We use a difference-in-difference estimator to examine the effects of a merger involving three airlines. The novelty lies in the examination of this operation in two distinct scenarios: (1) on routes where two low-cost carriers and (2) on routes where a network and one of the low-cost airlines had previously been competing. We report a reduction in frequencies but no substantial effect on prices in the first scenario, while in the second we report an increase in prices but no substantial effect on frequencies. These results may be attributed to the differences in passenger types flying on these routes.

An examination of the impact in the US and EU markets of two major innovations in the provision of air services on thin routes - regional jet technology and the low-cost business model - reveals significant differences. In the US, regional airlines monopolize a high proportion of thin routes, whereas low-cost carriers are dominant on these routes in Europe. Our results have different implications for business and leisure travelers, given that regional services provide a higher frequency of flights (at the expense of higher fares), while low-cost services offer lower fares (at the expense of lower flight frequencies). O presente trabalho consiste em mostrar a importância da Análise Económica e Financeira como uma ferramenta de apoio eficiente e eficaz na tomada de decisões das empresas. No contexto atual onde a concorrência é cada vez mais forte e a busca pela competitividade é uma necessidade constante, as empresas necessitam de informações precisas e oportunas para apoiar a sua decisão. A escassez de recursos financeiros e o elevado custo dos mesmos aliado à falta de planeamento e controlo, têm contribuído para que muitas empresas encerrem suas atividades. A tomada de boas decisões torna-se, então, um fator crucial para assegurar a sobrevivência, crescimento e permanência da empresa no mercado.Neste sentido, buscamos trazer alguns conceitos e técnicas fundamentais de análise e medição do desempenho económica e financeira das empresas que será igualmente útil para aprimorar os conhecimentos nesta temática, quer a nível académica, como também a nível profissional. Procuramos a i n d a evidenciar a importância de se conhecer os indicadores que podem ser vistos como alertas de possíveis falências de empresas e com base nisso, tomar decisões que determinam as estratégias a utilizar para enfrentar a concorrência. Para concluir este trabalho, procedemos a um Estudo de Caso que engloba uma análise económica e financeira, baseada na análise das Demonstrações Financeiras e demais informações complementares da TRANSPORTADORA AÉREA DE CABO VERDE (TACV). Diante dos problemas, sugerimos formas de mudanças e de viabilidade dos mesmos. Esperamos, então, que este trabalho contribua para que a empresa possa analisar melhor a forma de administrar a parte económica e financeira e demais sectores.

This paper estimates a frequency equation to explain the determinants of network airline service levels at their hub airports. Drawing on European data for 2002 - 2013, we find that network airlines reduce frequencies when the share of low - cost airlines increases both on the route and at the hub airport. On the contrary, frequency choices of network airlines are not affected by competition from low - cost airlines operating in nearby secondary airports. We also find some evidence that mergers in Europe may result in a re - organization of the route structure in favor of the hubs of the larger airline.

Lovell and Rouse (LR) have recently proposed a modification of the standard DEA model that overcomes the infeasibility problem often encountered in computing super-efficiency. In the LR procedure one appropriately scales up the observed input vector (scale down the output vector) of the relevant super-efficient firm thereby usually creating its inefficient surrogate. An alternative procedure proposed in this paper uses the directional distance function introduced by Chambers, Chung, and Färe and the resulting Nerlove-Luenberger (NL) measure of super-efficiency. The fact that the directional distance function combines features of both an input-oriented and an output-oriented model, generally leads to a more complete ranking of the observations than either of the oriented models. An added advantage of this approach is that the NL super-efficiency measure is unique and does not depend on any arbitrary choice of a scaling parameter. A data set on international airlines from Coelli, Perelman, and Griffel-Tatje (2002) is utilized in an illustrative empirical application.

SSome factors including the deregulation in the U.S and the liberalization in Europe of the airline industry are essential to understanding why the number of partnership agreements between airlines has increased during the last 25 years. These events, coupled with the continuous economic downturn and the 9/11 catastrophe seem to be the perfect framework for the tendency to develop airline strategic alliances. However, it has been observed that this trend was not followed during the period 2005-2008. The purpose of this paper is to analyze if a benefit was experienced by the major airlines who became a member of the current 3 big alliances compared to the major airlines that decided not to become a member or were not admitted into the alliances during 2005-2008. The methodology of this report includes an analysis of several airlines’ performance figures. These performance figures include the revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs), the passenger load factor (PLF) and also the market share (MS). The figures will be compared between the aligned airlines and others which have similar business models. The value of this paper is to reveal whether being aligned provides advantages to major airlines under a bearish airline market in a globalized environment.

Core competencies form the basis of an organization’s skills and the basic element of a successful strategic execution. Identifying and strengthening the core competencies enhances flexibility thereby strategically positioning a firm for responding to competition in the dynamic marketplace and can be the difference in quality among firms that follow the same business model. A correct understanding of the concept of business models, employing the right core competencies, organizing them effectively and building the business model around the competencies that are constantly gained and assimilated can result in enhanced business performance and thus having implications for firms that want to innovate their business models. Flexibility can be the firm’s agility to shift focus in response to external factors such as changing markets, new technologies or competition and a firm’s success can be gauged by the ability it displays in this transition. Although industry transformations generally emanate from technological changes, recent examples suggests they may also be due to the introduction of new business models and nowhere is it more relevant than in the airline industry. An analysis of the business model flexibility of 17 Airlines from Asia, Europe and Oceania, that is done with core competence as the indicator reveals a picture of inconsistencies in the core competence strategy of certain airlines and the corresponding reduction in business performance. The performance variations are explained from a service oriented core competence strategy employed by airlines that ultimately enables them in having a flexible business model that not only increases business performance but also helps in reducing the uncertainties in the internal and external operating environments. This is more relevant in the case of airline industry, as the product (the air transportation of passengers) minus the service competence is all the same.
