The task in text retrieval is to find the subset of a collection of documents relevant to a user's information request, usually expressed as a set of words. Classically, documents and queries are represented as vectors of word counts. In its simplest form, relevance is defined to be the dot product between a document and a query vector--a measure of the number of common terms. A central difficulty in text retrieval is that the presence or absence of a word is not sufficient to determine relevance to a query. Linear dimensionality reduction has been proposed as a technique for extracting underlying structure from the document collection. In some domains (such as vision) dimensionality reduction reduces computational complexity. In text retrieval it is more often used to improve retrieval performance. We propose an alternative and novel technique that produces sparse representations constructed from sets of highly-related words. Documents and queries are represented by their distance to these sets. and relevance is measured by the number of common clusters. This technique significantly improves retrieval performance, is efficient to compute and shares properties with the optimal linear projection operator and the independent components of documents.

Integrated nanowire electrodes that permit direct, sensitive and rapid electrochemical based detection of chemical and biological species are a powerful emerging class of sensor devices. As critical dimensions of the electrodes enter the nanoscale, radial analyte diffusion profiles to the electrode dominate with a corresponding enhancement in mass transport, steady-state sigmoidal voltammograms, low depletion of target molecules and faster analysis. To optimise these sensors it is necessary to fully understand the factors that influence performance limits including: electrode geometry, electrode dimensions, electrode separation distances (within nanowire arrays) and diffusional mass transport. Therefore, in this thesis, theoretical simulations of analyte diffusion occurring at a variety of electrode designs were undertaken using Comsol Multiphysics®. Sensor devices were fabricated and corresponding experiments were performed to challenge simulation results. Two approaches for the fabrication and integration of metal nanowire electrodes are presented: Template Electrodeposition and Electron-Beam Lithography. These approaches allow for the fabrication of nanowires which may be subsequently integrated at silicon chip substrates to form fully functional electrochemical devices. Simulated and experimental results were found to be in excellent agreement validating the simulation model. The electrochemical characteristics exhibited by nanowire electrodes fabricated by electronbeam lithography were directly compared against electrochemical performance of a commercial ultra-microdisc electrode. Steady-state cyclic voltammograms in ferrocenemonocarboxylic acid at single ultra-microdisc electrodes were observed at low to medium scan rates (≤ 500 mV.s-1). At nanowires, steady-state responses were observed at ultra-high scan rates (up to 50,000 mV.s-1), thus allowing for much faster analysis (20 ms). Approaches for elucidating faradaic signal without the requirement for background subtraction were also developed. Furthermore, diffusional process occurring at arrays with increasing inter-electrode distance and increasing number of nanowires were explored. Diffusion profiles existing at nanowire arrays were simulated with Comsol Multiphysics®. A range of scan rates were modelled, and experiments were undertaken at 5,000 mV.s-1 since this allows rapid data capture required for, e.g., biomedical, environmental and pharmaceutical diagnostic applications.

Numerical weather prediction can be regarded as an initial value problem whereby the governing atmospheric equations are integrated forward from fully determined initial values of the meteorological parameters. However, in spite of the considerable improvements of the observing systems in recent years, the initial values are known only incompletely and inaccurately and one of the major tasks of any forecasting centre is to determine the best possible initial state from available observations.

The problem of spurious excitation of gravity waves in the context of four-dimensional data assimilation is investigated using a simple model of balanced dynamics. The model admits a chaotic vortical mode coupled to a comparatively fast gravity wave mode, and can be initialized such that the model evolves on a so-called slow manifold, where the fast motion is suppressed. Identical twin assimilation experiments are performed, comparing the extended and ensemble Kalman filters (EKF and EnKF, respectively). The EKF uses a tangent linear model (TLM) to estimate the evolution of forecast error statistics in time, whereas the EnKF uses the statistics of an ensemble of nonlinear model integrations. Specifically, the case is examined where the true state is balanced, but observation errors project onto all degrees of freedom, including the fast modes. It is shown that the EKF and EnKF will assimilate observations in a balanced way only if certain assumptions hold, and that, outside of ideal cases (i.e., with very frequent observations), dynamical balance can easily be lost in the assimilation. For the EKF, the repeated adjustment of the covariances by the assimilation of observations can easily unbalance the TLM, and destroy the assumptions on which balanced assimilation rests. It is shown that an important factor is the choice of initial forecast error covariance matrix. A balance-constrained EKF is described and compared to the standard EKF, and shown to offer significant improvement for observation frequencies where balance in the standard EKF is lost. The EnKF is advantageous in that balance in the error covariances relies only on a balanced forecast ensemble, and that the analysis step is an ensemble-mean operation. Numerical experiments show that the EnKF may be preferable to the EKF in terms of balance, though its validity is limited by ensemble size. It is also found that overobserving can lead to a more unbalanced forecast ensemble and thus to an unbalanced analysis.

