Silicon carbide ceramics are very interesting materials to engineering applications because of their properties. These ceramics are produced by liquid phase sintering (LPS), where elevated temperature and time are necessary, and generally form volatile products that promote defects and damage their mechanical properties. In this work was studied the infiltration process to produce SiC ceramics, using shorter time and temperature than LPS, thereby reducing the undesirable chemical reactions. SiC powder was pressed at 300 MPa and pre-sintered at 1550 degrees C for 30 min. Unidirectional and spontaneous infiltration of this preform by Al2O3/Y2O3 liquid was done at 1850 degrees C for 5, 10, 30 and 60 min. The kinetics of infiltration was studied, and the infiltration equilibrium happened when the liquid infiltrated 12 mm into perform. The microstructures show grains of the SiC surrounded by infiltrated additives. The hardness and fracture toughness are similar to conventional SiC ceramics obtained by LPS. The catalytic activities of Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts prepared using different nickel precursor compounds were studied for the reaction of methane reforming with CO2. It is found that the nickel precursor employed in the catalyst preparation plays an important role. The catalyst based on nickel nitrate exhibited higher catalytic activity and stability over a 24-h test period than the other two catalysts derived from nickel chloride and nickel acetylacetonate. A comprehensive characterisation of the catalysts showed that the weak interaction between Ni particles and gamma-Al2O3 resulted in more active sites on Ni nitrate-derived Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. Coking studies showed that carbon deposition on Ni catalysts derived from inorganic precursors (nitrate and chloride) were more severe than on the organic precursor-derived catalyst. However, the Ni nitrate-derived catalyst was found to have the highest stability (or lowest deactivation rate) mainly due to the active carbon species (-C-C-) of the resulting graphitic structure and their close contact with the metal particles. In contrast, the carbon formed on Ni-AA catalyst (from Ni acetylacetonate) is dominated by inactive -CO-C- species, thus leading to a rapid accumulation of carbon in this catalyst and more severe deactivation. Carbon formation on Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts and its kinetics during methane reforming with carbon dioxide was studied in the temperature range of 500-700 degrees C using a thermogravimetric analysis technique. The activation energies of methane cracking, carbon gasification in CO2, as well as carbon deposition in CO2-CH4 reforming were obtained. The results show that the activation energy for carbon gasification is larger than that of carbon formation in methane cracking and that the activation energy of coking in CO2-CH4 reforming is also larger than that of methane decomposition to carbon. The dependencies of coking rate on partial pressures of CH4 and CO2 indicate that methane decomposition is the main route for carbon deposition. A mechanism and kinetic model for carbon deposition is proposed.

Ni catalysts supported on gamma-Al2O3, CeO2 and CeO2-A1(2)O(3) systems were tested for catalytic CO2 reforming of methane into synthesis gas. Ni/CeO2-Al2O3 catalysts showed much better catalytic performance than either CeO2- or gamma-Al2O3-supported Ni catalysts. CeO2 as a support for Ni catalysts produced a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), which reduced the catalytic activity and carbon deposition. However, CeO2 had positive effect on catalytic activity, stability, and carbon suppression when used as a promoter in Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts for this reaction. A weight loading of 1-5 wt% CeO2 was found to be the optimum. Ni catalysts with CeO2 promoters reduced the chemical interaction between nickel and support, resulting in an increase in reducibility and stronger dispersion of nickel. The stability and less coking on CeO2-promoted catalysts are attributed to the oxidative properties of CeO2. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Carbon dioxide reforming of methane into syngas over Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts was systematically studied. Effects of reaction parameters on catalytic activity and carbon deposition over Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts were investigated. It is found that reduced NiA1204, metal nickel, and active species of carbon deposited were the active sites for this reaction. Carbon deposition on Ni/gamma Al2O3 varied depending on the nickel loading and reaction temperature and is the major cause of catalyst deactivation. Higher nickel loading produced more coke on the catalysts, resulting in rapid deactivation and plugging of the reactor. At 5 wt % Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited high activity and much lesser magnitude of deactivation in 140 h. Characterization of carbon deposits on the catalyst surface revealed that there are two kinds of carbon species (oxidized and -C-C-) formed during the reaction and they showed different reactivities toward hydrogenation and oxidation. Kinetic studies showed that the activation energy for CO production in this reaction amounted to 80 kJ/mol and the rate of CO production could be described by a Langmuir-Hinshelwood model.

