The western Lau Basin, between the Central and Eastern Lau Spreading Centers and the Lau Ridge, contains several small, elongate, fault-bounded, partially sediment-filled sub-basins. Sites 834 and 835 were drilled in the oldest part of the Lau Basin in two of these small extensional basins close to the Lau Ridge, formed on late Miocene to early Pliocene oceanic crust. Both sites show a similar sediment sequence that consists of clayey nannofossil oozes and mixed sediments interbedded with epiclastic vitric sands and silts. The vitric sands and silts are largely restricted to the deeper part of the sediment column (early Pliocene-late Pliocene), and the upper part of the sediment column at both sites consists of a distinctive sequence of brown clayey nannofossil ooze, stained by iron and manganese oxyhydroxides (late Pliocene-Holocene). However, the clayey nannofossil ooze sequence at Site 835 is anomalously thick and contains several medium- to very thick beds of matrix-supported, mud-clast conglomerate (interpreted as muddy debris-flow deposits), together with large amounts of redeposited clayey nannofossil ooze and coherent rafted blocks of older hemipelagic material. Redeposited clayey nannofossil oozes can be distinguished from hemipelagic nannofossil oozes using several sedimentological criteria. These include variation in color hue and chroma, presence or absence of bioturbation, presence or absence of scattered foraminifers, grain-size characteristics, variability in calcium carbonate content, presence or absence of pumice clasts, and micropaleontology. Clayey nannofossil ooze turbidites and hemipelagites are also geochemically distinct, with the turbidites being commonly enriched in Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cr, and P. The sediment sequence at Site 835 is dominated by allochthonous sediments, either muddy debris-flow deposits, coherent rafted blocks, or thick clayey nannofossil ooze turbidites. Since 2.9 Ma, only 25% of the 133 m of sediments deposited represents hemipelagic deposition, with an average sedimentation rate of 1.5 cm/k.y.. Allochthonous sediments were the main sediment type deposited during the Brunhes geomagnetic Epoch and make up 80% of the thickness of sediment deposited during this period. Short intervals of mainly hemipelagic deposition occurred from 0.4 to 0.9 Ma, 1.0 to 1.4 Ma, and 1.7 to 2.1 Ma. However, allochthonous sediments were again the dominant sediment type deposited between 2.1 and 2.5 Ma, with a large slide complex emplaced around 2.5 Ma. We conclude that the adjacent high ground, surrounding the basin in which Site 835 was drilled, was affected by marked instability throughout the late Pliocene and Pleistocene. In contrast, sedimentation at Site 834 during this period has been dominated by hemipelagic deposition, with redeposited sediments making up slightly less than 17% of the total thickness of sediment deposited since 2.3 Ma. However, there was a marked increase in frequency and magnitude of redeposited sediments at around 0.2 Ma at Site 834, which broadly corresponds to the onset of a major episode of turbidite and debris-flow emplacement beginning about 0.4 Ma at Site 835. This episode of instability at both sites may be the effect of the approach and passing of the Central Lau propagator at the latitude of Sites 834 and 835 at about 0.5 Ma.

The chronostratigraphy, the calcareous nannofossil biochronology, and the biostratigraphy of the Miocene and Pliocene sediments retrieved during Leg 115 in the equatorial western Indian Ocean are presented and discussed. Most of the zonal boundaries of the standard 1971 zonation of Martini and the 1973 zonation of Bukry are easily recognized in these low-latitude sediments. We also comment on the secondary events that are proposed in the literature to improve the biostratigraphic resolution provided by the standard zonations. The study of calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and taphonomy of sequences from the Northern Mascarene Plateau area, which was drilled to investigate the Neogene history of carbonate flux and dissolution, indicate that the accumulation of carbonates in this area results from a complex interplay among carbonate bioproductivity, carbonate removal by chemical dissolution and mechanical erosion, and carbonate addition by mass and current transport. In spite of these drawbacks, major changes and trends in carbonate accumulation can be recognized, most of which, if not all, correlate with major steps in the evolution of the Neogene climatic system.

