A series of new dicationic dihydrogen complexes of ruthenium of the type cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(eta(2)-H-2)(L)][BF4](2) (dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2; L = P(OMe)(3), P(OEt)(3), PF((OPr)-Pr-i)(2)) have been prepared by protonating the precursor hydride complexes cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] (L = P(OMe)(3), P(OEt)(3), P((OPr)-Pr-i)(3)) using HBF4.Et2O. The cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] complexes were obtained from the trans hydrides via an isomerization reaction that is acid-accelerated. This isomerization reaction gives mixtures of cis and trans hydride complexes, the ratios of which depend on the cone angles of the phosphite ligands: the greater the cone angle, the greater is the amount of the cis isomer. The eta(2)-H-2 ligand in the dihydrogen complexes is labile, and the loss of H-2 was found to be reversible. The protonation reactions of the starting hydrides with trans PMe3 or PMe2Ph yield mixtures of the cis and the trans hydride complexes; further addition of the acid, however, give trans-[(dPPM)(2)Ru(BF4)Cl]. The roles of the bite angles of the dppm ligand as well as the steric and the electronic properties of the monodentate phosphorus ligands in this series of complexes are discussed. X-ray crystal structures of trans-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(P(OMe)(3))][BF4], cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru-(H)(P(OMe)(3))][BF4], and cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(P((OPr)-Pr-i)(3))][BF4] complexes have been determined.

Three coordination complexes of Co(II)/Fe(II) with 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (bpp) and pseudohalides (SCN-, SeCN- and N-3(-)) have been synthesized. The complexes have been characterized by X-ray single crystal structure determination. They are isomorphous having 2D layers in which two independent wavy nets display parallel interwoven structures. Pseudohalide binds metal centers through N terminal and occupies the trans axial positions of the octahedral metal coordination environment. Pseudohalide remains pendant on both sides of the polymeric layer and help the stacking through hydrogen bonding. The conformation of bpp in the interpenetrated nets is observed to be dependent on the choice of pseudohalide. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Structural and magnetic characterization of compound {[Ni-2(L)(2)(OAC)(2)][Ni-3(L)(2) (OAc)(4)]) center dot 2CH(3)CN (3) (HL = the tridentate Schiff base ligand, 2-[(3-methylaminb-propylimino)-methyl]-phenol) shows that it is a rare example of a crystal incorporating a dinuclear Ni(II) compound, [Ni-2(L)(2)(OAc)(2)], and a trinuclear one, [Ni-3(L)(2)(OAC)(4)]. Even more unusual is the fact that both Ni (II) complexes, [Ni-2(L)(2)(OAc)(2)] (1) and [Ni-3(L)(2)(OAc)(4)(H2O)(2)] center dot CH2Cl2 center dot 2CH(3)OH (2), have also been isolated and structurally and magnetically characterized. The structural analysis reveals that the dimeric complexes [Ni-2(L)(2)(OAc)(2)] in cocrystal 3 and in compound 1 are almost identical-in both complexes, the Ni(II) ions possess a distorted octahedral geometry formed by the chelating tridentate ligand (L), a chelating acetate ion, and a bridging phenoxo group with very similar bond angles and distances. On the other hand, compound 2 and the trinuclear complex in the cocrystal 3 show a similar linear centrosymmetric structure with the tridentate ligand coordinated to the terminal Ni(II) and linked to the central Ni(II) by phenoxo and carboxylate bridges. The only difference is that a water molecule found in 2 is not present in the trinuclear unit of complex 3; instead, the coordination sphere is completed by an additional bridging oxygen atom from an acetate ligand. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show that the dinuclear unit is antiferromagnetically coupled in both compounds (2J = -36.18 and -29.5 cm(-1) in 1 and 3, respectively), whereas the trinuclear unit shows a very weak ferromagnetic coupling in compound 3 (2J = 0.23 cm(-1)) and a weak antiferromagnetic coupling in 2 (2J = -8.7(2) cm(-1)) due to the minor changes in the coordination sphere.

