Wind energy has emerged as a major sustainable source of energy. The efficiency of wind power generation by wind mills has improved a lot during the last three decades. There is still further scope for maximising the conversion of wind energy into mechanical energy. In this context, the wind turbine rotor dynamics has great significance. The present work aims at a comprehensive study of the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) aerodynamics by numerically solving the fluid dynamic equations with the help of a finite-volume Navier-Stokes CFD solver. As a more general goal, the study aims at providing the capabilities of modern numerical techniques for the complex fluid dynamic problems of HAWT.The main purpose is hence to maximize the physics of power extraction by wind turbines. This research demonstrates the potential of an incompressible Navier-Stokes CFD method for the aerodynamic power performance analysis of horizontal axis wind turbine. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory USA-NREL (Technical Report NREL/Cp-500-28589) had carried out an experimental work aimed at the real time performance prediction of horizontal axis wind turbine. In addition to a comparison between the results reported by NREL made and CFD simulations, comparisons are made for the local flow angle at several stations ahead of the wind turbine blades. The comparison has shown that fairly good predictions can be made for pressure distribution and torque.Subsequently, the wind-field effects on the blade aerodynamics,as well as the blade/tower interaction, were investigated. The selected case corresponded to a 12.5 m/s up-wind HAWT at zero degree of yaw angle and a rotational speed of 25 rpm.The results obtained suggest that the present can cope well with the flows encountered around wind turbines. The areodynamic performance of the turbine and the flow details near and off the turbine blades and tower can be analysed using theses results. The aerodynamic performance of airfoils differs from one another. The performance mainly depends on co-efficient of performnace,co-efficient of lift,co-efficient of drag, velocity of fluid and angle of attack. This study shows that the velocity is not constant for all angles of attack of different airfoils. The performance parameters are calculated analytically and are compared with the standardized performance tests. For different angles of ,the velocity stall is determined for the better performance of a system with respect to velocity. The research addresses the effect of surface roughness factor on the blade surface at various sections. The numerical results were found to be in agreement with the experimental data.A relative advantage of the theoretical aerofoil design method is that it allows many different concepts to be explored economically.Such efforts are generally impractical in wind tunnels because of time and money constraints. Thus, the need for a theoretical aerofoil design method is threefold:first for the design of aerofoil that fall outside the range of applicability of existing calalogs:second, for the design of aerofoil that more exactly match the requirements of the intended application:and third, for the economic exploration of many aerofoil concepts. From the results obtained for the different aerofoils, the velocity is not constant for all angles of attack. The results obtained for the aerofoil mainly depend on angle of attack and velocity. The vortex generator technique was meticulously studies with the formulation of the specification for the right angle shaped vortex generators-VG.The results were validated in accordance with the primary analysis phase. The results were found to be in good agreement with the power curve. The introduction of correct size VGs at appropriate locations over the blades of the selected HAWT was found to increase the power generation by about 4%

A 2D steady model for the annular two-phase flow of water and steam in the steam-generating boiler pipes of a liquid metal fast breeder reactor is proposed The model is based on thin-layer lubrication theory and thin aerofoil theory. The exchange of mass between the vapour core and the liquid film due to evaporation of the liquid film is accounted for using some simple thermodynamics models, and the resultant change of phase is modelled by proposing a suitable Stefan problem Appropriate boundary conditions for the now are discussed The resulting non-lineal singular integro-differential equation for the shape of the liquid film free surface is solved both asymptotically and numerically (using some regularization techniques) Predictions for the length to the dryout point from the entry of the annular regime are made The influence of both the traction tau provided by the fast-flowing vapour core on the liquid layer and the mass transfer parameter eta on the dryout length is investigated

This article deals with the effect of open trailing edge on the aerodynamic characteristics of laminar aerofoils at low Reynolds numbers, the attention being focussed on the influence of such a trailingedge imperfection on the aerodynamic efficiency. Wind tunnel tests have been performed at different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack, and global aerodynamic as well as pressure distributions were measured (in these tests two types of open trailing edges, either sharp or rounded were considered). From experimental results, a quantitative analysis of the influence of the trailing-edge thickness on the degradation of aerofoil aerodynamic performances has been obtained, which allows the establishment of a criterion for an acceptance limit for this kind of imperfection.