大气臭氧的损耗导致了地球表面具有生物学效应的紫外线-B(UV-B)辐射增强。同时,大气成分变化中除了UV-B辐射增强外,氮沉降是一个新近出现而又令人担忧的环境问题,其来源和分布正在迅速扩展到全球范围,并不断向陆地和水生生态系统沉降。本试验在四川省境内的中国科学院茂县生态站内进行,以云山、冷杉、色木槭和红椋子幼苗为模式植物,从生长形态、光合作用、抗氧化能力和矿质营养等方面研究了青藏高原东缘4种树苗对全球变化-增强UV-B辐射和氮供应(氮沉降)的响应。该试验为室外盆栽试验,包括四个处理:(1)大气UV-B辐射+无额外的氮供应(C);(2)大气UV-B辐射+额外的氮供应(N);(3)增强UV-B辐射+无额外的氮供应(UV-B);(4)增强UV-B辐射+额外的氮供应(UV-B+N)。其目的:一方面有助于丰富我国对全球变化及区域响应研究的全面认识,进一步完善在全球气候变化条件下臭氧层削减和氮沉降对陆地生态系统影响的内容;另一方面,在一定程度上有助于我们更好的理解在全球变化下森林更新的早期过程。具体结果如下: 增强的UV-B辐射在生长形态、光合、抗氧化能力、活性氧和矿质营养方面对4种幼苗都有显著的影响。UV-B辐射增强对幼苗的影响不仅与物种有关,而且,还与氮营养水平相关。总体表现为,高的UV-B辐射导致了色木槭和红椋子幼苗叶片的皱缩和卷曲,并降低了色木槭幼苗的叶片数和叶重,在额外的氮供应下,云杉、冷杉和红椋子的叶重也显著地降低了;色木槭和红椋子幼苗叶片的解剖结构受到了增强的UV-B辐射的影响,增强的UV-B辐射显著地降低了色木槭叶片的栅栏组织厚度,提高了红椋子叶片的厚度;增强的UV-B辐射显著地降低了4种幼苗的单株总生物量、植物地下部分的生长、总叶绿素含量 [Chl (a + b)]、净光合速率和最大量子产量(Fv/Fm),提高了4种幼苗叶片的膜脂过氧化(MDA含量),改变了植物体不同器官中的矿质元素含量;增强的UV-B辐射提高了冷杉、色木槭和红椋子叶片中的过氧化氢含量(H2O2)、超氧负离子(O2-)生成速率,在额外的氮供应下,云杉叶片中的活性氧含量也显著地提高了;在无额外的氮供应条件下,增强的UV-B辐射显著地提高了4种幼苗叶片中的UV-B吸收物质、脯氨酸含量和抗氧化酶的活性(SOD、POD、CAT、GRAPX)。在额外的氮供应条件下,UV-B辐射的增强却显著地降低了冷杉叶片中脯氨酸含量和红椋子叶片中UV-B吸收物质含量,但是,在4种幼苗叶片中,5种抗氧化酶的活性对UV-B辐射的增强没有明显的规律性,增强的UV-B辐射显著地提高了云杉叶片中的POD、SOD和GR活性,提高了冷杉叶片中的POD和GR性,提高了色木槭叶片中的POD、SOD和CAT活性和红椋子幼苗叶片中的POD和SOD活性。从这些结果可知,植物在遭受高的UV-B辐射导致的过氧化胁迫时,植物体内形成了一定的保护机制,但是,这种保护不能抵抗高的UV-B辐射对植物的伤害。 额外的氮供应在生长形态、光合、抗氧化能力、活性氧和矿质营养方面对4种幼苗都有一定的影响,不同幼苗对额外的氮供应响应不同,并且受到UV-B辐射水平的影响。在当地现有的UV-B辐射水平下,额外的氮供应显著地提高了幼苗的单株总生物量、植物地下部分的生长、Chl (a + b)、净光合速率(红椋子除外)、UV-B吸收物质(冷杉除外)、脯氨酸含量(红椋子除外)和部分抗氧化酶的活性,降低了H2O2的含量、O2-的生成速率和MDA含量(红椋子除外),改变了植物体内部分矿质元素含量,显著地提高了云杉和冷杉叶片中的Fv/Fm。这些指标总体表明,在当地现有大气UV-B辐射水平下,额外的氮供应对植物的生长和发育是有利的。在增强的UV-B辐射水平下,4种幼苗的生长形态和光合大部分指标都没有受到额外氮供应的影响,额外的氮供应提高了红椋子幼苗的单株总生物量和Chl (a + b)含量,提高了冷杉和色木槭叶片中的活性氧含量和MDA含量,却降低了红椋子叶片中的活性氧含量;额外的氮供应也提高了云杉、色木槭和红椋子叶片中UV-B吸收物质和脯氨酸含量,降低了冷杉叶片中UV-B吸收物质和脯氨酸含量;在抗氧化酶活性方面,额外的氮供应降低了云杉、冷杉叶片中5种抗氧化酶的活性和红椋子叶片中POD和GR活性,提高了色木槭叶片中的POD和SOD的活性;4种幼苗植物体内的矿质元素含量对额外的氮供应没有显著的规律性。从这些结果可知,在高的UV-B辐射下,额外的氮供应提高了云杉、冷杉和色木槭幼苗对高的UV-B辐射的敏感性,然而,额外的氮供应却促进了红椋子幼苗的生长,原因可能是,在高的UV-B辐射下,额外的氮供应增加了红椋子叶片的厚度、叶重和叶片数,降低了叶片中活性氧含量的结果。表明在高的UV-B辐射水平下,额外的氮供应降低了红椋子幼苗对高的UV-B辐射的敏感性。 在全球变化的趋势下,UV-B辐射增强和氮沉降可能同时存在,我们的研究表明,与大气UV-B辐射+无额外的氮供应处理相比,增强UV-B辐射+额外的氮供应处理显著地降低了幼苗的单株总生物量(红椋子除外)、Chl (a + b)、净光合速率、Fv/Fm(冷杉除外)和MDA含量(红椋子除外),提高了活性氧含量 (云杉除外)、UV-B紫外吸收物质含量(冷杉除外)、脯氨酸含量和部分抗氧化酶的活性,改变了植物体不同器官中的矿质元素含量。结果表明,在当地现有条件下,全球变化(UV-B辐射增强和氮沉降)对云杉、冷杉和色木槭幼苗的生长是不利,尽管植物体内一些抗氧化性指标提高了,然而,却对红椋子幼苗的单株总生物量的累积没有显著的影响。 The depletion of the ozone led to the increase of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) with biological effects in the earth’s surface. At the same time, except for enhanced UV-B radiation, nitrogen deposition was an anxious environmental problem at present, rapidly expanding to the global scope and continuously depositing to land and aquatic ecosystem. The experiment was conducted in Maoxian Ecological Station of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Sichuan province, China. Picea asperata, Abies faxoniana, Acer mono Maxim and Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings were selected as model plants to assess the effects of enhanced UV-B radiation and supplemental nitrogen supply on growth, morphological, photosynthesis, antioxidant and mineral nutrient traits of 4 species seedlings in east Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The experiment was potted outdoor, including 4 treatments: (1) ambient UV-B without supplemental nitrogen (control, C); (2) ambient UV-B with supplemental nitrogen (N); (3) enhanced UV-B without supplemental nitrogen (UV-B); (4) enhanced UV-B with supplemental nitrogen (UV-B+N). One hand, it was helpful for enriching our country to comprehensive understanding of the researches in the global change and the region response, further perfecting the effects of the depleted ozone layer and nitrogen deposition on land ecosystem under the global change; the other