This study investigates the landscape evolution and soil development in the loess area near Regensburg between approximately 6000-2000 yr BP (radiocarbon years), Eastern Bavaria. The focus is on the question how man and climate influenced landscape evolution and what their relative significance was. The theoretical background concerning the factors that controlled prehistoric soil erosion in Middle Europe is summarized with respect to rainfall intensity and distribution, pedogenesis, Pleistocene relief, and prehistoric farming. Colluvial deposits , flood loams, and soils were studied at ten different and representative sites that served as archives of their respective palaeoenvironments. Geomorphological, sedimentological, and pedological methods were applied. According to the findings presented here, there was a high asynchronity of landscape evolution in the investigation area, which was due to prehistoric land-use patterns. Prehistoric land use and settlement caused highly difIerenciated phases of morphodynamic activity and stability in time and space. These are documented at the single catenas ofeach site. In general, Pleistocene relief was substantially lowered. At the same time smaller landforms such as dells and minor asymmetric valleys filled up and strongly transformed. However, there were short phases at many sites, forming short lived linear erosion features ('Runsen'), resulting from exceptional rainfalls. These forms are results of single events without showing regional trends. Generally, the onset of the sedimentation of colluvial deposits took place much earlier (usually 3500 yr BP (radiocarbon) and younger) than the formation of flood loams. Thus, the deposition of flood loams in the Kleine Laaber river valley started mainly as a consequence of iron age farming only at around 2500 yr BP (radiocarbon). A cascade system explains the different ages of colluvial deposits and flood loams: as a result of prehistoric land use, dells and other minor Pleistocene landforms were filled with colluvial sediments. After the filling of these primary sediment traps , eroded material was transported into flood plains, thus forming flood loams. But at the moment we cannot quantify the extent ofprehistoric soil erosion in the investigation area. The three factors that controlled the prehistoric Iandscapc evolution in the Ioess area near Regensburg are as follows: 1. The transformation from a natural to a prehistoric cultural landscape was the most important factor: A landscape with stable relief was changed into a highly morphodynamic one with soil erosion as the dominant process of this change. 2. The sediment traps of the pre-anthropogenic relief determined where the material originated from soil erosion was deposited: either sedimentation took place on the slopes or the filled sediment traps of the slopes rendered flood loam formation possible. Climatic influence of any importance can only be documented as the result of land use in connection with singular and/or statistic events of heavy rainfalls. Without human impact, no significant change in the Holocene landscape would have been possible.

Käsikirjoitus Thott 304,2 on esimerkki epätyypillisestä myöhäiskeskiaikaisesta maallikkomesenaattiudesta Englannissa. Liitteeksi olen laatinut sanaston helpottamaan kommentaarin tulkitsemista.

Processing maps for hot working of as-cast and wrought stainless steels of type AISI 304 have been developed in the temperature range 600 to 1250°C and strain rate range 0.001 to 100 s−1. The domain of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in as-cast material occurs at higher temperatures (1250°C) and lower strain rates (0.001 s−1) than in the wrought steel (1100°C and 0.01 s−1). The effect is explained in terms of enhanced nucleation rate of DRX due to the carbide, ferrite particles, stable oxides/nitrides and second-phase intermetallics in the as-cast microstructure. The DRX domain is wider in the wrought material although the peak efficiency is less (32%) than in the as-cast case (40%). The flow instability regime is not significantly affected by the initial microstructure

The influence of strain rate and state-of-stress on the formation of ferrite in stainless steel type AISI 304L, 304 and 304 as-cast, during hot working has been studied. Compression and torsion tests were conducted in the temperature range 1100 to 1250 degrees C and strain rate range 0.001 to 100 s(-1) on these materials, Ferrite formation occurs during deformation at temperatures above 1150 degrees C and strain rates above 10 s(-1), in stainless steel type AISI 304L and 304. The tendency for the formation of ferrite is more in as-cast 304 than in wrought 304, In as-cast 304 the ferrite forms at lower temperatures and strain rates, The tendency for the ferrite formation is more in torsion than in compression.