This article deals with the effect of leading edge imperfections on the aerodynamic characteristics of a NACA 632-215 laminar aerofoil at low Reynolds numbers. Wind tunnel tests have been performed at different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack and global aerodynamic loads were measured. To perform these tests, a NACA 632-215 aerofoil was built up in two halves (corresponding to the upper side and to the lower side), the leading edge imperfection here considered being a slight displacement of half aerofoil with respect to the other. From experimental results, a quantitative measure of the influence of the leading edge displacement on the degradation of the aerofoil aerodynamic performances has been obtained. This allows the establishment of a criterion for an acceptance limit for this kind of imperfection

ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to analyze the effects of leading edge imperfections on the aerodynamic characteristics of airfoils at low Reynolds numbers. The leading edge imperfection here considered being a slight displacement of half airfoil with respect to the other. This study has focus on its influence on the airfoil’s aerodynamic lift, drag and on the aerodynamic efficiency of the airfoil, that is, the relationship between the aerodynamic lift and drag. It has also been studied how this fact may alter some other aerodynamic aspects of airfoils, such as stall, angle of attack of maximum lift, angle of maximum efficiency, aerodynamic moment coefficient and aerodynamic center position. These imperfections in the leading edge may appear in some manufacturing processes of certain aerodynamic elements, such as unmanned aircraft wings or wind turbine blades. The study has focused on the analysis of the behavior at low Reynolds numbers due to recent use of low Reynolds numbers airfoils in a wide range of applications, from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to low power wind turbine blades, or even due to their potential use in aircraft designed to fly in low density atmospheres as the one existing in Mars. This phenomenon has not been deeply analyzed in the literature, although several authors have discussed on airfoils at low Reynolds number, with leading edge protuberances or airfoils with ice accretions. Various types of airfoils have been analyzed, laminar and non-laminar, symmetric and curved airfoils, and airfoils with different thickness, in order to compare the degree of influence of the phenomenon studied on each airfoil type and thus, to estimate the degree of sensitivity to the anomaly geometry. The study was carried out experimentally using a test chamber designed specifically for this purpose, as well as an electronic balance to measure the forces and moments on the airfoil, and a pressure scanner to measure distribution of pressures in certain cases. The main purpose of this research is to establish a criteria for quantifying the influence that a slight displacement of half aerofoil with respect to the other has in the degradation of aerodynamics characteristics, aiming at establishing the acceptance limits for these pieces when they are manufactured, according to the type of airfoil used. Based on the results obtained from the analysis of the cases under study it can be concluded that displacements, within the range of study, decreases maximum aerodynamic lift, but the aerodynamic drag increases, and consequently there is a reduction of aerodynamic efficiency. However, in some cases, for small defects opposite effect occurs. The maximum lift increases significantly with little loss of maximum aerodynamic efficiency.

ABSTRACT This research was conducted at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Spain) together with the National Experimental University of Táchira (Venezuela). The study was to design an internal cavity within the airfoil 2415-3s, which was developed in the Czech Technical University (Prague, Czech Republic). A computational study was performed using CFD technique, different models of internal cavities in the profile to select the most appropriate design, manufacturing a prototype 3D; thus achieving validate the computer simulation with experimental data obtained from the tests in the wind tunnel AF6109 of the National Experimental University of Táchira. Visualization techniques were also applied in the wind tunnel, as streamlines smoke and oil films on the airfoil. This procedure corroborated validation of computational simulation. The airfoil selected denominated 2415-3s-TC, whose main characteristic consists of three independent channels each other, housed within the inner cavity, allowing the forced air flow through the cavity, change direction, to lead as more tangentially and, as perpendicular as possible to the step 2415-3s aerofoil. This configuration designed allowed increasing the lift coefficient for higher angles of attack to 8º, and for angles near the critical angle.

This paper describes an implementation of a method capable of integrating parametric, feature based, CAD models based on commercial software (CATIA) with the SU2 software framework. To exploit the adjoint based methods for aerodynamic optimisation within the SU2, a formulation to obtain geometric sensitivities directly from the commercial CAD parameterisation is introduced, enabling the calculation of gradients with respect to CAD based design variables. To assess the accuracy and efficiency of the alternative approach, two aerodynamic optimisation problems are investigated: an inviscid, 3D, problem with multiple constraints, and a 2D high-lift aerofoil, viscous problem without any constraints. Initial results show the new parameterisation obtaining reliable optimums, with similar levels of performance of the software native parameterisations. In the final paper, details of computing CAD sensitivities will be provided, including accuracy as well as linking geometric sensitivities to aerodynamic objective functions and constraints; the impact in the robustness of the overall method will be assessed and alternative parameterisations will be included.
