3,3,6,6-Tetramethyl-9-phenyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-9H-xanthene-1,8(2H,7H)-dione

In the title compound, C23H26O3, the three six-membered rings of the xanthene system are non-planar, having total puckering amplitudes, QT, of 0.443 (2), 0.202 (2) and 0.449 (2) Å. The central ring adopts a boat conformation and the outer rings adopt sofa conformations. The crystal structure is stabilized by van der Waals interactions.

Uniqueness of Walkup's 9-vertex 3-dimensional Klein bottle

Via a computer search, Altshuler and Steinberg found that there are 1296+1 combinatorial 3-manifolds on nine vertices, of which only one is non-sphere. This exceptional 3-manifold View the MathML source triangulates the twisted S2-bundle over S1. It was first constructed by Walkup. In this paper, we present a computer-free proof of the uniqueness of this non-sphere combinatorial 3-manifold. As opposed to the computer-generated proof, ours does not require wading through all the 9-vertex 3-spheres. As a preliminary result, we also show that any 9-vertex combinatorial 3-manifold is equivalent by proper bistellar moves to a 9-vertex neighbourly 3-manifold.

Intramolecular Reactivity - Keto Participation in the Hydrolysis of N-Methyl-N-(9-Oxobicyclo[3.3.1]Nonan-2-Alpha-YL) Morpholinium Iodide, and A Cannizzaro-Type Reaction of 3-(2-Oxocyclohexyl)Propanal

Mechanistic studies of two intramolecular processes, nucleophilic displacement of N-methylmorpholinium in N-methyl-N-{9-oxobicyclo[3,3,1]nonan-2 alpha-yl}morpholinium iodide, anchimerically assisted by keto carbonyl, and a Cannizzaro-type reaction of 3-(2-oxocyclohexyl)propanal, occurring via axial hydride transfer onto the cyclohexanone, are reported.

Electrical characterization of Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 thin films grown by pulsed laser ablation technique

In situ annealed thin films of ferroelectric Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 were deposited on platinum substrates by pulsed laser ablation technique. The as grown films were polycrystalline in nature without the evidence of any secondary phases. The polarization hysteresis loop confirmed the ferroelectricity, which was also cross-checked with the capacitance-voltage characteristics. The remnant polarization was about 5.9 muC cm(-2) at room temperature and the coercive field was 45 kV. There was a slight asymmetry in the hysteresis for different polarities, which was thought to be due to the work function differences of different electrodes. The dielectric constant was about 452 and was found to exhibit low frequency dispersion that increased with frequency, This was related to the space-charge polarization. The complex impedance was plotted and this exhibited a semicircular trace, and indicated an equivalent parallel R - C circuit within the sample. This was attributed to the grain response. The DC leakage current-voltage plot was consistent with the space-charge limited conduction theory, but showed some deviation, which was explained by assuming a Poole-Frenkel type conduction to be superimposed on to the usual space-charge controlled current. Carbanucleosides: synthesis of both enantiomers of 2-(6-chloro-purin-9-yl)-3,5-bishydroxymethyl cyclopentanol from D-glucose

The key intermediate 1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-3-deoxy-3 beta-allyl-alpha-D-glucofuranose (8) could be conveniently prepared through radical induced allyl substitution at C-3 of appropriate 1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-glucofuranose derivatives (7a,b) and used to synthesize enantiomeric bishydroxymethyl aminocyclopentanols 13 and 19 by the application of a 1,3-dipolar nitrone cycloaddition reaction involving the C-5 or C-1 aldehyde functionality. The products were subsequently transformed into carbanucleoside enantiomers 15 and 21. The diastercomeric isoxazolidinocyclopentane derivative 20 was similarly converted to carbanucleoside 22.
