Carbon microcoils (CMCs) have been coated with a Ni nanoparticle film using an electroless plating process. The morphology, the elemental composition and the phases in the coating layer, complex permittivity and permeability of the CMCs and Ni-coated CMCs were, respectively, investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and microwave vector network analysis at room temperature. A homogeneous dispersion of Ni nanoparticles on the outer surface of the CMCs was obtained, with a mean particle size of ∼34.4 nm and the phosphorus content of about 8.5 wt%. When comparing the coated and uncoated CMC samples, the real (ε′) and imaginary (ε″) part of the complex permittivity as well as dielectric dissipation factor (tgδε = ε″/ε′) of the Ni-coated CMCs were much smaller, while the real (μ′) and imaginary (μ″) part of the complex permeability and the magnetic dissipation factor (t g σμ = μ″ / μ′) were larger. The enhanced microwave absorption of Ni-coated CMCs resulted from stronger dielectric and magnetic losses. In contrast, the microwave absorption of uncoated CMCs was mainly attributed to the dielectric rather than magnetic losses.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using tris-(8-hydroxy-quinolinato) aluminum (Alq(3)) as an emitter, 8-hydroxy-quinolinato lithium (Liq) as an electron injection layer, were prepared. Experimental results show that the efficiency of device with Liq is three times higher than that without Liq. The device using Liq as an injection layer is less sensitive in efficiency to the Liq thickness than that using LiF. In addition to the Alq3 based devices, Liq is also very effective as an electron injection layer for 4,4'-bis(2,2-diphenylvinyl)-1,1'-biphenyl based blue OLED and poly (2-methoxy,5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) based orange polymer OLED. In resin transfer molding processes, small clearances exist between the fiber preform and the mold edges, which result in a preferential resin flow in the edge channel and then disrupt the flow patterns during the mold filling stage. A mathematical model including the effect of cavity thickness on resin flow was developed for flow behavior involving the interface between an edge channel and a porous medium. According to the mathematical analysis of momentum equations in a fully developed rectangular duct and formulations of the equivalent edge permeability, comparing with three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, the governing equations were modified in the edge channel. The volume of fluid (VOF) method was applied to track the flow front. A simple case is numerically simulated using the modified governing equations. The effects of edge channel width and cavity thickness on flow front and inlet pressure are analyzed, and the evolution characteristics of simulated results are in agreement with the experimental results. Lanthanum-zirconium-cerium composite oxide (La-2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)(2)O-7, LZ7C3) as a candidate material for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) was prepared by electron beam-physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). The composition, crystal structure, thermophysical properties, surface and cross-sectional morphologies and cyclic oxidation behavior of the LZ7C3 coating were studied. The results indicated that LZ7C3 has a high phase stability between 298 K and 1573 K, and its linear thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) is similar to that of zirconia containing 8 wt% yttria (8YSZ). The thermal conductivity of LZ7C3 is 0.87 W m(-1) K-1 at 1273 K, which is almost 60% lower than that of 8YSZ. The deviation of coating composition from the ingot can be overcome by the addition of excess CeO2 and ZrO2 during ingot preparation or by adjusting the process parameters.

The generic and subgeneric classification of the family Batrachospermaceae (Rhodophyta) has long been recognized as ambiguous and often inconsistent. One of the prime features used to delineate sections of Batrachospermum, trichogyne shape, is variable even within given species. However, characters associated with the carposporophyte and the carpogonial branch, as well as carpogonial symmetry, are practical and consistent taxonomic criteria. These features have been used to redefine sectional delineation in Batrachospermum. Based on phylogenetic reasoning and practicality, it is proposed that the three genera Nothocladus, Sirodotia and Tuomeya be reduced to sectional level within Batrachospermum. The genus Batrachospermum would thus become the sole member of the Batrachospermaceae and would include two subgenera, Batrachospermum and Acarposporophytum, the former with nine clearly defined sections (Aristata, Batrachospermum, Contorta, Hybrida, Nothocladus (Skuja) stat. nov., Sirodotia (Kylin) stat. nov., Tuomeya (Harvey) stat. nov., Turficola and Viridia). As a result, the following nomenclatural changes are proposed: Batrachospermum lindaueri (Skuja) comb. nov., B. nodosum (Skuja) comb. nov., B. delicatulum (Skuja) comb. nov., B. fennicum (Skuja) comb. nov., B. suecicum (Kylin) comb. nov. and B. americanum (Kutzing) comb. nov.

PURPOSE. To evaluate the role of fellow eye status in determining progression of geographic atrophy (GA) in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS. A total of 300 eyes with GA of 193 patients from the prospective, longitudinal, natural history FAM Study were classified into three groups according to the AMD manifestation in the fellow eye at baseline examination: (1) bilateral GA, (2) early/intermediate AMD, and (3) exudative AMD. GA areas were quantified based on fundus autofluorescence images using a semiautomated image-processing method, and progression rates (PR) were estimated using two-level, linear, mixed-effects models. RESULTS. Crude GA-PR in the bilateral GA group (mean, 1.64 mm(2)/y; 95% CI, 1.478-1.803) was significantly higher than in the fellow eye early/intermediate group (0.74 mm(2)/y, 0.146-1.342). Although there was a significant difference in baseline GA size (P = 0.0013, t-test), and there was a significant increase in GA-PR by 0.11 mm(2)/y (0.05-0.17) per 1 disc area (DA; 2.54 mm(2)), an additional mean change of -0.79 (-1.43 to -0.15) was given to the PR beside the effect of baseline GA size. However, this difference was only significant when GA size was ?1 DA at baseline with a GA-PR of 1.70 mm(2)/y (1.54-1.85) in the bilateral and 0.95 mm(2)/y (0.37-1.54) in the early/intermediate group. There was no significant difference in PR compared with that in the fellow eye exudative group. CONCLUSIONS. The results indicate that the AMD manifestation of the fellow eye at baseline serves as an indicator for disease progression in eyes with GA ? 1 DA. Predictive characteristics not only contribute to the understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms, but also are useful for the design of future interventional trials in GA patients.

Large carbonate mound structures have been discovered in the northern Porcupine Seabight (Northeast Atlantic) at depths between 600 and 1000 m. These mounds are associated with the growth of deep-sea corals Lophelia pertusa and Madrepra oculata. In this study, three sediment cores have been analysed. They are from locations close to Propeller Mound, a 150 m high ridge-like feature covered with a cold-water coral ecosystem at its upper flanks. The investigations are concentrated on grain-size analyses, carbon measurements and on the visual description of the cores and computer tomographic images, to evaluate sediment content and structure. The cores portray the depositional history of the past ~31 kyr BP, mainly controlled by sea-level fluctuations and the climate regime with the advance and retreat of the Irish Ice Sheet onto the Irish Mainland Shelf. A first advance of glaciers is indicated by a turbiditic release slightly older than 31 kyr BP, coherent with Heinrich event 3 deposition. During Late Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) and MIS 2 shelf erosion prevailed with abundant gravity flows and turbidity currents. A change from glaciomarine to hemipelagic contourite sedimentation during the onset of the Holocene indicates the establishment of the strong, present-day hydrodynamic regime at intermediate depths. The general decrease in accumulation of sediments with decreasing distance towards Propeller Mound suggests that currents (turbidity currents, gravity flows, bottom currents) had a generally stronger impact on the sediment accumulation at the mound base for the past ~31 kyr BP, respectively.
