In this work, lipolysis, proteolysis and viscosity of ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk containing different somatic cell counts (SCC) were investigated. UHT milks were analysed on days 8, 30, 60, 90 and 120 of storage. Lipolysis as measured by free fatty acids increase, casein degradation and viscosity of UHT milk were not affected by SCC but increased during storage. A negative relationship was observed between SCC and casein as a percentage of true protein on the 120th day of storage, hence indicating that high SCC increases the proteolysis of UHT milk by the end of its shelf life.

Pressure drop and minimum fluidization velocity were experimentally studied in a vibro-fluidized bed of inert particles subjected to different vibration intensities during drying of guava pulp. Maltodextrin was added to the pulp in order to prevent stickiness between particles and the consequent bed collapse. Pulps were initially concentrated, resulting in pastes with different soluble solids content, and a constant fraction of maltodextrin was guaranteed in the final pulp samples. The pulp rheological behavior as affected by temperature and total soluble solids content, including maltodextrin, was evaluated and the effect of pulp apparent viscosity on pressure drop and minimum vibro-fluidization velocity were investigated. Two types of inert particles -3.6 mm glass beads and 3 mm Teflon cylinders were tested and, due to lower pressure drop presented by Teflon cylinders during operation of the dry vibro-fluidized bed, these particles were adopted for pulp drying process. Increasing pulp apparent viscosity caused a considerable increase in the vibro-fluidized bed pressure drop during pulp drying and, as a consequence resulted in a larger value of minimum vibro-fluidization velocity. on the other hand, the negative effect of increasing apparent viscosity could be attenuated by increasing the fluidized bed vibration intensity, which could prevent stickiness between particles. The development of artificial neural network (ANN) models to predict the rheological behavior of grouts is described is this paper and the sensitivity of such parameters to the variation in mixture ingredients is also evaluated. The input parameters of the neural network were the mixture ingredients influencing the rheological behavior of grouts, namely the cement content, fly ash, ground-granulated blast-furnace slag, limestone powder, silica fume, water-binder ratio (w/b), high-range water-reducing admixture, and viscosity-modifying agent (welan gum). The six outputs of the ANN models were the mini-slump, the apparent viscosity at low shear, and the yield stress and plastic viscosity values of the Bingham and modified Bingham models, respectively. The model is based on a multi-layer feed-forward neural network. The details of the proposed ANN with its architecture, training, and validation are presented in this paper. A database of 186 mixtures from eight different studies was developed to train and test the ANN model. The effectiveness of the trained ANN model is evaluated by comparing its responses with the experimental data that were used in the training process. The results show that the ANN model can accurately predict the mini-slump, the apparent viscosity at low shear, the yield stress, and the plastic viscosity values of the Bingham and modified Bingham models of the pseudo-plastic grouts used in the training process. The results can also predict these properties of new mixtures within the practical range of the input variables used in the training with an absolute error of 2%, 0.5%, 8%, 4%, 2%, and 1.6%, respectively. The sensitivity of the ANN model showed that the trend data obtained by the models were in good agreement with the actual experimental results, demonstrating the effect of mixture ingredients on fluidity and the rheological parameters with both the Bingham and modified Bingham models.

Bifidobacterium strains of human origin were screened for their ability to grow in milk and produce exopolysaccharides (EPS). Bifidobacterium strains were grown in low-fat UHT milk and were evaluated for their growth, acidification properties, EPS production and ability to increase the viscosity of fermented milk. The strains that grew well in milk were strains of Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium longum and B. longum subsp. longum. Among the 22 strains, EPS was produced by Bifidobacterium bifidum ALM 35, B. breve NCIMB 8807 (UCC 2003), B. longum subsp. infantis CCUG 52486 and Bifidobacterium infantis NCIMB 702205 at concentrations ranging from 25 to 140 . The molecular mass and the composition varied considerably, depending on the strain. Analysis of the correlation between the apparent viscosity of the fermented milk and pH indicated that the EPS produced during the acidification of milk possibly contributed to the viscosity of the milk products.

