Input-orientated data envelopment analysis framework for measuring and decomposing economic, environmental and ecological efficiency : an application to OECD agriculture

This paper presents an input-orientated data envelopment analysis (DEA) framework which allows the measurement and decomposition of economic, environmental and ecological efficiency levels in agricultural production across different countries. Economic, environmental and ecological optimisations search for optimal input combinations that minimise total costs, total amount of nutrients, and total amount of cumulative exergy contained in inputs respectively. The application of the framework to an agricultural dataset of 30 OECD countries revealed that (i) there was significant scope to make their agricultural production systemsmore environmentally and ecologically sustainable; (ii) the improvement in the environmental and ecological sustainability could be achieved by being more technically efficient and, even more significantly, by changing the input combinations; (iii) the rankings of sustainability varied significantly across OECD countries within frontier-based environmental and ecological efficiency measures and between frontier-based measures and indicators.

Psychological symptoms : a review of screening practices for patients with coronary heart disease (CHD)

Background/Aims: Coronary heart disease (CHD) and coronary events have been strongly linked to psychological symptoms in patients during hospitalisation and post-discharge. Within Australia CHD average length of stay is decreasing and symptoms often do not present until discharge. Early screening and treatment of psychological symptoms has been recommended to reduce mortality and identify anxiety and depression. This literature review was undertaken to evaluate and describe current screening practices to identify psychological symptoms in these patients.

DNA markers linked to the R(2) rust resistance gene in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) facilitate anticipatory breeding for this disease variant.

Pre-emptive breeding for host disease resistance is an effective strategy for combating and managing devastating incursions of plant pathogens. Comprehensive, long-term studies have revealed that virulence to the R (2) sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) rust resistance gene in the line MC29 does not exist in the Australian rust (Puccinia helianthi) population. We report in this study the identification of molecular markers linked to this gene. The three simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers ORS795, ORS882, and ORS938 were linked in coupling to the gene, while the SSR marker ORS333 was linked in repulsion. Reliable selection for homozygous-resistant individuals was efficient when the three markers, ORS795, ORS882, and ORS333, were used in combination. Phenotyping for this resistance gene is not possible in Australia without introducing a quarantinable race of the pathogen. Therefore, the availability of reliable and heritable DNA-based markers will enable the efficient deployment of this gene, permitting a more effective strategy for generating sustainable commercial cultivars containing this rust resistance gene.

Estudio del comportamiento de nueve lineas promisorias de arroz (Oryza sativa L) en comparación con dos variedades comerciales en el agroecosistema de secano favorecido

El siguiente trabajo se realizó en los terrenos de la Cooperativa Democrática "El Viejo", ubicada en el municipio de El Viejo; se evaluaron nueve lineas promisorias de arroz en una Prueba Preliminar de Rendimiento. Se utilizó un diseño experimental de Bloques Completos al Azar con cuatro repeticiones, el ensayo se estableció en condiciones de secano favorecido, con el método de siembra a chorrillo, por lo que el Programa de Validación Tecnológica (P.V.T) de la Asociación Nicaragüense de Arroceros (A.N.A.R.), inició el presente trabajo para evaluar los materiales genéticos ECIA y C.T. Los materiales ECIA procedentes de Cuba y los materiales IG y CT originarios del Centro Internacional de agricultura Tropical , Cali Colombia. Los datos cuantitativos se analizaron con el programa MSTAC, aplicándoles análisis de varianza (ANOVA), con sus respectivas pruebas de medias. En base a los resultados obtenidos en las evaluaciones de las características agronónúcas, componentes del rendimiento y adaptabilidad a la zona de secano, se realizaron los análisis, de las nueve lineas promisorias de arroz de las cuales se seleccionaron las líneas ECIA 31-6066, la ECIA 2l3-F4-A-153, la ECIA 382-4-2-J-6 y la CT- 9506-18-11P-2PT, además que en la selección de estas líneas se tomaron en cuenta todas las variables medidas, tanto las cuantitativas como las cualitativas, o sea que se seleccionaron aquellas que presentaron comportamiento de manera integral, las cuales seguirán siendo estudiada; para luego ser evaluadas en prueba de adaptación regional.

Ultrafast electronic excitation in CaF2 crystals

A new pump and probe experimental system was developed, the pump pulse duration of which is stretched and is much longer than that of the probe pulse. Using this system, time-resolved electronic excitation processes and damage mechanisms in CaF2 crystals were studied. The measured reflectivity of the probe pulse begins to increase at the peak of the pump pulse and increases rapidly in the latter half of the pump pulse, when the pump pulse duration is stretched to 580fs. Our experimental results indicate that both multiphoton ionization and impact ionization play important roles in the generation of conduction band electrons, at least they do so when the pump pulse durations are equal to or longer than 580fs.

Snail control by fish: an explanation for its failure

Systematic studies on the performance of fish as snail eaters in waterbodies are rare. Here, trials with a promising African cichlid (Astatoreochromis alluaudi) revealed that the fish were only successful at reducing snail populations if there was nothing better to eat - and this is hardly the case. The fish need solid jaws to crush the snails but do not develop such jaws if they can find other, preferables foods. The prospects for this form of control are also discussed in the broader context.

