The Andorra family of languages (which includes the Andorra Kernel Language -AKL) is aimed, in principie, at simultaneously supporting the programming styles of Prolog and committed choice languages. On the other hand, AKL requires a somewhat detailed specification of control by the user. This could be avoided by programming in Prolog to run on AKL. However, Prolog programs cannot be executed directly on AKL. This is due to a number of factors, from more or less trivial syntactic differences to more involved issues such as the treatment of cut and making the exploitation of certain types of parallelism possible. This paper provides basic guidelines for constructing an automatic compiler of Prolog programs into AKL, which can bridge those differences. In addition to supporting Prolog, our style of translation achieves independent and-parallel execution where possible, which is relevant since this type of parallel execution preserves, through the translation, the user-perceived "complexity" of the original Prolog program.

The Andorra Kernel language scheme was aimed, in principle, at simultaneously supporting the programming styles of Prolog and committed choice languages. Within the constraint programming paradigm, this family of languages could also in principle support the concurrent constraint paradigm. This happens for the Agents Kernel Language (AKL). On the other hand, AKL requires a somewhat detailed specification of control by the user. This could be avoided by programming in CLP to run on AKL. However, CLP programs cannot be executed directly on AKL. This is due to a number of factors, from more or less trivial syntactic differences to more involved issues such as the treatment of cut and making the exploitation of certain types of parallelism possible. This paper provides a translation scheme which is a basis of an automatic compiler of CLP programs into AKL, which can bridge those differences. In addition to supporting CLP, our style of translation achieves independent and-parallel execution where possible, which is relevant since this type of parallel execution preserves, through the translation, the user-perceived "complexity" of the original program.

Development-engineers use in their work languages intended for software or hardware systems design, and test engineers utilize languages effective in verification, analysis of the systems properties and testing. Automatic interfaces between languages of these kinds are necessary in order to avoid ambiguous understanding of specification of models of the systems and inconsistencies in the initial requirements for the systems development. Algorithm of automatic translation of MSC (Message Sequence Chart) diagrams compliant with MSC’2000 standard into Petri Nets is suggested in this paper. Each input MSC diagram is translated into Petri Net (PN), obtained PNs are sequentially composed in order to synthesize a whole system in one final combined PN. The principle of such composition is defined through the basic element of MSC language — conditions. While translating reference table is developed for maintenance of consistent coordination between the input system’s descriptions in MSC language and in PN format. This table is necessary to present the results of analysis and verification on PN in suitable for the development-engineer format of MSC diagrams. The proof of algorithm correctness is based on the use of process algebra ACP. The most significant feature of the given algorithm is the way of handling of conditions. The direction for future work is the development of integral, partially or completely automated technological process, which will allow designing system, testing and verifying its various properties in the one frame.

Removing inconsistencies in a project is a less expensive activity when done in the early steps of design. The use of formal methods improves the understanding of systems. They have various techniques such as formal specification and verification to identify these problems in the initial stages of a project. However, the transformation from a formal specification into a programming language is a non-trivial task and error prone, specially when done manually. The aid of tools at this stage can bring great benefits to the final product to be developed. This paper proposes the extension of a tool whose focus is the automatic translation of specifications written in CSPM into Handel-C. CSP is a formal description language suitable for concurrent systems, and CSPM is the notation used in tools support. Handel-C is a programming language whose result can be compiled directly into FPGA s. Our extension increases the number of CSPM operators accepted by the tool, allowing the user to define local processes, to rename channels in a process and to use Boolean guards on external choices. In addition, we also propose the implementation of a communication protocol that eliminates some restrictions on parallel composition of processes in the translation into Handel-C, allowing communication in a same channel between multiple processes to be mapped in a consistent manner and that improper communication in a channel does not ocurr in the generated code, ie, communications that are not allowed in the system specification

