It's the fact that it's Austen mentioned here that provokes a response. The broad cultural veneration of Jane Austen means that even those who have never read her work are likely to have a strong reaction to Emerson's famou quotation. It is worth considering Emerson's accustion befor teaching an Austen novel, as many of his assertions will be amde - albeit in different terms - byt twenty-first-century students.

A television series is tagged with the label "cult" by the media, advertisers, and network executives when it is considered edgy or offbeat, when it appeals to nostalgia, or when it is considered emblematic of a particular subculture. By these criteria, almost any series could be described as cult. Yet certain programs exert an uncanny power over their fans, encouraging them to immerse themselves within a fictional world.In Cult Television leading scholars examine such shows as The X-Files; The Avengers; Doctor Who, Babylon Five; Star Trek; Xena, Warrior Princess; and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to determine the defining characteristics of cult television and map the contours of this phenomenon within the larger scope of popular culture.Contributors: Karen Backstein; David A. Amongst the most prominent uses of Twitter at present is its role in the discussion of widely televised events: Twitter’s own statistics for 2011, for example, list major entertainment spectacles (the MTV Music Awards, the BET Awards) and sports matches (the UEFA Champions League final, the FIFA Women’s World Cup final) amongst the events generating the most tweets per second during the year (Twitter, 2011). User activities during such televised events constitute a specific, unique category of Twitter use, which differs clearly from the other major events which generate a high rate of tweets per second (such as crises and breaking news, from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami to the death of Steve Jobs), as preliminary research has shown. During such major media events, by contrast, Twitter is used most predominantly as a technology of fandom instead: it serves in the first place as a backchannel to television and other streaming audiovisual media, enabling users offer their own running commentary on the universally shared media text of the event broadcast as it unfolds live. Centrally, this communion of fans around the shared text is facilitated by the use of Twitter hashtags – unifying textual markers which are now often promoted to prospective audiences by the broadcasters well in advance of the live event itself. This paper examines the use of Twitter as a technology for the expression of shared fandom in the context of a major, internationally televised annual media event: the Eurovision Song Contest. It constitutes a highly publicised, highly choreographed media spectacle whose eventual outcomes are unknown ahead of time and attracts a diverse international audience. Our analysis draws on comprehensive datasets for the ‘official’ event hashtags, #eurovision, #esc, and #sbseurovision. Using innovative methods which combine qualitative and quantitative approaches to the analysis of Twitter datasets containing several hundreds of thousands, we examine overall patterns of participation to discover how audiences express their fandom throughout the event. Minute-by-minute tracking of Twitter activity during the live broadcasts enables us to identify the most resonant moments during each event; we also examine the networks of interaction between participants to detect thematically or geographically determined clusters of interaction, and to identify the most visible and influential participants in each network. Such analysis is able to provide a unique insight into the use of Twitter as a technology for fandom and for what in cultural studies research is called ‘audiencing’: the public performance of belonging to the distributed audience for a shared media event. Our work thus contributes to the examination of fandom practices led by Henry Jenkins (2006) and other scholars, and points to Twitter as an important new medium facilitating the connection and communion of such fans.

This paper approaches a particular type of fandom practice, what I am calling fan activism. Fan activism is a topic that has historically received little attention in the fandom studies area. Here, I analyse the #ForaRicardoTeixeira campaign from a sample of 15,000 tweets posted at the time of his re¬signation from CBF. This paper combines quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate a) the com¬munity dynamics and b) the content of the conversations. The dynamics analysis pointed out, for instance, patterns of users and information sources, and the content analysis revealed how users framed the case. Future implications of the results for the study of online sport fandom practices are discussed at last.

This practice-led research project aims to use contemporary art processes and concepts of fandom to construct a space for the critical and creative exploration of the relationship between them. Much of the discourse addressing the intersection of these spaces over the last three decades tends to treat art and fan studies as separate areas of critical and theoretical research. There has also been very little consideration of the critical interface that art practice and fandom share in their engagement with one another – or how the artist as fan might creatively exploit this relationship. Approaching these issues through a practice-led methodology that combines studio based explorations and traditional modes of research, the project aims to demonstrate how my 'fannish' engagements with popular culture can generate new responses to, and understandings of, the relationship between fandom, affect and visual art. The research acts as a performative and creative investigation of fandom as I document the complicit tendencies that arise out of my affective relationship with pop cultural artefacts. It does this through appropriating and reconfiguring content from film, television and print media, to create digital video installations aimed at engendering new experiences and critical interpretations of screen culture. This approach promotes new possibilities for creative engagements with art and popular culture, and these are framed through the lens of what I term the digital-bricoleur. The research will be primarily contextualised by examining other artists' practices as well as selected theoretical frameworks that traverse my investigative terrain. The key artists that are discussed include Douglas Gordon, Candice Brietz, Pierre Huyghe, Paul Pfieffer, and Jennifer and Kevin McCoy. The theoretical developments of the project are drawn from a pluralistic range of ideas ranging from Johanna Drucker's discussion of critical complicity in contemporary art, Matt Hills' discussion of subjectivity in fandom and academia, Nicolas Bourriaud's discussion of Postproduction art practices, and Jacques Rancière's ideas about aesthetics and politics. The methodology and artworks developed over the course of this project will also demonstrate how digital-bricolage leads to new understandings of the relationships between contemporary art and entertainment. The research aims to exploit these apparently contradictory positions to generate a productive site for rethinking the relationship between the creative and critical possibilities of art and fandom. The outcomes of the research consists of a body of artworks – 75% – that demonstrate new contributions to knowledge, and an exegetical component – 25% – that acts to reflect on, analyse and critically contextualise the practice-led findings.

