In the present thesis, the geochemistry, petrology and geochronology of ophiolite complexes from central northern Greece were studied in detail in order to gain insights on the petrogenetic pathways and geodynamic processes that lead to their formation and evolution. The major- and trace-element content of minerals and whole rocks from all four ophiolite complexes was determined using high-precision analytical equipment. These results were then coupled with Nd and Sr isotopic measurements. In order to precisely place the evolution of these ophiolites in time, U-Pb geochronology on zircons was conducted using a SHRIMP-II. The data obtained suggest that the ophiolites studied invariably show typical characteristics of subduction-zone magmatism (e.g. negative Nb anomalies, Th enrichment). In N-MORB-normalised multielement profiles the high field-strength elements display patterns that vary from depleted to N-MORB-like. Chondrite-normalised rare-earth element (REE) profiles show flat heavy-REE patterns suggesting a shallow regime of source melting for all the ophiolites, well within the stability field of spinel lherzolite. The majority of the samples have light-REE depleted patterns. 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios range from 0.703184 to 0.715853 and are in cases influenced by alteration. The εNd values are positive (the majority of the mafic samples is typically 7.1-3.1) but lower than N-MORB and depleted mantle. With the exception of the Thessaloniki ophiolite that has uniform island-arc tholeiitic chemical characteristics, the rest of the ophiolites show dual chemistry consisting of rocks with minor subduction-zone characteristics that resemble chemically back-arc basin basalts (BABB) and rocks with more pronounced subduction-zone characteristics. Tectonomagmatic discrimination schemes classify the samples as island-arc tholeiites and back-arc basin basalts or N-MORB. Melting modelling carried out to evaluate source properties and degree of melting verifies the dual nature of the ophiolites. The samples that resemble back-arc basin basalts require very small degrees of melting (<10%) of fertile sources, whereas the rest of the samples require higher degrees (25-15%) of melting. As deduced from the present geochemical and petrological investigation, the ophiolites from Guevguely, Oraeokastro, Thessaloniki, and Chalkidiki represent relics of supra-subduction zone crust that formed in succeeding stages of island-arc rifting and back-arc spreading as well as in a fore arc setting. The geochronological results have provided precise determination of the timing of formation of these complexes. The age of the Guevguely ophiolite has been determined as 167±1.2 Ma, that of Thessaloniki as 169±1.4 Ma, that of Kassandra as 167±2.2 Ma and that of Sithonia as 160±1.2 Ma.

The distribution and accumulation of the rare earth elements (REE) in the sediments of the Cochin Estuary and adjacent continental shelf were investigated. The rare earth elements like La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and the heavy metals like Mg, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, U, Th were analysed by using standard analytical methods. The Post-Archean Australian Shale composition was used to normalise the rare earth elements. It was found that the sediments were more enriched with the lighter rare earth elements than the heavier ones. The positive correlation between the concentrations of REE, Fe and Mn could explain the precipitation of oxyhydroxides in the study area. The factor analysis and correlation analysis suggest common sources of origin for the REEs. From the Ce-anomalies calculated, it was found that an oxic environment predominates in all stations except the station No. 2. The Eu-anomaly gave an idea that the origin of REEs may be from the feldspar. The parameters like total organic carbon, U/Th ratio, authigenic U, Cu/Zn, V/Cr ratios revealed the oxic environment and thus the depositional behaviour of REEs in the region