hand, it was favorable for us to better understanding of the early process of forest renews under the global change. The results were as follows: Enhanced UV-B radiation had significant effects on 4 species seedlings in growth, morphological, photosynthesis, antioxidant and mineral nutrient traits of 4 species seedlings. The effects of enhanced UV-B on plants were not only related with species, but also related with nitrogen nutrient level. Generally, the increase of UV-B radiation led to the shrinkage and curl of leaves in Acer mono Maxim and Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings, and reduced the number of leaf and leaf weight of Acer mono Maxim seedlings, under supplemental nitrogen supply, leaf weight of Picea asperata, Abies faxoniana and Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings significantly also reduced; the anatomical features of leaf in Acer mono Maxim and Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings affected by enhanced UV-B radiation, the increase of UV-B radiation markedly reduced the palisade tissue thickness of Acer mono Maxim leaf and enhanced the leaf thickness of Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings; the enhanced UV-B radiation significantly reduced total biomass per plant of 4 species seedlings, the growth of the underground parts, Chl (a + b), net photosynthetic rate and maximum potential quantum yield of photosynthesis (Fv/Fm), and increased the degree of lipid peroxidation (MDA content) and changed the content of mineral elements in different parts of plants; the enhanced UV-B radiation also increased the rate of superoxide radical (O2-) production and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content in leaves of Abies faxoniana, Acer mono Maxim, Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings, under supplemental nitrogen supply, the reactive oxygen species in leaves of Picea asperata seedlings also significantly increased by enhanced UV-B radiation; under without supplemental nitrogen supply, enhanced UV-B radiation evidently induced an increase in UV-B absorbing compounds, proline content and the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT, GR and APX) of leaves in 4 species seedlings. Under supplemental nitrogen supply, enhanced UV-B radiation induced a decrease in proline content of leaves in Abies faxoniana seedlings and UV-B absorbing compounds of leaves in Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings, but, there were no obvious rules in the activities of five antioxidant enzymes of 4 species seedling leaves to enhanced UV-B radiation, enhanced UV-B radiation significantly increased the activities of POD, SOD and GR in Picea asperata leaves, the activities of POD and GR in Abies faxoniana leaves and the activities of POD, SOD and CAT in Acer mono Maxim leaves. The results indicated that some protective mechanism was formed when plants were exposed to enhanced UV-B radiation, but the protection could not counteract the harm of high UV-B radiation on plants. Supplemental nitrogen supply had some effects on 4 species seedlings in growth, morphological, photosynthesis, antioxidant and mineral nutrient traits. The response of 4 species seedlings was different to supplemental nitrogen supply, and was affected by UV-B levels. Under local ambient UV-B radiation, supplemental nitrogen supply significantly increased the total biomass per plant, the growth of underground parts, Chl (a + b), net photosynthetic rate (except for Acer mono Maxim seedlings), UV-B absorbing compounds (except for Abies faxoniana seedlings), proline content (except for Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings) and the activities of some antioxidant enzymes, and reduced H2O2 content, the