In this conference we report cross sections for elastic collisions of low-energy electrons with the HCOOH…(H2O)n complexes, with n = 1, 2 and 3. The scattering cross sections were computed with the Schwinger multichannel method [K. Takatsuka and V. McKoy, Phys. Rev. A 24 , 2473 (1981); Phys. Rev. A 30 , 1734 (1984)] with pseudopotentials [M. H. F. Bettega, L. G. Ferreira, and M. A. P. Lima, Phys. Rev. A 47, 1111 (1993)] in the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization approximations, for energies from 0.5 eV to 6 eV. We considered some diÆerent hydrogen-bonded structures for the complexes that were generated with classical Monte Carlo simulations [K. Coutinho and S. Canuto, J. Chem. Phys. 113, 9132, (2000)]. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of the surrounding water molecules on the π* shape resonance of the solute. Previous theoretical and experimental studies carried out in the gas phase reported a π* state for HCOOH at around 1.9 eV. For the n = 1 case and for all complexes, the stabilization of the resonance was observed (it appears at lower energy compared to the value obtained in the gas phase), as reported previously for the CH2O…H2O complexes [T. C. Freitas, M. A. P. Lima, S. Canuto, and M. H. F. Bettega, Phys. Rev. A 80, 062710 (2009)]. This result indicates that the presence of the solvent may affect the processes related to the π* state, such as the molecular dissociation by electron impact. For the n = 2 case we have observed both stabilization and destabilization of the π* resonance, that is associated with the hydrogen bond donor or acceptor role of the water molecules in the complexes. For the n = 3 case, preliminary static-exchange results show the stabilization of the π* state. We propose an explanation of the stabilization/destabilization of the π* state in terms of the polarization of the solute due to the surrounding water molecules and the net charge in the solute.

Fabrication and electroluminescent properties of devices containing europium complexes of general formula [Eu(ACIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)], where ACIND, 2-acyl-1,3-indandionate ligands: and TPPO, triphenylphosphine oxide. as emitter layers are discussed. The double-layer devices based on these complexes present the following configurations: device 1: ITO/TPD/[Eu(AlND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al: device 2: ITO/TPD/[Eu(ISOV-IND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al and device 3: ITO/TPD/[Eu(BIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al, where AlND, 2-acetyl-1,3-indandionate; ISOVIND, 2-isovaleryl-1,3-indandionate; and BIND, 2-benzoyl-1,3-indandionate, respectively. These devices exhibited photo and electroluminescent emissions. An important characteristic presented by devices is that their electroluminescent (EL) spectra, in the region of (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4) transitions of Eu(3+) ion, show profiles that are different from photoluminescent (PL) ones. In addition to narrow bands arising from intraconfigurational-4f(6) transitions, devices 1 and 2 also exhibited a broad band with maximum at around 500 nm which is assigned to electrophosphorescence from the indandionate ligands. On the other hand, EL spectra of device 3 present only narrow bands from (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) transitions. [Eu(ACIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)] complexes are promising candidates to prepare efficient organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) when compared with those containing Eu(3+)-complexes of aliphatic beta-diketonate anions. Adducts of lanthanide perchlorates with 4-nitro and 4-chloro pyridine-Noxides (4-NPNO and 4-CPNO respectively) have been synthesised for the first time and characterised by analysis, electrolytic conductance, infrared, proton-NMR and electronic spectral data. The complexes are of the compositions Ln2(NPNO)15 (ClO4)6 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd and Gd), Tb(NPNO), (C1O4)6), Ln2(NPNO)13 (C1O4)6) (Ln = Dy, Ho, and Yb); Ln (CPNO)8 (C104)3) (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Yb) and Ln(CPNO), (C1O4)3) (Ln = Sm and Gd). Conductivity and IR data provide evidence for the non-coordinated nature of the perchlorate groups. IR and NMR spectra suggest coordinationvia the oxygen of the N-oxide group. Electronic spectral shapes of the Nd+3 and Ho+3 complexes are interpreted in terms of eight-and seven-coordinate environments in the case of 4-NPNO complexes and eight-coordination in the case of 4-CPNO complexes. IR data indicate bridged structure in NPNO complexes of lanthanides other than Tb.