A posse do art. 1276 do CC como forma de aquisição da propriedade imóvel

De inegável relevância na vida humana, a posse se configura como um dos temas mais controvertidos no âmbito do Direito Civil. Em todos os seus contornos e características, incluindo sua natureza jurídica, terminologia, efeitos e classificações, observamos um debate acirrado e polêmico a seu respeito, o que demonstra o firme interesse dos estudiosos sobre a possessio através dos séculos. Ademais, compete ao aplicador do Direito compreender o fenômeno possessório a partir das premissas e valores constitucionais fundamentais, em especial o princípio da dignidade da pessoa humana, levando em consideração as mutações sociais e a realidade dos fatos, para que seja possível extrair do ordenamento caminhos efetivos à concretização de uma sociedade justa e solidária, a fim de erradicar a pobreza e diminuir as desigualdades sociais. Neste contexto, de forma prospectiva e adequando os conceitos civilistas à Carta da República, defendemos a aplicação do artigo 1276 do Código Civil também em benefício do ocupante qualificado de imóvel abandonado, de modo a consolidar o domínio em seu favor no mesmo triênio conferido à Administração Pública, garantindo-se então aos menos favorecidos o legítimo acesso à moradia e ao trabalho. Na medida em que o ser humano se constitui no foco de atenção, preocupação e proteção do ordenamento jurídico acreditamos que as exegeses normativas devem concretizar o disposto no artigo 1, inciso III, da Constituição da República, razão pela qual a posse de outrem exercida ininterruptamente sobre bem abandonado merece funcionar como forma de aquisição originária da propriedade imóvel privada no lapso de tempo estatuído no artigo 1276 do Código Civil.

Residual plastids of bleached mutants of Euglena gracilis and their effects on the expression of nucleus-encoded genes

Bleached mutants of Euglena gracilis were obtained by treatment with ofloxacin (Ofl) and streptomycin (Sm) respectively. As shown by electron microscopy, the residual plastids contain prothylakoids in an Ofl mutant, and the highly developed and tightly stacked membranous structure found in cells of two Sm, mutants. Nine genes of the plastid genome were examined with PCR, showing that ribosomal protein genes and most other plastid genes were lost in all but one Sm mutant. Using differential display and RT-PCR, it was shown that chloroplast degeneration could cause changes in transcription of certain nucleus-encoded genes during heterotrophic growth in darkness.

Characterization of an iridovirus from the cultured pig frog Rana grylio with lethal syndrome

Three virus isolates, RGV-9506, RGV-9807 and RGV-9808, were obtained from cultured pig frogs Rana grylio undergoing lethal infections. Previously, the first isolate, RGV-9506, was shown to be an iridovirus based on ultrastructural and morphological studies. In the present study, the original isolate, along with 2 recent ones, were more extensively characterized by experimental infection studies, histopathology, electron microscopy, serological reactivity, gel electrophoresis of viral polypeptides and DNA restriction fragments, PCR amplification, and nucleic acid sequence analysis of the major capsid protein (MCP) gene. The 3 isolates were shown to be identical to each other, and very similar to FV3, the type species of the genus Ranavirus (family Iridoviridae). These results suggest that RGV should be considered a strain of FV3, and indicate that FV3-like iridoviruses are capable of causing widespread, severe disease among cultured frogs.

Effect of incorporating nonlanthanoidal indium on optical properties of ferroelectric Bi4Ti3O12 thin films

Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO) and Bi3.25In0.75Ti3O12 (BTO:In) thin films were prepared on fused quartz and LaNiO3/Si (LNO) substrates by chemical solution deposition (CSD). Their microstructures, ferroelectric and optical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, ferroelectric tester and UV-visible-NIR spectrophotometer, respectively. The optical band-gaps of the films were found to be 3.64 and 3.45 eV for the BTO and BTO:In films, respectively. Optical constants (refractive indexes and extinction coefficients) were determined from the optical transmittance spectra using the envelope method. Following the single electronic oscillator model, the single oscillator energy E-0, the dispersion energy E-d, the average interband oscillator wavelength lambda(0), the average oscillator strength S-0, the refractive index dispersion parameter (E-0/S-0), the chemical bonding quantity beta, and the long wavelength refractive index n(infinity) were obtained and analyzed. Both the refractive index and extinction coefficient of the BTO:In films are smaller than those of the BTO films. Furthermore, the refractive index dispersion parameter (E-0/S-0) increases and the chemical bonding quantity beta decreases in the BTO and BTO:In films compared with those of bulk. Frequency mixing and phase detection functionalities of three-terminal ballistic junctions

Three-terminal ballistic junctions (TBJs) are fabricated from a high-mobility InP/In0.75Ga0.25As heterostructure by electron-beam lithography. The voltage output from the central branch is measured as a function of the voltages applied to the left and right branches of the TBJs. The measurements show that the TBJs possess an intrinsic nonlinearity. Based on this nonlinearity, a novel room-temperature functional frequency mixer and phase detector are realized. The TBJ frequency mixer and phase detector are expected to have advantages over traditional circuits in terms of simple structure, small size and high speed, and can be used as a new type of building block in nanoelectronics.
