The acquisition and extinction of affective valence to neutral geometrical shape conditional stimuli was investigated in three experiments. Experiment 1 employed a differential conditioning procedure with aversive shock USs. Differential electrodermal responding was evident during acquisition and lost during extinction. As indexed by verbal ratings, the CS1 acquired negative valence during acquisition,which was reduced after extinction. Affective priming, a reaction time based demand free measure of stimulus valence, failed to provide evidence for affective learning. Experiment 2 employed pictures of happy and angry faces as USs.Valence ratings after acquisitionweremore positive for theCS paired with happy faces (CS-H) and less positive for the CS paired with angry faces (CS-A) than during baseline. Extinction training reduced the extent of acquired valence significantly for both CSs, however, ratings of the CS-A remained different from baseline. Affective priming confirmed these results yielding differences between CS-A and CS-H after acquisition for pleasant and unpleasant targets, but for pleasant targets only after extinction. Experiment 3 replicated the design of Experiment 2, but presented the US pictures backwardly masked. Neither rating nor affective priming measures yielded any evidence for affective learning. The present results confirm across two different experimental procedures that, contrary to predictions from dual process accounts of human learning, affective learning is subject to extinction.

Previous research has demonstrated covariation of physiological responding with judgments of valence and arousal. However, until now links between these affective dimensions and respiratory measures have not been extensively investigated. In this study, eight picture series of different affective valence and arousal level were shown to 30 subjects, while respiration, skin conductance level (SCL), heart rate (HR) and affective judgments were measured. With increasing pleasantness, inspiratory time lengthened, mean inspiratory flow decreased and thoracic breathing increased. With increasing arousal, inspiratory time and total breath duration shortened and mean inspiratory flow, minute ventilation, thoracic breathing and electrodermal activity increased. These findings confirm the importance of arousal in respiratory responding, but also indicate a modulatory role of affective valence.We propose that the arousal effects reflect energy mobilization in preparation to act, and thatthe valence effects might be a manifestation of an attention bias toward negative stimuli. Research suggests that respiratory patterns may reflect general dimensions of emotional response. In this study, we investigated the relationships between judgments of affective valence (pleasantness) and arousal and respiratory responses to acoustic stimuli. Sixteen environmental noises and 16 musical fragments of 30 s duration were presented to 31 participants, while respiration, skin conductance level and heart rate were recorded. Judgments of valence and arousal were registered using the 9-point Self-Assessment Manikin. For noises, breathing accelerated and minute ventilation augmented with decreases in pleasantness for low-arousal stimuli and with increases in arousal for positive stimuli. For music, breathing accelerated and minute ventilation augmented with increases both in rated valence and arousal. Skin conductance level increased with arousal ratings for music but not for noises, whereas mean heart rate increased with rated arousal for noises but not for music. Although both noises and music are sound-vibrations, differences in the relationships between affective judgments and physiological responses were found suggesting differences in the processing of the two types of acoustic stimuli. Stereotypies are abnormal repetitive behaviour patterns that are highly prevalent in laboratory mice and are thought to reflect impaired welfare. Thus, they are associated with impaired behavioural inhibition and may also reflect negative affective states. However, in mice the relationship between stereotypies and behavioural inhibition is inconclusive, and reliable measures of affective valence are lacking. Here we used an exploration based task to assess cognitive bias as a measure of affective valence and a two-choice guessing task to assess recurrent perseveration as a measure of impaired behavioural inhibition to test mice with different forms and expression levels of stereotypic behaviour. We trained 44 CD- 1 and 40 C57BL/6 female mice to discriminate between positively and negatively cued arms in a radial maze and tested their responses to previously inaccessible ambiguous arms. In CD-1 mice (i) mice with higher stereotypy levels displayed a negative cognitive bias and this was influenced by the form of stereotypy performed, (ii) negative cognitive bias was evident in back-flipping mice, and (iii) no such effect was found in mice displaying bar-mouthing or cage-top twirling. In C57BL/6 mice neither route-tracing nor bar-mouthing was associated with cognitive bias, indicating that in this strain these stereotypies may not reflect negative affective states. Conversely, while we found no relation of stereotypy to recurrent perseveration in CD-1 mice, C57BL/6 mice with higher levels of route-tracing, but not bar-mouthing made more repetitive responses in the guessing task. Our findings confirm previous research indicating that the implications of stereotypies for animal welfare may strongly depend on the species and strain of animal as well as on the form and expression level of the stereotypy. Furthermore, they indicate that variation in stereotypic behaviour may represent an important source of variation in many animal experiments.

