The present study has as main objectives the mapping and the analysis of fricatives in coda position in Galician-Portuguese religious songs of Alfonso X, the Wise King. The consonant system of BP, specifically with respect to fricatives, will be considered as object of study. The initial approach of the data, to establish whether there is opposition between the sounds represented by the focused graphemes, will be taken from the structuralism model (CAGLIARI, 2002). Thus, the elucidation of some characteristics of Portuguese linguistic background may contribute to clarify facts of its current structure

As a more extensive issue, this paper deals with the polysemy attested in all Romance languages between interrogative pronouns and subordination markers in complex sentences. It investigates, specifically, the behavior of objective complement clauses introduced by “como” (“how”) in constructions in which they occur as equivalent to the meaning of prototypical declarative complement clause introduced by the conjunction “que” (“that”). It analyzes complement clauses introduced by “como” and “que” occurring in representative Portuguese texts from the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries. The results of the comparative analysis between the two forms of clausal complement show that in archaic Portuguese “como” was used primarily to introduce complement clauses of factive verbs. When the complement clause is introduced by “como”, the content that is presupposed as true due to the meaning of matrix verb has reinforced this factuality. In the passage from the archaic to the modern period, there was a drastic decrease in the frequency of occurrences of complement clauses with “como”, which are replaced by the form of completive introduced by the conjunction “que” in the context of factual constructions. In contemporary Portuguese, this replacement is fully established. Complement clauses with “como” remain rare and limited to specific contexts in which “como” maintains its reinforcement function of factual meaning.

This study has as main aim to discuss the motivation for the non-occurrence of epenthetic vowel at the beginning of the word in the context of word junction in the first hundred Cantigas de Santa Maria (CSM – Afonso X, 1221-1284). Through this work and from a non-explored corpus (especially as for linguistic themes - SNOW, 1987, p. 478-480; MASSINI-CAGLIARI, 2005, p. 24-26), we intended to contribute to reaching a deeper knowledge of Portuguese prosody history in the period of its recognition as an “independent” language in relation to Latin.

This research aims to present and discuss three morphophonological processes – juxtaposition, allomorphy of the verbal thematic vowel and gemination of similar vowels – which occurs in word formation involving the suffixes -çon and -mento in a corpus composed of 420 Cantigas de Santa Maria. The cases analyzed in this study occurred with nouns from verbs of the first, second and third conjugations. Through the analysis of these processes we conclude that the suffix -çon triggers more morphophonological processes than the suffix -mento. However, although the processes are very productive, we note that most of the names were formed from the juxtaposition of the suffixes - especially in nouns formed with -mento – which shows a tendency to regularity in the word formation with these suffixes.

In the context of the confrontation between the several existing possibilities of comprehension of the term “innovation” in the Linguistic fields, the main goal of this paper is to explore the comprehension of this term considering the adoption of new methodologies, based on the analysis of a specific case, of the Research Group Phonology of Portuguese: Archaic and Brazilian periods, which investigates the phonology of a past period of the language from which there are no more alive native speakers.
