The aims of the present study were to propose a PCR-RFLP genotyping method for the AJ_315378:c.110A>G and AB_264325:c. 771G>C SNPs in the equine CRISP1 and HTR1A genes, respectively, as well as to characterize these and another polymorphism, AB_098561:c.1470G>A of the SLC6A4 gene, in order to provide a basis for future studies investigating the association between DNA markers and traits of interest in this breed. For this, 151 Mangalarga horses of both sexes, representatives of the population of the Sate of São Paulo, Brazil, were used. PCR-RFLP was found to be adequate for the genotyping of the SNPs AJ_315378: c.110A>G of the CRISP1 and AB_264325:c.771G>C of the HTR1A. However, the polymorphism of the CRISP1 probably does not occur in Mangalarga horses, a fact impairing association studies of this marker with traits related to male fertility. The estimative of the population genetic parameters obtained for the polymorphisms AB_264325:c.771G>C of the HTR1A and AB_098561:c.1470G> A of the SLC6A4 in the studied sample discourage the conduct of research addressed the association between markers and traits related to temperament.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar os parâmetros genéticos e a tendência genética de características de crescimento e perímetro escrotal em animais da raça Brangus. Dados de 6.340 animais, criados em cinco propriedades nas regiões Sul, Sudeste e Centro‑Oeste do Brasil, foram utilizados para avaliação de: perímetro escrotal (PE) ao sobreano e pesos ao nascer (PN), à desmama (P205), ao ano (P365) e ao sobreano (P550). Os componentes de covariância foram estimados por inferência bayesiana, sob modelo animal, com efeitos fixos de grupos de contemporâneos e de classe de idade da vaca ao parto, e efeitos aleatórios genético aditivo direto e residual. Os efeitos aleatórios genético materno e de ambiente permanente materno foram incluídos somente para PN e P205. O efeito linear da covariável idade do animal na mensuração foi considerado para todas as características analisadas, exceto PN. As médias observadas foram 33,6, 184,6, 235,9, 344,9 e 33,8 cm para PN, P205, P365, P550 e PE, respectivamente, e as tendências genéticas foram de ‑0,001, 0,107, 0,177, 0,217 kg por ano e 0,001 cm por ano. As estimativas das herdabilidades direta e materna variaram de 0,16 (PN) a 0,61 (PE) e de 0,08 (PN) a 0,09 (P205), indicativas de que as características avaliadas são passíveis de seleção para o melhoramento genético da raça Brangus.

The objective of this work was to estimate, by meta-analysis, the heritability (h(2)) and the genetic (r(g)) and phenotypic (r(f)) correlations of residual feed intake (RFI), and of its component traits in beef cattle from 19 breeds or genetic groups. Twenty-two scientific papers published from 1963 to 2011, from eight countries, totaling 52,637 cattle of ages from 28 days up to slaughter, were evaluated. The estimates of RFI, dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG) and metabolic weight (BW0.75) were weighted by the inverse of sample variance. The variation between studies of h(2) for each trait was analyzed by weighted least squares. The effects of sex, country and breed were significant for h(2) of RFI, explaining 67% of variation between studies. For DMI, country and breed effects were significant and explained 96% of variation. Pooled estimates of h(2) were: 0.255+/-0.008, 0.278+/-0.012, 0.321+/-0.015, and 0.397+/-0.032 for RFI, DMI, ADG and BW0.75, respectively. Pooled estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations were low between RFI and ADG and between RFI and BW0.75 (from -0.021+/-0.034 to 0.025+/-0.035), and moderate between RFI and DMI (0.636+/-0.035 and 0.698+/-0.041) and between DMI, ADG and BW0.75 (0.441+/-0.062 to 0.688+/-0.032). The trait RFI has lower heritability estimates than its components.

To investigate morphological and genomic differences between cutting and racing lines of Quarter Horses, 120 racing and 68 cutting animals of both sexes, registered at the Brazilian Association of Quarter Horse Breeders, were used. Blood samples were collected, and the following physical traits were measured: weight; height at withers; body length; length of the shank, pastern, rump, head, and neck; and chest, shank, and hoof circumference. For analysis of genomic differences, 54,602 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped using the Equine SNP50 BeadChip, and the quality of individual and SNP genotype data were evaluated. The fixation index, FST, was used to identify genome regions that were altered in the lines by selection. The results showed significant differences between the lines in all physical traits. Quality control led to the exclusion of four cutting animals with a call rate of <0.95. After filtering, 12,544, 13,815, and 13,370 SNPs were excluded for the whole population (n = 184), the 120 racing animals, and the 64 cutting animals, respectively. The number of informative polymorphisms detected in each line and in the whole population indicated that the Equine SNP50 BeadChip can be used in genetic studies of Quarter Horses. The fixation index, FST, identified 2,558 genome regions that may have been modified by divergent selection. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

The objective was to evaluate reproductive tract development (ovary and uterus) and onset of puberty in two lines of Nellore heifers (Bos indicus) selected for postweaning weight. A total of 123 heifers, including 46 from the control Nellore line (NeC) and 77 from the selection Nellore line (NeS) were used. Every 18 to 21 days from 12 to 24 months of age, average ovarian area (OVA), endometrial thickness (ETh), and diameter of the largest follicle in each ovary were evaluated (using transrectal ultrasonography), and body weight, hip height, and body condition score were measured. There were no differences between NeS and NeC heifers for ETh or OVA (P < 0.05). Genetic selection for higher postweaning weight had no negative influence on the onset of puberty, with 52% and 48% of NeC and NeS heifers, respectively, pubertal at 24 months of age (P = 0.49). Heifers that reached puberty at the end of the study were heavier (NeC, 296.9 vs. 276.7 kg; NeS, 343.5 vs. 327.9 kg; P < 0.01) and younger (NeC, 23.4 vs. 24.2 mo; NeS, 22.7 vs. 24.0 months; P < 0.01) than those that did not. Furthermore, heifers that were heavier at weaning reached puberty earlier. Pubertal heifers had a greater OVA (4.15 vs. 3.14 cm2; P < 0.01) and ETh (12.15 vs. 9.93 mm; P < 0.01) than nonpubertal heifers. Taken together, OVA and ETh had positive effects (P < 0.01) on the onset of puberty and were suitable indicator traits of heifer sexual precocity in pasture management systems. However, selection for weight did not alter ovarian or endometrial development, or manifestation of puberty at 24 months of age. Among the growth traits studied, weaning weight and weight at puberty had significant positive effects on manifestation of first estrus. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