Objectives - A highly adaptive aspect of human memory is the enhancement of explicit, consciously accessible memory by emotional stimuli. We studied the performance of Alzheimer`s disease (AD) patients and elderly controls using a memory battery with emotional content, and we correlated these results with the amygdala and hippocampus volume. Methods - Twenty controls and 20 early AD patients were subjected to the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) and to magnetic resonance imaging-based volumetric measurements of the medial temporal lobe structures. Results - The results show that excluding control group subjects with 5 or more years of schooling, both groups showed improvement with pleasant or unpleasant figures for the IAPS in an immediate free recall test. Likewise, in a delayed free recall test, both the controls and the AD group showed improvement for pleasant pictures, when education factor was not controlled. The AD group showed improvement in the immediate and delayed free recall test proportional to the medial temporal lobe structures, with no significant clinical correlation between affective valence and amygdala volume. Conclusion - AD patients can correctly identify emotions, at least at this early stage, but this does not improve their memory performance.

The aim of this study was to identify the psycho-musical factors that govern time evaluation in Western music from baroque, classic, romantic, and modern repertoires. The excerpts were previously found to represent variability in musical properties and to induce four main categories of emotions. 48 participants (musicians and nonmusicians) freely listened to 16 musical excerpts (lasting 20 sec. each) and grouped those that seemed to have the same duration. Then, participants associated each group of excerpts to one of a set of sine wave tones varying in duration from 16 to 24 sec. Multidimensional scaling analysis generated a two-dimensional solution for these time judgments. Musical excerpts with high arousal produced an overestimation of time, and affective valence had little influence on time perception. The duration was also overestimated when tempo and loudness were higher, and to a lesser extent, timbre density. In contrast, musical tension had little influence.

Social information processing (SIP; Crick & Dodge, 1994) and social-cognitive learning theories have been often used to understand children’s problem behaviors, such as aggression. According to these theories, children’s thinking guides their subsequent behaviors. Although most of us agree that social behavior and underlying thought processes are context-dependent, personality and social development researchers have usually engaged in searching for stable patterns of dispositions and behaviors, ignoring (or treating as error) the variance across different situations and relationship types. This, however, can result in erroneous conclusions and question the interpretation of previous findings. Four studies were conducted to explore the influence of relationship context on children’s social-cognitive evaluations and behavior. Samples were fourth to sixth graders from Estonia and Finland. Social cognitions were assessed by presenting children with hypothetical vignettes where the previously identified relationship partner’s behavior had a negative consequence for the child (Studies I, II, and IV), followed by questions measuring different social-cognitive processes (e.g., hostile attributions, behavioral strategies, outcome expectations and self-efficacy beliefs for aggression). In addition, in Studies II and IV, children provided information about their behavior within a specific relationship context. In Study III, an affective priming paradigm was employed where participants were presented with a short display of photographs of children’s liked and disliked classmates, and unknown peers. The results of this thesis suggest that children’s thinking and behavior are largely influenced by the affective valence of the relationship. Moreover, cognitions guide behavior within the relationship. The current findings offer a fruitful avenue for studying the heterogeneity of peer interactions.

The combined influence of tempo and mode on emotional responses to music was studied by crossing 7 changes in mode with 3 changes in tempo. Twenty-four musicians aged 19 to 25 years (12 males and 12 females) and 24 nonmusicians aged 17 to 25 years (12 males and 12 females) were required to perform two tasks: 1) listening to different musical excerpts, and 2) associating an emotion to them such as happiness, serenity, fear, anger, or sadness. ANOVA showed that increasing the tempo strongly affected the arousal (F(2,116) = 268.62, mean square error (MSE) = 0.6676, P < 0.001) and, to a lesser extent, the valence of emotional responses (F(6,348) = 8.71, MSE = 0.6196, P < 0.001). Changes in modes modulated the affective valence of the perceived emotions (F(6,348) = 4.24, MSE = 0.6764, P < 0.001). Some interactive effects were found between tempo and mode (F (1,58) = 115.6, MSE = 0.6428, P < 0.001), but, in most cases, the two parameters had additive effects. This finding demonstrates that small changes in the pitch structures of modes modulate the emotions associated with the pieces, confirming the cognitive foundation of emotional responses to music.