A novel mesoporous material covalently bonded with 8-hydroxyquinoline (HQ) was synthesized (designated as Q-SBA-15). The 5-formyl-8-hydroxyquinoline grafted to.(3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane, that is, alkoxysilane modified 8-hydroxyquinoline (Q-Si), was used as one of the precursors for the preparation of the Q-SBA-15 material. On the basis of the other function of the Q-Si of coordinating to lanthanide (Ln) ions, for the first time, the LnQ(3) complexes (Ln = Er, Nd, Yb) have been covalently bonded to the SBA-15 materials.

Reactions of Rh and Ir hydrido complexes. [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(solv)(EtOH)]ClO4 (solv = Me2CO, 1a; EtOH, 1b) and [Ir(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(Me2CO)(2)]BF4 (2), with various N,N'-donor bridging ligands, such as pyrazine (pyz), 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (tmdp) and di(4-pyridyl) disulfide (dpds), in some solvents were examined, and their reaction products were characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis. IR, H-1 NMR and UV-vis spectra. Rh hydrido complexes, la or 1b, formed a dinuclear Rh complex, [Rh-2(PPh3)(2) {(eta(6)-C6H5PPh2}(2)] (ClO4)(2).6CH(2)Cl(2) (3.6CH(2)Cl(2)), in dichloromethane with a reductive elimination of hydrogen. The reactions of 1a or 1b with the pyz ligand in dichloromethane and tetrahydrofuran gave triangular Rh-3 complexes, [Rh-3(PPh3)(6)(pyz)(3)](ClO4)(3).CH2Cl2 (5.CH2Cl2) and [Rh-3(PPh3)(6)(pyz)(3)](ClO4)(3).EtOH (5.EtOH), respectively, in contrast to the formation of a dinuclear Rh hydrido complex, [Rh-2(H)(4)(PPh3)(4)(Me2CO)(2)(pyz)](ClO4)(2).EtOH A-EtOH). in acetone. The reactions of la or 1b with the tmdp ligand in dichloromethane and 3-methyl-2-butanone also afforded dinuclear Rh complexes, [Rh-2(PPh3)(4)(tmdp)(2)](ClO4)(2) (6) and [Rh-2(PPh3)(4)(tmdp)(2)](ClO4)(2).4MeCOCHMe(2) (6.4MeCOCHMe(2)), respectively. On the other hand, Ir hydrido complex 2 reacted with pyz and dpds ligands in dichloromethane to afford dinuclear Ir complexes, [Ir-2(H)(4)(PPh3)(4)(Me2CO)(2)(pyz)]- (BF4)(2).3CH(2)Cl(2) (7.3CH(2)Cl(2)) and [Ir-2(H)(4)(PPh3)(4)(dpds)(2)](BF4)(2).3CH(2)Cl(2).H2O (8.3CH(2)Cl(2).H2O), respectively, without any reductive elimination of hydrogen. Based on structural studies in solution and in the solid state. it was demonstrated that various Rh and Ir complexes were selectively produced depending on the choice of solvents and N,N'-donor bridging ligands.

Reaction of NdCl3, with AlCl3 and mesitylene in benzene gives complex [Nd(eta (6)-1,3,5-C6H3Me3) (AlCl4)(3)] (C6H6) (1) which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, MS and X-lay diffractions. The X-ray determination indicates that 1 has a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry and crystallizes in the monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n with a = 0.9586(2), b = 1.1717(5), c = 2.8966(7) nm, beta = 90.85 (2)degrees, V = 3.2529(6) nm(3), D-c = 1.573 g/cm(3), Z = 4. A comparison of bond parameters for all the reported Ln(eta (6)-Ar) (AlCl4)(3) complexes indicates that the bond distance of Ln-C is shortened with the increasing of methyl group on benzene and with the decreasing of radius of lanthanide ions.

