A simplified approach to a three-part Wiener-Hopf problem arising in diffraction theory

A direct and simple approach, utilizing Watson's lemma, is presented for obtaining an approximate solution of a three-part Wiener-Hopf problem associated with the problem of diffraction of a plane wave by a soft strip.

Novel species of fungi described in the present study include the following from Australia: Neoseptorioides eucalypti gen. & sp. nov. from Eucalyptus radiata leaves, Phytophthora gondwanensis from soil, Diaporthe tulliensis from rotted stem ends of Theobroma cacao fruit, Diaporthe vawdreyi from fruit rot of Psidium guajava, Magnaporthiopsis agrostidis from rotted roots of Agrostis stolonifera and Semifissispora natalis from Eucalyptus leaf litter. Furthermore, Neopestalotiopsis egyptiaca is described from Mangifera indica leaves (Egypt), Roussoella mexicana from Coffea arabica leaves (Mexico), Calonectria monticola from soil (Thailand), Hygrocybe jackmanii from littoral sand dunes (Canada), Lindgomyces madisonensis from submerged decorticated wood (USA), Neofabraea brasiliensis from Malus domestica (Brazil), Geastrum diosiae from litter (Argentina), Ganoderma wiiroense on angiosperms (Ghana), Arthrinium gutiae from the gut of a grasshopper (India), Pyrenochaeta telephoni from the screen of a mobile phone (India) and Xenoleptographium phialoconidium gen. & sp. nov. on exposed xylem tissues of Gmelina arborea (Indonesia). Several novelties are introduced from Spain, namely Psathyrella complutensis on loamy soil, Chlorophyllum lusitanicum on nitrified grasslands (incl. Chlorophyllum arizonicum comb. nov.), Aspergillus citocrescens from cave sediment and Lotinia verna gen. & sp. nov. from muddy soil. Novel foliicolous taxa from South Africa include Phyllosticta carissicola from Carissa macrocarpa, Pseudopyricularia hagahagae from Cyperaceae and Zeloasperisporium searsiae from Searsia chirindensis. Furthermore, Neophaeococcomyces is introduced as a novel genus, with two new combinations, N. aloes and N. catenatus. Several foliicolous novelties are recorded from La Réunion, France, namely Ochroconis pandanicola from Pandanus utilis, Neosulcatispora agaves gen. & sp. nov. from Agave vera-cruz, Pilidium eucalyptorum from Eucalyptus robusta, Strelitziana syzygii from Syzygium jambos (incl. Strelitzianaceae fam. nov.) and Pseudobeltrania ocoteae from Ocotea obtusata (Beltraniaceae emend.). Morphological and culture characteristics along with ITS DNA barcodes are provided for all taxa.

Structural and optical properties of nonpolar (11-20) a-plane GaN grown on (1-102) r-plane sapphire substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy

We report the structural and optical properties of a-plane GaN film grown on r-plane sapphire substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. High resolution X-ray diffraction was used to determine the out-of-plane and in-plane epitaxial relation of a-plane GaN to r-plane sapphire. Low-temperature photoluminescence emission was found to be dominated by basal stacking faults along with near-band emission. Raman spectroscopy shows that the a-GaN film is of reasonably good quality and compressively strained. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Bernardo Cabral (PMDB-PA), Relator da Comissão de Sistematização da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC) , reuniu-se com Ulysses Guimarães (PMDB-SP) e com os relatores auxiliares da Comissão de Sistematização e diz que ele escreverá o novo texto da carta constitucional, limpo e enxuto. Representantes de três nações indígenas levam denúncia à Constituinte. Reclamam que posseiros, garimpeiros e empresas de mineração estão invadindo as suas terras. Ailton Krenak, Coordenador da União das Nações Indígenas descreve como a invasão está sendo feita. Na sessão O Povo Pergunta, cidadã deseja saber o que vai mudar com a nova Constituição. Constituinte Vilson de Souza (PMDB-SC) responde que a futura Constituição deverá mudar o Brasil, tornando-o um país livre e independente voltado para o seu desenvolvimento, mas que há entraves. A Comissão do Sistema Tributário propõe maiores recursos aos municípios: 50% dos impostos arrecadados sobre as propriedades rurais; 50% do IPVA; 25% do ICM; 25% do ISS. Já o Fundo de Participação dos Municípios será ampliado para 22,5% do total recolhido pela União . Os constituintes Darci Deitos (PMDB-PR), Paulo Pimentel (PFL-PR) e Osmar Lima (PMDB-AC) defendem que a descentralização de renda é fundamental para o desenvolvimento regional.

O projeto de Constituição já aprovado consagra o sistema Parlamentarista de governo como o melhor para o país. Foi considerado assim no trâmite até chegar à Comissão de Sistematização. Agora à espera do Plenário Geral, dividem-se as discussões nos diversos grupos que compõem a Constituinte. As opções são: Parlamentarismo já com 5 anos; Parlamentarismo gradual com 5 anos; Presidencialismo puro com 5 anos; Parlamentarismo já com 4 anos; Parlamentarismo gradual com 4 anos. Nem todos aprovam um Presidencialismo puro. Alguns defendem um Presidencialismo com o Congresso fortalecido. Os Parlamentaristas acham que o povo necessita conhecer melhor o Parlamentarismo, necessitando promover o debate nacional.

Waterfowl and their role in lake ecosystems. [Translation from: Wiadomosci Ekologiczne 19, 355-371, 1973.]

We know very little about the role of birds in different ecosystems, despite numerous interesting works of researchers and amateur ornithologist scattered throughout the world. Less attention is paid to freshwater ecosystems because of the difficulties encountered in the experimental methods as well as a lack of interest on behalf of hydrobiologists, for the activities of birds in these ecosystems. This article summarises types and morphoecological forms of waterfowl and their place in the lake ecosystem.

The translation of this section of the larger publication ”Opredelitel' presnovodnykh bespozvonochnykh evropeiskoi chasti SSSR. (Plankton i bentos)” provides identification keys to the larvae and pupae of chironomids that occur in the Soviet Union. The morphology of the larvae of Chironomidae is described in the introductory part.

Experimental research on the development of Ceratium hirundinella O.F.Muller [Translation from: Z.Bot. 14, 337-371, 1922]

The most important aim of this study lay in filling in the great gap in our knowledge of the processes of germination in the Ceratium cyst and the early developmental stages in the standing stock of Ceratium hirundinella. contained rich cysts, we now succeeded extraordinarily well in pursuing the consistent development of Ceratium from the cyst to the completed cell. A series of experiments were carried out on the cysts and the juvenile stages of Ceratium, which showed very interesting results. The author presents in a general descriptive part the normal processes of germination in Ceratium cysts and the development of the juvenile stages in order to show in an experimental part the changes in form of C. hirundinella under the influence of temperature, light and varying salinities.
