The ventrolateral periaqueductal gray is involved in the cardiovascular response evoked by L-glutamate microinjection into the lateral hypothalamus of anesthetized rats

Microinjection Of L-glutamate (L-glu: 1, 3, 10 and 30nmol/100nL) into the lateral hypothalamus (LH) caused dose-related depressor and bradycardiac responses. The cardiovascular response to L-glu stimulation of the LH was blocked by pretreatment of the ventrolateral portion of the periaqueductal gray matter (vIPAG) with CoCl(2) (1 mM/100nL), indicating the existence of a synaptic relay of the hypotensive pathway in that area. Furthermore, the response to L-glu Was blocked by pretreatment of the vIPAG with 2 nmol/100 nL of the selective NMDA-receptor antagonist LY235959 and was not affected by pretreatment with 2 nmol/100 nL of the selective non-NMDA-receptor antagonist NBQX, suggesting a mediation of the hypotensive response by NMDA receptors in the APAG. In conclusion, our results indicate that the hypotensive pathway activated by microinjection Of L-glu into the LH involves a NMDA synaptic relay in the vIPAG. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Modulation of tonic immobility in guinea pig PAG by homocysteic acid, a glutamate agonist

Tonic immobility (TI) is an innate defensive behavior elicited by physical restriction and postural inversion, and is characterized by a profound and temporary state of motor inhibition. The participation of the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) in TI modulation has previously been described. In addition, the excitatory amino acids (EAA) are important mediators involved in the adjustment of several defensive responses produced by PAG. In the present study, we investigated the effect of microinjection of the EAA agonist DL-homocysteic acid (DLH) and the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist (MK-801) into the ventrolateral and dorsal PAG over the duration of TI in guinea pigs. Microinjection of 15 nmol/0.2 mu l of DLH into the ventrolateral PAG (vlPAG) and 30 nmol/0.2 mu l of DLH into the dorsal PAG (dPAG) promoted an increase and decrease in TI duration, respectively. These responses were blocked by prior microinjection of the NMDA receptor antagonist, MK-801 (3.6 nmol/0.2 mu l) at the same site. Microinjection of MK-801 alone into the APAG and dPAG did not alter the duration of TI episodes. These results suggest that NMDA receptors are involved in the modulation of TI in both the vlPAG and dPAG. In addition, PAC excitatory amino acids modulate the TI response via columnar organization of the PAC. In this manner, the vlPAG facilitates TI modulation whereas dPAG has an inhibitory role in TI. Señor presidente no creo en vos; señor policía no temo de voz. Represión estatal y paramilitar y prácticas juveniles en los barrios Alameda, Brisas, Anita y Almendros

El estudio sobre la juventud y su relación con prácticas realizadas en los espacios públicos, especialmente la calle, ha tenido un renovado interés durante las últimas décadas. Estos debates se han vuelto relevantes en cuanto que los jóvenes parecen ocupar un lugar primordial en las escenas cotidianas de violencia, en particular los jóvenes de sectores populares. A través de un proceso etnográfico de carácter sistemático y sostenido en el tiempo identifico y explico las distintas interacciones de los jóvenes en los espacios públicos de cuatro barrios populares, centrando el análisis en las distintas formas de negociación con los actores armados, especialmente con la policía y el paramilitarismo. Lo que argumento es que hacer presencia en los espacios públicos, especialmente en la calle, termina por constituir en una opción de vida a través de los cuales fomentan una beligerancia social y política de resistencia pero ante todo como método que les permite proponer alternativas de existencia, por demás no violentas, frente a la violencia generalizada de la policía y el paramilitarismo. El problema radica en que muchas de las expresiones de algunos jóvenes terminan por reproducir los mecanismos de violencia del que son víctimas, aspecto que es identificado, por quienes acuden a la violencia, como una forma de reclamar un lugar en la comunidad, a permitirse ser reconocidos y escuchados y a sobrevivir en medio de una simultaneidad de violencias que cotidianamente los atropella y les vulnera los derechos. La violencia de estos jóvenes es una forma de no permitir que las esperanzas se diluyan, aunque paradójicamente también les puede quitar la vida
