The ability of a gold palladium bimetallic catalyst to selectively oxidise toluene has been used to enhance the hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction of NOx, a reaction in which the interaction of partial oxidation intermediates is considered important. The combination of gold with palladium has a synergistic effect, producing a catalyst that is more active for NOx conversion than the arithmetic sum of the corresponding mono-metallic materials. Three regimes in the conversion profile of the AuPd catalyst are proposed relating to production and consumption of toluene derived species, such as benzaldehyde and benzonitrile. The possible role of these reaction intermediates in the toluene HC-SCR reaction is examined. Using 15NO, the formation of N2 and N2O is observed via the direct interaction between the nitrogen atom of benzonitrile and 15NO. The higher activity of the bimetallic catalyst for the NOx reduction reaction by toluene is discussed in the context of these partial oxidation intermediates.

The polymer-supported bimetallic catalyst PVP-PdCl2-MnCl2 (PVP=poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)) exhibits high activity and selectivity for the oxidative carbonylation of amines with carbon monoxide and oxygen to carbamate esters under atmospheric pressure in the presence of a base (NaOAc). This catalyst is prepared by the addition of MnCl2 to the alcoholic solution of PVP-PdCl2 in situ. A remarkable bimetallic synergic effect and the role of PVP in PVP-PdCl2-MXn (MXn=the second transition metal component such as NiCl2, CoCl2, MnCl2 and FeCl3) gives rise to an obvious increase in the conversion and selectivity for the reaction. Among the second metal components tested, Mn-Pd exerts the strongest synergic effect. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Hydrogenation of nitrobenzene can be catalyzed by the water-soluble catalyst PdCl2(TPPTS)(2) (TPPTS = tris(m-sulfonatophenyl)phosphine trisodium salt) under normal pressure at 65 degrees C in H2O/toluene biphasic solvent system. The exhibits higher catalytic activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation of aromatic nitrocompounds, compared with PdCl2(TPPTS)(2) or H2PtCl6 alone. The transmission electron micrographs demonstrate that the monometallic catalyst is composed of ultrafine palladium particles of almost uniform size while the particles of bimetallic catalyst are more widely distributed in size than those of the monometallic ones. The aqueous phase reforming (APR) of xylitol was studied in a continuous fixed bed reactor over three catalysts: Pt/Al2O3, Pt/TiO2 and Pt-Re/TiO2. The data obtained in the case of the monometallic Pt catalysts was compared to the bimetallic Pt-Re sample. The effect of Re addition on the catalyst stability, activity, product formation and selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was studied. The bimetallic catalyst demonstrated a higher selectivity to alkanes compared to the monometallic samples. The monometallic catalyst was more selective toward hydrogen formation. A plausible reaction scheme explaining differences in selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was proposed and discussed.

Pt and PtSn catalysts were studied for n-butanol electro-oxidation at various temperatures. PtSn showed a higher activity towards butanol electro-oxidation compared to Pt in acidic media. The onset potential for n-butanol oxidation on PtSn is ~520 mV lower than that found on Pt, and significantly lower activation energy was found for PtSn compared with that for Pt.

Novel silica supported gold and copper ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) have been synthesized, characterized and used as a separable dual catalyst in Sonogashira type reaction. These Au.CuFe2O4@Silica NPs show a high efficiency as catalyst in the alkynylation not only of aryl iodides but also aryl bromides. By using only 0.5 mol% loading and t-BuOK as base in N,N-dimethylacetamide as solvent, aryl iodides react at 115 ºC in 1 d, whereas for aryl bromides the cross-coupling takes place at 130 ºC in 2 d. The catalyst can be successfully recycled using an external magnet for four consecutive runs.

A bimetallic oxidation catalyst has been synthesized via wet impregnation of copper and iron over a mesoporous SBA-15 silica support. Physicochemical properties of the resulting material were characterized by XRD, N2 physisorption, DRUVS, FTIR, Raman, SEM and HRTEM, revealing the structural integrity of the parent SBA-15, and presence of highly dispersed Cu and Fe species present as CuO and Fe2O3. The CuFe/SBA-15 bimetallic catalyst was subsequently utilized for the oxidative degradation of N,N-diethyl-p-phenyl diamine (DPD) employing a H2O2 oxidant in aqueous solution.

Palladium, platinum bimetallic catalysts supported on η-Al2O3, ZSM-5(23) and ZSM-5(80), with and without the addition of TiO2, were prepared and used for low temperature total methane oxidation (TMO). The catalysts were tested under reaction temperatures of 200-500 °C with a GHSV of 100,000 mL g-1 h-1. It was found that all four components, palladium, platinum, an acidic support and oxygen carrier were needed to achieve a highly active and stable catalyst. The optimum support being 17.5% TiO2 on ZSM-5(80) where the T10% was observed at only 200 °C. On addition of platinum, longer time on stream experiments showed no decrease in the catalyst activity over 50 h at 250 °C.

The mono- and bimetallic catalytic polymeric hollow-fiber reactors were established with catalytic polymeric cellulose acetate (CA) hollow fibers prepared by supporting the polymer-anchored mono- or bimetallic catalyst in/on the inner wall of the hollow fibers. The selective hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene to cyclopentene was efficiently carried out in the above catalytic polymeric hollow-fiber reactors, especially in the NaBH4 reduced bimetallic PVP-Pd-0.5Co/CA hollow-fiber reactor under mild conditions of 40 degrees C and 0.1 MPa. It was found that there was a remarkable synergic effect of palladium and cobalt reduced by NaBH4 in the bimetallic PVP-Pd-0.5Co/CA hollow-fiber reactor, which results in a 97.5% conversion of cyclopentadiene and a 98.4% selectivity for cyclopentene. The polymer-supported bimetallic catalyst FVP-PdCl2-2CuCl(2) (PVP, poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), obtained in situ by the addition of CuCl2 to an alcoholic solution of PVP-PdCl2, exhibits high selectivity and activity for the oxidative carbonylation of aniline with carbon monoxide and oxygen to ethyl N-phenylcarbamate in the presence of a base (NaOAc) under atmospheric pressure. The strong synergic effect of Pd-Cu gives rise to a clear increase in the selectivity and activity. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