While sound and video may capture viewers' attention, interaction can captivate them. This has not been available prior to the advent of Digital Television. In fact, what lies at the heart of the Digital Television revolution is this new type of interactive content, offered in the form of interactive Television (iTV) services. On top of that, the new world of converged networks has created a demand for a new type of converged services on a range of mobile terminals (Tablet PCs, PDAs and mobile phones). This paper aims at presenting a new approach to service creation that allows for the semi-automatic translation of simulations and rapid prototypes created in the accessible desktop multimedia authoring package Macromedia Director into services ready for broadcast. This is achieved by a series of tools that de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces (UI) and applications for mobile terminals. The benefits of rapid prototyping are essential for the production of these new types of services, and are therefore discussed in the first section of this paper. In the following sections, an overview of the operation of content, service, creation and management sub-systems is presented, which illustrates why these tools compose an important and integral part of a system responsible of creating, delivering and managing converged broadcast and telecommunications services. The next section examines a number of metadata languages candidates for describing the iTV services user interface and the schema language adopted in this project. A detailed description of the operation of the two tools is provided to offer an insight of how they can be used to de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces and applications for mobile terminals. Finally, representative broadcast oriented and telecommunication oriented converged service components are also introduced, demonstrating how these tools have been used to generate different types of services.

---ABSTRACT---Over the last years, the unstoppable growth of biomedical data sources, mainly thanks to the development of massive data generation techniques (specially in the genomics field) and the rise of the communication and information sharing technologies, lead to the fact that biomedical research has come to rely almost exclusively on the analysis of distributed information and in finding relationships between different data sources. This is a complex task due to the heterogeneity of the sources used (either by the use of different formats, technologies or domain modeling). There are some research proyects that aim homogenization of these sources in order to retrieve information in an integrated way, as if it were a single database. However there is still now work to automate completely this process of semantic integration. There are two main approaches with the purpouse of integrating heterogeneous data sources: Centralized and Distributed. Both approches involve making translation from one model to another. To perform this task there is a need of using formalization of the semantic relationships between the underlying models and the main model. These formalizations are also calles annotations. In the context of semantic integration of the information, data base annotations consist on defining relations between concepts or words with the same meaning, so the automatic translation can be performed. Depending on the task, the ralationships can be between individuals or between whole sets of concepts (views). This paper focuses on the latter. The European project p-medicine (FP7-ICT-2009-270089) is based on the centralized approach. It uses view based annotations and RDF modeled databases. The data retireved from different data sources is translated and joined into a Data Warehouse. Within the p-medicine platform, the Biomedical Informatics Group (GIB) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, in which I worked, provides a software to create annotations for the RDF sources. This tool, called Ontology Annotator, is used to create annotations manually. However, although Ontology Annotator displays the data sources graphically, most of the users find it difficult to use this software, thus they spend too much time to complete the task. For this reason there is a need to develop a more advanced tool, which would be able to help the user in the task of annotating p-medicine databases. The aim is automating the most complex processes of the annotation and display the information clearly and easy understanding. This software is called Ontology Annotater Assistant and this book describes the process of design and development of it. as well as some innovative algorithms that were designed by the author of the work. This tool provides features that no other software in the field of automatic annotation can provide.

ABSTRACT The main contribution of this thesis has been the proposal and evaluation of an automatic translation system for improving the communication between hearing and deaf people. This system is made up of two systems: a Spanish into Spanish Sign Language (LSE – Lengua de Signos Española) translator and a Spanish generator from LSE sign sequences. The first one consists of a speech recognizer, a language translation module and an avatar that represents the sign sequence. The second one is made up an interface for specifying the sign sequence, a language translation module and a text-to-speech conversor. For the translation system development, firstly, a parallel corpus has been generated with 7,696 Spanish sentences and their LSE translations. These sentences are related to four different application domains: the renewal of the Identity Document, the renewal of the driver license, a bus information service and a hotel reception. Moreover, a sign database has been generated with more than 1,000 signs described in four different signwriting systems. Secondly, it has been developed an automatic translation module that integrates two translation techniques in a hierarchical structure: the first one is a memory-based technique and the second one is statistical. Furthermore, a pre processing module for the Spanish sentences has been implemented. By incorporating this pre processing module into the statistical translation module, the accuracy of the translation module improves significantly. In this thesis, the LSE into speech translation interface has been improved. On the one hand, new characteristics that improve its usability have been incorporated and, on the other hand, a SMS language into Spanish translator has been integrated, that lets specifying in SMS language the sequence to translate, besides by specifying a sign sequence. The proposed translation system has been evaluated in two application domains: a bus information service of the Empresa Municipal de Transportes of Madrid and the Hotel Intur Palacio San Martín reception. This evaluation has involved both deaf people and services employees. Objective measurements (given automatically by the system) and subjective measurements (given by user questionnaires) were extracted during the evaluation. Results have been very positive, thanks to the user opinions during the evaluation that validated the system performance and gave important information for future work. Finally, after the integration of each module of the two translation systems (speech- LSE and LSE-speech), obtaining the evaluation results and considering the experience throughout the process, a methodology for developing speech into sign language (and vice versa) into a new domain has been proposed in this thesis. This methodology includes the steps to follow for developing the translation system in a new application domain. Moreover, this methodology proposes the way to improve the flexibility of each system module, so that the adaptation of the system to a new application domain can be easier. On the other hand, some techniques are analyzed for selecting the out-of-domain parallel corpus sentences in order to train the translation module in a new domain; as well as techniques for selecting which in-domain sentences are more interesting for translating them (by LSE experts) in order to train the translation model.