A laboratory scale twin screw extruder has been interfaced with a near infrared (NIR) spectrometer via a fibre optic link so that NIR spectra can be collected continuously during the small scale experimental melt state processing of polymeric materials. This system can be used to investigate melt state processes such as reactive extrusion, in real time, in order to explore the kinetics and mechanism of the reaction. A further advantage of the system is that it has the capability to measure apparent viscosity simultaneously which gives important additional information about molecular weight changes and polymer degradation during processing. The system was used to study the melt processing of a nanocomposite consisting of a thermoplastic polyurethane and an organically modified layered silicate.

The classical Chapman-Enskog expansion is performed for the recently proposed finite-volume formulation of lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) method D.V. Patil, K.N. Lakshmisha, Finite volume TVD formulation of lattice Boltzmann simulation on unstructured mesh, J. Comput. Phys. 228 (2009) 5262-5279]. First, a modified partial differential equation is derived from a numerical approximation of the discrete Boltzmann equation. Then, the multi-scale, small parameter expansion is followed to recover the continuity and the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations with additional error terms. The expression for apparent value of the kinematic viscosity is derived for finite-volume formulation under certain assumptions. The attenuation of a shear wave, Taylor-Green vortex flow and driven channel flow are studied to analyze the apparent viscosity relation.

This work presents an experimental investigation on the rheology of A356 alloy in semisolid state using a high temperature Couette type viscometer. The molten liquid, resides in the annular space between the cylinders, is stirred and cooled continuously during experiments. The stirring results in fragmentation of dendrites which are transported into bulk liquid and form a semisolid slurry. The viscosity of the slurry is distinct in nature, which depends on microstructure of the suspended dendrites after coarsening. Hence, in the work, the variation of viscosity and microstructure is captured during cooling under different process parameters such as shear rate and cooling rate. Angular velocity of the inner cylinder and torque applied to stir the slurry are recorded to determine the apparent viscosity of the slurry. Temperature of the slurry is recorded to calculate the fraction of solids present in the slurry. For micrograph analysis, a vacuum quartz tube is used to remove the slurry-samples during experiments and they are quenched them in water.

The gel effect in the reactive extrusion process for free radical polymerization in a closely intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder was investigated. First the reaction kinetic model was constructed mainly on the basis of entanglement theory. Next, numerical calculation expressions for the initiator and monomer concentrations, monomer conversion, average molecular weight and apparent viscosity were deduced. Finally, the evolution of the above variables were shown and discussed for the example of butyl methacrylate. The simulated results of the monomer conversion are in good agreement with experimental results.

The free radical grafting of polyethylene with vinyl monomers by reactive extrusion was studied numerically. Numerical computation expressions of key variables, such as the concentrations of the initiator and polymer, grafting degree, average molecular weight and apparent viscosity, were deduced. The evolutions of the above variables were predicted by means of an uncoupled semi-implicit iterative algorithm. The monomer conversion monotonically increases with decreasing throughput or increasing initial initiator concentration; with increasing barrel temperature, the monomer conversion first increases then decreases. The simulated results are nearly in good agreement with the experimental results.

Binary CNBR/PP-g-GMA and ternary CNBR/PP/PP-g-GMA thermoplastic elastomers were prepared by reactive blending carboxy nitrile rubber (CNBR) powder with nanometer dimension and polypropylene functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (PP-g-GMA). Morphology observation by using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and TEM revealed that the size of CNBR dispersed phase in CNBR/PP-g-GMA binary blends was much smaller than that of the corresponding CNBR/PP binary blends. Thermal behavior of CNBR/PP-g-GMA and CNBR/PP blends was studied by DSC. Comparing with the plain PP-g-GMA, T, of PP-g-GMA in CNBR/PP-g-GMA blends increased about 10degreesC. Both thermodynamic and kinetic effects would influence the crystallization behavior of PP-g-GMA in CNBR/PP-g-GMA blends. At a fixed content of CNBR, the apparent viscosity of the blending system increased with increasing the content of PP-g-GMA. FTIR spectrum verified that the improvement of miscibility of CNBR and PP-g-GMA was originated from the reaction between carboxy end groups of CNBR and epoxy groups of GMA grafted onto PP molecular chains. Comparing with CNBR/PP blends, the tensile strength, stress at 100% strain, and elongation at break of CNBR/PP-g-GMA blends were greatly improved.

An ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) was functionalized with an iso cyanate-bearing unsaturated monomer, allyl(3-isocyanate-4-tolyl) carbamate (TAI), with dicumyl peroxide as an initiator in a xylene solution. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used to confirm the formation of EPM-g-TAI. The peak at 2273 cm(-1), characteristic of -NCO groups in EPM-g-TAI, revealed evidence of grafting. The grafting degree was determined with both chemical titration and FTIR. The grafting degree could be adjusted, and the maximum was over 6 wt % without any gelation. The molar mass distribution of EPM-g-TAI was narrower than that of EPM. The rheological behavior of both EPM-g-TAI and EPM was investigated with a rotational rheometer. The apparent viscosity of EPM-g-TAI was higher than that of EPM and increased with an increasing grafting degree of TAI. Surface analysis by contact-angle measurements showed that contact angles of EPM-g-TAI samples to a given polar liquid decreased with an increasing grafting degree of TAI. We also obtained the dispersion component of the surface free energy (gamma(S)(d)), the polar component of the surface free energy (gamma(S)(d)), and the total surface free energy (gamma(S) = gamma(S)(d) + gamma(S)(p)) of the grafted EPM. These parameters increased with the enhancement of the grafting degree, which gave us a quantitative estimation of the polar contribution of the grafted TAI to the total surface free energy of EPM-g-TAI.

The growth of stem cells can be modulated by physical factors such as extracellular matrix nanotopography. We hypothesize that nanotopography modulates cell behavior by changing the integrin clustering and focal adhesion (FA) assembly, leading to changes in cytoskeletal organization and cell mechanical properties. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) cultured on 350 nm gratings of tissue-culture polystyrene (TCPS) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) showed decreased expression of integrin subunits alpha2, alpha , alpha V, beta2, beta 3 and beta 4 compared to the unpatterned controls. On gratings, the elongated hMSCs exhibited an aligned actin cytoskeleton, while on unpatterned controls, spreading cells showed a random but denser actin cytoskeleton network. Expression of cytoskeleton and FA components was also altered by the nanotopography as reflected in the mechanical properties measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM) indentation. On the rigid TCPS, hMSCs on gratings exhibited lower instantaneous and equilibrium Young's moduli and apparent viscosity. On the softer PDMS, the effects of nanotopography were not significant. However, hMSCs cultured on PDMS showed lower cell mechanical properties than those on TCPS, regardless of topography. These suggest that both nanotopography and substrate stiffness could be important in determining mechanical properties, while nanotopography may be more dominant in determining the organization of the cytoskeleton and FAs.

Solder paste is the most important strategic bonding material used in the assembly of surface mount devices in electronic industries. It is known to exhibit a thixotropic behavior, which is recognized by the decrease in apparent viscosity of paste material with time when subjected to a constant shear rate. The proper characterization of this time-dependent rheological behavior of solder pastes is crucial for establishing the relationships between the pastes structure and flow behavior; and for correlating the physical parameters with paste printing performance. In this article, we present a novel method which has been developed for characterizing the time-dependent and non-Newtonian rheological behavior of solder pastes and flux mediums as a function of shear rates. We also present results of the study of the rheology of the solder pastes and flux mediums using the structural kinetic modeling approach, which postulates that the network structure of solder pastes breaks down irreversibly under shear, leading to time and shear-dependent changes in the flow properties. Our results show that for the solder pastes used in the study, the rate and extent of thixotropy was generally found to increase with increasing shear rate. The technique demonstrated in this study has wide utility for R&D personnel involved in new paste formulation, for implementing quality control procedures used in solder-paste manufacture and packaging; and for qualifying new flip-chip assembly lines.
