Elastic scattering angular distributions for (7)Be, (9)Be, and (10)Be isotopes on (12)C target were measured at laboratory energies of 18.8, 26.0, and 23.2 MeV, respectively. The analysis was performed in terms of optical model potentials using Woods-Saxon and double-folding form factors. Also, continuum discretized coupled-channels calculations were performed for (7)Be and (9)Be + (12)C systems to infer the role of breakup in the elastic scattering. For the (10)Be + (12)C system, bound states coupled-channels calculations were considered. Moreover, total reaction cross sections were deduced from the elastic scattering analysis and compared with published data on other weakly and tightly bound projectiles elastically scattered on the (12)C target, as a function of energy.

Angular distributions for the elastic scattering of (8)B, (7)Be, and (6)Li on a (12)C target have been measured at E(lab) = 25.8, 18.8, and 12.3 MeV, respectively. The analyses of these angular distributions have been performed in terms of the optical model using Woods-Saxon and double-folding type potentials. The effect of breakup in the elastic scattering of (8)B + (12)C is investigated by performing coupled-channels calculations with the continuum discretized coupled-channel method and cluster-model folding potentials. Total reaction cross sections were deduced from the elastic-scattering analysis and compared with published data on elastic scattering of other weakly and tightly bound projectiles on (12)C, as a function of energy. With the exception of (4)He and (16)O, the data can be described using a universal function for the reduced cross sections.

A study of the kinematics of the alpha-d coincidences in the (6)Li + (59)Co system at a bombarding energy of E(lab) = 29.6MeV is presented. With exclusive measurements performed over different angular intervals it is possible to identify the respective contributions of the sequential and direct projectile breakup components. The angular distributions of both breakup components are fairly well described by the Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels framework (CDCC). Furthermore, a careful analysis of these processes using a semiclassical approach provides information on both their lifetime and their distance of occurrence with respect to the target. Breakup to the low-lying (near-threshold) continuum is delayed, and happens at large internuclear distances. This suggests that the influence of the projectile breakup on the complete fusion process can be related essentially to the direct breakup to the (6)Li high-lying continuum spectrum.

alpha-d coincidence data are studied for the (6)Li + (59)Co reaction at E(lab) = 29.6 MeV. A kinematic analysis is used to identify which process, leading to the same final state, has the major contribution for selected angular regions. The contributions of the (6)Li sequential and direct breakup to the incomplete fusion/transfer process is discussed by considering the corresponding lifetimes obtained by using a semiclassical approach.

Wurtzite GaN epilayers bombarded at 300 K with 200 MeV Au-197(16+) ions are studied by a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry (RBS/C). Results reveal the formation of near-continuous tracks propagating throughout the entire similar to1.5-mum-thick GaN film. These tracks, similar to100 Angstrom in diameter, exhibit a large degree of structural disordering but do not appear to be amorphous. Throughout the bombarded epilayer, high-resolution TEM reveals planar defects which are parallel to the basal plane of the GaN film. The gross level of lattice disorder, as measured by RBS/C, gradually increases with increasing ion fluence up to similar to10(13) cm(-2). For larger fluences, delamination of the nitride film from the sapphire substrate occurs. Based on these results, physical mechanisms of the formation of lattice disorder in GaN in such a high electronic stopping power regime are discussed. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Ecological speciation and its hallmark, adaptive radiation is a process from which most of the current biodiversity derives. As ecological opportunity allows species to colonise unoccupied niches, natural selection drives adaptive phenotypical change. In this thesis, I begin by describing how this evolutionary process acted on the evolution of the clownfishes. During its infancy, this iconic group of coral reef fishes developed a mutualism with sea anemone species. I show how this event triggered the evolutionary radiation of the group, generating species that now inhabit diverse habitats of the coral reefs. Following the appearance of the mutualism, the diversification of the clownfish was catalysed by hybridisation events which shuffled genes, allowing hybrids to reach new fitness optima. While the clownfishes appeared in the region of the coral triangle, a lineage colonised the eastern shores of Africa. I reconstructed the geographic history of the group and showed that this event lead to the rapid appearance of new species, replicating the evolutionary patterns of the original radiation. To better grasp the mechanisms of ecological speciation, I conducted analyses at the population level and identified similar evolutionary patterns than found at the clade level. I discuss how such result suggests a continuity bridging micro- and macroevolution, which so far only been theorised. In parallel to this study case, I question whether biotic and abiotic interactions can promote or restrain ecological speciation. Indeed, I show how the ecological setting of species can drastically impact on their diversification dynamics. Moreover, tradeoffs can occur between specialisation made on different ecological axes allowing species cohabitation. Overall, I show in this work that regardless of the few simple rules that explain the mechanism of ecological speciation, the unavoidable interactions with the ever changing ecological context lead diversification events to give always a different outcome. It is thus primordial to account for the ecological settings of species when discussing their evolutionary dynamics.

