The electrochemical reactivity of catechol-derived adlayers is reported at platinum (Pt) single-crystal electrodes. Pt(111) and stepped vicinal surfaces are used as model surfaces possessing well-ordered nanometer-sized Pt(111) terraces ranging from 0.4 to 12 nm. The electrochemical experiments were designed to probe how the control of monatomic step-density and of atomic-level step structure can be used to modulate molecule–molecule interactions during self-assembly of aromatic-derived organic monolayers at metallic single-crystal electrode surfaces. A hard sphere model of surfaces and a simplified band formation model are used as a theoretical framework for interpretation of experimental results. The experimental results reveal (i) that supramolecular electrochemical effects may be confined, propagated, or modulated by the choice of atomic level crystallographic features (i.e.monatomic steps), deliberately introduced at metallic substrate surfaces, suggesting (ii) that substrate-defect engineering may be used to tune the macroscopic electronic properties of aromatic molecular adlayers and of smaller molecular aggregates.

The mutual influence of surface geometry (e.g. lattice parameters, morphology) and electronic structure is discussed for Cu-Ni bimetallic (111) surfaces. It is found that on flat surfaces the electronic d-states of the adlayer experience very little influence from the substrate electronic structure which is due to their large separation in binding energies and the close match of Cu and Ni lattice constants. Using carbon monoxide and benzene as probe molecules, it is found that in most cases the reactivity of Cu or Ni adlayers is very similar to the corresponding (111) single crystal surfaces. Exceptions are the adsorption of CO on submonolayers of Cu on Ni(111) and the dissociation of benzene on Ni/Cu(111) which is very different from Ni(111). These differences are related to geometric factors influencing the adsorption on these surfaces.

The adsorption of water on a model hexagonal surface has been studied using accurate intermolecular potentials. The structure and binding energies of single molecules, clusters, and adlayers are obtained. The limiting case of weak, nondirectional surface-water interactions presented here is compared with other cases involving water-water and water-surface interactions of a similar magnitude (partial templating) and dominating water-surface interactions (perfect templating) from the literature. None of these models is conducive to the nucleation of ice, each for different reasons.Wecommenton the requirements for a good ice-nucleating surface.

Understanding the origin of the properties of metal-supported metal thin films is important for the rational design of bimetallic catalysts and other applications, but it is generally difficult to separate effects related to strain from those arising from interface interactions. Here we use density functional (DFT) theory to examine the structure and electronic behavior of few-layer palladium films on the rhenium (0001) surface, where there is negligible interfacial strain and therefore other effects can be isolated. Our DFT calculations predict stacking sequences and interlayer separations in excellent agreement with quantitative low-energy electron diffraction experiments. By theoretically simulating the Pd core-level X-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) of the films, we are able to interpret and assign the basic features of both low-resolution and high-resolution XPS measurements. The core levels at the interface shift to more negative energies, rigidly following the shifts in the same direction of the valence d-band center. We demonstrate that the valence band shift at the interface is caused by charge transfer from Re to Pd, which occurs mainly to valence states of hybridized s-p character rather than to the Pd d-band. Since the d-band filling is roughly constant, there is a correlation between the d-band center shift and its bandwidth. The resulting effect of this charge transfer on the valence d-band is thus analogous to the application of a lateral compressive strain on the adlayers. Our analysis suggests that charge transfer should be considered when describing the origin of core and valence band shifts in other metal / metal adlayer systems.

