The painting activity is one of the most complex and important activities in automobile manufacturing. The inherent complexity of the painting activity and the frequent need for repainting usually turn the painting process into a bottleneck in automobile assembly plants, which is reflected in higher operating costs and longer overall cycle times. One possible approach for optimizing the performance of the paint shop is to improve the efficiency of the color planning. This can be accomplished by evaluating the relative merits of a set of vehicle painting plans. Since this problem has a multicriteria nature, we resort to the multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) methodology to tackle it. A recent trend in the MCDA field is the development of hybrid approaches that are used to achieve operational synergies between different methods. Here we apply, for the first time, an integrated approach that combines the strengths of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE), aided by Geometrical Analysis for Interactive Aid (GAIA), to the problem of assessing alternative vehicle painting plans. The management of the assembly plant found the results of value and is currently using them in order to schedule the painting activities such that an enhancement of the operational efficiency of the paint shop is obtained. This efficiency gain has allowed the management to bid for a new automobile model to be assembled at this specific plant.

Työn tavoitteena oli luoda yritykseen soveltuva, toimiva laatujärjestelmän kirjallinen kuvaus sekä parantaa laadun hallintaa. Laatutoimintojen kehittämisessä perustana käytettiin laatujärjestelmästandardia SFS-EN ISO 9001. Työn lähtökohtana oli perusteellinen nykytilan selvitys. Saatujen tulosten perusteella voitiin kohdistaa toimenpiteet oikein, jolloin laadun parannus oli merkittävää ja mitattavissa. Lähtötilanteessa havaittiin suuria laatuongelmia niin asiakkaiden keskuudessa kuin yrityksen sisäisissä toiminnoissa, verrattaessa ISO 9001 standardiin. Prosessit pyrittiin kirjaamaan sekä aloitustilanteessaettä havaittujen puutteiden korjaamisen jälkeen. Tästä dokumentaatiosta muodostettiin pohja yrityksen laatujärjestelmän kuvaukselle - laatukäsikirjalle. Dokumentoitua työ- tai toiminto-ohjetta kehitettiin edelleen vastaamaan parasta havaittua toimintatapaa.Työ osoitti laadun hallinnan parantuneen merkittävästi, kun prosessi on onnistuttu kuvaamaan käytännönläheisesti ja yksinkertaisesti. Ratkaisevan tärkeää on prosessin suorittamiseen osallistuvan henkilöstön panos kuvattaessa ja kehitettäessä toimintoa. Ilman henkilöstön sitouttamista kuvaukset ja ohjeet jäävät vain hyödyttömiksi papereiksi, joita ei noudateta eikä päivitetä. Laadun, kuten minkään muunkaan parametrin, kehitystä on mahdoton seurata ilman selkeitä ja yksiselitteisiä mittareita. Työssä luotiin tärkeimpiinprosesseihin kehitystä ilmaisevat laatumittarit. Parhaimmillaan havaittiin maalaamossa suoritettujen toimenpiteiden seurauksena virheellisten kappaleiden osuuden pudonneen kertaluokkaa pienemmäksi. Laatujärjestelmän kehitystyö osoittautui tämänkin kokoisessa yrityksessä erittäin työlääksi ja aikaa vieväksi. Kuitenkin on selvää, että laadunhallinnan parantuessa ja todistusaineiston karttuessa onnistumisten kautta, lisääntyy koko yrityksen usko laadun parantamisen tärkeyteen ja näin nopeuttaa joskus kipeidenkin uudistusten läpivientiä.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a precisão e acurácia de avaliadores com o uso de escala diagramática, em estimativas de desfolha provocada por doenças em soja. A escala apresenta seis níveis de severidade de desfolha (5, 15, 45, 65, 85 e 100%). As imagens utilizadas para avaliação foram obtidas em parcelas atacadas por ferrugem asiática (Phakopsora pachyrhizi), apresentando diferentes níveis de desfolha. A validação foi feita por dez avaliadores, utilizando-se como parâmetro de comparação dados reais da área com cobertura foliar, obtidos através de processamento de imagens, nos softwares Paint Shop Pro 4, e Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Quando não foi utilizada a escala, os avaliadores apresentaram tendência de subestimar a severidade de desfolha nos níveis mais baixos e de superestimar em níveis altos. A acurácia e precisão dos avaliadores aumentaram com o auxílio da escala diagramática.