rate of O2- production and MDA content (except for Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings) and changed the content of mineral elemental in different parts; supplemental nitrogen supply also evidently increased Fv/Fm in Picea asperata and Abies faxoniana seedlings. These results indicated that supplemental nitrogen supply was favorable for the growth of plants under local ambient UV-B radiation. Under enhanced UV-B radiation, mostly parameters in growth and morphology of 4 species seedlings were not affected by supplemental nitrogen supply. Supplemental nitrogen supply increased the total biomass per plant and Chl (a + b) of Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedling, increased the reactive oxygen species and MDA content in Abies faxoniana and Acer mono Maxim leaves, and reduced the reactive oxygen species in Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak leaves; supplemental nitrogen supply also increased UV-B absorbing compounds and proline content in Picea asperata, Acer mono Maxim and Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak leaves, decreased UV-B absorbing compounds and proline content in Abies faxoniana leaves; in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, supplemental nitrogen supply significantly reduced the activities of antioxidant enzymes in Picea asperata and Abies faxoniana leaves and the activities of POD and GR in Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak leaves, and increased the activities of POD and SOD in Acer mono Maxim leaves; the content of mineral elements in 4 species seedlings was no significantly rule to supplemental nitrogen supply. We knew from the results, under enhanced UV-B radiation, supplemental nitrogen supply made Picea asperata, Acer faxoniana and Acer mono Maxim seedlings more sensitivity to enhanced UV-B radiation, however, accelerated the growth of Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings. The reason was probably that supplemental nitrogen supply increased the leaf thickness, leaf weight and leaf number, reduced the reactive oxygen content of leaf in Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings grown under high UV-B radiation. This showed that supplemental nitrogen supply reduced the sensitivity of Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings to high UV-B radiation. Under the tendency of the global change, enhanced UV-B radiation and nitrogen deposition may probably coexist. The results showed, compared with the treatment of ambient UV-B radiation without supplemental nitrogen supply, the treatment of enhanced UV-B radiation with supplemental nitrogen supply significantly reduced the total biomass per plants (except for Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings), Chl (a + b), net photosynthetic rate, Fv/Fm and MDA content (except for Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings), and increased reactive oxygen content (except for Picea asperata seedlings), UV-B absorbing compounds (except for Abies faxoniana seedlings), proline content and part antioxidant enzymes, and changed the content of mineral elements of different parts. The results indicated that the global change (enhanced UV-B and nitrogen deposition) were not favorable for the growth of plants under local ambient UV-B radiation and nitrogen nutrient level,, though increased some antioxidant indexes, however, the treatment of enhanced UV-B with supplement nitrogen supply did not significantly affect on the biomass accumulation of Swida hemsleyi (Schneid. et Wanger.) Sojak seedlings.