FISH has been used as a complement to classical cytogenetics in the detection of mosaicism in sex chromosome anomalies. The aim of this study is to describe three cases in which the final diagnosis could only be achieved by FISH. Case 1 was an 8-year-old 46,XY girl with normal female genitalia referred to our service because of short stature. FISH analysis of lymphocytes with probes for the X and Y centromeres identified a 45,X/46,X,idic(Y) constitution, and established the diagnosis of Turner syndrome. Case 2 was a 21-month-old 46,XY boy with genital ambiguity (penile hypospadias, right testis, and left streak gonad). FISH analysis of lymphocytes and buccal smear identified a 45,X/46,XY karyotype, leading to diagnosis of mixed gonadal dysgenesis. Case 3 was a 47,XYY 19-year-old boy with delayed neuromotor development, learning disabilities, psychological problems, tall stature, small testes, elevated gonadotropins, and azoospermia. FISH analysis of lymphocytes and buccal smear identified a 47,XYY/48,XXYY constitution. Cases 1 and 2 illustrate the phenotypic variability of the 45,X/46,XY mosaicism, and the importance of detection of the 45,X cell line for proper management and follow-up. In case 3, abnormal gonadal function could be explained by the 48,XXYY cell line. The use of FISH in clinical practice is particularly relevant when classical cytogenetic analysis yields normal or uncertain results in patients with features of sex chromosome aneuploidy. PURPOSE: Dental fusion is defined as the union of two dental germs at some stage of their development. The aim of this article is to report the endodontic treatment of two clinical cases of dental fusion. CASE DESCRIPTION: In the first case, the patient was referred by an orthodontist for endodontic treatment of tooth 12, which was fused to 13. Surgical separation and later replacement of the involved elements in the dental arch was indicated. In the second case, the patient sought dental attendance due to spontaneous pain. In the radiographic exam, gemination in tooth 11 and fusion of 21 with a supernumerary tooth was observed. The fused teeth were endodontically treated, and patients were referred to other dental specialties to reestablish esthetics and function. CONCLUSION: The dentist must be able to diagnose, differentiate and treat these dental anomalies adequately, with the goal of maintaining patients' oral health.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of dental anomalies in patients with agenesis of second premolars and compare the findings with the prevalence of these anomalies in the general population. Materials and Methods: A Brazilian sample of 203 patients aged 8 to 22 years was selected. All patients presented agenesis of at least one second premolar. Panoramic and periapical radiographs and dental casts were used to analyze the presence of other associated dental anomalies, including agenesis of other permanent teeth, ectopia of unerupted permanent teeth, infraocclusion of deciduous molars, microdontia of maxillary lateral incisors, and supernumerary teeth. The occurrence of these anomalies was compared with occurrence data previously reported for the general population. Statistical testing was performed using the chi-square test (P < .05) and the odds ratio. Results: The sample with agenesis of at least one second premolar presented a significantly increased prevalence rate of permanent tooth agenesis (21%), excluding third molars. Among the sample segment aged 14 years or greater (N = 77), occurrence of third-molar agenesis (48%) exceeded twice its normal frequency. Significant increases in occurrence of microdontia of maxillary lateral incisors (20.6%), infraocclusion of deciduous molars (24.6%), and distoangulation of mandibular second premolars (7.8%) were observed. Palatally displaced canine anomaly was also significantly elevated (8.1%). Conclusion: The results provide evidence that agenesis of other permanent teeth, microdontia, deciduous molar infraocclusion, and certain dental ectopias are the products of the same genetic mechanisms that cause second-premolar agenesis. Since the beginning of Physical Education entrance in the brazilin public schools, the game has been frequently used as content, and in the course of time that practice seems to be intensified. In spite of many approaches of different purposes to justify its pedagogic usefulness, the game has been used as an indiscriminate way due to the fascination that it provides to the students. The present study searches for a description and analysis of children`s (10-12 years old) attitudes behaviors in games, on Physical Education classes, inside a public school. The study was accomplished with the researcher also attending as a teacher (action research). For the accomplishment of the study 55 children were filmed in four different games, of different kinds (exposed, transformed, and spontaneous). The classes` description and analysis were focused in the attitude axis and it was defined four topics for the discussion: Conflicts, Respect of rules, Expressiveness, and Competitiveness. The relationship between the individual with the game and its culture were pointed as the main characteristics in the configuration of the ludicrous activity atmosphere. It was also possible to observe specific situations of this relationship, once the games were limited to the social games (Piaget category), in a school atmosphere where children have students roles. Due to the obtained results, the study proposes a reflexive practice in which the students notice their own attitudes and try to adapt the game to their needs and not he other way around. In this perspective, the teacher has an important mediator roll, once he will be responsible to point out the students` difficulties and promote discussions in favor to provide teamwork.

