Computer assisted learning has an important role in the teaching of pharmacokinetics to health sciences students because it transfers the emphasis from the purely mathematical domain to an 'experiential' domain in which graphical and symbolic representations of actions and their consequences form the major focus for learning. Basic pharmacokinetic concepts can be taught by experimenting with the interplay between dose and dosage interval with drug absorption (e.g. absorption rate, bioavailability), drug distribution (e.g. volume of distribution, protein binding) and drug elimination (e.g. clearance) on drug concentrations using library ('canned') pharmacokinetic models. Such 'what if' approaches are found in calculator-simulators such as PharmaCalc, Practical Pharmacokinetics and PK Solutions. Others such as SAAM II, ModelMaker, and Stella represent the 'systems dynamics' genre, which requires the user to conceptualise a problem and formulate the model on-screen using symbols, icons, and directional arrows. The choice of software should be determined by the aims of the subject/course, the experience and background of the students in pharmacokinetics, and institutional factors including price and networking capabilities of the package(s). Enhanced learning may result if the computer teaching of pharmacokinetics is supported by tutorials, especially where the techniques are applied to solving problems in which the link with healthcare practices is clearly established.

A presente dissertação teve como objetivo fazer uma análise da viabilidade técnica da utilização dos condutores de alta temperatura nas linhas aéreas de MT, identificar vantagens, analisar inconvenientes, e estabelecer um comparativo a custos médios com as soluções convencionais. Foi efetuado o estudo de um caso real da EDP Distribuição que consistia na necessidade do aumento da capacidade de transporte de energia da linha aérea a 15 kV Espinho-Sanguedo. Neste foi ponderada a solução onde se poderia efetuar passagem de linha simples para linha dupla em alumínio-aço (AA) 160 mm2 ou a solução alternativa e inovadora de substituição dos condutores existentes por condutores de alta temperatura ACCC 182 mm2. Para isso foram efetuados cálculos e também criada uma ferramenta de apoio à decisão, para validação dos mesmos, com o intuito de mais tarde poder ser aplicada nas linhas aéreas em Média Tensão em todo o país e, sempre que necessário, se possa fazer um estudo de ponderação técnica de forma sistemática e estruturada. Neste trabalho estão identificadas as vantagens, foram relatados os inconvenientes, e estabeleceu-se um comparativo a custos médios da utilização de condutores de alta temperatura com as soluções convencionais. Antes de poder ser realizado um estudo do caso concreto da Linha aérea Espinho-Sanguedo foi necessário um aprofundamento do estado da arte no que diz respeito à comparação entre o cabo de alta temperatura ACCC e o cabo convencional ACSR, sendo este o mais utilizado nas linhas aéreas em MT. Os cabos de alta temperatura trouxeram inovações neste tema de transporte de energia, e como tal surgiu a necessidade de um estudo mais aprofundado da sua constituição, destacando o seu núcleo formado pelo compósito de fibra de carbono e fibra de vidro. Foi também analisado vantagens e desvantagens do cabo de alta temperatura e até mesmo situações onde a sua aplicação poderá ser vantajosa, de modo a tirar proveito das suas caraterísticas em que se destacam altas temperaturas de funcionamento e flechas reduzidas. Para elaborar um projeto de uma linha aérea em média tensão é necessário considerar a legislação em vigor, os aspetos ambientais e económicos, respeitando e garantindo as premissas do cálculo elétrico e mecânico. Economicamente este tipo de cabo (ACCC) é mais dispendioso do que os convencionais, no entanto o estudo realizado permitiu perceber que a sua implementação técnica é vantajosa em linhas aéreas de elevada capacidade de transporte de energia, sobretudo nos casos onde serão necessárias instalar linhas duplas ou linhas simples de seções elevadas. Devido às suas caraterísticas mecânicas, estes cabos permitem melhorar as linhas na sua dimensão, podendo diminuir o número de apoios a instalar, podendo diminuir a robustez dos apoios e permitir maior facilidade na montagem. Estas vantagens traduzem-se em menores impactos ambientais e permitem sobretudo reduzir os constrangimentos com os proprietários dos terrenos onde os apoios são implantados.

