This work intends to know the most types of ignition systems, studying its history, the way it works, applications and some examples. The assembly of a distributor less ignition system is also required. All vehicles powered by internal combustion engines need an ignition system that allows this engine to ignite the air-fuel mixture using its ignition system in the best possible manner. The main goal of an ignition system is to obtain a spark having enough energy to start the chemical reaction of the oxygen and the fuel. It took a study dealing with the various types of ignition systems since their creation at the beginning of the last century until 2015. The work starts studying the high tension magneto ignition system and later together with the low tension ignition system, going on with the conventional ignition system and finally accomplishing with the various types of electronic ignition systems. It was studied and implemented an electronic circuit to power a double spark ignition system also known as wasted spark ignition system. This circuit was assembled with an electric pulse generator and powered mechanically by a dc electric motor of the variable rpm type

As correntes pesadas do refino de petróleo podem ser utilizadas para a produção de óleos combustíveis para uso industrial ou marítimo, sendo esse último conhecido como óleo bunker. Para tal, é necessária a diluição dessas correntes pesadas com frações de refino mais leves para ajuste da viscosidade. Enquanto o uso industrial do óleo combustível vem sendo significativamente reduzido em função de restrições ambientais, o mercado de óleo bunker apresenta crescimento importante face a expansão do comércio marítimo mundial. No Brasil, há um aumento da produção de petróleos pesados, extrapesados e asfálticos, que exigem complexos esquemas de refino para a sua conversão em frações mais leves. Dessa forma, ocorre uma redução da quantidade de correntes disponíveis para a produção de bunker, além da variação da qualidade das correntes usadas na sua formulação. Esta dissertação avalia a utilização de petróleos pesados e asfálticos na produção de bunker, sem a necessidade do processamento tradicional em refinarias de petróleo. A comparação da qualidade de ignição e de combustão da nova formulação deste produto com o combustível marítimo preparado a partir de correntes residuais é realizada por duas metodologias diferentes. Após a realização de um pré-tratamento, a mistura formulada a partir dos cortes dos petróleos apresenta melhor desempenho que os combustíveis formulados com as correntes residuais. Além disso, este trabalho compara o efeito de diferentes diluentes e a contribuição da corrente pesada utilizada na qualidade de ignição e de combustão do produto

Metallic tantalum has a high commercial value due to intrinsic properties like excellent ductility, corrosion resistance, high melt and boiling points and good electrical and thermal conductivities. Nowadays, it is mostly used in the manufacture of capacitors, due to excellent dielectric properties of its oxides. In the nature, tantalum occurs in the form of oxide and it is extracted mainly from tantalite-columbite ores. The tantalum is usually produced by the reduction of its oxide, using reductants like carbon, silicon, calcium, magnesium and aluminum. Among these techniques, the aluminothermic reduction has been used as the industrial method to produce niobium, tantalum and their alloys, due to the easy removal of the Al and Al2O3 of the system, easing further refining. In conventional aluminothermic reduction an electrical resistance is used to trigger the reaction. This reaction self-propagates for all the volume of material. In this work, we have developed a novel technique of aluminothermic reduction that uses the hydrogen plasma to trigger the reaction. The results obtained by XRD, SEM and EDS show that is possible to obtain a compound rich in tantalum through this technique of aluminothermic reduction in the plasma reactor

This work presents research into the addition of chamotte obtained from the ceramic isolator of unusable spark plugs in formulations of material mixes for standard white ceramic material with aluminum oxide bases. After the physical chemical characterization of the primary materials, standard clay and the chamotte, three mixtures were prepared with concentrations of 10, 20 and 30% chamotte by weight in relation to the standard clay. The test samples underwent heating at a rate of 30 0C/min to levels that included 100o , 200o , 300o, 400o, 500o e 600 0C and also we submitted to three distinct burn temperatures: 1450o, 1500o e 1550 0C, remaining at these temperatures for 2 hour periods. After sintering, the physical and microstructural properties of the different test samples were measured and analyzed. The results show that the materials obtained present good technical properties and that the chamotte can be reutilized as an additive in the production of white ceramic material with an aluminum oxide base