La schizophrénie est une psychopathologie largement hétérogène caractérisée entre autres par d’importantes défaillances dans le fonctionnement cognitif et émotionnel. En effet, par rapport à la population générale, forte proportion de ces individus présentent une mémoire déficitaire pour les événements émotionnels. À ce jour, le peu d’études qui se sont penchées sur la mémoire émotionnelle épisodique dans la schizophrénie, ont uniquement mis l’emphase sur l'effet de la valence des stimuli (c’est-à-dire le caractère agréable ou désagréable du stimulus). Toutefois, aucune n’a investigué spécifiquement l’intensité de la réaction aux stimuli (c’est-à-dire une faible par rapport à une forte réaction) malgré quantité de preuves faisant montre, dans la population générale, de différents processus de mémoire émotionnelle pour des stimuli suscitant une forte réaction par rapport à ceux évoquant une faible réponse. Ce manque est d’autant plus flagrant étant donné le nombre d’études ayant rapporté un traitement et un encodage atypiques des émotions spécifiquement au niveau de l’intensité de la réponse subjective chez des patients atteints de schizophrénie. Autre fait important, il est étonnant de constater l’absence de recherches sur les différences de sexe dans la mémoire émotionnelle étant donné l’ensemble des divergences entre hommes et femmes atteints de schizophrénie au niveau de la prévalence, de l’âge de diagnostic, de la manifestation clinique, de l’évolution de la maladie, de la réponse au traitement et des structures cérébrales. Pour pallier à ces lacunes, ce mémoire a évalué : (1) l’effet de la valence des stimuli et de l'intensité de la réaction émotionnelle au niveau des fonctions cérébrales correspondant à la mémoire émotionnelle chez des patients atteints de schizophrénie comparativement à des participants sains; et (2) les possibles différences de sexe dans les processus cérébraux impliqués dans la mémoire émotionnelle chez des patients atteints de schizophrénie par rapport à des volontaires sains. Ainsi, la première étude a comparé les activations cérébrales de patients atteints de schizophrénie par rapport à des participants sains au cours d’une tâche de mémoire émotionnelle dont les stimuli variaient à la fois au niveau de la valence et de l'intensité de la réaction subjective. 37 patients atteints de schizophrénie ainsi que 37 participants en bonne santé ont effectué cette tâche de mémoire émotionnelle lors d’une session d’imagerie par résonance magnétique fonctionnelle (IRMf). Pour toutes les conditions étudiées (images négatives, positives, de faible et de forte intensité), le groupe atteint de schizophrénie a performé significativement moins bien que les volontaires sains. Comparativement aux sujets sains, ils ont montré moins d’activations cérébrales dans les régions limbiques et préfrontales lors de la reconnaissance des images négatives, mais ont présenté un patron d'activations similaire à celui des participants sains lors de la reconnaissance des images chargées positivement (activations observées dans le cervelet, le cortex temporal et préfrontal). Enfin, indépendamment de la valence des stimuli, les deux groupes ont démontré une augmentation des activations cérébrales pour les images de forte intensité par rapport à celles de plus faible intensité. La seconde étude a quant à elle exploré les différences de sexe potentielles au niveau des activations cérébrales associées à la mémoire émotionnelle dans la schizophrénie et dans la population en général. Nous avons comparé 41 patients atteints de schizophrénie (20 femmes) à 41 participants en bonne santé (19 femmes) alors qu’ils effectuaient la même tâche de mémoire émotionnelle mentionnée plus haut. Or, pour cette étude, nous nous sommes concentrés sur les conditions suivantes : la reconnaissance d’images positives, négatives et neutres. Nous n'avons pas observé de différences entre les hommes et les femmes au niveau des performances à la tâche de mémoire pour aucune des conditions. En ce qui a trait aux données de neuroimagerie, comparativement aux femmes en bonne santé, celles atteintes de schizophrénie ont montré une diminution des activations cérébrales dans les régions corticales du système limbique (p. ex. cortex cingulaire moyen) et dans les régions sous-corticales (p. ex. amygdale) lors de la reconnaissance d'images négatives. Pour ce qui est de la condition positive, elles ont présenté, comparativement au groupe de femmes saines, des diminutions d’activations spécifiquement dans le cervelet ainsi que dans le gyrus frontal inférieur et moyen. Les hommes atteints de schizophrénie, eux, ont montré une augmentation d’activations par rapport aux hommes sains dans le gyrus préfrontal médian lors de la reconnaissance des stimuli négatifs ; ainsi que dans les régions pariétales, temporales et limbiques lors de la reconnaissance des stimuli positifs. Dans un autre ordre d’idées, notre analyse corrélationnelle a mis en évidence, chez les femmes, un lien significatif entre l’activité cérébrale et les symptômes au cours de la mémoire des stimuli positifs, alors que chez les hommes atteints schizophrénie, ce lien a été observé au cours de la mémoire des stimuli négatifs. Bref, l’ensemble de nos résultats suggère, chez les patients atteints de schizophrénie, un fonctionnement cérébral atypique spécifiquement lors de la reconnaissance d’images négatives, mais un fonctionnement intact lors de la reconnaissance de stimuli positifs. De plus, nous avons mis en évidence la présence de différences de sexe dans les activations cérébrales associées à la mémoire épisodique émotionnelle soulignant ainsi l'importance d’étudier séparément les hommes et les femmes atteints de schizophrénie dans le cadre de recherches sur les plans cognitif et émotionnel.

