A simple and convenient synthesis of 3-methylene-4-aryl-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-benzo[b][1,4] diazepin-2-ones was accomplished by the SN2 nucleophilic substitution of the acetates of Baylis-Hillman adducts of acrylate with 1,2-phenylenediamines followed by base-mediated intramolecular cyclization. On the other hand similar substrates derived from the Baylis-Hillman adducts of acrylonitrile via Pinner’s reaction leads to 3-arylmethylene-4,5-dihydro-3H-benzo[b][1,4]diazepin-2-ylamines in good yields..

Multi-component reactions are effective in building complex molecules in a single step in a minimum amount of time and with facile isolation procedures; they have high economy1–7 and thus have become a powerful synthetic strategy in recent years.8–10 The multicomponent protocols are even more attractive when carried out in aqueous medium. Water offers several benefits, including control over exothermicity, and the isolation of products can be carried out by single phase separation technique. Pyranopyrazoles are a biologically important class of heterocyclic compounds and in particular dihydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles play an essential role in promoting biological activity and represent an interesting template in medicinal chemistry. Heterocyclic compounds bearing the 4-H pyran unit have received much attention in recent years as they constitute important precursors for promising drugs.11–13 Pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles exhibit analgesic,14 anti-cancer,15 anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory16 activity. Furthermore dihydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles show molluscidal activity17,18 and are used in a screening kit for Chk 1 kinase inhibitor activity.19,20 They also find applications as pharmaceutical ingredients and bio-degradable agrochemicals.21–29 Junek and Aigner30 first reported the synthesis of pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives from 3-methyl-1-phenylpyrazolin-5-one and tetracyanoethylene in the presence of triethylamine. Subsequently, a number of synthetic approaches such as the use of triethylamine,31 piperazine,32 piperidine,33 N-methylmorpholine in ethanol,34 microwave irradiation,35,36 solvent-free conditions,37–39 cyclodextrins (CDs),40 different bases in water,41 γ -alumina,42 and l-proline43 have been reported for the synthesis of 6-amino-4-alkyl/aryl-3-methyl- 2,4-dihydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole-5-carbonitriles. Recently, tetraethylammonium bromide (TEABr) has emerged as mild, water-tolerant, eco-friendly and inexpensive catalyst. To the best of our knowledge, quaternary ammonium salts, more specifically TEABr, have notbeen used as catalysts for the synthesis of pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles, and we decided to investigate the application of TEABr as a catalyst for the synthesis of a series of pyrazole-fused pyran derivatives via multi-component reactions

Reaction of K-3[Cr(ox)(3)] (ox = oxalate) with nickel(II) and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) in aqueous solution resulted in isolation of the bimetallic assembly [Ni-3(tren)(4)(H2O)(2)][Cr(ox)(3)](2). 6H(2)O. The polymeric complex {[Ni-2(tren)(3)][ClO4](4). H2O}(n) has been prepared by reaction of nickel(II) perchlorate and tren in aqueous solution. From the same reaction mixture the complex [Ni-2(tren)(2)(aepd)][ClO4](4). 2H(2)O (aepd = N-(2-aminoethyl)pyrrolidine-3,4-diamine), in which a bridging tren ligand contains a carbon-carbon bond between two arms forming a substituted pyrrolidine, has been isolated. The complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic susceptibility (300-4.2 K) and magnetization data (2, 4 K, H = 0-5 T) for {[Ni-2(tren)(3)][ClO4](4). H2O}(n) (300 K , 4.23 mu(B)) exhibit evidence of weak antiferromagnetic coupling and zero field splitting (2J = -1.8 cm(-1); \ D\ = 2 cm(-1)) at low temperature. For [Ni-3(tren)(4)(H2O)(2)][Cr(ox)(3)](2). 6H(2)O the susceptibility data at 300 K are indicative of uncoupled nickel(II) and chromium(III) sites with zero-field splitting and intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling predicted at low temperature.