Nitrate reduction on palladium multilayers deposited on platinum single crystal electrodes was studied by cyclic voltammetry and FTIR spectroscopy in acid and alkaline media. The results are compared with those obtained with bulk palladium single crystals. The reaction is sensitive to the electrode surface structure, the reactivity depending on the solution pH. In acid solution nitrate was reduced at potentials below the potential of zero total charge (pztc), when the electrode is negatively charged. Competition between nitrate, hydrogen and anion adsorption and NO formation and accumulation at the surface are proposed as the main reasons for the slow reaction rate. On the bulk palladium single crystal electrodes, NO formation leads to a fast blockage of the surface resulting in a very low activity for nitrate reduction. In alkaline solution, nitrate is reduced at more positive potentials with significantly higher current being measured on the Pd multilayer on Pt(100) electrode. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Reduction of nitrate on palladium-modified platinum single-crystal electrodes has been investigated both voltammetrically and spectroscopically in acidic media (pH = 1). Results obtained in H2O and D2O solvents are compared for the three crystallographic orientations. FTIR and differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) results clearly indicate that the isotopic substitution of the solvent has a large effect in the mechanism of the reaction, changing the nature of the detected products. For Pt(111)/Pd and Pt(100)/Pd, N2O is detected as the main product of nitrate reduction when D2O is used as solvent, while no N2O is detected when the reaction is performed in H2O. For Pt(110)/Pd, N2O is detected in both solvents, although the use of D2O clearly favours the preferential formation of this product. The magnitude of voltammetric currents is also affected by the nature of the solvent. This has been analysed considering, in addition to the different product distribution, the existence of different transport numbers and optical constants of the solvent.

This work covers the synthesis of second-generation, ethylene glycol dendrons covalently linked to a surface anchor that contains two, three, or four catechol groups, the molecular assembly in aqueous buffer on titanium oxide surfaces, and the evaluation of the resistance of the monomolecular adlayers against nonspecific protein adsorption in contact with full blood serum. The results were compared to those of a linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) analogue with the same molecular weight. The adsorption kinetics as well as resulting surface coverages were monitored by ex situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE), in situ optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS), and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) investigations. The expected compositions of the macromolecular films were verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of the adsorption study, performed in a high ionic strength ("cloud-point") buffer at room temperature, demonstrate that the adsorption kinetics increase with increasing number of catechol binding moieties and exceed the values found for the linear PEG analogue. This is attributed to the comparatively smaller and more confined molecular volume of the dendritic macromolecules in solution, the improved presentation of the catechol anchor, and/or their much lower cloud-point in the chosen buffer (close to room temperature). Interestingly, in terms of mechanistic aspects of "nonfouling" surface properties, the dendron films were found to be much stiffer and considerably less hydrated in comparison to the linear PEG brush surface, closer in their physicochemical properties to oligo(ethylene glycol) alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers than to conventional brush surfaces. Despite these differences, both types of polymer architectures at saturation coverage proved to be highly resistant toward protein adsorption. Although associated with higher synthesis costs, dendritic macromolecules are considered to be an attractive alternative to linear polymers for surface (bio)functionalization in view of their spontaneous formation of ultrathin, confluent, and nonfouling monolayers at room temperature and their outstanding ability to present functional ligands (coupled to the termini of the dendritic structure) at high surface densities.

The self-assembly and redox-properties of two viologen derivatives, N-hexyl-N-(6-thiohexyl)-4,4-bipyridinium bromide (HS-6V6-H) and N,N-bis(6-thiohexyl)-4,4-bipyridinium bromide (HS-6V6-SH), immobilized on Au(111)-(1x1) macro-electrodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, surface enhanced infrared spectroscopy (SEIRAS) and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Depending on the assembly conditions one could distinguish three different types of adlayers for both viologens: a low coverage disordered and an ordered striped phase of flat oriented molecules as well as a high coverage monolayer composed of tilted viologen moieties. Both molecules, HS-6V6-H and HS-6V6-SH, were successfully immobilized on Au(poly) nano-electrodes, which gave a well-defined redox-response in the lower pA–current range. An in situ STM configuration was employed to explore electron transport properties of single molecule junctions Au(T)|HS-6V6-SH(HS-6V6-H)|Au(S). The observed sigmoidal potential dependence, measured at variable substrate potential ES and at constant bias voltage (ET–ES), was attributed to electronic structure changes of the viologen moiety during the one-electron reduction/re-oxidation process V2+ V+. Tunneling experiments in asymmetric, STM-based junctions Au(T)-S-6V6-H|Au(S) revealed current (iT)–voltage (ET) curves with a maximum located at the equilibrium potential of the redox-process V2+ V+. The experimental iT–ET characteristics of the HS-6V6-H–modified tunneling junction were tentatively attributed to a sequential two-step electron transfer mechanism.

