Porous polymer particles are used in an extraordinarily wide range of advanced and everyday applications, from combinatorial chemistry, solid-phase organic synthesis and polymer-supported reagents, to environmental analyses and the purification of drinking water. The installation and exploitation of functional chemical handles on the particles is often a prerequisite for their successful exploitation, irrespective of the application and the porous nature of the particles. New methodology for the chemical modification of macroreticular polymers is the primary focus of the work presented in this thesis. Porous polymer microspheres decorated with a diverse range of functional groups were synthesised by the post-polymerisation chemical modification of beaded polymers via olefin cross metathesis. The polymer microspheres were prepared by the precipitation polymerisation of divinylbenzene in porogenic (pore-forming) solvents; the olefin cross-metathesis (CM) functionalisation reactions exploited the pendent (polymer-bound) vinyl groups that were not consumed by polymerisation. Olefin CM reactions involving the pendent vinyl groups were performed in dichloromethane using second-generation Grubbs catalyst (Grubbs II), and a wide range of coupling partners used. The results obtained indicate that high quality, porous polymer microspheres synthesised by precipitation polymerisation in near-θ solvents can be functionalised by olefin CM under very mild conditions to install a diverse range of chemical functionalities into a common polydivinylbenzene precursor. Gel-type polymer microspheres were prepared by the precipitation copolymerisation reaction of divinylbenzene and allyl methacrylate in neat acetonitrile. The unreacted pendent vinyl groups that were not consumed by polymerisation were subjected to internal and external olefin metathesis-based hypercrosslinking reactions. Internal hypercrosslinking was carried out by using ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reactions in toluene using Grubbs II catalyst. Under these conditions, hypercrosslinked (HXL) polymers with specific surface areas around 500 m2g-1 were synthesised. External hypercrosslinking was attempted by using CM/RCM in the presence of a multivinyl coupling partner in toluene using second-generation Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst. The results obtained indicate that no HXL polymers were obtained. However, during the development of this methodology, a new type of polymerisation was discovered with tetraallylorthosilicate as monomer.

The structure of the product from the free radical bulk copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and allyl acetate (AAc) was investigated. The mole fraction of AAc plays an important role in the copolymerization of these two monomers. Molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) are completely altered when the feed composition is dominantly AAc. NMR spectroscopy confirmed the incorporation of AAc into the polymer. However, no allyl-allyl linkages were observed at low conversions. T-g was found to be affected by the incorporation of AAc into the polymer. (C) 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.

Free radical bulk copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and allyl acetate (AAc) has been investigated using electron spin resonance (ESR) and FT-near infrared (FTNIR) spectroscopy. Data are used to evaluate the rate constants. The mole fraction of AAc plays an important role in the copolymerization of these two monomers. AAc not only delays the Trommsdorff effect but also increases the onset of percentage total conversion at which the Trommsdorff region begins. With AAc fraction 0.5 and higher, no Trommsdorff effect was observed. Inclusion of AAc into copolymer structure mainly occurs in the Trommsdorf region or when the AAc fraction in the comonomer feed is dominant. This is associated with a drop in the concentration of propagating radicals. However, ESR spectra indicate that the MMA propagating radical is predominant during the reaction. In the comonomer mixtures where a Trommsdorff region can be observed, the addition of AAc does not produce any significant change in k(p) and k(t) in the steady state region. Major changes in k(p) and k(t) are observed after the gel point and glassy state, respectively. (C) 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of two substrates (enamel and dentin) considering two study factors: type of composite resin [methacrylate-based (Filtek Supreme) or silorane-based (Filtek LS)] and aging time (24 h or 3 months). Twenty human molars were selected and divided into 2 groups (n=10) considering two dental substrates, enamel or dentin. The enamel and dentin of each tooth was divided into two halves separated by a glass plate. Each tooth was restored using both tested composite resins following the manufacturer's instructions. The samples were sectioned, producing 4 sticks for each composite resin. Half of them were tested after 24 h and half after 3 months. µTBS testing was carried out at 0.05 mm/s. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD tests at α=0.05. Significant differences between composite resins and substrates were found (p<0.05), but no statistically significant difference was found for aging time and interactions among study factors. The methacrylate-based resin showed higher µTBS than the silorane-based resin. The µTBS for enamel was significantly higher than for dentin, irrespective of the composite resin and storage time. Three months of storage was not sufficient time to cause degradation of the bonding interaction of either of the composite resins to enamel and dentin.

