Caracterización de la fuente de neutrones (Am-Be) del GFR - UAB

La presente memoria describe el trabajo llevado a cabo en el GFR (Grup de Física de les Radiacions) de la UAB para caracterizar y hacer aprovechable la fuente de neutrones de 241Am-Be de 1 Ci de actividad que se encuentra en el laboratorio de radiaciones.

Nivells de radó en recintes tancats de la zona volcànica de la Garrotxa i la falla d'Amer

La importància radiològica i geofísica del gas radó, un gas radioactiu que neix de la desintegració del radi present a l’escorça terrestre, ha motivat una extensa campanya de mesures d’aquest gas a l’interior de recintes tancats de la zona volcànica de la Garrotxa i de la falla d’Amer, una zona que per les seves característiques geològiques, com ara la presència de falles que poden ser actives, podria afavorir la presència de radó. En aquest treball s’inclou una descripció detallada de la metodologia utilitzada per la mesura d’aquest gas, posant especial èmfasi en el control de qualitat dels sistemes de mesura emprats. Els resultats obtinguts al llarg de més d’un any d’investigacions, on s’han mesurat llocs de treballs i llars, demostren que les concentracions en general són baixes, però que les seves variacions estacionals depenen de la presència de materials volcànics en el subsòl i d’una xarxa de conductes subterranis. Aquest resultat ha motivat uns estudis més detallats dels nivells de radó i altres radionúclids naturals en el sòl al voltant de la falla d’Amer, en les aigües subterrànies i en l’aire dels bufadors de la zona volcànica de la Garrotxa.

Development of advanced silicon radiation detectors for high energy physics and medical imaging

The 1st chapter of this work presents the different experiments and collaborations in which I am involved during my PhD studies of Physics. Following those descriptions, the 2nd chapter is dedicated to how the radiation affects the silicon sensors, as well as some experimental measurements carried out at CERN (Geneve, Schwitzerland) and IFIC (Valencia, Spain) laboratories. Besides the previous investigation results, this chapter includes the most recent scientific papers appeared in the latest RD50 (Research & Development #50) Status Report, published in January 2007, as well as some others published this year. The 3rd and 4th are dedicated to the simulation of the electrical behavior of solid state detectors. In chapter 3 are reported the results obtained for the illumination of edgeless detectors irradiated at different fluences, in the framework of the TOSTER Collaboration. The 4th chapter reports about simulation design, simulation and fabrication of a novel 3D detector developed at CNM for ions detection in the future ITER fusion reactor. This chapter will be extended with irradiation simulations and experimental measurements in my PhD Thesis.

Non-characteristic half-lives in radioactive decay

Half-lives of radionuclides span more than 50 orders of magnitude. We characterize the probability distribution of this broad-range data set at the same time that explore a method for fitting power-laws and testing goodness-of-fit. It is found that the procedure proposed recently by Clauset et al. [SIAM Rev. 51, 661 (2009)] does not perform well as it rejects the power-law hypothesis even for power-law synthetic data. In contrast, we establish the existence of a power-law exponent with a value around 1.1 for the half-life density, which can be explained by the sharp relationship between decay rate and released energy, for different disintegration types. For the case of alpha emission, this relationship constitutes an original mechanism of power-law generation.

Characterization and simulation of a CdTe detector for use in PET

The Voxel Imaging PET (VIP) Path nder project got the 4 year European Research Council FP7 grant in 2010 to prove the feasibility of using CdTe detectors in a novel conceptual design of PET scanner. The work presented in this thesis is a part of the VIP project and consists of, on the one hand, the characterization of a CdTe detector in terms of energy resolution and coincidence time resolution and, on the other hand, the simulation of the setup with the single detector in order to extend the results to the full PET scanner. An energy resolution of 0.98% at 511 keV with a bias voltage of 1000 V/mm has been measured at low temperature T=-8 ºC. The coincidence time distribution of two twin detectors has been found to be as low as 6 ns FWHM for events with energies above 500 keV under the same temperature and bias conditions. The measured energy and time resolution values are compatible with similar ndings available in the literature and prove the excellent potential of CdTe for PET applications. This results have been presented in form of a poster contribution at the IEEE NSS/MIC & RTSD 2011 conference in October 2011 in Valencia and at the iWoRID 2012 conference in July 2012 in Coimbra, Portugal. They have been also submitted for publication to "Journal of Instrumentation (JINST)" in September 2012.

Assessment of virtual design and manufacturing techniques for fibre reinforced composite materials

Virtual tools are commonly used nowadays to optimize product design and manufacturing process of fibre reinforced composite materials. The present work focuses on two areas of interest to forecast the part performance and the production process particularities. The first part proposes a multi-physical optimization tool to support the concept stage of a composite part. The strategy is based on the strategic handling of information and, through a single control parameter, is able to evaluate the effects of design variations throughout all these steps in parallel. The second part targets the resin infusion process and the impact of thermal effects. The numerical and experimental approach allowed the identificationof improvement opportunities regarding the implementation of algorithms in commercially available simulation software.

Modelización constitutiva y computacional del daño y la fractura de materiales compuestos

En el trabajo se definen modelos constitutivos que permiten reproducir el proceso de fallo de estructuras de materiales compuestos en distintas escalas bajo cargas estáticas. Se define un modelo constitutivo para determinar la respuesta de estructuras de materiales compuestos mediante la teoría de laminados. El modelo es validado mediante un programa de ensayos experimentales con probetas con un agujero central geométricamente similares. Se muestra la capacidad del modelo de detectar el efecto tamaño. Se define un modelo constitutivo para materiales transversalmente isótropos bajo estados tridimensionales de tensión. El modelo se valida analizando numéricamente el proceso de agrietamiento de la matriz. Finalmente se desarrolla un modelo analítico para determinar el agrietamiento de la matriz y la delaminación entre las capas.

El Comportament electoral dels espanyols al referèndum de la Constitució Europea

Aquest paper tracta dels resultats del referèndum sobre la Constitució Europea que es va celebrar a Espanya el 20 de febrer de 2005. Hi trobem un panorama general del context en el qual se celebrà la consulta, i, a través de l’anàlisi d’enquestes postelectorals, analitza la composició del vot afirmatiu i del negatiu, la posició dels diferents partits polítics i el comportament electoral dels diversos actors socials, dividits per classe social, religió, edat, gènere, territori, etc. També hi ha una anàlisi de l’abstenció i de la participació a Espanya en aquest cas.

La constitució de la naturalesa moral de l'home

En aquest treball filosòfic pretenem reflexionar sobre l'origen natural del fet moral, tot fent una comparació amb fets culturals, com ara, els Drets Humans o la mutilació genital femenina. La conclusió és que la moral es basa en el sentit dels comportaments més que no els comportaments en si mateixos.

La Constitució Europea i la reforma de l´Estatut

Aparentment, semblaria que entre la CE i la reforma de l'Estatut no hi hauria d'haver-hi una relació molt directa, però l'autor pensa que sí, sobretot tenint en compte com han anat les discussions entorn de la pròpia CE i les expectatives que s'havien posat sobre la possibilitat de què la CE pogués també fer directament un reconeixement del factor regional. L'autor creu que és important no perdre de vista que la influència que podria tenir Catalunya a la UE.
