In 1957, the Iowa State Highway Commission, with financial assistance from the aluminum industry, constructed a 220-ft (67-m) long, four-span continuous, aluminum girder bridge to carry traffic on Clive Road (86th Street) over Interstate 80 near Des Moines, Iowa. The bridge had four, welded I-shape girders that were fabricated in pairs with welded diaphragms between an exterior and an interior girder. The interior diaphragms between the girder pairs were bolted to girder brackets. A composite, reinforced concrete deck served as the roadway surface. The bridge, which had performed successfully for about 35 years of service, was removed in the fall of 1993 to make way for an interchange at the same location. Prior to the bridge demolition, load tests were conducted to monitor girder and diaphragm bending strains and deflections in the northern end span. Fatigue testing of the aluminum girders that were removed from the end spans were conducted by applying constant-amplitude, cyclic loads. These tests established the fatigue strength of an existing, welded, flange-splice detail and added, welded, flange-cover plates and horizontal web plate attachment details. This part, Part 2, of the final report focuses on the fatigue tests of the aluminum girder sections that were removed from the bridge and on the analysis of the experimental data to establish the fatigue strength of full-size specimens. Seventeen fatigue fractures that were classified as Category E weld details developed in the seven girder test specimens. Linear regression analyses of the fatigue test results established both nominal and experimental stress-range versus load cycle relationships (SN curves) for the fatigue strength of fillet-welded connections. The nominal strength SN curve obtained by this research essentially matched the SN curve for Category E aluminum weldments given in the AASHTO LRFD specifications. All of the Category E fatigue fractures that developed in the girder test specimens satisfied the allowable SN relationship specified by the fatigue provisions of the Aluminum Association. The lower-bound strength line that was set at two standard deviations below the least squares regression line through the fatigue fracture data points related well with the Aluminum Association SN curve. The results from the experimental tests of this research have provided additional information regarding behavioral characteristics of full-size, aluminum members and have confirmed that aluminum has the strength properties needed for highway bridge girders.

In this work, a method was developed for the application of red mud, an alkaline leaching waste, from a bauxite processing plant located in northern Brazil (Amazon region) as starting material for heavy clay products. Samples were prepared by pressing blends of red mud and clay, which were then fired at temperatures from 900 ºC to 1190 ºC. Characterization was carried out by chemical analysis, differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the following ceramic properties were evaluated: water absorption, linear shrinkage and flexural strength. In order to evaluate the Na+ stability in the dense ceramic, leaching tests were also carried out on the specimens after sintering process. Results indicated that samples with 50 and 70 wt% of red mud are proper for being used in the production of ceramic bodies, due to its excellent properties, mainly high mechanical resistance and low water absorption, showing thus, an option to minimizing the environmental impacts caused by the aluminum industry.

Removal of Mg from aluminum scraps, known as demagging, has been widely applied in the,aluminum industry. This work discusses bubble-formation theories and magnesium kinetic removal from aluminum scraps using chlorine and inert gas fluxing. The interfacial area of the bubbles and residence time were estimated using a mathematical model. To inject gaseous chlorine, three types of nozzles were used with varying internal diameter. In addition, a porous plug, as well as varying input chlorine flow and concentration were used. The use of lower chlorine concentration improves efficiency because the interfacial tension is reduced therefore, more and smaller bubbles are formed. És una de les poques empreses de Catalunya que pertanyen al sector de la indústria metal·lúrgica, i de les úniques que es dediquen a l’extrusió i mecanitzat de l’alumini, així com al seu disseny i comercialització. El projecte se centra en l’anàlisi de la planta de mecanitzats d’alumini i la proposta de mesures correctives per millorar-ne la seva productivitat

The present work aimed to characterize an aluminum industry by-product in natura (L.A. nat) and after phosphate and thermal pretreatments; evaluate the adsorption/desorption capacity of Cd and Pb by this L.A. nat form and after the aforementioned pretreatments, comparing them with an in natura iron mining by-product (L.F. nat). The L.A. nat presented a high pH as well as a high Na concentration and also an oxide-rich mineralogy. Pretreatment of the by-product had no significant effect upon Cd and Pd adsorption/desorption. The L.A. nat performed better than the L.F. nat as an Cd and Pb adsorbent.

