Ohutlevyteollisuuden markkinatilanne on muuttunut, kun tuotantomäärät ovat kasvaneet, laatuvaatimukset tiukentuneet ja markkinat globalisoituneet. Konenäön avulla on mahdollista tehostaa laadunvalvontaa, jolloin virheet voidaan havaita nopeammin ja siten säästää tuotantokustannuksissa. Muotoiltujen ohutlevyosien tarkastamiseksi tarvitaan kolmiulotteisia mittausmenetelmiä, joilla pystytään varsin nopeasti ja tarkasti analysoimaan kappaleita. Erityisesti fotogrammetriaan perustuvaa rakenteista valoa on sovellettu erilaisissa mittalaitteissa, ja menetelmä on myös varsin joustava sekä edullinen käyttää. Fotogrammetriaan ja rakenteiseen valoon perustuvista mittalaitteista valittiin arvioitavaksi Mapvision 4D. Testeissä tutkittiin laitteen tarkkuutta, nopeutta ja soveltuvuutta teollisuusympäristöön sekä erityisesti taivutuskulmien, reikien halkaisijoidenja etäisyyksien mittaamista. Sovittamalla mitattu data CAD-malliin pystytään kappaleen mitoitus tarkastamaan vaaditulla 0,1 millimetrin tarkkuudella. Testitulosten perusteella voidaan todeta sekä mittalaitteen että mittausmenetelmän soveltuvan ohutlevykappaleiden laadunvalvontaan, kunhan reunojen määrityksessä esiintyvä säännöllinen epätarkkuus otetaan huomioon.

Most external assessments of cervical range of motion assess the upper and lower cervical regions simultaneously. This study investigated the within and between days reliability of the clinical method used to bias this movement to the upper cervical region, namely measuring rotation of the head and neck in a position of full cervical flexion. Measurements were made using the Fastrak measurement system and were conducted by one operator. Results indicated high levels of within and between days repeatability (range of ICC2,1 values: 0.85-0.95). The ranges of axial rotation to right and left, measured with the neck positioned in full flexion, were approximately 56% and 50%, respectively of total cervical rotation, which relates well to the proportional division of rotation in the upper and lower cervical regions. These results suggest that this method of measuring rotation would be appropriate for use in subject studies where movement dysfunction is present in the upper cervical region, such as those with cervicogenic headache. One of the major challenges in the development of an immersive system is handling the delay between the tracking of the user’s head position and the updated projection of a 3D image or auralised sound, also called end-to-end delay. Excessive end-to-end delay can result in the general decrement of the “feeling of presence”, the occurrence of motion sickness and poor performance in perception-action tasks. These latencies must be known in order to provide insights on the technological (hardware/software optimization) or psychophysical (recalibration sessions) strategies to deal with them. Our goal was to develop a new measurement method of end-to-end delay that is both precise and easily replicated. We used a Head and Torso simulator (HATS) as an auditory signal sensor, a fast response photo-sensor to detect a visual stimulus response from a Motion Capture System, and a voltage input trigger as real-time event. The HATS was mounted in a turntable which allowed us to precisely change the 3D sound relative to the head position. When the virtual sound source was at 90º azimuth, the correspondent HRTF would set all the intensity values to zero, at the same time a trigger would register the real-time event of turning the HATS 90º azimuth. Furthermore, with the HATS turned 90º to the left, the motion capture marker visualization would fell exactly in the photo-sensor receptor. This method allowed us to precisely measure the delay from tracking to displaying. Moreover, our results show that the method of tracking, its tracking frequency, and the rendering of the sound reflections are the main predictors of end-to-end delay.

