It’s hard not to be somewhat cynical about the self-congratulatory ‘diversity’ at the centre of the growing calendar of art bi/tri-ennials. The –ennial has proven expedient to the global tourism circuit, keeping regional economies and a relatively moderate pool of transnational artists afloat and the Asia Pacific Triennial is no exception. The mediation of representation that is imperative to the ‘best of’ formats of these transnational art shows hinges on a categorical backwardness that can feel more than a little like a Miss World competition than a progressive art show because the little tag in parenthesis after each artist’s name seems just as politically precarious now as it did forty years ago. Despite a weighty corpus of practical and critical work to the contrary, identity politics are so intrinsic to art capitalization, for both artists and institutions, that extricating ourselves from the particular and strategic politics of identification is seemingly impossible. Not that everyone wants to of course.

Patriarchal values : girls are more apt to change

Patriarchal values: girls are more apt to change How has the family value system changed between generations, especially when taking into account the gender dimension? This article presents some results from a study carried outin 2007 in one village of the Gourani tribe where the people are followers of Ahle Hagh in Islamabad Gharb (west of Iran). The differences between generations (those born and raised before and after the Islamic Revolution) in patriarchal values in the family are statistically significant. The older generation opts for the man of the family to make most of the decisions; on children’s education, marriage, naming, the families expenditure, the place for residence, the social network of the family and even the number of children. The younger generation has a different value system and it has moved towards a more egalitarian type of family. With the gender variable included in the findings we see that although the values of the younger male population have evolved toward a less patriarchal decision making structure inthe family, the degree of changes among the young women is much higher. Looking into the preferences for male sex for the first child as well as a larger number of boys in the family, the difference between generations is significant. However data on the differences analyzed with the gender variable proves that the changes concerning the equality of sexes are mainly due to drastic changes in the young women’s value system. That is, the male population, young or old, still prefer to have a boy as their first born and to have more sons in the family. But the young female generation in the rural area sees less difference in having boys or girls in the family. It is concluded that reforms in the old value system is an evolving process of everyday life and that the girls are the main social force for change.

Black and white : in search of an ‘apt’ response to Indigenous writing

‘The good editor,’ suggests Thomas McCormack in his Fiction Editor, the Novel and the Novelist, ‘reads, and … responds aptly’ to the writer’s work, ‘where “aptly” means “as the ideal appropriate reader would”.’ McCormack develops an argument that encompasses the dual ideas of sensibility and craft as essential characteristics of the fiction editor. But at an historical juncture that has seen increasing interest in the publication of Indigenous writing, and when Indigenous writers themselves may envisage a multiplicity of readers (writing, for instance, for family and community, and to educate a wider white audience), who is the ‘ideal appropriate reader’ for the literary works of the current generation of Australian Indigenous writers? And what should the work of this ‘good editor’ be when engaging with the text of an Indigenous writer? This paper examines such questions using the work of Margaret McDonell and Jennifer Jones, among others, to explore ways in which non-Indigenous editors may apply aspects of McCormack’s ‘apt response’ to the editing of Indigenous texts.

APT versus modelo de fator de retorno esperado : a aplicação de duas ferramentas de previsão de retornos das ações na BOVESPA

Apesar da grande evolução, a questão da precificação de ativos encontra-se ainda cercada de incertezas e indefinições quanto à forma como esta deve ser feita. A incerteza por parte dos investidores em relação aos resultados a serem obtidos em suas aplicações no mercado financeiro gera forte demanda por modelos mais precisos quanto à capacidade de quantificação do retorno esperado. Este trabalho procura, em uma análise preliminar, estudar, utilizando o tratamento estatístico de regressão múltipla, os fatores explicativos dos retornos diferenciais das ações na Bolsa de Valores de São Paulo (Bovespa) no período de janeiro de 1995 a dezembro de 1999. Em seguida, visa-se analisar, através de um teste comparativo de desempenho envolvendo simulação de investimentos em portfolios de ações, a capacidade do Modelo de Fator de Retorno Esperado de Haugen e Baker (1996) e da APT (Arbitrage Pricing Theory) de Ross (1976) em prognosticar os retornos das 70 ações incluídas na amostra. Por fim, levanta-se o perfil de risco e liquidez dos portfolios selecionados pelos modelos a fim de verificar a relação risco-retorno. Os resultados apontaram sete fatores capazes de explicar o retorno diferencial mensal das ações. Contrapondo-se aos pressupostos teóricos, nenhum fator de risco inseriu-se no grupo de fatores selecionados. Já os fatores que apresentaram significância estatística em suas médias, dois inserem-se no grupo liquidez, três referem-se aos parâmetros de valor das ações e dois estão relacionados ao histórico de preços das ações. Comparando os resultados obtidos pelos modelos inseridos neste estudo, conclui-se que o Modelo de Fator de Retorno Esperado é mais eficiente na tarefa de predizer os retornos futuros das ações componentes da amostra. Este, além de ter alcançado uma média de retornos mensais superior, foi capaz de sustentar retorno acumulado superior ao da APT durante todo o período de teste (jan/2000 a dez/2002). Adicionalmente, o uso deste modelo permitiu selecionar portfolios com um perfil de menor risco.