With highlighted sprint ability, the racing line is important segment within the Quarter Horses breed, with huge impact on agribusiness. Theseanimals have noted morphological differences when compared to other lines within the breed, especially for larger body size proportions.The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters forbody measurements traitsof the racing line of the Quarter Horses breed via Bayesian inference. Here,289 animals of both sexes, registered at brazilian association of breeders (ABQM), were used. The results showed high coefficient of heritability for body length (0.74) and back-loin lenght(0.61). The heritability coefficients for height at withersand croup length were moderate (0.44 and 0.47, respectively). High genetic correlation for body length and croup length and for body length and back-loins lengthwas also observed(0.80 and 0.76, respectively). Taking into account the estimates of heritability and genetic correlations between body measurement traits, the body length and height at withers traits proved to be appropriate to provide future researches that investigate the genetic correlation between body measurements and racing performance.

Estudos demonstram que na agricultura familiar geralmente são determinados um conjunto de fatores específicos decorrentes das políticas públicas e desta prática, como preços agrícolas e o crédito rural, que refletem nas formas de uso da terra adotadas por estes agricultores. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os fatores de uso da terra como ferramentas para subsidiar análises sobre crédito e renda para a agricultura familiar. A pesquisa foi realizada na mesorregião do nordeste paraense. As variáveis consideradas foram X13 ? ?credito e SAFs? (C_SAFs), X7 ? ?renda? (R_ENDA), X14- ?roça SAFs? (R_SAFs). Conclui-se que o fator renda/crédito condiciona a mudança no uso da terra em propriedades em estádio inicial de transição agroecológica.

No Pólo Rio Capim do programa PROAMBIENTE foram desencadeadas várias etapas metodológicas junto aos agricultores familiares como a elaboração do Plano de Desenvolvimento do Pólo (PD), Padrões de Certificação Socioambiental (PCSA), Diagnóstico Individual (DI), Plano de Utilização da unidade familiar (PU) e a construção de Acordos Comunitários (AC). Os resultados apontaram que as ferramentas metodológicas contribuem de forma significativa para produção e conservação ambiental do Pólo. Contudo, não se deve pressupor que essa metodologia seja uma solução simples para transição agroecológica. Neste sentido, é importante considerar os fatores de decisão (de caráter interno e externo) com os quais os agricultores deparam-se ao introduzir mudanças no uso da terra que serão capazes de fornecer maiores níveis produtivos e prestação de serviços ambientais o que denota a necessidade urgente de articulação entre políticas públicas agrícolas e ambientais.

O contexto socioeconômico poderá mostrar um novo caminho a ser seguido por futuras políticas públicas as diferentes tipologias familiares. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar o uso da terra e as famílias através de modelagem por meio do SPSS utilizando os testes KMO e o Barlett Test of Sphericity. Os resultados apontam que o TUT_1 tem maior concentração nas atividades de extrativismo, correspondendo a 18,25%; TUT_2 trabalham quase que exclusivamente com culturas anuais apresentando 21,75%; o TUT_3 é considerado diversificados com 12,25%; o TUT_4 apresentam atividades voltadas à venda de sua mão-de-obra apresentando 12,5% e o TUT_5, desenvolvem atividades de criação de gado com 35,25%. As famílias estudadas têm as capoeiras como seu principal recurso natural, utilizando-as como fonte de nutriente para produção de alimentos básicos e renda. Conclui-se que a tipologia possui diferentes estratos socioeconômicos e de recursos naturais, onde se pode constatar a existência de uma importante diversidade de modos de vida e de produção na região.

We prove for such A the Herzog-Vasconcelos conjecture: If the A-module Der(k)A of k-linear derivations of A has finite projective dimension then it is free and hence A is a polynomial ring by the well known graded case of the Zariski-Lipman conjecture.

Resumen: Hacia el 167 a.C., un joven Polibio, se sorprendía de que Roma hubiera podido afi rmar su poderío en la península, resistir los ataques cartagineses y acabar imponiendo sus leyes en Oriente. Probablemente –explica P. Grimal– en ello también haya infl uido que las costumbres y tradiciones romanas contribuían a asegurar una superioridad sobre el resto de las culturas y hacían de Roma una ciudad única entre todas. La familia y la mujer constituyeron parte fundamental dentro de la consolidación de esa estructura socio política y de ello heredaríamos, especialmente a nivel normativo, una sólida tradición jurídico-romana. Sin embargo, la época imperial representó un grave período de crisis en el cual, tomar esposa, dar hijos a la patria y controlar los patrimonios, se convirtió en una importante reafi rmación moral, jurídica y política para la sociedad de su tiempo. En esta forma, se analizarán brevemente algunos conceptos y leyes relevantes –cuyos ecos volveremos a encontrar refl ejados a lo largo y ancho de la España cristiana medieval– los cuales nos ayudarán a adentrarnos en la cotidianidad de este singular período, sus emancipadas mujeres aristocráticas y el derecho privado.