El proyecto se ha realizado en los plazos y términos en que estaba previsto. Este sitio web (http://www.catedra-orl-uva.org) consta de una plantilla gráfica, que es la que utiliza el sistema para mostrar los resultados e información general en un entorno adecuado, intuitivo, sencillo y agradable. Se ha creado un fondo general en el que se van incorporando elementos tales como botones o solapas, escudo de la Universidad, titulares, etcétera; de manera que el estudiante pueda acceder intuitivamente a los diferentes contenidos de la página. Para realizar la plantilla se han utilizado diversas herramientas de creación gráfica como PhotoShop, Adove PhotodeLuxe, o Paint Shop Pro. Este entorno gráfico sirve para mostrar la programación web. El sitio web está escrito en XML con transformación XSLT, y se apoya en PHP y bases de datos MySQL. También se utiliza Java para facilitar algunas herramientas, como el editor de textos. Esta misma tecnología se utiliza para construir el panel de administración que servirá para controlar todo el sitio web, permitirá cualquier tipo de actualización y control total sobre los contenidos del sitio web. Ya desarrollado el diseño de la página, se está procediendo a dotarla de contenidos: textos, imágenes, plantillas de autoevaluación, etcétera.

Esta dissertação tem por objetivo desenvolver e aplicar um modelo para avaliação do impacto da implantação da Manutenção Produtiva Total (TPM) nos indicadores de desempenho relacionados à atuação da manutenção na área de pintura em uma indústria automobilística. Para o desenvolvimento do modelo de avaliação utilizaram-se alguns conceitos do Balanced Scorecard (BSC). Inicialmente é apresentada a fundamentação teórica do trabalho através da abordagem dos principais assuntos relacionados ao TPM e indicadores de desempenho. Posteriormente é desenvolvido e aplicado o modelo de avaliação, observando-se quais os resultados obtidos com a implantação do TPM. As conclusões deste trabalho indicam que a implantação do TPM foi positiva para o departamento de pintura da indústria automobilística pesquisada. Além disso, é observada a possibilidade de aplicação do modelo desenvolvido em outros ramos da indústria.

The desire to create unique things and give free rain to one's imagination served as a powerful impetus to the development of digital art and design software. The commoner was the use of computers the wider variety of professional software was developed. Nowadays the creators and computer designers are receiving more and more new and advanced programs that allow their ideas becoming virtual reality. This research paper looks at the history of the development of graphic editors from the simplest to the most modern and advanced. This brief survey includes the history of different graphic editors’ creation, their features and abilities. This paper highlights the two basic branches of graphic editors – these that are in free use and commercial graphic editors design software. The researcher selected the most powerful and influential graphic editors design software brands like Paint.NET and GIMP among free software and commercial Adobe Photoshop. This paper also dwells upon the way digital art transferred from the exclusively professional business into the hobby for ordinary users. This research paper bears implications for those who are interested in features and potentiality of most popular graphic editors design software.

The article analyses the evolution of the representation of the automobile inserted in the natural and urban environment in the Contemporary Art, from the appearance of the first cars in the beginning of the 20th century until the present day. The text compares the diverse attitudes and analysis of some representative artists who have used the image of the machine in general and the car in particular in their aesthetic discourse, using as a conductive thread the metaphor of the life cycle (birth, growth, feeding, reproduction and death). It deals with the discovery, the development and the coexistence between human and the automobile and its interpretation as a basic element of the artistic work. The text connects the image of the automobile located in the contemporary industrial landscape utilizing the artist references who have integrated the car in their work inside the natural or artificial environment characteristic of each moment. At the same time, the article goes deeply into the relationship of romantic ruin and natural landscape and the evolution of the industrial and architectural modern environment, through the work of the artists who has used the car as an inhabitant of the landscape.

This paper deals with the traditional permutation flow shop scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing mean flowtime, therefore reducing in-process inventory. A new heuristic method is proposed for the scheduling problem solution. The proposed heuristic is compared with the best one considered in the literature. Experimental results show that the new heuristic provides better solutions regarding both the solution quality and computational effort.

