Mood, persistence, and success

Tested the hypothesis that level of performance and persistence in completing tasks is affected by mood. 44 female and 41 male college students received tape-recorded instructions to recall vividly happy or sad experiences or to imagine a neutral situation. Results for the primary dependent variables on which a mood difference was predicted were analyzed with a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). After the induction happy Ss persisted longer at an anagrams task and solved more anagrams than sad Ss. Women were also faster at reaching solutions when happy than sad. Results support the hypothesis that positive moods promote persistence and ultimate success, but they raise questions about the role of self-efficacy and the sources of gender differences.

La enseñanza de Inglés mediante ordenador.

El proyecto intenta, a partir de un enfoque comunicativo, unir enseñanza de idiomas y tecnología, la segunda como aplicación coherente de las ventajas del ordenador para este tipo de enseñanza. Pretende además, despertar el interés del alumno por el uso del ordenador y desarrollar en él destrezas operativas y manipulativas respecto de éste como instrumento de trabajo. Otro de los objetivos era mejorar las destrezas comunicativas y secuenciar la adquisición de otras destrezas de lecto-escritura acercando el proceso de adquisición de la L2 al de la L1 (lengua materna). A comienzos del curso 93-94 se comenzó la progresiva integración del CALL dentro del programa de Inglés del curso con una dedicación de una o dos horas semanales de las cinco dedicadas al idioma. Se llevó a cabo en la sala de ordenadores del centro a la que acudían en grupos de 22 personas y 2 alumnos por ordenador. Se aplicó a un total de 200 alumnos de quinto, sexto,séptimo, octavo y primero de BUP que ya conocían la metodología desde su incorporación al centro y a otros grupos especiales de preparación de los exámenes Cambridge. Se seleccionaron 11 temas : People, Inventions and Discoveries, Travelling, Ecology, Animals, Sports, Future, Free Time, Cinema, Music and Nature. Los contenidos seleccionados eran de dos tipos: los que proporcionaban los programas adquiridos, en la mayoría de los casos secuenciados por niveles y por temas, y los que el profesor y los alumnos incorporaban con el editor. Una vez elegido el vocabulario que se consideraba que los alumnos debían trabajar en estos niveles educativos, se procedió a la elaboración de los ejercicios donde se incluían los items seleccionados. Para ello se recogieron 6 actividades tipo, relacionadas con la adquisición de vocabulario y con su evaluación. Estos fueron básicamente: definición, palabras que faltan, ordenar una frase, verdad-mentira, elección múltiple, cloze. Se comprobó que la individualización e interacción de alumnos con el ordenador repercute en la eficacia, y el CALL es especialmente efectivo en el caso de la lecto-escritura, y para la adquisición de vocabulario y la transferencia de vocabulario pasivo a activo. Queda demostrado que el CALL es un medio de enseñanza que debe tener un lugar integrado en el conjunto de recursos didácticos del programa. Se utilizaron los programas: Striptext, Time, Numbers and Prepositions, Reading Exercices, Fast Fingers, Coptone Down, Nought and Crosses, Rank Order, Multitester, Dealing with texts, Comparative and Superlative, First Certificate, Which Word, Anagrams, Alphagrame, Mind Word, Word Order, Vocabulary WordStore.

Anagrams and syllabic wordplay of the kind championed by Frederick Ahl in his Metaformations have not always been favourably received by scholars of Latin poetry; I would hesitate to propose the following instance, were it not for the fact that its occurrence seems peculiarly apposite to the context in which it appears. That Roman poets were prepared to use such techniques to enhance the presentation of an argument by exemplifying its operation at a verbal level is demonstrated by the famous passage of Lucretius (DRN 1.907–14; also 1.891–2) in which the poet seeks to illustrate the tendency of semina … ardoris to create fire in wood by the literal presence of elements from the word for ‘fires’ (IGNes) in that denoting wood (lIGNum). A similar conception may underlie the association insinuated by the love elegists between amor and mors, suggesting that death is somehow ‘written into’ love: so Propertius declares laus in amore mori (2.1.47), while Tibullus appears to point to the lurking presence of death in the pursuit of love in the lines interea, dum fata sinunt, iungamus amores: | iam ueniet tenebris Mors adoperta caput (1.1.69–70) – so swift and unexpected is death's approach that it is already present in aMOReS in the preceding line. Ovid's awareness of the poetic potential of this kind of play (if that is the right word for it) is fully exhibited in his celebrated account of Echo and Narcissus in Metamorphoses 3, where the subject matter gives the poet ample scope to exploit the humorous and pathetic possibilities afforded by Echo's fragmented repetitions of the frustrated entreaties of her beloved.

Kriterien effizienter Informationsverarbeitung als Prädiktoren des Karriereerfolgs

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit Kriterien effizienter und flexibler Informationsverarbeitung und deren Auswirkungen auf den Karriereerfolg. Die Kriterien Interferenz, Interferenz unter der negativen Priming-Bedingung und die Spontanflexibilität wurden in drei aufeinander aufbauenden Studien untersucht. Die Interferenzindices wurden mit einer modifizierten Form des Stroop-Tests erhoben, und das Konstrukt der Spontanflexibilität wurde mit der Gauß-Aufgabe, der Wasserumschüttaufgabe, dem Wortgruppentest und der Anagramm-Aufgabe operationalisiert. Bei diesen Aufgaben wurde eine Lösungsstrategie vorgegeben, aber es gab zusätzlich eine effizientere Lösungsstrategie, die während der Bearbeitung der Einzelaufgaben immer offensichtlicher wurde. Da die einzelnen Aufgaben nicht signifikant miteinander korrelierten, wurde im Rahmen einer Nachuntersuchung die Reliabilität über Parallelaufgaben geprüft. Für die Diagnose von Gruppenunterschieden erwiesen sich die Indikatoren der Spontanflexibilität als hinreichend reliabel. Die Wortdarbietungszeiten der Interferenzindices waren hochreliabel. Zwischen den Interferenzindices zeigte sich ein starker positiver Zusammenhang. Zur Validierung der Aufgaben wurden Beurteilungen über die berufliche Leistung der Versuchsteilnehmer herangezogen. Zwischen den einzelnen Beurteilungskriterien zeigten sich hohe Zusammenhänge. Die Gauß-Aufgabe korrelierte mit einem Beurteilungskriterium, dessen Verhaltensbeschreibungen sehr gut mit der Definition der Spontanflexibilität übereinstimmten. Die Wasserumschüttaufgabe korrelierte mit einem Beurteilungskriterium, welches eher eine durch die Situation herausgeforderte Flexibilität widerspiegelt. Die Interferenzindikatoren korrelierten mit Beurteilungskriterien, die zum einen die Fähigkeit zum Aufbauen von professionellen Beziehungen und zum anderen die Effizienz und den Qualitätsstandard eines Mitarbeiters bewerteten. Aufgrund der replizierten Zusammenhänge kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass die Interferenz, die Interferenz unter der negativen Priming-Bedingung, die Spontanflexibilität und die herausgeforderte Flexibilität Einfluss auf den Karriereerfolg eines Mitarbeiters nehmen. Aus diesem Grund bieten sich im Bereich der Arbeits- und Organisationspsychologie vielversprechende Einsatzmöglichkeiten für die in dieser Untersuchung entwickelten Tests an.