The aluminothermic reduction consists in an exothermic reaction between a metallic oxide and aluminum to produce the metal and the scum. The extracted melted metal of that reaction usually comes mixed with particles of Al2O3 resulting of the reduction, needing of subsequent refine to eliminate the residual impure as well as to eliminate porosities. Seeking to obtain a product in powder form with nanometric size or even submicrometric, the conventional heat source of the reaction aluminothermic , where a resistor is used (ignitor) as ignition source was substituted, for the plasma, that acts more efficient way in each particle of the sample. In that work it was used as metallic oxide the niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) for the exothermal reaction Nb2O5 + Al. Amounts stoichiometric, substoichiometric and superestoichiometric of aluminum were used. The Nb2O5 powder was mixed with aluminum powder and milled in planetarium of high energy for a period of 6 hours. Those powders were immerged in plasm that acts in a punctual way in each particle, transfering heat, so that the reaction can be initiate and spread integrally for the whole volume of the particle. The mixture of Nb2O5 + Al was characterized through the particle size analysis by laser and X-ray diffraction (DRX) and the obtained product of reaction was characterized using the electronic microscopy of sweeping (MEV) and the formed phases were analyzed by DRX. Niobium powders with inferior sizes to 1 mm were obtained by that method. It is noticed, through the analysis of the obtained results, that is possible to accomplish the aluminothermic reduction process by plasma ignition with final particles with inferior sizes to the original oxide

Ceramic materials the alumina base are large industrial applications. They are required for these products, specific characteristics obtained by following strict criteria during the manufacturing process. However, after life, not always these products are reused by a suitable waste management process. In ceramist context, advance research aimed at the reuse of waste aimed at obtaining ceramics and composite materials, with marked reduction of conventional raw materials. Aiming to generate scientific, technological and environmental contribution, this work studied to obtain a composite of alumina ceramic (Al2O3) and sodium beta alumina (NaAl11O17 ), and as starting materials the residue of the ceramic insulator of spark plugs, as a source alumina (Al2O3) powder and unusable sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) of fire extinguishers, as a source of sodium oxide (Na2O). The final ceramic product was obtained from a conventional mixture of sodium aluminum oxide in appropriate molar proportions. Sample spark plugs were obtained, discarded by lifetime, specific to a manufacturer, which, after passing through mechanical stress (grinding, magnetic purification, washing, drying and grinding the high energy), which resulted in residue powder with ceramic content of 84.34 % alumina (Al2O3), found by FRX chemical analysis, the phases present and identified by DRX. The dry chemical fire extinguisher, baking soda-based (NaHCO3) with expired, was obtained through direct collection of the waste generated during maintenance. Subjected to heat treatment at 120 °C , the NaHCO3 powder was decomposed in sodium oxide ( Na2O), which, subjected to chemical analysis (FRX) and mineralogical (DRX) revealed a content of 86.62 % sodium oxide (Na2O) . In the following steps the experimental procedure, chemical formulations were made on a molar basis of the starting material (1:9, 1:10 and 1:11 de Na2O/ Al2O3) inclusion of additives, milling parameters, sieve analysis, dilatometry, conformation of specimens, sintering in firing steps at 800 °C , 1000 °C and 1.200 °C with varying stays 30 , 60 and 120 minutes in each of the levels. The characterization of the final product was made by the following physical tests: water absorption, porosity, linear shrinkage, mineralogical analysis by DRX and microstructural analysis by MEV. A higher formation of sodium beta alumina (NaAl11O17), in sintered specimens in levels of 1.200 °C and 120 minutes, despite the prevailing coexistence of alpha phase alumina (Al2O3). From the results obtained opens up prospects for the reuse of waste studied in this work, the potter context and in other technological areas.

