The CR superconducting magnet is a dipole of the FAIR project of GSI in Germany. The quench of the strand is simulated using FEM software ANSYS. From the simulation, the quench propagation can be visualized. Programming with APDL, the value of propagation velocity of normal zone is calculated. Also the voltage increasing over time of the strand is computed and pictured. Furthermore, the Minimum Propagation Zone (MPZ) is studied. At last, the relation between the current and the propagation velocity of normal zone, and the influence of initial temperature on quench propagation are studied.

This paperwork compares the a numerical validation of the finite element model (FEM) with respect the experimental tests of a new generation wind turbine blade designed by TPI Composites Inc. called BSDS (Blade System Design Study). The research is focused on the analysis by finite element (FE) of the BSDS blade and its comparison with respect the experimental data from static and dynamic investigations. The goal of the research is to create a general procedure which is based on a finite element model and will be used to create an accurate digital copy for any kind of blade. The blade prototype was created in SolidWorks and the blade of Sandia National Laboratories Blade System Design Study was accurately reproduced. At a later stage the SolidWorks model was imported in Ansys Mechanical APDL where the shell geometry was created and modal, static and fatigue analysis were carried out. The outcomes of the FEM analysis were compared with the real test on the BSDS blade at Clarkson University laboratory carried out by a new procedures called Blade Test Facility that includes different methods for both the static and dynamic test of the wind turbine blade. The outcomes from the FEM analysis reproduce the real behavior of the blade subjected to static loads in a very satisfying way. A most detailed study about the material properties could improve the accuracy of the analysis.

Currently, finite element analyses are usually done by means of commercial software tools. Accuracy of analysis and computational time are two important factors in efficiency of these tools. This paper studies the effective parameters in computational time and accuracy of finite element analyses performed by ANSYS and provides the guidelines for the users of this software whenever they us this software for study on deformation of orthopedic bone plates or study on similar cases. It is not a fundamental scientific study and only shares the findings of the authors about structural analysis by means of ANSYS workbench. It gives an idea to the readers about improving the performance of the software and avoiding the traps. The solutions provided in this paper are not the only possible solutions of the problems and in similar cases there are other solutions which are not given in this paper. The parameters of solution method, material model, geometric model, mesh configuration, number of the analysis steps, program controlled parameters and computer settings are discussed through thoroughly in this paper.

The DMS-FEM, which enables functional approximations with C(1) or still higher inter-element continuity within an FEM-based meshing of the domain, has recently been proposed by Sunilkumar and Roy [39,40]. Through numerical explorations on linear elasto-static problems, the method was found to have conspicuously superior convergence characteristics as well as higher numerical stability against locking. These observations motivate the present study, which aims at extending and exploring the DMS-FEM to (geometrically) nonlinear elasto-static problems of interest in solid mechanics and assessing its numerical performance vis-a-vis the FEM. In particular, the DMS-FEM is shown to vastly outperform the FEM (presently implemented through the commercial software ANSYS (R)) as the former requires fewer linearization and load steps to achieve convergence. In addition, in the context of nearly incompressible nonlinear systems prone to volumetric locking and with no special numerical artefacts (e.g. stabilized or mixed weak forms) employed to arrest locking, the DMS-FEM is shown to approach the incompressibility limit much more closely and with significantly fewer iterations than the FEM. The numerical findings are suggestive of the important role that higher order (uniform) continuity of the approximated field variables play in overcoming volumetric locking and the great promise that the method holds for a range of other numerically ill-conditioned problems of interest in computational structural mechanics. Road safety barriers are used to minimise the severity of road accidents and protect lives and property. There are several types of barrier in use today. This paper reports the initial phase of research carried out to study the impact response of portable water-filled barrier (PWFB) which has the potential to absorb impact energy and hence provide crash mitigation under low to moderate speeds. Current research on the impact and energy absorption capacity of water-filled road safety barriers is limited due to the complexity of fluid-structure interaction under dynamic impact. In this paper, a novel fluid-structure interaction method is developed based on the combination of Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and Finite Element Method (FEM). The sloshing phenomenon of water inside a PWFB is investigated to explore the energy absorption capacity of water under dynamic impact. It was found that water plays an important role in energy absorption. The coupling analysis developed in this paper will provide a platform to further the research in optimising the behaviour of the PWFB. The effect of the amount of water on its energy absorption capacity is investigated and the results have practical applications in the design of PWFBs.

