one full teaching day per week over two weeks. Recognised Advanced Life Support (ALS) instructors, in keeping with the United Kingdom Resuscitation Council guidelines, taught the students. Participants completed a 17 item questionnaire which comprised an open-ended section for student comment. Questionnaire data was analysed descriptively using SSPSS version 15.0. Open-ended responses from the questionnaire data was analysed by content and thematic analysis. Results Student feedback reported that the ILS course helped them understand what constituted the acutely ill patient and the role of the nurse in managing a deteriorating situation. Students also reported that they valued the experience as highlighting gaps in their knowledge Conclusion. The inclusion of the ILS course provides students with necessary skills to assess and manage the deteriorating patient. In addition the data from this study suggest the ILS course should be delivered in an inter-professional setting – i.e taught jointly with medical students. Since the first clinical use of extracorporeal circulation in the last century [1] by John Gibbon and the first successful mechanical support of the left ventricular function by Forest Dodrill [2], the progress of techniques and technologies has helped to develop minimised systems for extracorporeal circulatory and respiratory support. However, the fact is that, despite the advanced technologies used for extracorporeal support, successful application in order to be benefit a critically ill population requires highly trained and skilled teams. Application of these highly sophisticated techniques in life-saving situations inside and/or outside the operating room is a procedure with certain pitfalls and dangers. The aim of this review is to provide a short overview of the technical aspects of extracorporeal circulation, with a look at the recent literature and clinical experiences focusing on technical as well surgical considerations regarding the urgent and/or emergent usage of a central as well as peripheral extracorporeal system.