É crescente o interesse nos materiais cerâmicos, devido as suas características como baixa massa específica e maior resistência a ambientes agressivos do que a maioria das ligas metálicas. Este trabalho tem o objetivo de produzir a partir de material descartado, cerâmicas em diferentes temperaturas de sinterização e avaliar a sua tensão de ruptura em ensaio de flexão de três pontos e a confiança desta medida. Devido ao custo de produzir pó de vidro, tanto pelo alto gasto de energia para fundir a matéria-prima como pelo consumo de minerais industriais, foi proposto utilizar vidro de para-brisa obsoleto reduzindo despesas operacionais e definindo um destino econômico e ambiental viável para estes rejeitos. A metodologia consistiu-se na obtenção do pó de vidro com características adequadas para ser conformado e sinterizado. Foram usadas duas composições e quatro tratamentos térmicos para obter oito materiais. Uma composição com apenas o pó oriundo da moagem de para-brisa e outra com este pó mais 4% de óxido de nióbio. A resistência à flexão dos produtos obtidos foi avaliada. Utilizou-se a estatística de Weibull para caracterizar estes resultados. Os resultados obtidos indicam que o material de composição pó de vidro e temperatura final de sinterização de 650C obteve a maior resistência mecânica entre os materiais sintetizados. A adição do óxido de nióbio provoca um decréscimo na resistência mecânica se comparada com o material sem a adição deste óxido. Entretanto, comparando as duas composições na mesma temperatura final de sinterização, a adição de óxido de nióbio provocou um aumento no módulo de Weibull, excetuando-se dois de oito materiais obtidos. As diferentes composições e temperaturas de sinterização afetaram as propriedades mecânicas dos materiais obtidos.

Os sistemas de comunicações óticas têm evoluído rapidamente e, como consequência, a potência dos sinais óticos propagados na fibra tem vindo a aumentar. A propagação de sinais de elevada potência pode resultar na degradação e/ou destruição da fibra ótica. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo do impacto da propagação de sinais óticos com elevadas potências na degradação e redução do tempo de vida útil das fibras óticas. Estudou-se este tipo de degradação das fibras óticas a dois níveis: degradação do revestimento de fibras sujeitas a curvaturas apertadas e ignição e propagação do efeito rastilho que leva a destruição da fibra ótica. Para a concretização deste estudo, caracterizou-se experimentalmente o aumento de temperatura no revestimento de fibras óticas sujeitas a curvaturas de diâmetro reduzido e na presença de sinais com elevada potência. Tendo-se desenvolvido um modelo analítico para descrever o aquecimento do revestimento da fibra. No âmbito do efeito rastilho em fibra ótica, estudou-se experimentalmente, em diversos tipos de fibra, as principais propriedades deste fenómeno, nomeadamente, a potência ótica de limiar necessária para a sua ignição e propagação, a velocidade de propagação e as características da cadeia de bolhas formada no núcleo da fibra ótica durante a propagação deste efeito. Desenvolveu-se, ainda, um modelo teórico para simular a propagação do efeito rastilho, tendo sido validado e complementado através de resultados experimentais. Por fim, desenvolveram-se e implementaram-se técnicas para detetar e interromper a propagação do efeito rastilho, como forma de limitar a extensão de fibra destruída e proteger os equipamentos óticos da rede.