The bioelectrocatalytic (oxygen reduction reaction, ORR) properties of the multicopper oxidase CueO immobilized on gold electrodes were investigated. Macroscopic electrochemical techniques were combined with in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy at the ensemble and at the single-molecule level. Self-assembled monolayer of mercaptopropionic acid, cysteamine, and p-aminothiophenol were chosen as redox mediators. The highest ORR activity was observed for the protein attached to amino-terminated adlayers. In situ STM experiments revealed that the presence of oxygen causes distinct structure and electronic changes in the metallic centers of the enzyme, which determine the rate of intramolecular electron transfer and, consequently, affect the rate of electron tunneling through the protein. Complementary Raman spectroscopy experiments provided access for monitoring structural changes in the redox state of the type 1 copper center of the immobilized enzyme during the CueO-catalyzed oxygen reduction cycle. These results unequivocally demonstrate the existence of a direct electronic communication between the electrode substrate and the type 1 copper center.

The adsorption of nitric oxide (NO) on a Pt (111) surface modified with irreversible adsorbed bismuth adatoms is reported. While the voltammetric results reveal a close interaction between the two co-adsorbed compounds. In-situ infrared spectroscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy indicate the formation of segregated adlayers. Formation of compressed Bi adlayers with modified redox properties is proposed to reconcile both results. This agrees with the observation of Bi islands in the STM images when NO is coadsorbed, not observed in the absence of NO.

An alkali- and nitrate-free hydrotalcite coating has been grafted onto the surface of a hierarchically ordered macroporous-mesoporous SBA-15 template via stepwise growth of conformal alumina adlayers and their subsequent reaction with magnesium methoxide. The resulting low dimensional hydrotalcite crystallites exhibit excellent per site activity for the base catalysed transesterification of glyceryl triolein with methanol for FAME production.

In order to deepen the knowledge about the origin of the CO preoxidation process and the intrinsic catalytic activity of Pt superficial steps toward CO oxidation, a series of CO stripping experiments were performed on stepped Pt electrodes in acidic medium. For the occurrence of CO preoxidation, it was found that it arises (reproducibly) whenever four interconnected conditions are simultaneously fulfilled: (1) CO adsorption at potentials lower than about 0.2 V; (2) on surfaces saturated with COads; (3) in the presence of traces of CO in solution; (4) in the presence of surface steps. If any of these four conditions is not satisfied, the CO preoxidation pathway does not appear, even though the steps on the electrode surface are completely covered by CO. By controlling the removal of the CO adlayer (voltammetrically), we show that once the CO adlayer has been partially oxidized, the (111) terrace sites of stepped surfaces are released earlier than the (110) step sites. Moreover, if (110) steps are selectively decorated with CO, its oxidation occurs only at potentials ∼150 mV higher than the CO preoxidation peak. Our results systematically demonstrate that step sites are less active to oxidize CO than those ones responsible for the CO preoxidation process. Once the sites responsible for the CO preoxidation are made free, there is no apparent motion of the remaining adsorbed CO layer, suggesting that the activation of the surface controls the whole process, rather than the diffusion of COads toward hypothetically “most active sites”. Voltammetric and chronoamperometric experiments performed on partially covered CO adlayers suggest that adsorbed CO behave as a motionless species during its oxidation, in which the CO adlayer is removed piece by piece. By means of in situ FTIR experiments, the stretching frequency of CO selectively adsorbed on (110) step sites was examined. Band frequency results confirm that those molecules adsorbed on steps are fully coupled with the adsorbed CO on (111) terraces when the surface reaches full coverage.