Este trabalho, fundamentado em duas correntes teóricas terminológicas - a Socioterminologia e Teoria Comunicativa da Terminologia, propôs descrever e apresentar sob forma de glossário em uma versão impressa e outra eletrônica a linguagem técnica da ALBRAS Alumínio Brasileiro S.A., a maior indústria de produção de alumínio do norte do Brasil. A coleta dos termos para listagem foi feita a partir de 53 textos especializados distribuídos de acordo com sete áreas operacionais da empresa. Com este trabalho de coleta, buscou-se extrair não apenas os termos técnicos, mas também as definições e contextos de ocorrência dos termos. Para melhoramento qualitativo e quantitativo do repertório escolhido, elaboramos uma listagem com os termos coletados e procedemos com entrevistas, relativas ? s informações sobre esses termos, junto a um corpo de 20 funcionários da empresa. Essas entrevistas tiveram como propósito complementar informações relativas as definições e aos contextos. Esses dados foram digitalizados em um programa computacional chamado Lexique-Pro que automaticamente organizou as entradas do glossário em ordem alfabética. Após uma versão provisória, procedemos com a checagem junto a alguns especialistas da área para ver se as informações relativas as definições e aos contextos estavam de acordo com seus entendimentos. A versão definitiva do repertório possui 640 entradas que representam um amplo universo da linguagem técnica atual da metalurgia do alumínio, embora se compreenda que o trabalho tenha sido exaustivo, não representa a totalidade dos termos técnicos correspondente a esta área de conhecimento. Apresentamos as unidades terminológicas, descrevendo seus funcionamentos por meio de atribuição de definição e comprovando seus usos reais através de contextos. Assim, apresentamos o Glossário Terminológico da Indústria do Alumínio como uma importante ferramenta tanto para os profissionais da área quanto para os demais profissionais interessados pela linguagem desta atividade humana.

Apresenta-se neste trabalho uma análise da qualidade da tensão no Ponto de Acoplamento Comum (PAC) entre uma indústria de alumínio e o sistema interligado nacional, de modo a avaliar o impacto produzido por esta instalação na rede básica no que diz respeito aos fenômenos de flutuação de tensão, desequilíbrio de tensão e distorção harmônica de tensão. Os dados dos distúrbios da qualidade da energia citados anteriormente foram coletados através de uma campanha de medição com duração de 7 dias consecutivos, solicitada pelo Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS) em casos de cargas conectadas à rede básica que apresentem características não-lineares, como é o caso das indústrias de alumínio. Adicionalmente, um estudo computacional visando determinar os valores máximos de distorção harmônica de tensão no PAC é apresentado com o intuito de completar as análises via campanha de medição. Os programas computacionais utilizados para a realização do estudo foram o HarmZs do CEPEL e o Matlab 7.0.

Spent anodes, denominated butts in the aluminum industry, are recycled as part of the raw material used to produce new anodes. The fragmentation of the butt generates some sodium-rich powder, which is captured and included in the recycled material. This paper evaluates the influence of sodium content on anode reactivity. Six formulations with 0 to 25% butt powder were used. An average increase of 48 ppm of sodium from one to another formulation caused average increments of 3.38 and 2.72% for air and CO2 reactivity, respectively. The quality-related figures varied from 1.34 to 1.12 for CO2 and from 1.10 to 0.62 for air, showing quality loss in higher sodium content and higher impact on air reactivity. The Fischer formula predicted a carbon specific consumption of - 48.47 kg.t-1 Al for baked carbon anodes with 127 ppm to 367 ppm of sodium content, showing that the sodium can cause relevant carbon losses and increase costs of the aluminum production.