Os biocombustíveis têm estado na linha da frente das políticas energéticas mundiais visto que as suas vantagens conseguem colmatar as incertezas e resolver alguns dos problemas associados aos combustíveis fósseis. O biodiesel tem provado ser um combustível muito fiável, alternativo ao petrodiesel. É uma mistura de ésteres alquílicos produzidos a partir de óleos vegetais e gorduras animais através de uma reacção de transesterificação. Como combustível, o biodiesel é economicamente viável, socialmente responsável, tecnicamente compatível e ambientalmente amigável. O principal desafio associado ao seu desenvolvimento tem a ver com a escolha de matéria-prima para a sua produção. Nos países do terceiro mundo, óleos alimentares são mais importantes para alimentar pessoas do que fazer funcionar carros. Esta tese tem como objectivos produzir/processar biodiesel a partir de recursos endógenos de Timor-Leste e medir/prever as propriedades termodinâmicas do biodiesel, a partir das dos esteres alquílicos. A síntese do biodiesel a partir dos óleos de Aleurites moluccana, Jatropha curcas e borras de café foram aqui estudados. As propriedades termodinâmicas como densidade, viscosidade, tensão superficial, volatilidade e velocidade do som também foram medidas e estimadas usando modelos preditivos disponíveis na literatura, incluindo as equações de estado CPA e soft-SAFT. Timor-Leste é um país muito rico em recursos naturais, mas a maioria da população ainda vive na pobreza e na privação de acesso a serviços básicos e condições de vida decentes. A exploração de petróleo e gás no mar de Timor tem sido controlado pelo Fundo Petrolífero. O país ainda carece de electricidade e combustíveis que são cruciais para materializar as políticas de redução da pobreza. Como solução, o governo timorense criou recentemente o Plano Estratégico de Desenvolvimento a 20 anos cujas prioridades incluem trazer o desenvolvimento do petróleo do mar para a costa sul de Timor-Leste e desenvolver as energias renováveis. É neste último contexto que o biodiesel se insere. O seu desenvolvimento no país poderá ser uma solução para o fornecimento de electricidade, a criação de empregos e sobretudo o combate contra a pobreza e a privação. Para ser usado como combustível, no entanto, o biodiesel deve possuir propriedades termodinâmicas coerentes com as especificadas nas normas da ASTM D6751 (nos Estados Unidos) ou EN 14214 (na Europa) para garantir uma adequada ignição, atomização e combustão do biodiesel no motor.

The main motivation for the work presented here began with previously conducted experiments with a programming concept at the time named "Macro". These experiments led to the conviction that it would be possible to build a system of engine control from scratch, which could eliminate many of the current problems of engine management systems in a direct and intrinsic way. It was also hoped that it would minimize the full range of software and hardware needed to make a final and fully functional system. Initially, this paper proposes to make a comprehensive survey of the state of the art in the specific area of software and corresponding hardware of automotive tools and automotive ECUs. Problems arising from such software will be identified, and it will be clear that practically all of these problems stem directly or indirectly from the fact that we continue to make comprehensive use of extremely long and complex "tool chains". Similarly, in the hardware, it will be argued that the problems stem from the extreme complexity and inter-dependency inside processor architectures. The conclusions are presented through an extensive list of "pitfalls" which will be thoroughly enumerated, identified and characterized. Solutions will also be proposed for the various current issues and for the implementation of these same solutions. All this final work will be part of a "proof-of-concept" system called "ECU2010". The central element of this system is the before mentioned "Macro" concept, which is an graphical block representing one of many operations required in a automotive system having arithmetic, logic, filtering, integration, multiplexing functions among others. The end result of the proposed work is a single tool, fully integrated, enabling the development and management of the entire system in one simple visual interface. Part of the presented result relies on a hardware platform fully adapted to the software, as well as enabling high flexibility and scalability in addition to using exactly the same technology for ECU, data logger and peripherals alike. Current systems rely on a mostly evolutionary path, only allowing online calibration of parameters, but never the online alteration of their own automotive functionality algorithms. By contrast, the system developed and described in this thesis had the advantage of following a "clean-slate" approach, whereby everything could be rethought globally. In the end, out of all the system characteristics, "LIVE-Prototyping" is the most relevant feature, allowing the adjustment of automotive algorithms (eg. Injection, ignition, lambda control, etc.) 100% online, keeping the engine constantly working, without ever having to stop or reboot to make such changes. This consequently eliminates any "turnaround delay" typically present in current automotive systems, thereby enhancing the efficiency and handling of such systems.

Ao longo dos últimos anos, Portugal não tem conseguido travar os incêndios florestais, tanto no que diz respeito número de ocorrências como no que se refere à dimensão das áreas ardidas, sobretudo durante o período estival, quando dominam temperaturas elevadas e a dessecação dos combustíveis gera um ambiente propício à propagação dos incêndios, cuja ignição, em mais de 90% dos casos, tem origem em atos humanos, negligentes e intencionais. Com o objetivo de melhor compreender a origem destes incêndios florestais, o presente estudo visa analisar as causas responsáveis pela ignição dos incêndios florestais em Portugal e acompanhar o modo como elas foram evoluindo, quer ao longo do tempo, quer em termos da sua distribuição espacial, no período compreendido entre 1996 e 2010.
