We provide a compilation of downward fluxes (total mass, POC, PON, BSiO2, CaCO3, PIC and lithogenic/terrigenous fluxes) from over 6000 sediment trap measurements distributed in the Atlantic Ocean, from 30 degree North to 49 degree South, and covering the period 1982-2011. Data from the Mediterranean Sea are also included. Data were compiled from different sources: data repositories (BCO-DMO, PANGAEA), time series sites (BATS, CARIACO), published scientific papers and/or personal communications from PI's. All sources are specifed in the data set. Data from the World Ocean Atlas 2009 were extracted to provide each flux observation with contextual environmental data, such as temperature, salinity, oxygen (concentration, AOU and percentage saturation), nitrate, phosphate and silicate.

The sexual development of Atlantoraja platana from the south-west Atlantic Ocean was analysed. According to the reproductive variables considered for both sexes, males were found to mature at 620 mm and females at 715 mm total length. Several reefs of the world have undergone changes in community due to sedimentation processes. It has been suggested that Abrolhos reefs (Brazil/South-West Atlantic) are subjected to a steady coastal influence, although there is still little information regarding this assumption. In this work, we have analyzed a set of environmental parameters concerning sedimentation characteristics at the Abrolhos reefs, near 18 degrees S-39 degrees W. The analysis included remote sensing, model and in situ data to provide a three-dimensional quantitative description of the processes that influence sediment apportionment to the reefs. Mineralogy and natural radioactivity of sediment trapped at three reef sites in a transect perpendicular to the coastline were used in conjunction with numerical weather prediction model and remote sensing databases. We have observed an increase of around 100% of sediment flux during the summer compared to the winter season. A comparison of regional rainfall regime, sediment plume dynamics and a year-around monitoring of polar fronts trajectories and surface wind showed that the wind-driven resedimentation due to polar front activity is the major contributor to the intensification of sedimentation processes at the offshore area of Abrolhos reefs, despite river runoff from mainland. Here we report the first direct underwater observations of extensive human-caused impacts on two remote seamounts in the Corner Rise complex (north-western Atlantic). This note documents evidence of anthropogenic damage on the summits of Kukenthal peak (on Corner Seamount) and Yakutat Scamount, likely resulting from a limited Russian fishery from the mid- 1970s to the mid-1990s, highlighting how bottom trawling can have long-term detrimental effects oil deep-water benthic fauna.

The muricate planktonic foraminiferal genera Morozovella and Acarinina were abundant and diverse during the upper Palaeocene to middle Eocene and dominated the tropical and subtropical assemblages. A significant biotic turnover in planktonic foraminifera occurred in the latest middle Eocene with a notable reduction in the acarininid lineage and the extinction of the morozovellids. These genera are extensively employed as palaeoclimatic and biostratigraphic markers and, therefore, this turnover episode is an important event in the record of the Cenozoic planktonic foraminifera. Sediments from the western North Atlantic (Ocean Drilling Program Site 1052) were examined in order to investigate these extinction events, in terms of both timing and mechanisms. Biostratigraphic events of the middle and late Eocene have been examined with a sampling resoluti on of approximately 3 kyr. These have been calibrated to the magneto- and astrochronology to accurately define the timing of key biostratigraphic events, particularly the extinction of Morozovella spinulosa which is a distinct biomarker for late middle Eocene sediments. High-resolution biostratigraphy reveals that the extinctions in the muricate group occurred in a stepwise form. The large acarininids (Acarinina praetopilensis) terminate 10 kyr prior to the extinction of M. spinulosa and small acarininids (Acarinina medizzai and Acarinina echinata) continue into the upper Eocene. High-resolution stable isotope analyses have been conducted on planktonic and benthic foraminifera from the western North Atlantic to reconstruct sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and deep water temperatures and the structure of the water column around this major biotic turnover. Whilst the extinctions of M. spinulosa and A. praetopilensis occur during a long-term cooling trend, the biotic turnover in the muricate group does not appear to be related to significant climatic change. Sea surface temperatures decrease slowly prior to the extinction events, and there is no evidence for a large-temperature shift associated with the faunal changes. The turnover event was therefore probably related to the increased surface water productivity and the deterioration of photosymbiotic partnerships with algae.

Rock material sampled from the Mir manned deep-sea submersibles and by dradges, grabs, and sediment cores over a vast area of the North Atlantic was analyzed to show that this material is of continental origin, unlike original rocks of the ocean floor. It is proved to be related to iceberg rafting during Quaternary glaciations. Independent data on distribution and composition of sandy and silty grains in sediment cores also support this relation to the recent glaciation. New criteria for identification of iceberg rock matter in pelagic sediments are presented on the base of analysis of all available data.

The TEX86 paleotemperature proxy is based on archaeal glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) lipids preserved in marine sediments, yet both the influence of different physiological factors on the structural distribution of GDGTs, and the mechanism(s) by which GDGTs are exported to marine sediments remain unclear. In particular, TEX86 temperatures derived directly from suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the water column can diverge strongly from corresponding in situ temperatures. Here we investigated the abundance and structural distribution of GDGTs in the South-west and Equatorial Atlantic Ocean by examining SPM collected from four surface 1000 m depth profiles spanning 48 degrees of latitude. The depth distribution of GDGTs was consistent with our current understanding of marine archaeal ecology, and specifically of ammonia-oxidizing Thaumarchaeota. Maximum GDGT concentrations occurred at the base of the primary NO2- maximum. Core GDGTs dominated the structural distribution in surface waters, while intact polar GDGTs - thought to potentially indicate live cells - were more abundant at all depths below the maximum NO2- concentration. When integrated through the upper 1000 m of the water column, > 98% of GDGTs were present in waters at and below the depth of the primary NO2- maximum. TEX86-calculated temperatures showed local minima at the depth of the NO2- maximum, while the ratio of GDGT 2:GDGT 3 [2/3] increased with depth throughout the upper water column. These results were used to model the depth of origin for GDGTs exported to sediments. By comparing our SPM data to published TEX86 values and [2/3] ratios from sediments near our study sites, we conclude that most GDGTs are exported from the depth of maximum GDGT concentrations, near the subsurface NO2- maximum (~80-250 m). This indicates that local ammonia oxidation dynamics are important regional controls on the GDGT ratios preserved in sediments. Predicting the extent to which subsurface variations in archaeal activity may influence the sedimentary TEX86 record will require a better understanding of how site-specific productivity and particle dynamics in the upper water column influence the depth of origin for exported organic matter.
