A series of nano-sized Ni/Al2O3 and Ni/La-Al2O3 catalysts that possess high activities for NH3 decomposition have been successfully synthesized by a coprecipitation method. The catalytic performance was investigated under the atmospheric conditions and a significant enhancement in the activity after the introduction of La was observed. Aiming to study the influence of La promoter on the physicochemical properties, we characterized the catalysts by N-2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, H-2-TPR, chemisorption and TEM techniques. Physisorption results suggested a high specific surface area and XRD spectra showed that nickel particles are in a highly dispersed state. A combination of XRD, TEM and chemisorption showed that Ni-0 particles with the average size lower, than 5.0 nm are always obtained even though the Ni loading ranged widely from 4 to 63 %. Compared with the Ni/Al2O3 catalysts, the Ni/La-Al2O3 ones with an appropriate amount of promoter enjoy a more open mesoporous structure and higher dispersion of Ni. Reduction kinetic studies of prepared catalysts were investigated by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) method and the fact that La additive partially destroyed the metastable Ni-Al mixed oxide phase was detailed. Microcalorimetric studies of H-2, NH3 and O-2 adsorption, as well as the NH3 decomposition activities evaluation were used to characterize the iridium catalysts for hydrazine decomposition with different supports (Al2O3, SiO,) and iridium contents (1.8, 10.8 and 22.1%). The higher H-2 chemisorption amounts on Ir/Al2O3 catalysts than those on the corresponding Ir/SiO2 counterparts revealed that the strong interaction of iridium and Al2O3 led to higher dispersion of iridium on Ir/Al2O3 catalysts than on Ir/SiO2 catalysts. The larger increase in strong H-2 adsorption sites on highly loaded Ir/Al2O3 than the corresponding Ir/SiO2 ones could be attributed to the interaction not only between iridium atoms but also between iridium and Al2O3. The microcalorimetric results for NH3 adsorption showed that no apparent chemisorption of NH3 existed on Ir/SiO2 catalysts while NH3 chemisorption amounts increased on Ir/Al2O3 catalysts with iridium loadings, which arose from the interaction of the catalysts support of Al2O3 With chloride anion. Both highly dispersed iridium active sites and chloride anion on Ir/Al2O3 catalysts could be beneficial to the intermediate NH3 decomposition in N2H4 decomposition. The similar O-2 plots of differential heat versus normalized coverage on Ir/Al2O3 and Ir/SiO2 catalysts could not be due to the metal-support interaction, but to the formation of strong Ir-O bond. The turbostratic mesoporous carbon blacks were prepared by catalytic chemical vapour decomposition (CCVD) of acetylene using Ni/MgO catalysts prepared by co-precipitation. The relationship between deposition conditions and the nanostructures of resultant carbon black materials was investigated. It was found that the turbostratic and textural structures of carbon blacks are dependent on the deposition temperature and nickel catalyst loading. Higher deposition temperature increases the carbon crystallite unit volume V-nano and reduces the surface area of carbon samples. Moreover, a smaller V-nano is produced by a higher Ni loading at the same deposition temperature. In addition of the pore structure and the active metal surface area of the catalyst, the graphitic degree or electronic conductivity of the carbon support is also a key issue to the activity of the supported catalyst. V-nano is a very useful parameter to describe the effect of the crystalline structure of carbon blacks on the reactivity of carbon blacks in oxygen-carbon reaction and the catalytic activity of carbon-supported catalyst in ammonia decomposition semi-quantitatively. Boron–nitrogen containing compounds with high hydrogen contents as represented by ammonia borane (NH3BH3) have recently attracted intense interest for potential hydrogen storage applications. One such compound is [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 with a capacity of 18.2 wt% H. Two safe and efficient synthetic routes to [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 have been developed for the first time since it was discovered 50 years ago. The new synthetic routes avoid a dangerous starting chemical, tetraborane (B4H10), and afford a high yield. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals N–Hδ+Hδ−–B dihydrogen interactions in the [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8·18-crown-6 adduct. Extended strong dihydrogen bonds were observed in pure [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 through crystal structure solution based upon powder X-ray analysis. Pyrolysis of [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 leads to the formation of hydrogen gas together with appreciable amounts of volatile boranes below 160 °C.