The deformation characteristics of stainless steel type AISI 3O4 under compression in the temperature range 20 degrees C to 600 degrees C and strain-rate range 0.001 to 100 s(-1) have been studied with a view to characterizing the flow instabilities occurring in the microstructure. At strain rates less than 5 s(-1), 304 stainless steel exhibits flow localization, whereas dynamic strain aging occurs at intermediate temperatures and below 0.5 s(-1). At room temperatures and strain rates less than 10 s(-1), martensite formation is observed. To avoid the preceding microstructural instabilities, cold and warm working should be carried out at strain rates greater than 5 s(-1). The continuum criterion, developed on the basis of the principles of maximum rate of entropy production and separability of the dissipation function, predicts accurately all the preceding instability features.

The domain of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in as-cast 304 stainless steel material occurs at higher temperatures (1250 degrees C) and lower strain rates (0.001 s(-1)) than in wrought 304 stainless steel (1100 degrees C and 0.01 s(-1)). The above result has been explained earlier on the basis of a simple theoretical DRX model involving the rate of nucleation versus rate of grain boundary migration. The present investigation is aimed at examining experimentally the influence of carbide particles on the DRX of ascast 304 using secondary ion mass spectrometric (SIMS) analysis. Isothermal compression tests at a constant true strain rate have been performed on wrought 304 and as-cast 304 materials in the temperature and strain rate ranges of 1000 to 1250 degrees C and 0.001 to 1 s(-1) respectively. The SIMS analysis carried out on the deformed samples revealed that the large carbides present in the as-cast 304 material strongly influence the DRX process. In as-cast 304 material, the presence of large carbide particles in the microstructure shifts the DRX domain to higher temperature and lower strain rate in comparison with wrought 304 material.

The deformation characteristics of as-cast 304 stainless steel under compression in the temperature range 20-600 degrees C and strain rate range 0.001-100 s(-1) have been studied with a view to characterizing the flow instabilities occurring in the microstructure. Ar strain rates of less than 0.05 s(-1), as-cast 304 stainless steel exhibits flow localization in the temperature range 20-600 degrees C, whereas dynamic strain ageing occurs at intermediate temperatures and below 5 s(-1). At room temperatures and strain rates of less than 0.05 s(-1), martensite formation is observed. To avoid the above microstructural instabilities warm working should be carried out at strain rates greater than 10 s(-1) in the temperature range 400-600 degrees C and cold working could be done in the range of about 0.05-0.8 s(-1). The continuum criterion developed on the basis of the principles of maximum rate of entropy production and separability of the dissipation function, predicts accurately all of the above instability features. Dynamics of I*(P-2(1/2)) formation from CH2ICl dissociation has-been investigated at five different ultraviolet excitation wavelengths, e.g., 222, 236, 266, 280, and similar to304 nm. The quantum yield of I*((2)p(1/2)) production, phi*, has been measured by monitoring nascent I(P-2(3/2)) and I* concentrations using a resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization detection scheme. The measured quantum yield as a function of excitation energy follows the same trend as that of methyl iodide except at 236 run. The photodissociation dynamics of CH2ICl also involves three upper states similar to methyl iodide, and a qualitative correlation diagram has been constructed to account for the observed quantum yield. From the difference in behavior at 236 nm, it appears that the crossing region between the two excited states ((3)Q(0) and (1)Q(1)) is located near the exit valley away from the Franck Condon excitation region. The B- and C-band transitions do not participate in the dynamics, and the perturbation of the methyl iodide states due to Cl-I interaction is relatively weak at the photolysis wavelengths employed in this investigation.

The high-temperature oxidation behavior of modified 304 austenitic stainless steels in a water vapor atmosphere was investigated. Samples were prepared by various thermo mechanical treatments to result in different grain sizes in the range 8-30 mu m. Similar I 3 pound grain boundary fraction was achieved to eliminate any grain-boundary characteristics effect. Samples were oxidized in an air furnace at 700 A degrees C with 20 % water vapor atmosphere. On the fine-grained sample, a uniform Cr2O3 layer was formed, which increased the overall oxidation resistance. Whereas on the coarse-grained sample, an additional Fe2O3 layer formed on the Cr-rich oxide layer, which resulted in a relatively high oxidation rate. In the fine-grained sample, grain boundaries act as rapid diffusion paths for Cr and provided enough Cr to form Cr2O3 oxide on the entire sample surface.