The synthesis and crystal structure (at 100K) of the title compound, Cs[Fe(C11H13N3O2S2) 2] CH3OH, is reported. The asymmetric unit consists of an octahedral [FeIII(L)2]- fragment, where L 2- is 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde 4-methylthiosemicarbazonate(2-) {systematic name: [2-(3-ethoxy-2-oxidobenzylidene)hydrazin-1-ylidene] (methylamino)methanethiolate}, a caesium cation and a methanol solvent molecule. Each L2- ligand binds through the thiolate S, the imine N and the phenolate O atoms as donors, resulting in an FeIIIS2N 2O2 chromophore. The O,N,S-coordinating ligands are orientated in two perpendicular planes, with the O and S atoms in cis positions and the N atoms in trans positions. The FeIII cation is in the low-spin state at 100K. © 2014 International Union of Crystallography.

Recent studies have shown that the rhodium (II) acetate decomposition chemistry observed for a-diazoketones tethered to thienyl, furanyl, and benzofuranyl moieties is dependent not only on the nature of the heteroatom but also on the length of the aliphatic tether linking the diazoketone moiety with the aromatic fragment. The present thesis expands on these results and focuses on a-diazoketones tethered to benzothiophenes, pyrroles and indoles by a methylene linker. In the case of benzothiophenes, it was shown that the rhodium catalyst decomposition of I-diazo-4-(3-benzothienyl)-2-butanone (146) and 1-diazo-4-(3benzothienyl)- 2-butanone (152) allow for the isolation of 1,2,3a,3b-tetrahydro-3Hbenzo[ b]cyclopenta[1,3]cyclopropa- [1 ,2-d]thiophen-3-one (147) and 1,2,3a,3btetrahydro- 3H-benzo[b]cyclopenta[1,3]cyclopropa[1,2-d]thiophen-3-one (153). However treatment of 1-diazo-3-(3-Benzothienyl)-2-Propanone (165) with Rh(II) acetate results in the formation of 2,3-Dihydro-1H-benzo[b]cyclopenta[d]thiophen-2-one (159), while 1diazo- 3-(2-Benzothienyl)-2-Propanone with the same condition gives 5,5-bis( 1benzothiophen- 2-ylmethyl)-2(5H)-furanone (166) along with the tricycle 159. The chemistry of the pyrrolyl and the indolyl moieties linked to terminal adiazoketone systems was also investigated. The decomposition of I-diazo-(2-pyrrolyl)-2propanone (173) results in the formation of two products; the N-H insertion product IHpyrrolizin- 2(3H)-one (176) and the alkylation product 4,6-dihydrocyclopenta[b]pyrrol5( 1 H)-one (180). When 1-Diazo-3-(3-indoly)-3-propanone (194) is treated with catalytic amount of Rh (II) 3,4-dihydrocyclopenta[b]indol-2(1H)-one (193) is isolated quantitatively. The later reaction when monitored using IH NMR the intermediate 200 can be seen whose structure was confirmed by the comparison to series of model compounds. The mechanisms underlying these reactions as well as their synthetic utility is discussed.

Three new zinc(II)-hexamethylenetetramine (hmt) complexes [Zn-2(4-nbz)(4)(mu(2)-hmt)(OH2)(hmt)] (1). [Zn-2(2-nbz)(4)(mu(2)-hmt)(2)](n) (2) and [Zn-3(3-nbz)(4)(mu(2)-hmt)(mu(2)-OH)(mu(3)-OH)](n) (3) with three isomeric nitrobenzoate, [4-nbz = 4-nitrobenzoate, 2-nbz = 2-nitrobenzoate and 3-nbz = 3-nitrobenzoate] have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Their identities have also been established by elemental analysis: IR, NMR, UV-Vis and mass spectral studies. 1 is a dinuclear complex formed by bridging hmt with mu(2) coordinating mode. The geometry around the Zn centers in 1 is distorted tetrahedral. Paddle-wheel centrosymmetric Zn-2(2-nbz)(4) units of complex 2 are interconnected by mu(2)-hmt forming a one-dimensional chain with square-pyramidal geometries around the Zn centers. Compound 3 contains a mu(2)/mu(3)-hydroxido and mu(2)-hmt bridged 1D chain. In this complex, varied geometries around the Zn centers are observed viz, tetrahedral, square pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal. Various weak forces, i.e. lone pair-pi, pi-pi and CH-pi interactions, play a key role in stabilizing the observed structures for complexes 1,2 and 3. This series of complexes demonstrates that although the nitro group does not coordinate to the metal center, its presence at the 2-, 3- or 4-position of the phenyl ring has a striking effect on the dimensionality as well as the structure of the resulted coordination polymers, probably due to the participation of the nitro group in 1.p.center dot center dot center dot pi and/or C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions.