This article aimed to describe the subsistence fisheries of traditional populations of three ethnic groups, one Ashaninka and two Kaxinawá, lying on the banks of the River Breu. Initially, monitors were trained to fill logbooks with data from fisheries of the villages during an annual cycle (august/1995 august/1996). Based on these data, it was realized an inventory of the most common fish species caught as well as one about the fishing environment. The following results were obtained: i) Indians prefer to use pools, locally known as "poços", for fishing; ii) the most common caught species are the "mandis" (35%, Pimelodidae), armored catfishes (Loricariidae), specially Hypostomus sp. (25%), the "curimatá" (9%, Prochilodus sp.) and the "saburus" (8%, Curimatidae), among others; iii) the fishing gears that lead to a high rate of fishing are the native "tingui", nets and bow and arrows; iv) fisheries are more intensive during summer; v) the fishing effort and their associated factors statistically significant in predicting the catches in the Indian Reserve were f1 = number of fishermen, f2 = (number of fishermen*total time devoted to fishing), f3 = [(number of fishermen)*(total time devoted to fishing)-(the time displacement)] and the factor villages and fishing gears; vi) although almost all the fisheries are done by walking to the fishing places, catches increase when paddle boats are used; and vii) the most active fishermen belong to Kaxinawá tribe.

This article presents a way to associate a Grothendieck site structure to a category endowed with a unique factorisation system of its arrows. In particular this recovers the Zariski and Etale topologies and others related to Voevodsky's cd-structures. As unique factorisation systems are also frequent outside algebraic geometry, the same construction applies to some new contexts, where it is related with known structures dened otherwise. The paper details algebraic geometrical situations and sketches only the other contexts.

Järvholm and Co-workers (2009) proposed a conceptual model for research on working life. Models are powerful communication and decision tools. This model is strongly unidirectional and does not cover the mentioned interactions in the arguments.With help of a genealogy of work and of health it is shown that work and health are interactive and have to be analysed on the background of society.Key words: research model, work, health, occupational health, society, interaction, discussion paperRemodellierung der von Järvholm et al. (2009) vorgeschlagenen Forschungsperspektiven in Arbeit und GesundheitJärvholm und Kollegen stellten 2009 ein konzeptionelles Modell für die Forschung im Bereich Arbeit und Gesundheit vor. Modelle stellen kraftvolle Kommunikations- und Entscheidungsinstrumente dar. Die Einflussfaktoren im Modell verlaufen jedoch nur in einer Richtung und bilden die interaktiven Argumente im Text nicht ab. Mit Hilfe einer Genealogie der Begriffe Arbeit und Gesundheit wird aufgezeigt, dass Arbeit und Gesundheit sich gegenseitig beeinflussen und nur vor dem Hintergrund der jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Kontextfaktoren zu analysieren sind.Introduction : After an interesting introduction about the objectives of research on working life, Järvholm and Co-workers (2009) manage to define a conceptual model for working life research out of a small survey of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) definitions. The strong point of their model is the entity 'working life' including personal development, as well as career paths and aging. Yet, the model Järvholm et al. (2009) propose is strangely unidirectional; the arrows point from the population to working life, from there to health and to disease, as well as to productivity and economic resources. The diagram only shows one feed-back loop: between economic resources and health. We all know that having a chronic disease condition influences work and working capacity. Economic resources have a strong influence on work, too. Having personal economic resources will influence the kind of work someone accepts and facilitate access to continuous professional education. A third observation is that society is not present in the model, although this is less the case in the arguments. In fact, there is an incomprehensible gap between the arguments brought forth by Järvholm and co-workers and their reductionist model.Switzerland has a very low coverage of occupational health specialists. Switzerland is a long way from fulfilling the WHO's recommendations on workers' access to OSH services as described in its Global plan of action. The Institute for Work and Health (IST) in Lausanne is the only organisation which covers the major domains of OSH research that are occupational medicine, occupational hygiene, ergonomic and psychosocial research. As the country's sole occupational health institution we are forced to reflect the objectives of working life research so as not to waste the scare resources available.I will set out below a much shortened genealogy of work and of health, with the aim of extending Järvholm et al's (2009) analyses on the perspectives of working life research in two directions. Firstly towards the interactive nature of work and health and the integration of society, and secondly towards the question of what working life means or where working life could be situated.Work, as we know it today - paid work regulated by a contract as the basis for sustaining life and as a base for social rights - was born in modern era. Therefore I will start my genealogy in the pre-modern era, focus on the important changes that occurred during industrial revolution and the modern era and end in 2010 taking into account the enormous transformations of the past 20-30 years. I will put aside some 810 years of advances in science and technology that have expanded the world's limits and human understanding, and restrict my genealogy to work and to health/body implicating also the societal realm. Power leakage properties and guiding conditions of rib antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides (rib-ARROW) have been theoretically and experimentally studied as a function of wavelength and polarization of the light for different geometrical and optical parameters that characterize the rib-ARROW structure. Obtained results show that rib-ARROWs can only be fabricated with low losses in a wavelength range when determined rib configurations are adopted. Furthermore, these waveguides exhibit a polarization sensitivity that largely depends on the core-substrate refractive index difference. Together with the experimental results, theoretical calculations from different modeling methods are also presented and discussed.