The existence of a new metallic carbide of composition Th(3)Ni(5)C(5) was reported in the literature in 1991. This compound is a new orthorhombic prototype structure. In this work we report a reinvestigation of the synthesis of this material and we find that the Th(3)Ni(5)C(5) compound is a new bulk superconducting material. Despite the high concentration of Ni in this compound, we find bulk superconductivity with superconducting critical temperature of T(c) = 5.0 K and an upper critical field of mu(o)H(c2) = 5.8 T. Details of the superconducting state with specific heat, magnetization, and resistivity measurements are discussed.

Control of the acute phase of Trypanosoma cruzi infection is critically dependent on cytokine-mediated macrophage activation to intracellular killing, natural killer (NK) cells, CD4(+) T cells, CD8(+) T cells and B cells. Cell-mediated immunity in T. cruzi infection is also modulated by cytokines, but in addition to parasite-specific responses, autoimmunity can be also triggered. Importantly, cytokines may also play a role in the cell-mediated immunity of infected subjects. Here we studied the role of cytokines in the regulation of innate and adaptive immunity during the acute phase of T. cruzi infection in Wistar rats. Melatonin is an effective regulator of the immune system. Macrophages and T lymphocytes, which have melatonin receptors, are target cells for the immunomodulatory function of melatonin. In this paper melatonin was orally given via two protocols: prior to and concomitant with infection. Both treatments were highly effective against T. cruzi with enhanced action for the concomitant treatment. The data suggest an up-regulation of the TH-1 immune response as all analyzed parameters, interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, transforming growth factor-beta 1 and splenocyte proliferation, displayed reduced levels as compared with the untreated counterparts. However, the direct effects of melatonin on immune cells have not been fully investigated during T. cruzi infection. We conclude that in light of the current results, melatonin exerted important therapeutic benefits through its immune regulatory effects.

Chagas` disease is considered the sixth most important neglected tropical disease worldwide. Considerable knowledge has been accumulated concerning the role of zinc on cellular immunity. The steroid hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is also known to modulate the immune system. The aims of this paper were to investigate a possible synchronization of their effects on cytokines and NO production and the resistance to Trypanosoma cruzi during the acute phase of infection. It was found that zinc, DHEA or zinc and DHEA supplementation enhanced the immune response, as evidenced by a significant reduction in parasitemia levels. Zinc and DHEA supplementation exerted additive effects on the immune response by elevation of macrophage counts, and by increasing concentrations of IFN-gamma and NO. (C) 2009 Elsevier GmbH. We show how the coupling between the phonons and electrons in a strongly correlated metal can result in phonon frequencies that have a nonmonotonic temperature dependence. Dynamical mean-field theory is used to study the Hubbard-Holstein model that describes the kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)X [where BEDT-TTF is bis-(ethylenedithia-tetrathiafulvalene)] family of superconducting molecular crystals. The crossover with increasing temperature from a Fermi liquid to a bad metal produces phonon anomalies that are relevant to recent Raman scattering and acoustic experiments.

P-II is a signal transduction protein that is part of the cellular machinery used by many bacteria to regulate the activity of glutamine synthetase and the transcription of its gene. The structure of P-II was solved using a hexagonal crystal form (form I). The more physiologically relevant form of P-II is a complex with small molecule effecters. We describe the structure of P-II with ATP obtained by analysis of two different crystal forms (forms II and III) that were obtained by co-crystallization of P-II with ATP. Both structures have a disordered recognition (T) loop and show differences at their C termini. Comparison of these structures with the form I protein reveals changes that occur on binding ATP. Surprisingly, the structure of the P-II/ATP complex differs with that of GlnK, a functional homologue. The two proteins bind the base and sugar of ATP in a similar manner but show differences in the way that they interact with the phosphates. The differences in structure could account for the differences in their activities, and these have been attributed to a difference in sequence at position 82. It has been demonstrated recently that P-II and GlnK form functional heterotrimers in vivo. We construct models of the heterotrimers and examine the junction between the subunits.

Using detailed Australian wool auction data we test for further evidence of pricing anomalies at sequential auctions. We find that an anomaly frequently exists and order is frequently endogenously determined. Moreover, prices increase through some sales and decrease through others. We examine whether it is possible to explain the variation in the anomaly across sales and conclude that there is no systematic relationship between the direction of the price anomaly and the characteristics of the wool or the auction. We do, however, find evidence that an anomaly, is more likely in longer sales.