Candida biofilms on denture surfaces are substantially reduced after a single immersion in denture cleanser. However, whether this effect is maintained when dentures are immersed in cleanser daily is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the daily use of enzymatic cleanser on Candida albicans biofilms on denture base materials. The surfaces of polyamide and poly(methyl methacrylate) resin specimens (n=54) were standardized and divided into 12 groups (n=9 per group), according to study factors (material type, treatment type, and periods of treatment). Candida albicans biofilms were allowed to form over 72 hours, after which the specimens were treated with enzymatic cleanser once daily for 1, 4, or 7 days. Thereafter, residual biofilm was ultrasonically removed and analyzed for viable cells (colony forming units/mm(2)) and enzymatic activity (phospholipase, aspartyl-protease, and hemolysin). Factors that interfered with the response variables were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA with the Holm-Sidak multiple comparison method (α=.05). Polyamide resin presented more viable cells of Candida albicans (P<.001) for both the evaluated treatment types and periods. Although enzymatic cleansing significantly (P<.001) reduced viable cells, daily use did not maintain this reduction (P<.001). Phospholipase activity significantly increased with time (P<.001) for both materials and treatments. However, poly(methyl methacrylate) based resin (P<.001) and enzymatic cleansing treatment (P<.001) contributed to lower phospholipase activity. Aspartyl-protease and hemolysin activities were not influenced by study factors (P>.05). Although daily use of an enzymatic cleanser reduced the number of viable cells and phospholipase activity, this treatment was not effective against residual biofilm over time.

Different surface treatment protocols of poly(methyl methacrylate) have been proposed to improve the adhesion of silicone-based resilient denture liners to poly(methyl methacrylate) surfaces. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different poly(methyl methacrylate) surface treatments on the adhesion of silicone-based resilient denture liners. Poly(methyl methacrylate) specimens were prepared and divided into 4 treatment groups: no treatment (control), methyl methacrylate for 180 seconds, acetone for 30 seconds, and ethyl acetate for 60 seconds. Poly(methyl methacrylate) disks (30.0 × 5.0 mm; n = 10) were evaluated regarding surface roughness and surface free energy. To evaluate tensile bond strength, the resilient material was applied between 2 treated poly(methyl methacrylate) bars (60.0 × 5.0 × 5.0 mm; n = 20 for each group) to form a 2-mm-thick layer. Data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey honestly significant difference tests (α = .05). A Pearson correlation test verified the influence of surface properties on tensile bond strength. Failure type was assessed, and the poly(methyl methacrylate) surface treatment modifications were visualized with scanning electron microscopy. The surface roughness was increased (P < .05) by methyl methacrylate treatment. For the acetone and ethyl acetate groups, the surface free energy decreased (P < .05). The tensile bond strength was higher for the methyl methacrylate and ethyl acetate groups (P < .05). No correlation was found regarding surface properties and tensile bond strength. Specimens treated with acetone and methyl methacrylate presented a cleaner surface, whereas the ethyl acetate treatment produced a porous topography. The methyl methacrylate and ethyl acetate surface treatment protocols improved the adhesion of a silicone-based resilient denture liner to poly(methyl methacrylate).

The wear resistance of denture teeth is important to the longevity of removable prostheses of edentulous patients. The ability of denture teeth to maintain a stable occlusal relationship over time may be influenced by this property. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the wear resistance of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture teeth based on their chemical composition when opposed by a ceramic antagonist. The maxillary canines (n=10) of 3 PMMA denture teeth (Trubyte Biotone, cross-linked PMMA; Trilux, highly cross-linked IPN (interpenetrating polymer network)-PMMA; and Vivodent, highly cross-linked PMMA) were secured in an in vitro 2-body wear-testing apparatus that produced sliding contact of the specimens (4.5 cycles/s, sliding distance of 20 mm, under 37°C running water) against glazed or airborne particle abraded ceramic. Wear resistance was measured as height loss (mm) under 300 g (sliding force) after 100,000 cycles, using a digital measuring microscope. Mean values were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (a=0.05). The wear of Trubyte Biotone (0.93 ± 0.14 mm) was significantly higher than that of both other types of teeth tested against abraded ceramic (p<0.05). The Vivodent tooth (0.64 ± 0.17 mm) exhibited the best wear resistance among the denture teeth tested against airborne particle abraded ceramic. There were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) in wear among the 3 denture teeth evaluated against glazed ceramic. Trilux and Vivodent teeth tested against either glazed or airborne particle abraded ceramic did not differ significantly from each other (p<0.05). All teeth showed significantly more wear against airborne particle abraded ceramic than against glazed ceramic (p<0.05). In conclusion, the three types of PMMA denture teeth presented significantly different wear resistance against the abraded ceramic. The high-strength PMMA denture teeth were more wear-resistant than the conventional PMMA denture tooth.

