The eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010 lasted for 39 days, 14 April-23 May. The eruption had two explosive phases separated by a phase with lava formation and reduced explosive activity. The height of the plume was monitored every 5 min with a C-band weather radar located in Keflavík International Airport, 155 km distance from the volcano. Furthermore, several web cameras were mounted with a view of the volcano, and their images saved every five seconds. Time series of the plume-top altitude were constructed from the radar observations and images from a web camera located in the village Hvolsvöllur at 34 km distance from the volcano. This paper presents the independent radar and web camera time series and performs cross validation.

The eight-year record of mass balance of Peyto Glacier is correlated to meteorological data measured near the glacier and at Lake Louise 30 km to the south. The period investigated includes the llighest and lowest accumulations for the past 40 years. The primar'y controls of net annual balance are seen to be the depth of the 'winter sno,y pack and the temperature record during the summer. Extensive summer snowfalls in the ablation area can slow down melt rates very considerably and affect the net annual balance positively. The variable nature of winter accumulation and its influence on snowline retreat and ice melt is illustrated by three years' data.

We derive tropospheric column BrO during the ARCTAS and ARCPAC field campaigns in spring 2008 using retrievals of total column BrO from the satellite UV nadir sensors OMI and GOME-2 using a radiative transfer model and stratospheric column BrO from a photochemical simulation. We conduct a comprehensive comparison of satellite-derived tropospheric BrO column to aircraft in-situ observations of BrO and related species. The aircraft profiles reveal that tropospheric BrO, when present during April 2008, was distributed over a broad range of altitudes rather than being confined to the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Perturbations to the total column resulting from tropospheric BrO are the same magnitude as perturbations due to longitudinal variations in the stratospheric component, so proper accounting of the stratospheric signal is essential for accurate determination of satellite-derived tropospheric BrO. We find reasonably good agreement between satellite-derived tropospheric BrO and columns found using aircraft in-situ BrO profiles, particularly when satellite radiances were obtained over bright surfaces (albedo >0.7), for solar zenith angle <80° and clear sky conditions. The rapid activation of BrO due to surface processes (the bromine explosion) is apparent in both the OMI and GOME-2 based tropospheric columns. The wide orbital swath of OMI allows examination of the evolution of tropospheric BrO on about hourly time intervals near the pole. Low surface pressure, strong wind, and high PBL height are associated with an observed BrO activation event, supporting the notion of bromine activation by high winds over snow.

Results of the direct, glaciological determination of the mass budget of Hintereisferner and Kesselwandferner in the Ötztal Alps are summarized for the years 1977/78-1980/81. Tabulations of budget quantities, accumulation and ablation areas are supplemented by graphs of altitudinal and areal distribution of mass balance and by examples of the seasonal course of ablation.

This study’s main goal was to evaluate the thermoregulatory responses velocity through the variation of rectal temperature (RT), related to the thermolytic pathways, respiratory rate (RR) and sweating rate (SR) among different sheep breeds. Ninety female sheep, eighteen of each breed: Santa Ines and Morada Nova (Brazilian hair breeds), Texel, Suffolk and Ile de France (wool breeds) were challenged during three non-consecutive summer days (22◦42′S, 47◦18′W, and 570m of altitude, maximum air temperature of 33.5◦C, average relative humidity of 52±6.9%). The physiological variables were registered at 0800h (T1), 1300 h (T2: after 2 h of shade rest), 1400 h (T3) (after one hour of sun exposure) and in the shade at 1415 h (T4), 1430 h (T5), 1445 h (T6) and 1500 h (T7) and a thermotolerance index (TCI) was calculated as (10-(T7 to T4)-T1). The statistical analysis was performed by a mathematical model including the fixed effects of breeds and time frames, and the interaction between these effects, besides random effects such as animal and day. The Santa Ines breed presented the lowest RT after sun exposure (39.3 ± 0.12 ◦ C; P < 0.05) and it was the only one to recover morning RT 60 min after heat stress (38.7 and 38.9 for 1300 h and 1500 h; P > 0.05). Hair breeds presented RR lower (P < 0.05) than wool breeds. Although thick wool or hair thickness differs among and within hair and wool breeds (P < 0.05), SR did not differ among breeds and time (227.7 ± 16.44 g m−2 h−1 ; P > 0.05). The thermotolerance index did not differ among breeds, but it showed similar response (P > 0.05) 45 min or 1 h of shade after sun exposure. One week post shearing is not enough to wool breeds present to show thermotolerance similar to hair breeds.

Altitude variations of the mass concentration of black carbon, number concentration of composite aerosols are examined along with the columnar spectral aerosol optical depths using state of the art instruments and the Angstrom parameters are inferred from the ground based measurements at several altitude levels, en route from Manora Peak, Nainital (similar to 1950 m above mean sea level) to a low altitude station Haldwani (similar to 330 m above mean sea level) at its foothill within an aerial distance of <10,000 m. The measurements were done during the winter months (November-February) of 2005, 2006 and 2007 under fair weather conditions. The results show a rapid decrease in all the measured parameters with increase in altitude, with >60% contribution to the AOD coming from the regions below 1000 m. The Angstrom wavelength exponent remained high in the well mixed region, and decreased above. The normalized AOD gradient was used to estimate aerosol mixing height, which was found to be in the altitude range 1000-1500 m, above which the particle concentrations are slowly varying as a function of altitude. The heating rate at the surface is found to be maximum but decreases sharply with increase in altitude. Analysis of the wavelength dependence of absorption aerosol optical depth (AAOD) showed that the aerosol absorption over the site is generally due to mixed aerosols. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