This paper presents a technological viability study of wastewater treatment in an automobile industry by an anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor containing immobilized biomass (AnSBBR) with a draft tube. The reactor was operated in 8-h cycles, with agitation of 400 rpm, at 30 degrees C and treating 2.0 L wastewater per cycle. Initially the efficiency and stability of the reactor were studied when supplied with nutrients and alkalinity. Removal efficiency of 88% was obtained at volumetric loading rate (VLR) of 3.09 mg COD/L day. When VLR was increased to 6.19 mg COD/L day the system presented stable operation with reduction in efficiency of 71%. In a second stage the AnSBBR was operated treating wastewater in natura, i.e., without nutrients supplementation, only with alkalinity, thereby changing feed strategy. The first strategy consisted in feeding 2.0 L batch wise (10 min), the second in feeding 1.0 L of influent batch wise (10 min) and an additional 1.0 L fed-batch wise (4 h), both dewatering 2.0 L of the effluent in 10 min. The third one maintained 1.0 L of treated effluent in the reactor, without discharging, and 1.0 L of influent was fed fed-batch wise (4 h) with dewatering 1.0 L of the effluent in 10 min. For all implemented strategies (VLR of 1.40, 2.57 and 2.61 mg COD/L day) the system presented stability and removal efficiency of approximately 80%. These results show that the AnSBBR presents operational flexibility, as the influent can be fed according to industry availability. In industrial processes this is a considerable advantage, as the influent may be prone to variations. Moreover, for all the investigated conditions the kinetic parameters were obtained from fitting a first-order model to the profiles of organic matter, total volatile acids and methane concentrations. Analysis of the kinetic parameters showed that the best strategy is feeding 1.0 L of influent batchwise (10 min) and 1.0 L fed-batch wise (4 h) in 8-h cycle. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Four different architectural acrylic paint formulations were tested by exposure to weathering for 7 years in the urban site of Sao Paulo and the coastal site of Ubatuba, South-East Brazil. Surface discolorations and detachment of coatings were assessed and the components of the biofilms were identified by standard microbiological methods. The painted surfaces of the mortar panels were much more discolored in Ubatuba, where major components of the biofilms were the cyanobacteria Gloeocapsa and Scytonema. In two of the four paint films, a pink coloration on the surface at this coastal site, caused mainly by red-pigmented Gloeocapsa, produced high discoloration ratings, but low degradation (as measured by detachment). Biofilms in Sao Paulo contained the same range of phototrophs, but in lesser quantity. However, fungal numbers, as determined by plating, were higher. Detachment ratings in this urban site were only slightly lower than in Ubatuba. The matt paint performed worst of the four, with silk and semi-gloss finishes giving lowest biodeterioration ratings. The matt elastomeric paint performed well at both sites, apart from becoming almost 100% covered by the pink biofilm in Ubatuba. Unpainted mortar panels became intensely discolored with a black biofilm, showing that all the paints had achieved one of their objectives, that of surface protection of the substrate. The value of PVC (pigment volume content) as an indicator of coatings biosusceptibility, is questioned. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of Pigment Volume Content (PVC) on fungal growth on acrylic paint formulations with and without biocide, exposed to weathering in three different climatic regions in Brazil for four years, was studied Latex paints. with PVC of 30%, 35% and 50%, were applied to autoclaved aerated concrete blocks pre-covered with acrylic sealer and acrylic plaster They were exposed to equatorial, tropical and temperate climates in north, south-east, and south Brazil Cladosporium was the most abundant fungal genus detected in the biofilm on the surfaces of all paint formulations at all sites after four years Heaviest fungal colonization occurred in the tropical south-east and lightest in the temperate south of the country, but more phototrophs, principally cyanobacteria, were detected in the equatorial region PVC and presence of biocides were shown to be of less importance than environmental conditions (irradiance, humidity and temperature) for biofilm formation and consequent discolouration These results have important implications for testing of paint formulations (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

Instrumented indentation has been used to investigate the mechanical properties of BETAMATE 1496 (R) Epoxy adhesive. The properties of the adhesive were analyzed by measuring its hardness and its Young`s modulus in samples extracted from six different positions of the front door of a commercial passenger vehicle in two phases of processing: after application of the adhesive in the door assembling (""pre-cured"" state) and after final cure in the painting oven (""cured"" state). Special attention was given to setting the optimal parameters (""creep"" time and unloading time step) for the instrumented indentation testing for the present application. Young`s modulus values around 1.1 +/- 0.2 GPa and hardness values around 0.15 +/- 0.05 GPa were obtained for all samples, irrespective of the variation of the indentation parameters in the testing procedure and of the relative position of the adhesive in the door frame in both states.
