Analysis of oxy-fuel combustion as an alternative to combustion with air in metal reheating furnaces
Resumo:
Using oxygen instead of air in a burning process is at present being widely discussed as an option to reduce CO2 emissions. One of the possibilities is to maintain the combustion reaction at the same energy release level as burning with air, which reduces fuel consumption and the emission rates of CO2. A thermal simulation was made for metal reheating furnaces, which operate at a temperature in the range of 1150-1250 degrees C, using natural gas with a 5% excess of oxygen, maintaining fixed values for pressure and combustion temperature. The theoretical results show that it is possible to reduce the consumption of fuel, and this reduction depends on the amount of heat that can be recovered during the air pre-heating process. The analysis was further conducted by considering the 2012 costs of natural gas and oxygen in Brazil. The use of oxygen showed to be economically viable for large furnaces that operate with conventional heat recovering systems (those that provide pre-heated air at temperatures near 400 degrees C). A combustion synthesis of lithium niobate (LN) squares from activated niobium oxide (Nb2 O5.nH2O) and Li2CO3 was studied to understand all the chemical reactions involved, and the nucleation and square-growth mechanisms. It was found that first the lithium ions react with the fuel (urea), then niobium ions of Nb2 O5.nH2O begin a continuous reaction with the fuel to form metal-organic complexes. LN nuclei are formed by the solid-state reaction of Li- and Nb-organic complexes at 430 degrees celcius. Lithium niobate squares are obtained in the crystallization stasge at 700 degrees celcius, which go on the grow into larger squares at 850 degrees celcius because of the agglomeration effect.

Flare tips are essential for safety. Maintenance is difficult and costly. Flare tips are subjected to high combustion temperatures, thermal cycling, oxidation and marine corrosion. Following a number of flare tip failures an in depth study by Imperial College was carried out into the failure of a flare tip from a UK platform, looking for service life improvement. Materials selection and design solutions were considered. The study considered alternative materials and concluded that materials selection was the smaller part of the answer; design changes can double service life. This study used failure investigation, high temperature experimental and thermo-mechanical modelling analysis. The modelling process simulated two common flaring conditions and correctly predicted the observed failure of initiation and crack propagation from holes used to bolt on flame stabilizing plates to the top of the flare. The calculated thermal stress and strains enabled the low cycle fatigue life and minimum creep life to be predicted. It was concluded that service life could be improved by replacing Incoloy alloy 800HT (UNS N08800) with Inconel alloy 625 (UNS N06625), an alloy with attractive mechanical properties and improved high temperature corrosion resistance. Repositioning or eliminating bolt holes can double service life. Copyright 2008, Society of Petroleum Engineers.

A quantitative study was made about the effects caused by ionizing irradiation on materials used for dental restoration (amalgams, compound resins and compomere), aiming to alleviate in bearers of head and neck cancer, the possible harmful effects of radiotherapy perceived when the repaired teething is within the radiation field. Research also encourages further studies for new alternative materials to be used in dental repair of patients submitted to radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Test samples were submitted to a gamma radiation beam coming from a cobalt-therapy source and analyzed according to the X-ray fluorescence technique, comparing the chemical composition of the samples before and after irradiation. Radiation detectors such as an ionization chamber and a Geiger-Muller were used to measure the rate of residual dose. Gamma spectrometry with Nal detectors was also performed on the same samples. Results showed that there was no significant change in the chemical composition and that at post-irradiation, samples did not exhibit radiation emission, that is to say they had not become radioactive.

An atmospheric combustion apparatus was designed through several iterations for Bucknell University's combustion laboratory. The final design required extensive fine-tuning of the fuel and air systems and repeated tests to arrive at a satisfactory procedure to transfer from gaseous to liquid fuel operation. Measurement of exhaust emissions were obtained under tests of gaseous methane and liquid heptane were operation in order to validate the functionality of the combustion apparatus, the fuel transition procedure, and emissions analyzer systems. The emission concentrations of CO, CO2, NOx, 02, S02, and unburned hydrocarbons from a multianalyzer and HFID analyzer were obtained for a range of equivalence ratios. The results verify the potential for future alternative fuel tests and illuminate necessary alterations for further liquid fuel studies.

Various piezoelectric polymers based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are of interest for large aperture space-based telescopes. Dimensional adjustments of adaptive polymer films depend on charge deposition and require a detailed understanding of the piezoelectric material responses which are expected to deteriorate owing to strong vacuum UV, -, X-ray, energetic particles and atomic oxygen exposure. We have investigated the degradation of PVDF and its copolymers under various stress environments detrimental to reliable operation in space. Initial radiation aging studies have shown complex material changes with lowered Curie temperatures, complex material changes with lowered melting points, morphological transformations and significant crosslinking, but little influence on piezoelectric d33 constants. Complex aging processes have also been observed in accelerated temperature environments inducing annealing phenomena and cyclic stresses. The results suggest that poling and chain orientation are negatively affected by radiation and temperature exposure. A framework for dealing with these complex material qualification issues and overall system survivability predictions in low earth orbit conditions has been established. It allows for improved material selection, feedback for manufacturing and processing, material optimization/stabilization strategies and provides guidance on any alternative materials.

Lithium niobate powders from the raw powders of Li2 O5 are directly synthesized by a combustion method with urea fuel. The synthesis parameters (e.g. the calcination temperature, calcination time, and urea-to-(Li2 CO3 + Nb2 O5) quantity ratio) are studied to reveal the optimized synthesis conditions for preparing high-quality lithium niobate powders. In our present work, it is found that a urea-to-(Li2 CO3 + Nb2 O5) ratio close to 3, calcination temperature at 550-600 degrees and reaction time around 2.5h may lead to high-quality lithium niobate powsers. The microstructure of synthesized powders is further studied; a possible mechanism of the involved reactions is also proposed.

The design and construction of four experimental channels at Grassholme reservoir in Teesdale, County Durham (UK) are briefly described. The problem of obtaining valid replication between channels is examined using published data obtained for previous experiments in the channels. It is concluded that replication may be obtained by careful experimental design. The limitations of the existing configuration of pipework and channel design are discussed and solutions suggested. Finally a list of the main components of the channels and suppliers is appended. Alternative materials and suppliers could well be found for most items. (PDF contains 23 pages)