Three kinds of copper(II) azide complexes have been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2) . 6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (L-1); N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-dimethylethylenediamine (L-2); and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-diethylethylenediamine (L-3), respectively, in the presence of slight excess of sodium azide. They are the monomeric Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4) (1), the end-to-end diazido-bridged Cu-2(L-2)(2)(mu-1,3-N-3)(2)(ClO4)(2) (2) and the single azido-bridged (mu-1,3-) 1D chain [Cu(L-3)(mu-1,3-N-3)](n)(ClO4)(n) (3). The crystal and molecular structures of these complexes have been solved. The variable temperature magnetic moments of type 2 and type 3 complexes were studied. Temperature dependent susceptibility for 2 was fitted using the Bleaney-Bowers expression which led to the parameters J = -3.43 cm(-1) and R = 1 X 10(-5). The magnetic data for 3 were fitted to Baker's expression for S = 1/2 and the parameters obtained were J = 1.6 cm(-1) and R = 3.2 x 10(-4). Crystal data are as follows. Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula, C12H13ClN6O4Cu; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 8.788(12), b = 13.045(15), c = 14.213(15) Angstrom; beta = 102.960(10)degrees; Z = 4. Cu(L-2)(mu-N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula. C10H17ClN6O4Cu: crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 10.790(12), b = 8.568(9), c = 16.651(17) Angstrom; beta = 102.360(10)degrees; Z = 4. [Cu(L-3)(mu-N-3)](ClO4): Chemical formula, C12H21ClN6O4Cu; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 12.331(14), b = 7.804(9), c = 18.64(2) Angstrom; beta = 103.405(10)degrees; Z = 4. The new ligand 6,6 ''-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-1,2,4-benzotriazin-3-yl)2,2':6 ',2 ''-terpyridine (CyMe4-BTTP) has been synthesized in 4 steps from 2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine. Detailed NMR and mass spectrometry studies indicate that the ligand forms 1 : 2 complexes with lanthanide(III) perchlorates where the aliphatic rings are conformationally constrained whereas 1 : 1 complexes are formed with lanthanide(III) nitrates where the rings are conformationally mobile. An optimized structure of the 1 : 2 solution complex with Yb(III) was obtained from the relative magnitude of the induced paramagnetic shifts. X-Ray crystallographic structures of the ligand and of its 1 : 1 complex with Y(III) were also obtained. The NMR and mass spectra of [Pd(CyMe4-BTTP)](n)(2n+) are consistent with a dinuclear double helical structure (n = 2). In the absence of a phase-modifier, CyMe4-BTTP in n-octanol showed a maximum distribution coefficient of Am(III) of 0.039 (+/-20%) and a maximum separation factor of Am(III) over Eu(III) of 12.0 from nitric acid. The metal(III) cations are extracted as the 1 : 1 complex from nitric acid. The generally low distribution coefficients observed compared with the BTBPs arise because the 1 : 1 complex of CyMe4-BTTP is considerably less hydrophobic than the 1 : 2 complexes formed by the BTBPs. In M(BTTP)(3+) complexes, there is a competition between the nitrate ions and the ligand for the complexation of the metal.

Four new trinuclear hetero-metallic nickel(II)-cadmium(II) complexes [(NiL)(2)Cd(NCS)(2)] (1A and 1B), [(NiL)(2)Cd(NCO)(2)] (2) and [(NiL)(2)Cd(N-3)(2)] (3) have been synthesized using [NiL] as a so-called "ligand complex" (where H2L = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine) and structurally characterized. Crystal structure analyses reveal that all four complexes contain a trinuclear moiety in which two square planar [NiL] units are bonded to a central cadmium(II) ion through double phenoxido bridges. The Cd(II) is in a six-coordinate distorted octahedral environment being bonded additionally to two mutually cis nitrogen atoms of terminal thiocyanate (in 1A and 1B), cyanate (in 2) and azide (in 3). Complexes 1A and 1B have the same molecular formula but crystallize in very different monoclinic unit cells and can be considered as polymorphs. On the other hand, the two isoelectronic complexes 2 and 3 are indeed isomorphous and crystallize only in one form. Their conformation is similar to that observed in 1A.

Given a model 2-complex K(P) of a group presentation P, we associate to it an integer matrix Delta(P) and we prove that a cellular map f : K(P) -> S(2) is root free (is not strongly surjective) if and only if the diophantine linear system Delta(P) Y = (deg) over right arrow (f) has an integer solution, here (deg) over right arrow (f) is the so-called vector-degree of f