BACKGROUND: In vitro aggregating brain cell cultures containing all types of brain cells have been shown to be useful for neurotoxicological investigations. The cultures are used for the detection of nervous system-specific effects of compounds by measuring multiple endpoints, including changes in enzyme activities. Concentration-dependent neurotoxicity is determined at several time points. METHODS: A Markov model was set up to describe the dynamics of brain cell populations exposed to potentially neurotoxic compounds. Brain cells were assumed to be either in a healthy or stressed state, with only stressed cells being susceptible to cell death. Cells may have switched between these states or died with concentration-dependent transition rates. Since cell numbers were not directly measurable, intracellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was used as a surrogate. Assuming that changes in cell numbers are proportional to changes in intracellular LDH activity, stochastic enzyme activity models were derived. Maximum likelihood and least squares regression techniques were applied for estimation of the transition rates. Likelihood ratio tests were performed to test hypotheses about the transition rates. Simulation studies were used to investigate the performance of the transition rate estimators and to analyze the error rates of the likelihood ratio tests. The stochastic time-concentration activity model was applied to intracellular LDH activity measurements after 7 and 14 days of continuous exposure to propofol. The model describes transitions from healthy to stressed cells and from stressed cells to death. RESULTS: The model predicted that propofol would affect stressed cells more than healthy cells. Increasing propofol concentration from 10 to 100 μM reduced the mean waiting time for transition to the stressed state by 50%, from 14 to 7 days, whereas the mean duration to cellular death reduced more dramatically from 2.7 days to 6.5 hours. CONCLUSION: The proposed stochastic modeling approach can be used to discriminate between different biological hypotheses regarding the effect of a compound on the transition rates. The effects of different compounds on the transition rate estimates can be quantitatively compared. Data can be extrapolated at late measurement time points to investigate whether costs and time-consuming long-term experiments could possibly be eliminated.

Purpose of the study: Reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) controls laxity but does not enable restoration of strictly normal 3D kinematics. The purpose of this study was to compare the kinematics of the pathological knee with that of the healthy knee after ACL plasty. This study applied a new ambulatory system using miniature captors. Material and method: Five patients with an isolated injury of the ACL participated in this study. The patients were assessed after injury (T1), at five months (T2), and at 14 months (T3) after surgery. The assessment included laxity (KT-1000), the IKDC score and the Lysholm score. The 3D angles of the knees were measured when walking 30 m on flat ground using a system composed of to small inertia units (3D accelerometer and 3D gyroscope) and a portable recorder. Functional settings were optimised and validating to ensure easy precise measurement of the 3D angles. Symmetry of the two knees was quantified using a symmetry index (SI) (difference in amplitude normalised in relation to mean amplitude) and the correlation coefficient CC. Results: Clinical indicators improved during the follow-up (IKDC T1: 3C, 2C; T2: 5B; T3: 2A, 3B; subjective IKD: 53-95; Lysholm 67-96). Mean laxity improved from 8.6m to 2.5 mm. The gait analysis showed increased symmetry in terms of amplitude for flexion-extension (SI: −17% at T1, −1% at T2, 1% at T3), and an increase in symmetry in terms of the rotation signature (CC: 0.16 at T1, 0.99 at T2, 0.99 at T3). There was no trend to varus-valgus. Discussion: This study demonstrates the clinical application of the new ambulatory system for measuring 3D angles of the knee joint. Joint symmetry increased after ACL plasty but still showed some perturbation at 14 months. The results observed here are in agreement with the literature. Other patients and other types of gait are being analysed. Conclusion: This portable system allows gait analysis outside the laboratory, before and after ACL injury. It is very useful for follow-up after surgery.

This paper presents the implementation details of a coded structured light system for rapid shape acquisition of unknown surfaces. Such techniques are based on the projection of patterns onto a measuring surface and grabbing images of every projection with a camera. Analyzing the pattern deformations that appear in the images, 3D information of the surface can be calculated. The implemented technique projects a unique pattern so that it can be used to measure moving surfaces. The structure of the pattern is a grid where the color of the slits are selected using a De Bruijn sequence. Moreover, since both axis of the pattern are coded, the cross points of the grid have two codewords (which permits to reconstruct them very precisely), while pixels belonging to horizontal and vertical slits have also a codeword. Different sets of colors are used for horizontal and vertical slits, so the resulting pattern is invariant to rotation. Therefore, the alignment constraint between camera and projector considered by a lot of authors is not necessary

Atomic force microscope is an invaluable device to explore living specimens at a nanometric scale. It permits to image the topography of the sample in 3D, to measure its mechanical properties and to detect the presence of specific molecules bound on its surface. Here we describe the procedure to gather such a data set on living macrophages.