El trabajo describe en grandes rasgos la evoluci??n del concepto y del uso de los espacios naturales en la educaci??n, centr??ndose especialmente en el contexto educativo formal entre mediados del siglo XIX hasta la actualidad y en el ??mbito de la isla de Mallorca. Como principal hip??tesis de trabajo se expone que los espacios naturales, hoy en d??a protegidos, han sido tradicionales recursos para la did??ctica de las ciencias naturales y para la Educaci??n Ambiental pero en los ??ltimos a??os han pasado a convertirse en elementos clave de una estrategia general para la educaci??n por la conservaci??n y el desarrollo. Por una parte se realiza un breve repaso por la historia de los usos de los espacios naturales en estos ciento cincuenta a??os, en cuanto a las diversas concepciones pedag??gicas y la evoluci??n en su conservaci??n. Por otra se realiza una aproximaci??n a los diversos usos de estos espacios naturales, desde el huerto escolar y la siembra de ??rboles, las colonias escolares, el fen??meno del escultismo, la formaci??n de los maestros y las iniciativas de instituciones p??blicas y privadas, hasta alcanzar el uso educativo actual de los espacios naturales protegidos, m??s como estrategia que como recurso. The study of complex systems has become a prestigious area of science, although relatively young . Its importance was demonstrated by the diversity of applications that several studies have already provided to various fields such as biology , economics and Climatology . In physics , the approach of complex systems is creating paradigms that influence markedly the new methods , bringing to Statistical Physics problems macroscopic level no longer restricted to classical studies such as those of thermodynamics . The present work aims to make a comparison and verification of statistical data on clusters of profiles Sonic ( DT ) , Gamma Ray ( GR ) , induction ( ILD ) , neutron ( NPHI ) and density ( RHOB ) to be physical measured quantities during exploratory drilling of fundamental importance to locate , identify and characterize oil reservoirs . Software were used : Statistica , Matlab R2006a , Origin 6.1 and Fortran for comparison and verification of the data profiles of oil wells ceded the field Namorado School by ANP ( National Petroleum Agency ) . It was possible to demonstrate the importance of the DFA method and that it proved quite satisfactory in that work, coming to the conclusion that the data H ( Hurst exponent ) produce spatial data with greater congestion . Therefore , we find that it is possible to find spatial pattern using the Hurst coefficient . The profiles of 56 wells have confirmed the existence of spatial patterns of Hurst exponents , ie parameter B. The profile does not directly assessed catalogs verification of geological lithology , but reveals a non-random spatial distribution

A correlação estratigrfica busca a determinação da continuidade lateral das rochas, ou a equivalência espacial entre unidades litológicas em subsuperfície, a partir de informações geológico-geofísicas oriundas de poços tubulares, que atravessam estas rochas. Normalmente, mas não exclusivamente, a correlação estratigrfica é realizada a partir das propriedades físicas registradas nos perfis geofísicos de poço. Neste caso, busca-se a equivalência litológica a partir da equivalência entre as propriedades físicas, medidas nos vários poços de um campo petrolífero. A técnica da correlação estratigrfica com perfis geofísicos de poço não é uma atividade trivial e sim, sujeita a inúmeras possibilidades de uma errônea interpretação da disposição geométrica ou da continuidade lateral das rochas em subsuperfície, em função da variabilidade geológica e da ambigüidade das respostas das ferramentas. Logo, é recomendável a utilização de um grande número de perfis de um mesmo poço, para uma melhor interpretação. A correlação estratigrfica é fundamental para o engenheiro de reservatório