L’expression faciale de la douleur occupe un rôle central dans la communication de la douleur et dans l’estimation de l’intensité de la douleur vécue par autrui. Les propriétés du visage d’une personne en souffrance ont été investiguées principalement à l’aide de méthodes descriptives (e.g. FACS). L’introduction fait le point sur les connaissances de l’expression faciale de douleur et de la communication de cette expérience sur les plans comportemental et cérébral et souligne que les mécanismes et stratégies visuels utilisés par l’observateur pour parvenir à détecter la douleur dans le visage d’autrui demeurent très peu connus. L’étude des processus impliqués dans la reconnaissance de l’expression de la douleur est essentielle pour comprendre la communication de la douleur et éventuellement expliquer des phénomènes ayant des impacts cliniques considérables, tel que l’effet classique de sous-estimation de la douleur d’autrui. L’article 1 vise à établir à l’aide d’une méthode directe (Bubbles) les informations visuelles utilisées efficacement par l’observateur lorsqu’il doit catégoriser la douleur parmi les émotions de base. Les résultats montrent que parmi l’ensemble des caractéristiques du visage typique de la douleur, peu d’informations sont vraiment efficaces pour parvenir à cette discrimination et que celles qui le sont encodent la partie affective- motivationnelle de l’expérience d’autrui. L’article 2 investigue le pouvoir de ces régions privilégiées du visage de la douleur dans la modulation d’une expérience nociceptive chez l’observateur afin de mieux comprendre les mécanismes impliqués dans une telle modulation. En effet, s’il est connu que des stimuli ayant une valence émotionnelle négative, y compris des expressions faciales de douleur, peuvent augmenter les réponses spinales (réflexes) et supra-spinales (ex.: perceptives) de la douleur, l’information visuelle suffisante pour permettre l’activation des voies modulatrices demeure inconnue. Les résultats montrent qu’en voyant les régions diagnostiques pour la reconnaissance de l’expression faciale de douleur, la douleur perçue par l’observateur suite à une stimulation nociceptive est plus grande que lorsqu’il voit les régions les moins corrélées avec une bonne reconnaissance de la douleur. L’exploration post-expérimentale des caractéristiques de nos stimuli suggère que cette modulation n’est pas explicable par l’induction d’un état émotionnel négatif, appuyant ainsi un rôle prépondérant de la communication de la douleur dans la modulation vicariante de l’expérience douloureuse de l’observateur. Les mesures spinales ne sont toutefois pas modulées par ces manipulations et suggèrent ainsi que ce ne sont pas des voies cérébro-spinale qui sont impliquées dans ce phénomène.