Xenobiotic exposure is a risk factor in the etiology of neurodegenerative disease. It was recently hypothesized that restricted exposure during brain development could predispose for a neurodegenerative disease later in life. As neuroinflammation contributes to progressive neurodegeneration, it is suspected that neurodevelopmental xenobiotic exposure could elicit a neuroinflammatory process, which over time may assume a detrimental character. We investigated the neurotoxic effects of paraquat (PQ) in three-dimensional whole rat brain cell cultures, exposed during an early differentiation stage, comparing immediate effects-directly post exposure-with long-term effects, 20 days after interrupted PQ-administration. Adverse effects and neuroinflammatory responses were assessed by measuring changes in gene- and protein-expression as well as by determining cell morphology changes. Differentiating neural cultures were highly susceptible to PQ and showed neuronal damage and strong astrogliosis. After the 20-day washout period, neurons partially recovered, whereas astrogliosis persisted, and was accompanied by microglial activation of a neurodegenerative phenotype. Our data shows that immediate and long-term effects of subchronic PQ-exposure differ. Also, PQ-exposure during this window of extensive neuronal differentiation led to a delayed microglial activation, of a character that could promote further pro-inflammatory signals that enable prolonged inflammation, thereby fueling further neurodegeneration.

PURPOSE: Proper delineation of ocular anatomy in 3-dimensional (3D) imaging is a big challenge, particularly when developing treatment plans for ocular diseases. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is presently used in clinical practice for diagnosis confirmation and treatment planning for treatment of retinoblastoma in infants, where it serves as a source of information, complementary to the fundus or ultrasonographic imaging. Here we present a framework to fully automatically segment the eye anatomy for MRI based on 3D active shape models (ASM), and we validate the results and present a proof of concept to automatically segment pathological eyes. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Manual and automatic segmentation were performed in 24 images of healthy children's eyes (3.29 ± 2.15 years of age). Imaging was performed using a 3-T MRI scanner. The ASM consists of the lens, the vitreous humor, the sclera, and the cornea. The model was fitted by first automatically detecting the position of the eye center, the lens, and the optic nerve, and then aligning the model and fitting it to the patient. We validated our segmentation method by using a leave-one-out cross-validation. The segmentation results were evaluated by measuring the overlap, using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and the mean distance error. RESULTS: We obtained a DSC of 94.90 ± 2.12% for the sclera and the cornea, 94.72 ± 1.89% for the vitreous humor, and 85.16 ± 4.91% for the lens. The mean distance error was 0.26 ± 0.09 mm. The entire process took 14 seconds on average per eye. CONCLUSION: We provide a reliable and accurate tool that enables clinicians to automatically segment the sclera, the cornea, the vitreous humor, and the lens, using MRI. We additionally present a proof of concept for fully automatically segmenting eye pathology. This tool reduces the time needed for eye shape delineation and thus can help clinicians when planning eye treatment and confirming the extent of the tumor.

3D-suunnittelujärjestelmät ovat tärkeitä työkaluja tuotetiedon luomista ja muokkaamista varten, joten niiden tehokas toiminta yhdessä tuotetiedonhallintajärjestelmien kanssa on erittäin tärkeää. 3D-suunnittelujärjestelmien kehityksen seurauksena 3D-malleihin voidaan sisällyttää entistä enemmän tuotetietoa, jolloin tehokas tiedon tallentaminen ja sen hallinta kasvattaa merkitystään. 3D-malleihin sisältyvää tietoa, kuten esimerkiksi kappaleen painoa tai geometriaa, halutaan myös tarkastella ilman tiettyä 3D-järjestelmää. Tuotetiedon hallinta on ollut jo pitkään tärkeä osa tuotteen suunnitteluprosessia. Tuotetiedon hallintaan sisältyy tiedon luomista, keräämistä ja muokkaamista koko tuotteen eliniän ajan. Näitä tietoja voivat olla esimerkiksi piirustukset, 3D-mallit, mittauspöytäkirjat, kokouspöytäkirjat, mallistoluettelot, lujuuslaskelmat, huoltoraportit jne. Tuotetiedonhallintajärjestelmä pitää huolta kaikesta tästä tiedosta ja sen kautta tuotteisiin liittyvää tietoa voidaan myös muokata ja jakaa tehokkaasti. Tässä diplomityössä tutkittiin näiden kahden järjestelmän integraation toteutusta erilaisilla menetelmillä. Työn tarkoituksena oli valita Valtra Oy:n tarkoituksiin parhaiten sopiva menetelmä tuotetiedon siirtämiseksi järjestelmien välillä tehokkaasti. Työn tuloksena annetaan suositus käytettävistä menetelmistä ja työkaluista.
