Lower Cretaceous and Tithonian sediments were sampled for magnetostratigraphy at six holes (Holes 638B, 638C, 639A, 639D, 640A, and 641C). Magnetic polarity chrons were assigned to polarity zones using biostratigraphic constraints. In Holes 638B and 638C, polarity Chrons M3 and perhaps Ml are present in the upper part, M4 and M5 are apparently absent, M6 through M9 are poorly represented, M10 and M10N are apparently absent, and Ml 1 and M12 are tentatively assigned to the lower part. Strata in Holes 638B and 638C dip toward the south. In Hole 639A, polarity Chron M13 is well documented and M12A may be present. In Hole 639D, polarity Chrons M19 through M21 may be present, but the data is poor. Hole 640A had inadequate recovery to identify polarity chrons. In Hole 641C, polarity Chron MO is well documented and occurs significantly above the nannofossil marker of the Barremian/Aptian boundary; comparison to Italian magnetostratigraphy implies that this nannofossil datum is timetransgressive.

Holes 639E and 639F were drilled along the western slope of a tilted fault block in an attempt to recover complete syn- and pre-rift stratigraphic sections and continental basement. Both holes ended in an apparent talus pile or conglomerate that includes cobbles of altered rhyolitic rock. Three small pieces of rhyolite (comprising about 20 cm of sample) were recovered from the bottoms of Holes 639E and 639F in the core catchers of the deepest cores. This note presents geochemical data from these rhyolitic rocks. Also recovered were quartz sandstones, graywackes, metasandstones, and quartz breccias. This assemblage of continentally derived 'basement' material was overlain by mudstones, limestones, and crystalline dolomites (see 'Site 639' chapter; Shipboard Scientific Party, 1987, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.103.110.1987).

This information is based on the limnological observations of the very interesting and remarkable discharge of the Lunzer Obersee, (1117m). On journeying towards the Mittersee, the Lunzer Obersee discharge takes on all the characteristics of spring-water; it was found to be of interest to take note of the change of the composition of the water on those stretches of the course where it flows shows the ground. For this purpose it was necessary to take temperature-recordings, chemical examination of the water and a quantitative determination of the plankton. Samples were taken in 1954 of zooplankton at different times of the year at the discharge of the lake and analysed. The significant loss of organisms in the way of discharge is discussed.