This paper presents the automatic extension to other languages of TERSEO, a knowledge-based system for the recognition and normalization of temporal expressions originally developed for Spanish. TERSEO was first extended to English through the automatic translation of the temporal expressions. Then, an improved porting process was applied to Italian, where the automatic translation of the temporal expressions from English and from Spanish was combined with the extraction of new expressions from an Italian annotated corpus. Experimental results demonstrate how, while still adhering to the rule-based paradigm, the development of automatic rule translation procedures allowed us to minimize the effort required for porting to new languages. Relying on such procedures, and without any manual effort or previous knowledge of the target language, TERSEO recognizes and normalizes temporal expressions in Italian with good results (72% precision and 83% recall for recognition).

In the last few years, there has been a wide development in the research on textual information systems. The goal is to improve these systems in order to allow an easy localization, treatment and access to the information stored in digital format (Digital Databases, Documental Databases, and so on). There are lots of applications focused on information access (for example, Web-search systems like Google or Altavista). However, these applications have problems when they must access to cross-language information, or when they need to show information in a language different from the one of the query. This paper explores the use of syntactic-sematic patterns as a method to access to multilingual information, and revise, in the case of Information Retrieval, where it is possible and useful to employ patterns when it comes to the multilingual and interactive aspects. On the one hand, the multilingual aspects that are going to be studied are the ones related to the access to documents in different languages from the one of the query, as well as the automatic translation of the document, i.e. a machine translation system based on patterns. On the other hand, this paper is going to go deep into the interactive aspects related to the reformulation of a query based on the syntactic-semantic pattern of the request.

The best results in the application of computer science systems to automatic translation are obtained in word processing when texts pertain to specific thematic areas, with structures well defined and a concise and limited lexicon. In this article we present a plan of systematic work for the analysis and generation of language applied to the field of pharmaceutical leaflet, a type of document characterized by format rigidity and precision in the use of lexicon. We propose a solution based in the use of one interlingua as language pivot between source and target languages; we are considering Spanish and Arab languages in this case of application.

[EU]Testu bat koherente egiten duten arrazoiak ulertzea oso baliagarria da testuaren beraren ulermenerako, koherentzia eta koherentzia-erlazioak testu bat edo gehiago koherente diren ondorioztatzen laguntzen baitigu. Lan honetan gai bera duten testu ezberdinen arteko koherentziazko 3 Cross Document Structure Theory edo CST (Radev, 2000) erlazio aztertu eta sailkatu dira. Hori egin ahal izateko, euskaraz idatziriko gai berari buruzko testuak segmentatzeko eta beraien arteko erlazioak etiketatzeko gidalerroak proposatzen dira. Etiketatzaileen arteko adostasunaren berri ematen dugu. Koherentzia-erlazioak garatzea oso garrantzitsua da Hizkuntzaren Prozesamenduko hainbat sistementzat, hala nola, informazioa erauzteko sistementzat, itzulpen automatikoarentzat, galde-erantzun sistementzat eta laburpen automatikoarentzat. Etorkizunean CSTko erlazio guztiak corpus esanguratsuan aztertuko balira, testuen arteko koherentzia- erlazioak euskarazko testuen prozesaketa automatikoa bideratzeko lehenengo pausua litzateke hemen egindakoa.
