Study of consumption rate and gaseous pollutant emission from engine tests simulating real work conditions, using spark point manually controlled and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in diverse proportion levels. The objective of this work is to re-examine the potential of the EGR conception, a well-known method of combustion control, employed together electronic fuel injection and three-way catalytic converter closed-loop control at a spark ignition engine, verifying the performance characteristics and technical availability of this conception to improve pollution control, fuel economy at low torque drive condition and to improve the engine exhaust components useful life. The pollutant emissions and consumption levels under operational conditions simulations were analysed and compared with the expected by concerning theory and real tests performed by EGR equipped engines by factory. The push for improved fuel economy and reduced emissions has led to great achievements in engine performance and control. These achievements have increased the efficiency and power density of gasoline engines dramatically in the last two decades. With the added power density, thermal management of the engine has become increasingly important. Therefore it is critical to have accurate temperature and heat transfer models as well as data to validate them. With the recent adoption of the 2025 Corporate Average Fuel Economy(CAFE) standard, there has been a push to improve the thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines even further. Lean and dilute combustion regimes along with waste heat recovery systems are being explored as options for improving efficiency. In order to understand how these technologies will impact engine performance and each other, this research sought to analyze the engine from both a 1st law energy balance perspective, as well as from a 2nd law exergy analysis. This research also provided insights into the effects of various parameters on in-cylinder temperatures and heat transfer as well as provides data for validation of other models. It was found that the engine load was the dominant factor for the energy distribution, with higher loads resulting in lower coolant heat transfer and higher brake work and exhaust energy. From an exergy perspective, the exhaust system provided the best waste heat recovery potential due to its significantly higher temperatures compared to the cooling circuit. EGR and lean combustion both resulted in lower combustion chamber and exhaust temperatures; however, in most cases the increased flow rates resulted in a net increase in the energy in the exhaust. The exhaust exergy, on the other hand, was either increased or decreased depending on the location in the exhaust system and the other operating conditions. The effects of dilution from lean operation and EGR were compared using a dilution ratio, and the results showed that lean operation resulted in a larger increase in efficiency than the same amount of dilution with EGR. Finally, a method for identifying fuel spray impingement from piston surface temperature measurements was found. This paper presents a new methodology for measurement of the instantaneous average exhaust mass flow rate in reciprocating internal combustion engines to be used to determinate real driving emissions on light duty vehicles, as part of a Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS). Firstly a flow meter, named MIVECO flow meter, was designed based on a Pitot tube adapted to exhaust gases which are characterized by moisture and particle content, rapid changes in flow rate and chemical composition, pulsating and reverse flow at very low engine speed. Then, an off-line methodology was developed to calculate the instantaneous average flow, considering the ?square root error? phenomenon. The paper includes the theoretical fundamentals, the developed flow meter specifications, the calibration tests, the description of the proposed off-line methodology and the results of the validation test carried out in a chassis dynamometer, where the validity of the mass flow meter and the methodology developed are demonstrated.

Automotive catalysts are the most effective short-term answer to air pollution from automobiles. Since strict control of exhaust emissions is, or will be,covered by legislation in most developed countries in the world, catalytic devices will be increasingly fitted to cars. There is consequently an urgent need for the development of catalysts that will not compete for scarce precious metal resources. A number of problems have already been identified in connection with base metal catalysts but quantitative investigations are lacking. The base metal reduction catalysts developed by Imperial Chemical Industries Limited, catalysts and Chemical Group, in collaboration with the Air Pollution Control Laboratory, B L Cars Limited for automotive emission control, are susceptible to de-activation by three major mechanisms. These are: physical loss of the wash-coat (a high surface area coating which supports the active species), aggregation of the active species and poisoning by fuel and engine oil additives. This thesis is especially concerned with the first two of these and attempts to indicate the relative magnitude .of their effect on the activity of. the catalysts. Aggregation of the active species or sintering, as it is loosely called, was studied by using impregnated granules to overcome effects due to the loss of the wash-coat. Samples were aged in a synthetic exhaust gas, free from poisons, and metal crystallite sizes were measured by scanning-electron microscopy. The increase in particle size was correlated with the loss in catalytic activity. In order to maintain a link with the real conditions of service a number of monolithic catalysts were tested in an engine-dynamometer and several previously tested endurance catalysts were examined. A mechanism is proposed for the break-up and subsequent 10s.5 of the wash-coat and suggestions for improved resistance to loss of the' coating and active species are proposed.