Rapidity-odd directed flow (v1) measurements for charged pions, protons, and antiprotons near midrapidity (y=0) are reported in sNN=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV Au+Au collisions as recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. At intermediate impact parameters, the proton and net-proton slope parameter dv1/dy|y=0 shows a minimum between 11.5 and 19.6 GeV. In addition, the net-proton dv1/dy|y=0 changes sign twice between 7.7 and 39 GeV. The proton and net-proton results qualitatively resemble predictions of a hydrodynamic model with a first-order phase transition from hadronic matter to deconfined matter, and differ from hadronic transport calculations.

Two single crystalline surfaces of Au vicinal to the (111) plane were modified with Pt and studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) in ultra-high vacuum environment. The vicinal surfaces studied are Au(332) and Au(887) and different Pt coverage (θPt) were deposited on each surface. From STM images we determine that Pt deposits on both surfaces as nanoislands with heights ranging from 1 ML to 3 ML depending on θPt. On both surfaces the early growth of Pt ad-islands occurs at the lower part of the step edge, with Pt ad-atoms being incorporated into the steps in some cases. XPS results indicate that partial alloying of Pt occurs at the interface at room temperature and at all coverage, as suggested by the negative chemical shift of Pt 4f core line, indicating an upward shift of the d-band center of the alloyed Pt. Also, the existence of a segregated Pt phase especially at higher coverage is detected by XPS. Sample annealing indicates that the temperature rise promotes a further incorporation of Pt atoms into the Au substrate as supported by STM and XPS results. Additionally, the catalytic activity of different PtAu systems reported in the literature for some electrochemical reactions is discussed considering our findings.

We report the STAR measurements of dielectron (e(+)e(-)) production at midrapidity (|y(ee)|<1) in Au+Au collisions at √[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The measurements are evaluated in different invariant mass regions with a focus on 0.30-0.76 (ρ-like), 0.76-0.80 (ω-like), and 0.98-1.05 (ϕ-like) GeV/c(2). The spectrum in the ω-like and ϕ-like regions can be well described by the hadronic cocktail simulation. In the ρ-like region, however, the vacuum ρ spectral function cannot describe the shape of the dielectron excess. In this range, an enhancement of 1.77±0.11(stat)±0.24(syst)±0.33(cocktail) is determined with respect to the hadronic cocktail simulation that excludes the ρ meson. The excess yield in the ρ-like region increases with the number of collision participants faster than the ω and ϕ yields. Theoretical models with broadened ρ contributions through interactions with constituents in the hot QCD medium provide a consistent description of the dilepton mass spectra for the measurement presented here and the earlier data at the Super Proton Synchrotron energies.

Local parity-odd domains are theorized to form inside a quark-gluon plasma which has been produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The local parity-odd domains manifest themselves as charge separation along the magnetic field axis via the chiral magnetic effect. The experimental observation of charge separation has previously been reported for heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energies. In this Letter, we present the results of the beam-energy dependence of the charge correlations in Au+Au collisions at midrapidity for center-of-mass energies of 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. After background subtraction, the signal gradually reduces with decreased beam energy and tends to vanish by 7.7 GeV. This implies the dominance of hadronic interactions over partonic ones at lower collision energies.