The effect of alumina on the liquidus temperatures of fayalite slags at iron saturation has been investigated experimentally. Equilibrated synthetic slags were quenched, and the samples were subsequently examined using optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The isotherms in the fayalite primary field and boundary lines were determined, and the results were presented in the form of pseudo-ternary phase diagrams of FeO-CaO-SiO2 with 0, 2, 4, and 6 wt pet Al2O3 in the slag. The experimental results show that the alumina addition expands the fayalite primary phase field and decreases the liquidus temperatures in the fayalite primary phase field.

Catalytic reforming of methane with carbon dioxide was studied in a fixed-bed reactor using unpromoted and promoted Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts. The effects of promoters, such as alkali metal oxide (Na2O), alkaline-earth metal oxides (MgO, CaO) and rare-earth metal oxides (La2O3, CeO2), on the catalytic activity and stability in terms of coking resistance and coke reactivity were systematically examined. CaO-, La2O3- and CeO2-promoted Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts exhibited higher stability whereas MgO- and Na2O-promoted catalysts demonstrated lower activity and significant deactivation. Metal-oxide promoters (Na2O, MgO, La2O3, and CeO2) suppressed the carbon deposition, primarily due to the enhanced basicities of the supports and highly reactive carbon species formed during the reaction. In contrast, CaO increased the carbon deposition; however, it promoted the carbon reactivity. (C) 2000 Society of Chemical Industry.

Alcohols and acids can be switched to produce ethers or esters by varying the alcohol to catalyst mol ratio, in a new etherification and esterification method using NbCl5/Al2O3 catalyst under ""solvent free"" conditions and promoted by MW (microwave) irradiation. A ""two sites"" mechanism for the reaction is proposed, in an attempt to clarify the tendency of the catalyst to be dependent on the alcohol alone during the esterification process. A model has been developed which enables the viscosities of coal ash slags to be predicted as a function of composition and temperature under reducing conditions. The model describes both completely liquid and heterogeneous, i.e. partly crystallised, slags in the Al2O3-CaO-'FeO'-SiO2 system in equilibrium with metallic iron. The Urbain formalism has been modified to describe the viscosities of the liquid slag phase over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. The computer package F * A * C * T was used to predict the proportions of solids and the compositions of the remaining liquid phases. The Roscoe equation has been used to describe the effect of presence of solid suspension (slurry effect) on the viscosity of partly crystallised slag systems. The model provides a good description of the experimental data of fully liquid, and liquid + solids mixtures, over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. This model can now be used for viscosity predictions in industrial slag systems. Examples of the application of the new model to coal ash fluxing and blending are given in the paper. Phase-equilibrium data and the liquidus for the system. "MnO"-CaO-(Al2O3-SiO2) at a manganese-rich alloy saturation have been determined in the temperature range from 1423 to 1723 K. The results are presented in the form of a pseudoternary section "MnO"-CaO-(Al2O3 + SiO2) with an Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.41. The following primary phases are present in the range of conditions investigated:, 3Al(2)O(3).2SiO(2); SiO2; MnO.Al2O3-2SiO(2); (Mn,Ca)O.SiO2; 2(Mn,Ca)O.SiO2; MnO.Al2O3; (Mn,Ca)O; alpha-2CaO.SiO2; alpha'-2CaO.SiO2; 2CaO.Al2O3.SiO2; CaO.SiO2, and CaO.Al2O3.2SiO(2). The presence of alumina in this system is shown to have a significant effect on the liquidus compared to the system "MnO"-CaO-SiO2, leading to, the stabilization of the anorthite and gehlenite phases.

In this work we report on the structure and magnetic and electrical transport properties of CrO2 films deposited onto (0001) sapphire by atmospheric pressure (AP)CVD from a CrO3 precursor. Films are grown within a broad range of deposition temperatures, from 320 to 410 degrees C, and oxygen carrier gas flow rates of 50-500 seem, showing that it is viable to grow highly oriented a-axis CrO2 films at temperatures as low as 330 degrees C i.e., 60-70 degrees C lower than is reported in published data for the same chemical system. Depending on the experimental conditions, growth kinetic regimes dominated either by surface reaction or by mass-transport mechanisms are identified. The growth of a Cr2O3 interfacial layer as an intrinsic feature of the deposition process is studied and discussed. Films synthesized at 330 degrees C keep the same high quality magnetic and transport properties as those deposited at higher temperatures.