ou o geólogo, pois a partir da mesma, é possível a definição de estratégias de explotação de um campo petrolífero e a interpretação das continuidades hidráulicas dos reservatórios, bem como auxílio para a construção do modelo geológico para os reservatórios, a partir da interpretação do comportamento estrutural das diversas camadas em subsuperfície. Este trabalho apresenta um método de automação das atividades manuais envolvidas na correlação estratigrfica, com a utilização de vários perfis geofísicos de poço, através de uma arquitetura de rede neural artificial multicamadas, treinada com o algoritmo de retropropagação do erro. A correlação estratigrfica, obtida a partir da rede neural artificial, possibilita o transporte da informação geológica do datum de correlação ao longo do campo, possibilitando ao intérprete, uma visão espacial do comportamento do reservatório e a simulação dos possíveis paleoambientes. Com a metodologia aqui apresentada foi possível a construção automática de um bloco diagrama, mostrando a disposição espacial de uma camada argilosa, utilizando-se os perfis de Raio Gama (RG), Volume de Argila (Vsh), Densidade (ρb) e de Porosidade Neutrônica (φn) selecionados em cinco poços da região do Lago Maracaibo, na Venezuela.

Quantitative records of Globorotalia puncticulata and Globorotalia inflata, the last two members of the Globorotalia (Globoconella) lineage, obtained from North Atlantic sediments collected at DSDP Site 552, ODP Site 659 and ODP Site 665, are used to examine fluctuations in the biogeographic distribution of these species in the Late Pliocene between 3 and 2 Ma. Abundance data indicate that prior to the expansion of Northern Hemisphere glaciation at about 2.5 Ma, Gr. puncticulata was an important component of the planktonic foraminiferal fauna and had a geographic distribution ranging from 2°N to at least 56°N in the North Atlantic. A previously undescribed 6 chambered variant of Gr. puncticulata is found at both Sites 659 and 665. The stratigraphic distribution of this morphotype is restricted, first occurring at 2.9 Ma and then disappearing when glacial intensity increased at 2.75 Ma (isotope stage 110). Similar declines in Gr. puncticulata abundances occurred during glacial isotope stages 102, 100, and 98 immediately prior to the extinction of Gr. puncticulata during glacial isotope stage 96. It appears that this extinction event was latitudinally diachronous within the North Atlantic, occurring earliest in the north at Site 552 (2.453 Ma), then at Site 659 (2.443 Ma) and later still in the Site 665 equatorial record (2.438 Ma). At Site 665 the first record of Gr. inflata occurs during glacial isotope stage 94 (2.416 Ma), shortly after the extinction of Gr. puncticulata. In the mid latitude North Atlantic there was a 340,000 year period following the disappearance of Gr. puncticulata when the Globoconella lineage was absent (the Gr. inflata gap). The Gr. inflata population found in the equatorial Atlantic must therefore have been introduced from the South Atlantic, probably by the South Equatorial Current. Faunal records from Sites 552 and 659 show that it was not until glacial isotope stage 78 (2.10 Ma) that Gr. inflata became widely established in the North Atlantic. Prior to this large-scale migration event, there were two limited colonisation events during glacial isotope stages 86 and 82 when Gr. inflata populations reached as far as Site 659 in the eastern North Atlantic. These incursions are believed to be reflect the entrainment of Gr. inflata within South Atlantic Central Water and the northward subsurface transport of individuals to the coastal upwelling zone off northwest Africa. It seems likely that the same mechanism was responsible for the re-establishment of the Globoconella lineage in the North Atlantic at 2.10 Ma, but in this instance additional factors, such as enhanced glacial circulation patterns and ecological changes within planktonic foraminiferal faunas, resulted in the successful expansion of Gr. inflata across the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

