In microelectronics, the increase in complexity and the reduction of devices dimensions make essential the development of new characterization tools and methodologies. Indeed advanced characterization methods with very high spatial resolution are needed to analyze the redistribution at the nanoscale in devices and interconnections. The atom probe tomography has become an essential analysis to study materials at the nanometer scale. This instrument is the only analytical microscope capable to produce 3D maps of the distribution of the chemical species with an atomic resolution inside a material. This technique has benefit from several instrumental improvements during last years. In particular, the use of laser for the analysis of semiconductors and insulating materials offers new perspectives for characterization. The capability of APT to map out elements at the atomic scale with high sensitivity in devices meets the characterization requirements of semiconductor devices such as the determination of elemental distributions for each device region. In this paper, several examples will show how APT can be used to characterize and understand materials and process for advanced metallization. The possibilities and performances of APT (chemical analysis of all the elements, atomic resolution, planes determination, crystallographic information...) will be described as well as some of its limitations (sample preparation, complex evaporation, detection limit, ...). The examples illustrate different aspect of metallization: dopant profiling and clustering, metallic impurities segregation on dislocation, silicide formation and alloying, high K/metal gate optimization, SiGe quantum dots, as well as analysis of transistors and nanowires. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. In coffee processing the fermentation stage is considered one of the critical operations by its impact on the final quality of the product. However, the level of control of the fermentation process on each farm is often not adequate; the use of sensorics for controlling coffee fermentation is not common. The objective of this work is to characterize the fermentation temperature in a fermentation tank by applying spatial interpolation and a new methodology of data analysis based on phase space diagrams of temperature data, collected by means of multi-distributed, low cost and autonomous wireless sensors. A real coffee fermentation was supervised in the Cauca region (Colombia) with a network of 24 semi-passive TurboTag RFID temperature loggers with vacuum plastic cover, submerged directly in the fermenting mass. Temporal evolution and spatial distribution of temperature is described in terms of the phase diagram areas which characterizes the cyclic behaviour of temperature and highlights the significant heterogeneity of thermal conditions at different locations in the tank where the average temperature of the fermentation was 21.2 °C, although there were temperature ranges of 4.6°C, and average spatial standard deviation of ±1.21ºC. In the upper part of the tank we found high heterogeneity of temperatures, the higher temperatures and therefore the higher fermentation rates. While at the bottom, it has been computed an area in the phase diagram practically half of the area occupied by the sensors of the upper tank, therefore this location showed higher temperature homogeneity

An important parameter in integrated optical device is the propagation loss of the waveguide. Its characterization gives the information of the fabrication quality as well as the information of other passive devices on the chip as it is the basic building block of the passive devices. Although, over the last three decades many methods have been developed, there is not a single standard present yet. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the methods existing from the past as well as methods developed very recently in order to provide a complete picture of the pros and cons of different types of methods and from this comparison the best method is suggested according to the authors opinion. To support the claim, apart from the analytical comparison, this paper also presents a comparison performed with the experimental results between the suggested best method which is recently proposed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers based on undercoupled all-pass microring structure and the popular cut-back method.

To improve consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, foods can be enriched with omega-3 rich oils. Microencapsulation of omega-3 oils minimizes oxidative deterioration and allows their use in stable and easy-to-handle form. Microencapsulation of omega-3 fatty acids can be achieved by using a variety of methods, with the two most commonly used commercial processes being complex coacervation and spray dried emulsions. A variety of other methods are in development including spray chilling, extrusion coating and liposome entrapment. The key parameter in any of these processes is the selection of wall material. For spray dried emulsions and complex coacervates protein or polysaccharides are primarily used as shell material, although complex coacervation is currently commercially limited to gelatin. Here we review the need for microencapsulation of omega-3 oils, methods of microencapsulation and analysis, and the selection of shell material components. In particular, we discuss the method of complex coacervation, including its benefits and limitations. This review highlights the need for research on the fundamentals of interfacial and complexation behaviour of various proteins, gums and polyphenols to encapsulate and deliver omega-3 fatty acids, particularly with regard to broadening the range of shell materials that can be used in complex coacervation of omega-3 rich oils.

The introduction of advanced welding methods as an alternative joining process to riveting in the manufacture of primary aircraft structure has the potential to realize reductions in both manufacturing costs and structural weight. However, welding processes can introduce undesirable residual stresses and distortions in the final fabricated components, as well as localized loss of mechanical properties at the weld joints. The aim of this research is to determine and characterize the key process effects of advanced welding assembly methods on stiffened panel static strength performance. This in-depth understanding of the relationships between welding process effects and buckling and collapse strength is required to achieve manufacturing cost reductions without introducing structural analysis uncertainties and hence conservative over designed welded panels. This current work is focused at the sub-component level and examines the static strength of friction stir welded multi stiffener panels. The undertaken experimental and computational studies have demonstrated that local skin buckling is predominantly influenced by the magnitude of welding induced residual stresses and associated geometric distortions, whereas panel collapse behavior is sensitive to the lateral width of the physically joined skin and stiffener flange material, the strength of material in the Heat Affected Zone as well as the magnitude of the welding induced residual stresses. In this chapter, advanced characterization of membrane fouling as a diagnostic tool has been summarized to prevent membrane fouling. Physical, chemical and biological analyses as membrane autopsies are mainly utilized to better understand membrane foulant. The physical characterization gives structure, roughness, charge effect, strength and hydrophobicity of membrane fouling. The chemical methods provide qualitative and quantitative measurements of different inorganic and organic matter. The biological properties present the spatial biofilm distribution, structure of dominant microorganisms and isolation and identification of microorganisms. In addition, detailed membrane foulant types are reviewed in terms of structure, roughness, hydrophobicity, charge effect, strength, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, iron, silicate, particle, functional group, biopolymer, humic acid, polysaccharide, structural composition, biofilm structure, microorganism and foulant interaction.