This work investigates the influence of the addition of cerium (IV) ions on the anticorrosion properties of organic-inorganic hybrid coatings applied to passivated tin coated steel. In order to evaluate the specific effect of cerium (IV) addition on nanostructural features of the organic and inorganic phases of the hybrid coating, the hydrolytic polycondensation of silicon alkoxide and the radical polymerization of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) function were induced separately. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated by means of linear polarization, Tafel type curves and electrochemical impedance measurements. The impedance results obtained for the hybrid coatings were discussed based on an electrical equivalent circuit used to fit the experimental data. The electrochemical results clearly showed the improvement of the protective properties of the organic-inorganic hybrid coating mainly when the cerium (IV) was added to the organic phase solution precursor, which seemed to be due to the formation of a more uniform and densely reticulated siloxane-PMMA film. The properties of the hydrogen-bonded polymer blends of poly(4-vinylphenol) and poly(2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate) are presented. Spectroscopic techniques such as C-13 solid-state NMR and FT-IR are used to probe specific interactions of the blends at various compositions. Spectral features from both techniques revealed that site-specific interactions are present, consistent with a significant degree of mixing of the blend components. Changes in chemical shift and line shape of the phenolic carbon and carbonyl resonances in the C-13 CPMAS spectra of the blends as a function of composition are interpreted as resulting from changes in the relative intensities of two closely overlapped signals. A quantitative measure of hydrogen-bonded carbonyl groups using C-13 NMR has been obtained which agreed well with the results from FT-IR analyses. It is also shown that C-13 NMR can be used to measure the fraction of hydroxyl groups associated with carbonyl groups, which was not possible previously using FT-IR due to extensive overlapping of bands in the hydroxyl stretching region. The results of measurements of H-1 T-1 and 1H T-1 rho indicate that PVPh and PEEMA are intimately mixed on a scale less than 2-3 nm.