The development and design of electric high power devices with electromagnetic computer-aided engineering (EM-CAE) software such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Boundary Element Method (BEM) has been widely adopted. This paper presents the analysis of a Fault Current Limiter (FCL), which acts as a high-voltage surge protector for power grids. A prototype FCL was built. The magnetic flux in the core and the resulting electromagnetic forces in the winding of the FCL were analyzed using both FEM and BEM. An experiment on the prototype was conducted in a laboratory. The data obtained from the experiment is compared to the numerical solutions to determine the suitability and accuracy of the two methods.

Portable water filled barriers (PWFB) are semi-rigid roadside barriers which have the potential to display good crash attenuation characteristics at low and moderate impact speeds. The traditional mesh based numerical methods alone fail to simulate this type of impact with precision, stability and efficiency. This paper proposes to develop an advanced simulation model based on the combination of Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics (SPH), a meshless method, and finite element method (FEM) for fluid-structure analysis using the commercially available software package LS-Dyna. The interaction between SPH particles and FEA elements is studied in this paper. Two methods of element setup at the element boundary were investigated. The response of the impacted barrier and fluid inside were analysed and compared. The system response and lagging were observed and reported in this paper. It was demonstrated that coupled SPH/FEM can be used in full scale PWFB modelling application. This will aid the research in determining the best initial setup to couple FEA and SPH in road safety barrier for impact response and safety analysis in the future.

Hardness is defined as the resistance and load bearing capability of an item. Seat hardness is an important factor in seat comfort as it impacts on a number of variables including seat postural stability, postural control, pressure comfort as a result of tissue deformation, and occupant vibration. The development of the test rig further on described in this report will enable Futuris Automotive to develop their current comfort testing procedures and thus increase the comfort of their automotive seats. The test rig consists of a buttock indenter, which produces a controlled application of a load to a seat cushion with measured displacement via a linear indenter. In parallel with the physical property presented, an analytic (software) finite element tool was developed to simulate seat pressure in an ANSYS Workbench V13 environment. This report also details the procedure required for Futuris to accurately and precisely measure cushion hardness which will enhance their comfort testing procedures, product development and target settings. The report is divided into three main sections: 1 Test equipment specification (M4) - A detailed description of the process used to build the seat cushion indenter and a description of the indenter mechanical structure and electrical functionality (chapter 2). 2 Analytic tool specification (M5) – A detailed description of the CAE seat and indenter software tool, developed as a finite element model (FEM) under ANSYS Workbench V13 to simulate indentation of a physical seat cushion similar to the hardware tool (chapter 3). 3 Product Development and Comfort Design Procedure (M6) - The cushion hardness testing procedure to be used with the physical indenter. This milestone is partially incomplete, as it covers a description of the test procedure to be applied, however not the operating system (control software) required to operate the physical property (chapter 4). Although outside the scope of this project, this report also details the testing procedures required to measure overall seatback hardness.

A beam-column resting on continuous Winkler foundation and discrete elastic supports is considered. The beam-column is of variable cross-section and the variation of sectional properties along the axis of the beam-column is deterministic. Young's modulus, mass per unit length and distributed axial loadings of the beam-column have a stochastic distribution. The foundation stiffness coefficient of the Winkler model, the stiffnesses of discrete elastic supports, stiffnesses of end springs and the end thrust, are all considered as random parameters. The material property fluctuations and distributed axial loadings are considered to constitute independent, one-dimension uni-variate homogeneous real stochastic fields in space. The foundation stiffness coefficient, stiffnesses of the discrete elastic supports, stiffnesses of end springs and the end thrust are considered to constitute independent random variables. Static response, free vibration and stability behaviour of the beam-column are studied. Hamilton's principle is used to formulate the problem using stochastic FEM. Sensitivity vectors of the response and stability parameters are evaluated. Using these statistics of free vibration frequencies, mode shapes, buckling parameters, etc., are evaluated. A numerical example is given.

A Finite Element Method based forward solver is developed for solving the forward problem of a 2D-Electrical Impedance Tomography. The Method of Weighted Residual technique with a Galerkin approach is used for the FEM formulation of EIT forward problem. The algorithm is written in MatLAB7.0 and the forward problem is studied with a practical biological phantom developed. EIT governing equation is numerically solved to calculate the surface potentials at the phantom boundary for a uniform conductivity. An EIT-phantom is developed with an array of 16 electrodes placed on the inner surface of the phantom tank filled with KCl solution. A sinusoidal current is injected through the current electrodes and the differential potentials across the voltage electrodes are measured. Measured data is compared with the differential potential calculated for known current and solution conductivity. Comparing measured voltage with the calculated data it is attempted to find the sources of errors to improve data quality for better image reconstruction.