Cores from Sites 1135, 1136, and 1138 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 183 to the Kerguelen Plateau (KP) provide the most complete Paleocene and Eocene sections yet recovered from the southern Indian Ocean. These nannofossil-foraminifer oozes and chalks provide an opportunity to study southern high-latitude biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic events, which is the primary subject of this paper. In addition, a stable isotope profile was established across the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary at Site 1138. An apparently complete K/T boundary was recovered at Site 1138 in terms of assemblage succession, isotopic signature, and reworking of older (Cretaceous) nannofossil taxa. There is a significant color change, a negative carbon isotope shift, and nannofossil turnover. The placement of the boundary based on these criteria, however, is not in agreement with the available shipboard paleomagnetic stratigraphy. We await shore-based paleomagnetic study to confirm or deny those preliminary results. The Paleocene nannofossil assemblage is, in general, characteristic of the high latitudes with abundant Chiasmolithus, Prinsius, and Toweius. Placed in context with other Southern Ocean sites, the biogeography of Hornibrookina indicates the presence of some type of water mass boundary over the KP during the earliest Paleocene. This boundary disappeared by the late Paleocene, however, when there was an influx of warm-water discoasters, sphenoliths, and fasciculiths. This not only indicates that during much of the late Paleocene water temperatures were relatively equable, but preliminary floral and stable isotope analyses also indicate that a relatively complete record of the late Paleocene Thermal Maximum event was recovered at Site 1135. It was only at the beginning of the middle Eocene that water temperatures began to decline and the nannofossil assemblage became dominated by cool-water species while discoaster and sphenolith abundances and diversity were dramatically reduced. One new taxonomic combination is proposed, Heliolithus robustus Arney, Ladner, and Wise.

During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 149, five sites were drilled on the Iberia Abyssal Plain in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Both Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments were recovered. Oligocene to Miocene sediments were cored at deepwater Sites 897, 898, 899, and 900. Except for a few intervals, occurrences of generally abundant and well-preserved calcareous nannofossils suggest that the deposition of the turbidite-type sediments occurred above the calcite compensation depth (CCD). One major unconformity in the middle late Miocene is present. Detailed quantitative analyses of calcareous nannofossils are used to determine the changes occurring among the nannoflora in relation to sea-level variation. A succession of 89 biohorizons from the early Oligocene to the late Miocene are defined by combining the biostratigraphic results of the four sites studied in the Iberia Abyssal Plain. One new genus and eight new species are described: Camuralithus, Camuralithus pelliculatus, Ericsonia detecta, Helicosphaera limasera, Sphenolithus akropodus, Sphenolithus aubryae, Sphenolithus cometa, Reticulofenestra circus, and Syracosphaera lamina. Two new variations and seven new combinations are also introduced.