The thermal decomposition of hydronium jarosite and ammoniojarosite was studied using thermogravimetric analysis and mass spectrometry, in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and infrared emission spectroscopy. There was no evidence for the simultaneous loss of water and sulfur dioxide during the desulfonation stage as has previously been reported for hydronium jarosite. Conversely, all hydrogen atoms are lost during the dehydration and dehydroxylation stage from 270 to 400 °C and no water, hydroxyl groups or hydronium ions persist after 400 °C. The same can be said for ammoniojarosite. The first mass loss step during the decomposition of hydronium jarosite has been assigned to the loss of the hydronium ion via protonation of the surrounding hydroxyl groups to evolve two water molecules. For ammoniojarosite, this step corresponds to the protonation of a hydroxyl group by ammonium, so that ammonia and water are liberated simultaneously. Iron(II) sulfate was identified as a possible intermediate during the decomposition of ammoniojarosite (421–521 °C) due to a redox reaction between iron(III) and the liberated ammonia during decomposition. Iron(II) ions were also confirmed with the 1,10-phenanthroline test. Iron(III) sulfate and other commonly suggested intermediates for hydronium and ammoniojarosite decomposition are not major crystalline phases; if they are formed, then they most likely exist as an amorphous phase or a different low temperature phases than usual.

This thesis deals with the response of biodegradation of selected anthropogenic organic contaminants and natural autochthonous organic matter to low temperature in boreal surface soils. Furthermore, the thesis describes activity, diversity and population size of autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in a boreal soil used for landfarming of oil-refinery wastes, and presents a new approach, in which the particular AOB were enriched and cultivated in situ from the landfarming soil onto cation exchange membranes. This thesis demonstrates that rhizosphere fraction of natural forest humus soil and agricultural clay loam soil from Helsinki Metropolitan area were capable of degrading of low to moderate concentrations (0.2 50 µg cm-3) of PCP, phenanthrene and 2,4,5-TCP at temperatures realistic to boreal climate (-2.5 to +15 °C). At the low temperatures, the biodegradation of PCP, phenanthrene and 2,4,5-TCP was more effective (Q10-values from 1.6 to 7.6) in the rhizosphere fraction of the forest soil than in the agricultural soil. Q10-values of endogenous soil respiration (carbon dioxide evolution) and selected hydrolytic enzyme activities (acetate-esterase, butyrate-esterase and β-glucosidase) in acid coniferous forest soil were 1.6 to 2.8 at temperatures from -3 to +30 °C. The results indicated that the temperature dependence of decomposition of natural autochthonous soil organic matter in the studied coniferous forest was only moderate. The numbers of AOB in the landfarming (sandy clay loam) soil were determined with quantitative polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) and with Most Probable Number (MPN) methods, and potential ammonium oxidation activity was measured with the chlorate inhibition technique. The results indicated presence of large and active AOB populations in the heavily oil-contaminated and urea-fertilised landfarming soil. Assessment of the populations of AOB with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profiling and sequence analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA genes showed that Nitrosospira-like AOB in clusters 2 and 3 were predominant in the oily landfarming soil. This observation was supported by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of the AOB grown on the soil-incubated cation-exchange membranes. The results of this thesis expand the suggested importance of Nitrosospira-like AOB in terrestrial environments to include chronically oil-contaminated soils.

Preparation of simple and mixed ferrospinels of nickel, cobalt and copper and their sulphated analogues by the room temperature coprecipitation method yielded fine particles with high surface areas. Study of the vapour phase decomposition of cyclohexanol at 300 °C over all the ferrospinel systems showed very good conversions yielding cyclohexene by dehydration and/or cyclohexanone by dehydrogenation, as the major products. Sulphation very much enhanced the dehydration activity over all the samples. A good correlation was obtained between the dehydration activities of the simple ferrites and their weak plus medium strength acidities (usually of the Brφnsted type) determined independently by the n-butylamine adsorption and ammonia-TPD methods. Mixed ferrites containing copper showed a general decrease in acidities and a drastic decrease in dehydration activities. There was no general correlation between the basicity parameters obtained by electron donor studies and the ratio of dehydrogenation to dehydration activities. There was a leap in the dehydrogenation activities in the case of all the ferrospinel samples containing copper. Along with the basic properties, the redox properties of copper ion have been invoked to account for this added activity.

Cyclohexanol decomposition activity of supported vanadia catalysts is ascribed to the high surface area, total acidity and interaction between supported vanadia and the amorphous support. Among the supported catalysts, the effect of vanadia over various wt% V2O5 (2–10) loading indicates that the catalyst comprising of 6 wt% V2O5 exhibits higher acidity and decomposition activity. Structural characterization of the catalysts has been done by techniques like energy dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction and BET surface area. Acidity of the catalysts has been measured by temperature programmed desorption using ammonia as a probe molecule and the results have been correlated with the activity of catalysts.