L'objectiu d'aquest article és discutir una antiga matriu comunicativa parcialment assenyalada per A. Comte, Ch. S. Peirce i U. Eco. Aquests autors reconegueren la relació entre marques, fletxes, ensenyes i espills com a diferents metàfores bàsiques de diverses operacions cognitives, encara que no en van presentar una visió de conjunt. Tots tres van treballar la distinció entre metàfora i metonímia, que va resultar tan fructífera en diferents dominis de recerca, com Jakobson (entre altres) ens va ensenyar. La meua hipòtesi és que aquestes quatre metàfores bàsiques (marques, fletxes, ensenyes i espills) es poden deduir correctament d'una matriu que relacioni l'eix metàfora-metonímia amb menes de codi ficació. E. Verón llançà una interessant reflexió sobre els modes analògic i digital, tot partint d'un problema semblant. Marques, etxes, ensenyes i miralls poden recordar bé operacions com senyalar i assenyalar, representar i reflectir, respectivament: estipular de manera aproximada com aquests objectes i aquestes operacions estan connectats podria ser una petita contribució a l'antic programa de Peirce i els altres.

With the shift towards many-core computer architectures, dataflow programming has been proposed as one potential solution for producing software that scales to a varying number of processor cores. Programming for parallel architectures is considered difficult as the current popular programming languages are inherently sequential and introducing parallelism is typically up to the programmer. Dataflow, however, is inherently parallel, describing an application as a directed graph, where nodes represent calculations and edges represent a data dependency in form of a queue. These queues are the only allowed communication between the nodes, making the dependencies between the nodes explicit and thereby also the parallelism. Once a node have the su cient inputs available, the node can, independently of any other node, perform calculations, consume inputs, and produce outputs. Data ow models have existed for several decades and have become popular for describing signal processing applications as the graph representation is a very natural representation within this eld. Digital lters are typically described with boxes and arrows also in textbooks. Data ow is also becoming more interesting in other domains, and in principle, any application working on an information stream ts the dataflow paradigm. Such applications are, among others, network protocols, cryptography, and multimedia applications. As an example, the MPEG group standardized a dataflow language called RVC-CAL to be use within reconfigurable video coding. Describing a video coder as a data ow network instead of with conventional programming languages, makes the coder more readable as it describes how the video dataflows through the different coding tools. While dataflow provides an intuitive representation for many applications, it also introduces some new problems that need to be solved in order for data ow to be more widely used. The explicit parallelism of a dataflow program is descriptive and enables an improved utilization of available processing units, however, the independent nodes also implies that some kind of scheduling is required. The need for efficient scheduling becomes even more evident when the number of nodes is larger than the number of processing units and several nodes are running concurrently on one processor core. There exist several data ow models of computation, with different trade-offs between expressiveness and analyzability. These vary from rather restricted but statically schedulable, with minimal scheduling overhead, to dynamic where each ring requires a ring rule to evaluated. The model used in this work, namely RVC-CAL, is a very expressive language, and in the general case it requires dynamic scheduling, however, the strong encapsulation of dataflow nodes enables analysis and the scheduling overhead can be reduced by using quasi-static, or piecewise static, scheduling techniques. The scheduling problem is concerned with nding the few scheduling decisions that must be run-time, while most decisions are pre-calculated. The result is then an, as small as possible, set of static schedules that are dynamically scheduled. To identify these dynamic decisions and to find the concrete schedules, this thesis shows how quasi-static scheduling can be represented as a model checking problem. This involves identifying the relevant information to generate a minimal but complete model to be used for model checking. The model must describe everything that may affect scheduling of the application while omitting everything else in order to avoid state space explosion. This kind of simplification is necessary to make the state space analysis feasible. For the model checker to nd the actual schedules, a set of scheduling strategies are de ned which are able to produce quasi-static schedulers for a wide range of applications. The results of this work show that actor composition with quasi-static scheduling can be used to transform data ow programs to t many different computer architecture with different type and number of cores. This in turn, enables dataflow to provide a more platform independent representation as one application can be fitted to a specific processor architecture without changing the actual program representation. Instead, the program representation is in the context of design space exploration optimized by the development tools to fit the target platform. This work focuses on representing the dataflow scheduling problem as a model checking problem and is implemented as part of a compiler infrastructure. The thesis also presents experimental results as evidence of the usefulness of the approach.

This paper, which is to be published as a chapter in the Oxford Handbook of Political Economy, provides an introduction to social-choice theory with interpersonal comparisons of well-being. We argue that the most promising route of escape from the negative conclusion of Arrow’s theorem is to use a richer informational environment than ordinal measurability and the absence of interpersonal comparability of well-being. We discuss welfarist social evaluation (which requires that the levels of individual well-being in two alternatives are the only determinants of their social ranking) and present characterizations of some important social-evaluation orderings.