Atualmente, os aterros sanitários representam uma solução para a gestão e tratamento dos resíduos sólidos urbanos. Da deposição, ocorrem duas formas de emissões ao longo do tempo, a produção de biogás e de lixiviados, que resultam sobretudo da decomposição da matéria orgânica. Um dos principais constituintes do biogás é o metano, o qual tem elevado poder calorífico. O presente trabalho aborda, a maximização da valorização energética em aterros sanitários, recorrendo a equipamentos baseados no Ciclo Orgânico de Rankine (ORC) para a produção de eletricidade. É apresentado como caso de estudo a central de valorização energética da Suldouro, em Sermonde, que produz eletricidade a partir do biogás resultante da decomposição da matéria orgânica depositada em aterro. O biogás é utilizado como combustível para os motogeradores utilizados para o seu aproveitamento energético, sendo que apenas cerca de 40% do potencial energético contido no biogás é transformado em eletricidade, registando-se perdas sobretudo nas emissões dos gases de exaustão e na água de arrefecimento dos motores. Para avaliação do potencial da recuperação energética dos gases de escape é avaliado o desempenho termodinâmico do ciclo ORC. Para tal foi desenvolvida uma ferramenta em MATLAB utilizando como modelo a configuração do ORC com recuperador de calor. O cálculo das propriedades termodinâmicas dos fluidos foi obtido através da criação de uma sub-rotina que chama o programa CoolProp. Este programa restitui propriedades como a entalpia, entropia, pressões e temperaturas em cada ponto do ciclo, permitindo assim ao utilizador otimizar o tempo na obtenção de resultados. A avaliação económica é fundamental na tomada de decisões por parte do investidor e dos financiadores do projeto. É então apresentada a análise económica e efetuada uma análise de sensibilidade, onde foram efetuadas variações nos vetores mais importantes de forma a poder avaliar-se o impacto em termos da sua rentabilidade. A ferramenta desenvolvida permite obter de forma prática, os três indicadores económicos extremamente influentes no que se refere à tomada de decisão. A utilização dos sistemas ORC e os seus benefícios não se esgotam na maximização dos aproveitamentos da valorização energética em aterros sanitários. Também a recuperação de calor para a produção de energia elétrica pode ter um impacto importante em muitos setores intensivos de energia, contribuindo significativamente para a redução do consumo e aumentando a eficiência de todo o processo de produção.

A la física o a l’enginyeria es defineix com fregament o fricció a la resistència que s'oposa a la rotació o al lliscament d'un cos sobre un altre, o també a la força que apareix en la superfície de contacte de dos cossos quan s'intenta lliscar un sobre un altre. El fregament ha estat fins avui dia un gran problema físic, això és degut a que genera imperfeccions, especialment microscòpiques, entre les superfícies en contacte. Aleshores és quan apareix la tribologia. La tribologia és la ciència que estudia la fricció, el desgast i la lubricació de superfícies en contacte. El lliscament entre superfícies sòlides es caracteritza generalment per un alt coeficient de fricció i un gran desgast a causa de les propietats específiques de lessuperfícies. La lubricació consisteix en la introducció d'una capa intermèdia d'un material aliè entre les superfícies en moviment. En aquest projecte hem intentat aplicar tècniques i mètodes de control els quals puguin arribar a millorar i perfeccionar els sistemes de mesura i control a nivell industrial i/o particular. En el nostre cas ha estat l’estudi dels olis lubricants usats en motors de combustió interna de variats vehicles com motocicletes, automòbils, camions o vaixells. Hem introduït una millora d’automatització mitjançant un circuit pneumàtic al captador de partícules, hi hem introduït una tècnica per captar partícules a partir de filtres de membrana, hem estudiat les mostres i llurs ferrogrames i membranes amb la finalitat de detectar les anomalies dels motors. L’objectiu del treball és l’estudi del desgast originat en motors de combustió interna, majoritàriament, Dièsel de camions, automòbils i vaixells. Això, comprèn la captació de partícules en ferrografies, la seva observació i anàlisi en microscopi, la seva classificació, comparació i la detecció d’anomalies en els motors. Per altra banda, també s’aprofundirà en les tècniques d’anàlisi, la lubricació i manteniment dels motors i el nou disseny i validació d’un captador de partícules automatitzat

Alfa Laval Aalborg Oy designs and manufactures waste heat recovery systems utilizing extended surfaces. The waste heat recovery boiler considered in this thesis is a water-tube boiler where exhaust gas is used as the convective heat transfer medium and water or steam flowing inside the tubes is subject to cross-flow. This thesis aims to contribute to the design of waste heat recovery boiler unit by developing a numerical model of the H-type finned tube bundle currently used by Alfa Laval Aalborg Oy to evaluate the gas-side heat transfer performance. The main objective is to identify weaknesses and potential areas of development in the current H-type finned tube design. In addition, numerical simulations for a total of 15 cases with varying geometric parameters are conducted to investigate the heat transfer and pressure drop performance dependent on H-type fin geometry. The investigated geometric parameters include fin width and height, fin spacing, and fin thickness. Comparison between single and double tube type configuration is also conducted. Based on the simulation results, the local heat transfer and flow behaviour of the H-type finned tube is presented including boundary layer development between the fins, the formation of recirculation zone behind the tubes, and the local variations of flow velocity and temperature within the tube bundle and on the fin surface. Moreover, an evaluation of the effects of various fin parameters on heat transfer and pressure drop performance of H-type finned tube bundle has been provided. It was concluded that from the studied parameters fin spacing and fin width had the most significant effect on tube bundle performance and the effect of fin thickness was the least important. Furthermore, the results suggested that the heat transfer performance would increase due to enhanced turbulence if the current double tube configuration is replaced with single tube configuration, but further investigation and experimental measurements are required in order to validate the results.

There is growing evidence of a substantial decline in pollinators within Europe and North America, most likely caused by multiple factors such as diseases, poor nutrition, habitat loss, insecticides, and environmental pollution. Diesel exhaust could be a contributing factor to this decline, since we found that diesel exhaust rapidly degrades floral volatiles, which honey bees require for flower recognition. In this study, we exposed eight of the most common floral volatiles to diesel exhaust in order to investigate whether it can affect volatile mediated plant-pollinator interaction. Exposure to diesel exhaust altered the blend of common flower volatiles significantly: myrcene was considerably reduced, β-ocimene became undetectable, and β-caryophyllene was transformed into its cis-isomer isocaryophyllene. Proboscis extension response (PER) assays showed that the alterations of the blend reduced the ability of honey bees to recognize it. The chemically reactive nitrogen oxides fraction of diesel exhaust gas was identified as capable of causing degradation of floral volatiles.
