The Southern Marion Plateau (SMP) represents a vertical stacking of Miocene carbonate platform deposits. Two sites (1196 and 1199) were drilled on top of this plateau, penetrating a 663-m carbonate succession of bioclastic and reefal sedimentary bodies. The study focuses on the least dolomitized 410-m-thick upper part of the succession, which is middle to late Miocene in age. Sedimentological and paleontological studies were conducted at both sites in order to propose a paleoenvironmental model and its evolution through the Miocene age. Six main microfacies of possible environmental significance were defined using statistical multivariate analyses, based on the recognition and point counting of 24 biogenic components. Depositional environment reconstructions are proposed as well as the biosedimentary and the environmental evolution regarding seismic architectures, stratigraphy, biosedimentology, and microfacies analysis. The SMP platform mainly results from a vertical stacking of lens-shaped bodies in homoclinal to distally steepened ramp settings.

We report analyses of porosity and permeability of core samples from Site 1193 in the Northern Marion Platform, Sites 1196 and 1199 in the Southern Marion Platform, and Sites 1194, 1195, 1197, and 1198 from the slopes of these platforms. The samples include 415 horizontal 1-in plugs, 290 vertical 1-in plugs, and 23 whole-core pieces. Porosity and permeability analyses were possible for most, but not all, samples. Grain density measurements were also obtained for the horizontal plugs. Representative photomicrographs are provided of thin sections from 139 of the horizontal plugs and the 23 whole-core pieces.

O quebra-pedra (Phyllanthus stipulatus (Raf.)

Stroke can strike anyone, any age, anytime. Today in Northern Ireland around 4000 people each year have their lives and the lives of their families dramatically changed by stroke. A significant number of these could be avoided by simple lifestyle changes. More exercise, less alcohol and more attention to diet can make a major difference. Cutting down or cutting out smoking will make the most significant lifestyle contribution to a reduction in stroke and the enormous personal impact that it brings. åÊThese recommendations seek to make improvements in the key areas of prevention; treatment and rehabilitation of stroke patients in a modern health service setting. The accompanying standards outline the levels to which we must aspire, in the delivery of these services. åÊ

Six subject areas prompted the broad field of inquiry of this mission-oriented dust control and surface improvement project for unpaved roads: • DUST--Hundreds of thousands of tons of dust are created annually by vehicles on Iowa's 70,000 miles of unpaved roads and streets. Such dust is often regarded as a nuisance by Iowa's highway engineers. • REGULATIONS--Establishment of "fugitive dust" regulations by the Iowa DEQ in 1971 has created debates, conferences, legal opinions, financial responsibilities, and limited compromises regarding "reasonable precaution" and "ordinary travel," both terms being undefined judgment factors. • THE PUBLIC--Increased awareness by the public that regulations regarding dust do in fact exist creates a discord of telephone calls, petitions, and increasing numbers of legal citations. Both engineers and politicians are frustrated into allowing either the courts or regulatory agencies to resolve what is basically a professional engineering responsibility. • COST--Economics seldom appear as a tenet of regulatory strategies, and in the case of "fugitive dust," four-way struggles often occur between the highway professions, political bodies, regulatory agencies, and the general public as to who is responsible, what can be done, how much it will cost, or why it wasn't done yesterday. • CONFUSION--The engineer lacks authority, and guidelines and specifications to design and construct a low-cost surf acing system are nebulous, i.e., construct something between the present crushed stone/gravel surface and a high-type pavement. • SOLUTION--The engineer must demonstrate that dust control and surface improvement may be engineered at a reasonable cost to the public, so that a higher degree of regulatory responsibility can be vested in engineering solutions.

Key Points: • Iowa’s exceptional agricultural productivity is dependent upon nutrient‐rich soils with high carbon and nitrogen stocks. • Soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in Iowa corn‐soybean rotations are at significant risk of long‐term decline. • Soil carbon and nitrogen stocks are a function of crop residue inputs. • Nutrient input levels that do not maximize crop yield and residue production are likely to reduce soil carbon and nitrogen stocks. • If soil carbon and nitrogen stocks decline, water quality improvements become more difficult. • Soil carbon and nitrogen balances are extremely difficult to measure, but positive balances are essential to the future of Iowa agriculture. Recommended Actions: • Accurate measurement of soil carbon and nitrogen balances is exceptionally difficult, but can be accomplished with sufficient investment and long‐term planning. • The ideal approach will include a combination of measurements from farms and experimental networks that manipulate nutrient inputs. • With proper planning and cooperation, Iowa State University and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship can address the concerns raised in this report regarding the future of Iowa’s soil resource and agricultural productivity.

Electrodes modified with poly(5-amino-1-naphthol)/Prussian blue (poly(5-NH2-1-NAP)/PB) hybrid films are able to electrochemically reduce H2O2 in medium containing an excess of Na+ cations. This is an important advantage for biosensing applications over electrodes in which only conventionally (electro) deposited Prussian blue is present. Consequently, the aim of this work was to examine the application of templates of ordered arrays of colloidal poly(styrene) spheres (800, 450 and 100 nm in diameter) to produce inverse opal structures of poly(5-NH2-1-NAP)/PB hybrid platforms, in an effort to study the influence of the increase in surface area/volume ratio and higher exposition of the mediator active sites on material performance during H2O2 determination employing the different sized porous structures. Moreover, since the accentuated hydrophilic character of poly(5-NH2-1-NAP)/PB also allows H2O2 electrochemical reduction in inner active sites, issues concerning the amount of mediator electrodeposited on the electrode were also reflected in the observed results.

In this work, proton NMR relaxometry was used to measure the behavior of spin-lattice relaxation time with T1H as the time constant, and also of spin-spin relaxation time with the time constant T2H. These relaxometry parameters were determined to better understand the changes in the main structures present in commercial and in nature forms of origanum. The T1H relaxation data showed that the structures which had higher molecular mass were more sensitive to degradation with increased temperature treatment. According to the values of the T2H parameter, up to 150 degrees no significant change in the mobility and organization of water was observed. These data infer that the ideal cooking temperature and tea preparation mode for this herb should be around 100 degrees for the sample not to lose its characteristics. Also, it is not advisable to cook this herb at higher than 150 degrees but better to consume it at room temperature, especially give commercial herb has already been dehydrated.