Higher levels of well-being are associated with longer life expectancies and better physical health. Previous studies suggest that processes involving the self and autobiographical memory are related to well-being, yet these relationships are poorly understood. The present study tested 32 older and 32 younger adults using scales measuring well-being and the affective valence of two types of autobiographical memory: episodic autobiographical memories and semantic self-images. Results showed that valence of semantic self-images, but not episodic autobiographical memories, was highly correlated with well-being,particularly in older adults. In contrast, well-being in older adults was unrelated to performance across a range of standardised memory tasks. These results highlight the role of semantic self-images in well-being, and have implications for the development of therapeutic interventions for well-being in aging.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pre--task music on swimming performance and other psychological variables. A randomized counterbalanced within--subjects (experimental and control condition) design was employed. Eighteen regional level male swimmers performed two 200m freestyle swimming time trials. Participants were exposed to either 5min of self--selected music (pre--task music condition) or 5min of silence (control condition) and, after 1 minute, performed the swimming task. Swimming time was significantly shorter (--1.44%) in the pre--task music condition. Listening to pre--task music increased motivation to perform the swimming task, while arousal remained unchanged. While fatigue increased after the swimming task in both conditions, vigour, ratings of perceived exertion and affective valence were unaltered. It is concluded, for the first time, that pre--task music improves swimming performance.

Lesions to the primary geniculo-striate visual pathway cause blindness in the contralesional visual field. Nevertheless, previous studies have suggested that patients with visual field defects may still be able to implicitly process the affective valence of unseen emotional stimuli (affective blindsight) through alternative visual pathways bypassing the striate cortex. These alternative pathways may also allow exploitation of multisensory (audio-visual) integration mechanisms, such that auditory stimulation can enhance visual detection of stimuli which would otherwise be undetected when presented alone (crossmodal blindsight). The present dissertation investigated implicit emotional processing and multisensory integration when conscious visual processing is prevented by real or virtual lesions to the geniculo-striate pathway, in order to further clarify both the nature of these residual processes and the functional aspects of the underlying neural pathways. The present experimental evidence demonstrates that alternative subcortical visual pathways allow implicit processing of the emotional content of facial expressions in the absence of cortical processing. However, this residual ability is limited to fearful expressions. This finding suggests the existence of a subcortical system specialised in detecting danger signals based on coarse visual cues, therefore allowing the early recruitment of flight-or-fight behavioural responses even before conscious and detailed recognition of potential threats can take place. Moreover, the present dissertation extends the knowledge about crossmodal blindsight phenomena by showing that, unlike with visual detection, sound cannot crossmodally enhance visual orientation discrimination in the absence of functional striate cortex. This finding demonstrates, on the one hand, that the striate cortex plays a causative role in crossmodally enhancing visual orientation sensitivity and, on the other hand, that subcortical visual pathways bypassing the striate cortex, despite affording audio-visual integration processes leading to the improvement of simple visual abilities such as detection, cannot mediate multisensory enhancement of more complex visual functions, such as orientation discrimination.

Investigated the interaction between induced mood states and selective learning among 28 college students. Ss were asked to behave as if they were happy or depressed while learning a list of words with neutral, positive, and negative affective valence. Results document the mood congruity effect. This effect was stronger among Ss who predicted the relationship between mood and word valence than among Ss who were unaware of this relationship.

Themood-congruity effect refers to facilitated processing of information when the affective valence of this information is congruent with the subject’s mood. In this paper we argue that mood may be a sufficient but not a necessary condition to produce the mood-congruity effect of selective learning. Two experiments are presented in which subjects learned lists of words with neutral, positive, and negative affective valences. In the learning task the subjects were instructed to behave as if they were depressed or happy. The mood-congruity effect was indeed obtained. The effect was stronger with subjects who “predicted” the relationship between mood and affective word valence than with subjects who were unaware of this relationship. The results are not simply attributed to task demands, but are interpreted in terms of a model of cognitive processes and people’s knowledge about mood states.
