Calcareous nannofossil assemblages were studied from Ocean Drilling Program Holes 1150A, 1150B, 1151A, 1151C, and 1151D in order to estimate the age of sediments drilled in the Japan Trench of the western Pacific Ocean. The abundance and species diversity of nannofossil flora are generally low but are sufficient to show that the sedimentary sequences range from Quaternary to Miocene in age (nannofossil Zones CN15-CN3). The abundance of Coccolithus pelagicus, a cold-water indicator, was studied from sediments younger than 3.83 Ma from both Holes 1150A and 1151A in order to elucidate past climate conditions. Between 3.83 and 2.82 Ma, the abundance of C. pelagicus was generally low, but abundance increased significantly after 2.82 Ma. In agreement with previous studies, this increase appears to be related to a change in the current system around the western Pacific Ocean and eastern Atlantic Ocean that occurred in response to the final elevation of the Isthmus of Panama.

Past changes in sea-surface productivity in the Oyashio Current are evaluated on the basis of abundances of biological constituents in sediments from Leg 186 sites. Organic carbon contents at Sites 1150 and 1151 are moderate (0.5 to 1.5 wt%) and have an algal origin as indicated by low C/N ratios (<10) and by carbon isotopic compositions ranging from -23.4 to -21.3. A decreasing trend in organic carbon contents, carbon isotope ratios, and C/N ratios occurs with depth at both sites, probably as a consequence of diagenetic degradation of organic matter. Mass accumulation rates (MARs) determined for organic carbon and carbonates at Sites 1150 and 1151 show an abrupt increase between ~5 and 7 Ma. Similar results have been reported for sites in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean for the same time interval. As it has been previously suggested, the observed increase in MAR for both carbonate and organic carbon at Leg 186 sites probably resulted from augmented nutrient supply either from continental sources or from a more vigorous ocean circulation.

Several carbonaceous layers or fragments were recovered from sediments of Sites 1150 and 1151 on the deep-sea terrace of the Japan Trench during Leg 186. The X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) data indicate that these are predominantly dolomitic. In this study, carbon and oxygen isotopes of these carbonates recovered at Sites 1150 and 1151 are presented. The oxygen isotope ratios of the dolomites analyzed range from +0.4 per mil to +4.1 per mil vs. Peedee formation belemnite (PDB) and those of calcites from +0.6 per mil to +2.8 per mil PDB. The isotopic composition of carbon varies from -7.0 per mil to +12.3 per mil PDB in dolomite and from -13.4 per mil to -24.1 per mil PDB in calcite. The wide range of carbon isotopic compositions indicates that the carbonate samples were formed by the decomposition of organic matter through reactions such as oxidation, sulfate reduction, and methane formation during diagenesis.

Substantial amounts of adsorbed methane were detected in authigenic carbonate concretions recovered from sedimentary layers from depths between 245 and 1,108 m below seafloor during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 186 to ODP sites 1150 and 1151 on the deep-sea terrace of the Japan Trench. Methane contents were almost two orders of magnitude higher in the concretions (291-4,528 nmol/g wet wt) than in the surrounding bulk sediments (5-93 nmol/g wet wt), whereas methane/ethane ratios and stable carbon isotopic compositions were very similar. Carbonate content of surrounding bulk sediments (0.02-3.2 wet wt%) and methane content of the surrounding bulk sediments correlated positively. Extrapolation of the carbonate contents of bulk sediments suggests that 100 wt% carbonate would correspond to 1,886±732 nmol methane per g bulk sediment, which is similar to the average value observed in the carbonate concretions (1,321±1,067 nmol/g wet wt, n = 13). These data support the hypothesis that, in sediments, adsorbed hydrocarbon gases are strongly associated with authigenic carbonates.

Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1151 (Sacks, Suyehiro, Acton, et al., 2000, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.186.2000) is located in an area where the surface water mass is influenced by both the Kuroshio and Oyashio Currents. The site also receives a relatively high flux of detrital materials from riverine input from Honsyu Island and eolian input from Central and East Asia. We analyzed alkenones and alkenoates in the sediments to reconstruct alkenone unsaturation index (Uk'37)-based sea-surface temperature (SST), total organic carbon, and total nitrogen to estimate the terrigenous contribution by the C/N ratio during the last glacial-interglacial cycle. The major elements were also analyzed to examine the variation in terrigenous composition.

We present composite depth scales for the multiply cored intervals from Sites 1150 and 1151. These new depth scales place coeval strata recovered in cores from different holes at a single site into a common stratigraphic framework. At Site 1150, double coring between Holes 1150A and 1150B occurred over only a short interval between ~703 and 713 meters below seafloor (mbsf), but this is sufficient to tie the upper portion of the stratigraphic section cored in Hole 1150A to the lower portion cored in Hole 1150B. The upper ~100 m of the sedimentary section at Site 1151 was double cored with the advanced piston corer and partially cored with the rotary core barrel, resulting in the complete recovery of this interval. The composite depth scales were constructed using Splicer software to vertically adjust the relative depths of various cores from one hole to the depths from another hole so as to align distinct physical properties measured on cores. The magnetic susceptibility data was the physical property most easily correlated between holes, and therefore primarily used to create a composite depth scale and spliced stratigraphic section. The spliced section is a continuous stratigraphic section constructed from representative cored intervals from the holes at a site. Both the splice and the composite depth scale can be applied to other data sets from Site 1151 to provide a stratigraphically continuous and laterally consistent basis for interpreting lithologic features or data sets. The resulting composite scale showed a 30% improvement in correlation of the magnetic susceptibility data relative to the original mbsf depth scale, and comparable improvement when applied to the other data sets.

The sediments collected at Sites 1150 and 1151 during Leg 186 included many tephra layers and volcaniclastic detritus. In order to identify these tephras, the major oxide compositions of individual glass shards were determined by electron probe microanalyzer. The uppermost four tephras in sediments from Hole 1150A are correlated with the Towada-Hachinohe tephra (To-H; Tohoku district), Shikotsu Daiichi (1st) tephra (Spfa-1; Hokkaido district), Narugo-Yanagisawa tephra (Nr-Y; Tohoku district), and Aso-4 tephra (Kyushu district), respectively. The uppermost tephra in Hole 1151C is correlated with To-H tephra. To-H, Spfa-1, and Aso-4 tephras are also present in piston core KH94-3, LM-8, collected between Sites 1150 and 1151. Eruptive ages of To-H and Spfa-1 estimated from the oxygen isotopic Stages of core KH94-3, LM-8 are between 14.9-15.3 and 39.5-40.1 ka.

Major element geochemical composition was established for 59 tephra horizons from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1150 and 1151, located in the Japan forearc. These data, encompassing typically between 15 and 30 individual shard analyses per tephra horizon, were used to investigate the degree to which sediment reworking, postdepositional geochemical alteration, and geochemical uniqueness of individual eruptives facilitate or impede the potential for establishing a tephrostratigraphical framework for the Japan Trench, as well as usage of the tephra record to document arc evolution. Evidence was found that hydration (termed phase 1 alteration) of glass shards increases with age in the Pliocene-Pleistocene, but there is no indication that element leaching (phase 2 alteration) has occurred. Post- or syn-depositional differences in preservational style are shown to have no significant bearing on tephrogeochemical homogeneity and suitability for tephrostratigraphical analysis. Overall, therefore, the volcaniclastic record is suitable for investigating medium- to long-term changes in arc geochemistry and, provided consideration is given to the potential for nonunique geochemical signatures, is suitable for erecting tephrochronological frameworks. A limited number of Pleistocene tephra correlations are suggested in furtherance of this framework goal.