This Letter presents the first strong evidence for the resolution of the excited B mesons B-1 and B-2(*) as two separate states in fully reconstructed decays to B+(*())pi(-). The mass of B-1 is measured to be 5720.6 +/- 2.4 +/- 1.4 MeV/c(2) and the mass difference Delta M between B-2* and B-1 is 26.2 +/- 3.1 +/- 0: 9 MeV/c(2), giving the mass of the B-2* as 5746.8 +/- 2.4 +/- 1.7 MeV/c(2). The production rate for B-1 and B-2* mesons is determined to be a fraction (13.9 +/- 1.9 +/- 3.2)% of the production rate of the B+ meson.

INTRODUCTION. NAVA is a new spontaneous-assisted ventilatory mode based on thedetection of diaphragmatic electrical activity (Eadi) and its feedback to adjust ventilatorsettings. NAVA uses the Eadi, an expression of the respiratory center's activity, to initiatepressurization, set the level of pressure support and cycle the ventilator into exhalation. Therefore, NAVA should theoretically allow near-perfect synchronization between the patientand the ventilator. However there are few data documenting these effects in intensive carepatients.OBJECTIVES. To determine whether NAVA can improve patient-ventilator synchronycompared to standard pressure support (PS) in intubated intensive care patients.METHODS. Comparative study of patient-ventilator interaction during PS with cliniciandetermined ventilator settings and NAVA with NAVA gain (proportionality factor betweenEadi and the amount of delivered inspiratory pressure) set as to obtain the same peak airwaypressure as the total pressure obtained in PS. A 20 min continuous recording with eachventilatory mode was performed allowing determination of trigger delay (Td), patient neuralinspiratory time (Tin), duration of pressurization by the ventilator (Tiv), excess durationof pressurization (Ti excess = Tiv - Tin/Tin 9 100) and number of asynchrony events byminute: non-triggering breaths, auto-triggering, double triggering, premature and delayedcycling. Results are given in mean ± SD. p is considered significant if\0.05.RESULTS. Preliminary results (mean ± SD): five patients (age 75 ± 12 years, 1 M/4F,BMI 25.7 ± 4.1 kg m-2), two pts with COPD, 1 with restrictive disease, initial settings: PS14.6 ± 1.7 cm H2O, PEEP 6.4 ± 1.5 cm H2O, NAVA gain 2.8 ± 1.3PS NAVA % reduction NAVAversus PSTd (ms) 210.4 ± 63.0 51.8 ± 12.1* 74.5 ± 5.0Ti excess (%) 12.9 ± 19.6 2.2 ± 0.6 70.8 ± 37.8n asynchrony/minute 7.6 ± 6.4 4.1 ± 3.7* 47.5 ± 17.0Respiratory rate (min-1) 16.8 ± 2.6 20.4 ± 4.7 NA* p\0.05CONCLUSION. Compared to standard PS, NAVA improves patient ventilator interaction byreducing Td and the overall incidence of asynchrony events. There is also a strong trend inreducing delayed cycling. This ongoing trial should provide evidence that NAVA can indeedimprove patient-ventilator synchrony in intubated patients undergoing PS.REFERENCE(S). 1.
