ACE research vignette 013 : does policy for women's entrepreneurship promote gender equality, or not?

This series of research vignettes is aimed at sharing current and interesting research findings from our team and other international Entrepreneurship researchers. In this vignette, Professor Helene Ahl from Jonkoping University considers the consequences for gender equality of policy for women's entrepreneurship in two countries with distinctly different welfare state regimes.

Ghost hunting with lollies, chess and Lego : appreciating the ‘messy’ complexity (and costs) of doing difficult research in education

This paper contributes to conversations about the funding and quality of education research. The paper proceeds in two parts. Part I sets the context by presenting an historical analysis of funding allocations made to Education research through the ARC’s Discovery projects scheme between the years 2002 and 2014, and compares these trends to allocations made to another field within the Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences assessment panel: Psychology and Cognitive Science. Part II highlights the consequences of underfunding education research by presenting evidence from an Australian Research Council Discovery project that is tracking the experiences of disaffected students who are referred to behaviour schools. The re-scoping decisions that became necessary and the incidental costs that accrue from complications that occur in the field are illustrated and discussed through vignettes of research with “ghosts” who don’t like school but who do like lollies, chess and Lego.

A Comissão da Ordem Econômica da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC) tem a função de propor um novo modelo econômico brasileiro. Os constituintes terão que definir o papel do Estado na economia. Muitos acham que o Estado deve ter um controle direto sobre o desenvolvimento do país, outros que a iniciativa privada é a base de sustentação do avanço econômico brasileiro. O Senador Severo Gomes (PMDB-SP), relator da Comissão da Ordem Econômica, defende a modernização com o aperfeiçoamento de algumas questões para que a futura Constituição tenha um caráter progressista com a visão voltada para a maioria da população. A Comissão é dividida em três Subcomissões: De Princípios Gerais, Intervenção do Estado, Regime da Propriedade, do Subsolo e da Atividade Econômica; Da Questão Urbana e Transporte, e Da Política Agrícola e Fundiária e da Reforma Agrária. O Deputado José Lins (PFL-CE) disse que o importante é a produção da terra. Severo Gomes (PMDB-SP) acredita que a nova Constituição irá traduzir o pensamento do povo brasileiro.

A bancada de Brasília na Constituinte quer o consenso em torno das eleições para eleger o primeiro governador da cidade. Todos concordam com a autonomia política já aprovada na Comissão de Sistematização. Ainda não há consenso porém em torno da data das eleições. Falta definir se serão em 1988, 1989 ou 1990. O Plenário da Constituinte voltou a se reunir esta tarde para discutir a mudança do Regimento. Desta vez será discutido o projeto apresentado pela Mesa e que incorpora as propostas já votadas pelo Centrão. Tanto o PMDB como o Centrão já fizeram acordo em torno de 90% da proposta da Mesa. Mas a questão da Preferência ainda é problema. O PMDB não concorda com preferência automática para emendas substitutivas com 280 assinaturas. A posição do Centrão é de insistir na preferência automática. O novo Regimento irá valer para a etapa final da Constituinte.

The VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars: NGC 346-013 as a test case for massive close binary evolution

Context. NGC 346-013 is a peculiar double-lined eclipsing binary in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) discovered by the VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars.

Gold nanoparticle cellular uptake, toxicity and radiosensitisation in hypoxic conditions

Background and purpose: Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are novel agents that have been shown to cause radiosensitisation in vitro and in vivo. Tumour hypoxia is associated with radiation resistance and reduced survival in cancer patients. The interaction of GNPs with cells in hypoxia is explored.

Materials and methods: GNP uptake, localization, toxicity and radiosensitisation were assessed in vitro under oxic and hypoxic conditions.

Results: GNP cellular uptake was significantly lower under hypoxic than oxic conditions. A significant reduction in cell proliferation in hypoxic MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells exposed to GNPs was observed. In these cells significant radiosensitisation occurred in normoxia and moderate hypoxia. However, in near anoxia no significant sensitisation occurred.

Conclusions: GNP uptake occurred in hypoxic conditions, causing radiosensitisation in moderate, but not extreme hypoxia in a breast cancer cell line. These findings may be important for the development of GNPs for cancer therapy.

Lineations and comet structures are the most common micro-structures present in this sample. Edge-to-edge grain crushing, as well as crushed grains, can also be seen.

Macrophage suppression following phagocytosis of apoptotic neutrophils is mediated by the S100A9 calcium-binding protein

The clearance of apoptotic cells by phagocytes is a fundamental process during tissue remodeling and resolution of inflammation. In turn, the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells generates signals that suppress pro-inflammatory activation of macrophages. These events occur during the resolution phase of inflammation and therefore the malfunctioning of this process may lead to inflammation-related tissue damage. Here, we demonstrate that the calcium-binding protein S100A9, normally abundant in the cytoplasm of neutrophils and also released by apoptotic neutrophils, is involved in the suppression of macrophages after the uptake of apoptotic neutrophils. Both, spontaneous and induced production of inflammatory species (nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide and TNF-alpha) as well as the phagocytic activity were inhibited when macrophages were in presence of apoptotic neutrophils, conditioned medium from neutrophil cultures or a peptide corresponding to the C-terminal region of S100A9 protein. On the other hand, macrophages kept in the conditioned medium of neutrophils that was previously depleted of S100A9 were shown to resume the activated status. Finally, we demonstrate that the calcium-binding property of S100A9 might play a role in the suppression process, since the stimulation of intracellular calcium release with ionomycin significantly reversed the effects of the uptake of apoptotic neutrophils in macrophages. In conclusion, we propose that S100A9 is a novel component of the regulatory mechanisms of inflammation, acting side-by-side with other suppressor factors generated upon ingestion of apoptotic cells.