Twitter and other social media have become increasingly important tools for maintaining the relationships between fans and their idols across a range of activities, from politics and the arts to celebrity and sports culture. Twitter, Inc. itself has initiated several strategic approaches, especially to entertainment and sporting organisations; late in 2012, for example, a Twitter, Inc. delegation toured Australia in order to develop formal relationships with a number of key sporting bodies covering popular sports such as Australian Rules Football, A-League football (soccer), and V8 touring car racing, as well as to strengthen its connections with key Australian broadcasters and news organisations (Jackson & Christensen, 2012). Similarly, there has been a concerted effort between Twitter Germany and the German Bundesliga clubs and football association to coordinate the presence of German football on Twitter ahead of the 2012–2013 season: the Twitter accounts of almost all first-division teams now bear the official Twitter verification mark, and a system of ‘official’ hashtags for tweeting about individual games (combining the abbreviations of the two teams, e.g. #H96FCB) has also been instituted (Twitter auf Deutsch, 2012).

The road from Bali’s international airport to the island’s most renowned tourist area, Kuta Beach, leads past a number of establishments claiming affiliation to reggae music and Rastafarianism in large, appropriately coloured billboards. A sign outside a tee shirt shop bears the words RASTA MANIA within a green, yellow and red border, and a stick figure caricaturing negritude, the logo of this clothing label. In the window display hangs a tee shirt, and upon it Bob Marley’s wizened face. His lips pinch a cone-shaped spliff, and he squints behind a veil of airbrushed smoke. A leanto sign on the sidewalk outside Apache Bar announce REGGAE BANDS NIGHTLY. This barn of coconut wood and thatch nestles behind Wendy’s Ice Cream Parlour and Chi Chi’s Mexican Bar. Its timber walls emulate a rustic, spaghetti Western aesthetic and are adorned with portraits of native Americans. In addition to the reggae bands, nightly, Apache bar unites young Japanese women with local ‘guides’.2

A presente dissertação tem como objetivo analisar de que forma a educação oferecida a mulheres do final do século XVIII e início do século XIX pode ter contribuído para a composição de personagens femininas nos romances Razão e sensibilidade (1811) e Orgulho e preconceito (1813), da escritora britânica Jane Austen (1775 1817). O presente trabalho apresenta o pensamento de importantes nomes da literatura, da crítica e teoria literárias, como também da história, como suporte no mapeamento não apenas do que era discutido a respeito do momento e do lugar em que Jane Austen e os romances aqui em tela se inserem, mas principalmente acerca da educação feminina

O objetivo da presente dissertação é conhecer e compreender como se dá a manifestação do culto dos fãs a um produto de entretenimento contemporâneo, assim como as motivações e desdobramentos de tal prática. O trabalho é um estudo de caso realizado a partir de uma comunidade virtual, mais precisamente, um fórum de discussão sobre a série audiovisual americana Game of Thrones, produzida e exibida pela emissora HBO. A pesquisa apresenta e discute diferentes conceitos sobre fãs, culto, comunidade virtual, cultura fandom, cultura material, gênero fantasia, experiência estética, complexidade e estratégia narrativa, se guiando pela perspectiva metodológica da materialidade da comunicação. A partir de uma questão levantada pelos próprios fãs, este trabalho busca ainda confirmar ou refutar a hipótese de que o rompimento com o clássico modelo narrativo, conhecido como Jornada do Herói, amplamente utilizado por Hollywood nas décadas de 80 e 90, poderia contribuir para a manutenção e/ou recrudescimento do culto em torno da obra audiovisual analisada. Com este propósito, também são demonstrados os dados sobre as observações realizadas em campo e o que estes representam. Por fim, são trazidos à tona novos fenômenos, experiências e intuições como possibilidades de aprofundamento em estudos futuros

Considerando-se o papel representado pela literatura diante da formação de novas subjetividades, esta pesquisa investigou os discursos acerca do feminino presentes em três romances de autoria feminina do século XIX Razão e sensibilidade, Orgulho e Preconceito e Mansfield Park da romancista Jane Austen, uma das escritoras mais aclamadas da Inglaterra. Utilizando-se os personagens femininos desses romances e como eles se posicionam diante das relações afetivas e sociais, buscou-se estabelecer um paralelo entre a literatura e a história das mulheres. Sendo considerada uma das responsáveis pela consolidação do gênero romanesco inglês, Jane Austen insere em seus romances a questão da feminilidade como histórica e socialmente construída, além de ser ela própria também um exemplo da desconstrução dos papéis femininos, já que escreveu num tempo no qual a vida literária não era um espaço que as mulheres deveriam ocupar. No entanto, muitas vezes, tanto a discussão sobre as representações das mulheres nas suas obras, como a própria representatividade da autora para o campo de atuação das mulheres inglesas são negligenciados devido a uma leitura superficial de seus romances. Assim, este trabalho buscou dialogar com a história das mulheres, enriquecendo este campo de estudo, trazendo novos dados e formas de pensar as relações das mulheres na sociedade, através da literatura, além de objetivar dar mais destaque à romancista dentro deste campo de estudo. Não foi intenção fazer uma análise literária das obras, mas uma análise dos discursos existentes por trás dos papéis femininos nos romances escritos por Jane Austen, enquanto possível espelho da visão social da feminilidade, levando-se em consideração o contexto sócio histórico em que foram escritas