Polymer hydrogels based upon methacrylates are used extensively in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly as controlled release drug delivery systems. These materials are generally prepared by chemically initiated polymerization, but this can lead to the presence of unwanted initiator fragments in the polymer matrix. In the present work, initiation of polymerization by gamma-irradiation of hydroxyethyl methacrylate, with and without added crosslinkers, has been investigated, and the diffusion coefficients for water in the resulting polymers have been measured through mass uptake by the polymers. The diffusion of water in poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) at 310 K was found to be Fickian, with a diffusion coefficient of 1.96 +/- 0.1 x 10(11) m(2) s(-1) and an equilibrium water content of 58%, NMR imaging analyses confirmed the adherance to a Fickian model of the diffusion of water into polymer cylinders. The incorporation of small amounts (0.2-0.5 wt%) of added ethyleneglycol-dimethacrylate-based crosslinkers was found to have only a small effect on the diffusion coefficient and the equilibrium water content for the copolymers. The bulk free radical copolymerizations of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) with n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) or cyclohexyl methacrylate (CHMA) were studied over the composition mole fraction interval of 0-1 for HEMA in the monomer feed. The C-13 NMR (125 MHz) spectra of the copolymers were analysed to determine the copolymer composition and the stereochemical configuration of the copolymers. The terminal model reactivity ratios of HEMA and BMA were found to be r(HEMA) = 1.73 and r(BMA) = 0.65 and for HEMA and CHMA, r(HEMA) = 1.26 and r(CHMA) = 0.31. The BMA and CHMA homopolymers were found to be predominantly syndiotactic with isotacticity parameters of theta(BB) = 0.18 and theta(CC) = 0.19, respectively. The copolymers were also found to be predominantly syndiotactic, indicating a strong tendency for racemic additions of the monomers in the formation of the copolymers. The diffusion of water into cylinders of poly(HEMA-co-BMA) and poly(HEMA-co-CHMA) was studied over a range of copolymer compositions and was found to be Fickian. The diffusion coefficients of water at 37 degrees C were determined from swelling measurements and were found to vary from 1.72 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for polyHEMA to 0.97 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for poly(HEMA-co-BMA) having a mole fraction F-HEMA = 0.80 and to 0.91 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for a poly(HEMA-co-CHMA) also having F-HEMA = 0.80. The mass of water absorbed at equilibrium relative to the mass of dry polymer varied from 58.8 for polyHEMA to 27.2% for poly(HEMA-co-BMA) having F-HEMA = 0.85 and to 21.3% for poly(HEMA-co-CHMA) having F-HEMA = 0.80. 0Nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) imaging was used to study the ingress of water into poly(tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate-co-hydroxyethyl methacrylate). The study offers strong evidence that the diffusion is Fickian in nature. The diffusion coefficient, D, obtained by fitting the underlying diffusion profile, attainable from the images, according to the equation for Fickian diffusion, is 1.5 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1), which is in good correlation with the value of 2.1 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1), obtained from mass uptake measurements. Additionally, from the T-2-weighted images, Superimposed features observed in addition to the underlying Fickian diffusion profiles were shown to have a longer spin-spin relaxation time, T-2. This Suggests the presence of two types of water within the polymer matrix; a less mobile phase of absorbed water that is interacting strongly with the polymer matrix and a more mobile phase of absorbed water residing within the cracks observed in the environmental scanning electron micrograph. Introduction: This study assessed in vitro the physicochemical properties of 2 methacrylate resin-based sealers (Epiphany SE and Hybrid Root SEAL), comparing the results with a well-established epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus). Methods: Five samples of each material were used for each test (setting time, flow, radiopacity, dimensional change after setting, and solubility) according to American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA) Specification 57. The samples were assigned to 3 groups: I, AH Plus; II, Epiphany SE; and III, Hybrid Root SEAL. The distilled and deionized water used at the solubility test was submitted to atomic absorption spectrometry to observe the presence of Ca2+, K+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ ions. In addition, the surface morphology of the specimens was analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistical analysis was performed by using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey-Kramer test (P < .05). Results: Flow, radiopacity, and solubility of all sealers were in accordance with ANSI/ADA. The setting time of Hybrid Root SEAL did not agree with ANSUADA requirements. The dimensional change of all sealers was greater than the values considered acceptable by ANSI/ADA. The spectrometry analysis showed significant Ca2+ ions release for AH Plus. In SEM analysis, Hybrid Root SEAL presented spherical monomers with inferior size than AH Plus and Epiphany SE. Conclusions: It might be concluded that physicochemical properties of the tested sealers conformed to ANSI/ADA (2000) standardization, except for the setting time of Hybrid Root SEAL and the dimensional change of all sealers, which did not fulfill the ANSI/ADA requirements. P>Aim To assess the push-out strength of Epiphany SE, Epiphany and Hybrid Root SEAL to the dentine walls of root canals. Methodology Sixty roots of canines were prepared and distributed to six groups (n = 10) according to the filling material: GI - Epiphany SE, GII - Epiphany primer and sealer, GIII - Epiphany primer, sealer and resinous solvent, GIV - Clearfil DC Bond and Epiphany sealer, GV - Clearfil, Epiphany sealer and solvent and GVI - Hybrid Root SEAL. Resilon cones were used in all groups. Roots were sectioned transversally to obtain three slices from each third. One slice was subjected to the push-out test (MPa), and results were analysed by anova and Tukey`s test (P < 0.05). The other two slices were prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Failure mode was also analysed. Results A statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) occurred between Hybrid Root SEAL (5.27 +/- 2.07) and the other materials, GI (0.40 +/- 0.23), GII (0.78 +/- 0.45), GIII (0.57 +/- 0.28), GIV (0.40 +/- 0.24) and GV (0.50 +/- 0.41), which did not differ significantly from each other (P > 0.05). Adhesive failures predominated in groups I, II, IV and V, whilst mixed and cohesive failures were the most frequent in groups III and VI, respectively. There were gaps in the adhesive interface of GI and GII, continuity areas of the filling material with dentine in GIV and GV and good adaptation of the interface of GVI. Conclusion Hybrid Root SEAL had greater push-out strength to root canal dentine than Epiphany SE and Epiphany. The use of primer, solvent and adhesive system did not influence the adhesion of Epiphany.