Seven sites drilled in the central New Hebrides Island Arc during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 134 yielded varying quantities of upper Eocene through Pleistocene calcareous nannofossils. Most of the Miocene and Pliocene strata were absent from Sites 827-831 drilled along the collisional boundary between the Australia and Pacific plates where the North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge and Bougainville Guyot are being subducted. Sites 832 and 833, drilled in the intra-arc North Aoba Basin, contained upper Miocene through Pleistocene and early Pliocene through Pleistocene nannofossils, respectively. Detailed range charts displaying species abundances and age interpretations are presented for all of the sites. Despite problems of reworked assemblages, poor preservation, overgrowths and/or dilution from volcaniclastics, the nannofossil biostratigraphy delineates several repeated sections at Site 829 in the accretionary prism adjacent to Espiritu Santo Island. Paleogene pelagic sediments equivalent to those in a reference section at Site 828 appear to have been scraped from the downgoing North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge and accreted onto the forearc during the Pleistocene. Other sediments in the forearc include Pleistocene olistostromal trench-fill deposits containing clasts of various ages and compositions. Some of the clasts and olistoliths have affinities to rocks exposed on the neighboring islands and environs, whereas others are of uncertain origin. The matrix of the olistostromes is predominately Pleistocene, however, matrices of mixed nannofossil ages are frequently encountered. Comparisons of the mixed nannofossil ages in the matrices with sedimentological and structural data suggest that sediment mixing resulting from fault movement is subordinate to that occurring during deposition.

During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 189, five sites were drilled in the Tasmanian Seaway with the objective to constrain the paleoceanographic implications of the separation of Australia from Antarctica and to elucidate the paleoceanographic developments throughout the Neogene (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001a, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.189.101.2001). Sediments ranged from Cretaceous to Quaternary in age and provided the opportunity to describe the paleoenvironments in the Tasman Seaway prior to, during, and after the separation of Australia and Antarctica. This study will focus on postseparation distribution of calcareous nannofossils through the Miocene. Miocene sediments were recovered at all five Leg 189 sites, and four of these sites were studied in detail to determine the calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy. Hole 1168A, located on the western Tasmanian margin, contains a fairly continuous Miocene record and could be easily zoned using the Okada and Bukry (1980, doi:10.1016/0377-8398(80)90016-X) zonation. Analysis of sediments from Hole 1169A, located on the western South Tasman Rise, was not included in this study, as the recovered sediments were highly disturbed and unsuitable for further analysis (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001c, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.189.104.2001). Holes 1170A, 1171A, and 1171C are located on the South Tasman Rise south of the modern Subtropical Front (STF). They revealed incomplete Miocene sequences intersected by an early Miocene and late Miocene hiatus and could only be roughly zoned using the Okada and Bukry zonation. Similarly, Hole 1172A, located on the East Tasman Plateau, contains a Miocene sequence with a hiatus in the early Miocene and in the late Miocene and could only be roughly zoned using the Okada and Bukry (1980, doi:10.1016/0377-8398(80)90016-X) zonation. This study aims to improve calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphic resolution in this sector of the mid to high southern latitudes. This paper will present abundance, preservation, and stratigraphic distribution of calcareous nannofossils through the Miocene and focus mainly on biozonal assignment.

Sponge spicules found in Eocene, Oligocene, and middle Miocene sediments at DSDP Leg 71 Sites 511,512, and 513 belong to two classes; Hyalospongiae and Demospongiae. On the basis of spicule types and stratigraphic characteristics, spicule assemblages are distinguished for the lower and upper units of the middle Eocene, the upper Eocene, the lower Oligocene, the lower and upper units of the upper Oligocene, and the middle Miocene. In addition, 23 types and 76 dimensional varieties of spicules are described.