ISOMap is a popular method for nonlinear dimensionality reduction in batch mode, but need to run its entirety inefficiently if the data comes sequentially. In this paper, we present an extension of ISOMap, namely I-ISOMap, augmenting the existing ISOMap framework to the situation where additional points become available after initial manifold is constructed. The MDS step, as a key component in ISOMap, is adapted by introducing Spring model and sampling strategy. As a result, it consumes only linear time to obtain a stable layout due to the Spring model’s iterative nature. The proposed method outperforms earlier work by Law [1], where their MDS step runs within quadratic time. Experimental results show that I-ISOMap is a precise and efficient technique for capturing evolving manifold.

The three-dimensional interfacial grain boundary network in a fully austenitic high-manganese steel was studied as a function of all five macroscopic crystallographic parameters (i.e. lattice misorientation and grain boundary plane normal) using electron backscattering diffraction mapping in conjunction with focused ion beam serial sectioning. The relative grain boundary area and energy distributions were strongly influenced by both the grain boundary plane orientation and the lattice misorientation. Grain boundaries terminated by (1 1 1) plane orientations revealed relatively higher populations and lower energies compared with other boundaries. The most frequently observed grain boundaries were {1 1 1} symmetric twist boundaries with the Σ3 misorientation, which also had the lowest energy. On average, the relative areas of different grain boundary types were inversely correlated to their energies. A comparison between the current result and previously reported observations (e.g. high-purity Ni) revealed that polycrystals with the same atomic structure (e.g. face-centered cubic) have very similar grain boundary character and energy distributions. © 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Hierarchical visualization systems are desirable because a single two-dimensional visualization plot may not be sufficient to capture all of the interesting aspects of complex high-dimensional data sets. We extend an existing locally linear hierarchical visualization system PhiVis [1] in several directions: bf(1) we allow for em non-linear projection manifolds (the basic building block is the Generative Topographic Mapping -- GTM), bf(2) we introduce a general formulation of hierarchical probabilistic models consisting of local probabilistic models organized in a hierarchical tree, bf(3) we describe folding patterns of low-dimensional projection manifold in high-dimensional data space by computing and visualizing the manifold's local directional curvatures. Quantities such as magnification factors [3] and directional curvatures are helpful for understanding the layout of the nonlinear projection manifold in the data space and for further refinement of the hierarchical visualization plot. Like PhiVis, our system is statistically principled and is built interactively in a top-down fashion using the EM algorithm. We demonstrate the visualization system principle of the approach on a complex 12-dimensional data set and mention possible applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

In (2+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with massless photons and massive matter fields, it is shown that the mass renormalization of the latter is infrared divergent at one loop. This result remains unchanged at two loops. A simple argument based on a similar divergence of the Coulomb potential leads us to conjecture that charged states are not observable in this model. This argument holds in 1+1 dimensions also.

In the current state of the art, it remains an open problem to detect damage with partial ultrasonic scan data and with measurements at coarser spatial scale when the location of damage is not known. In the present paper, a recent development of finite element based model reduction scheme in frequency domain that employs master degrees of freedom covering the surface scan region of interests is reported in context of non-contact ultrasonic guided wave based inspection. The surface scan region of interest is grouped into master and slave degrees of freedom. A finite element wise damage factor is derived which represents damage state over distributed areas or sharp condition of inter-element boundaries (for crack). Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) scan data obtained from plate type structure with inaccessible surface line crack are considered along with the developed reduced order damage model to analyze the extent of scan data dimensional reduction. The proposed technique has useful application in problems where non-contact monitoring of complex structural parts are extremely important and at the same time LDV scan has to be done on accessible surfaces only.

An ultrafast transient population grating induced by a (1+1)-dimensional, ultrashort dipole soliton is demonstrated by solving the full-wave Maxwell-Bloch equations. The number of lines and the period of the grating can be controlled by the beam waist and the area of the pulse. Of interest is that a polarization grating is produced. A coherent control scheme based on these phenomena can be contemplated as ultrafast transient grating techniques.

New exact solutions of the (2 + 1)-dimensional double sine-Gordon equation are studied by introducing the modified mapping relations between the cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon system and double sine-Gordon equation. Two arbitrary functions are included into the Jacobi elliptic function solutions. New doubly periodic wave solutions are obtained and displayed graphically by proper selections of the arbitrary functions.

We give a generalized Lagrangian density of 1 + 1 Dimensional O( 3) nonlinear sigma model with subsidiary constraints, different Lagrange multiplier fields and topological term, find a lost intrinsic constraint condition, convert the subsidiary constraints into inner constraints in the nonlinear sigma model, give the example of not introducing the lost constraint. N = 0, by comparing the example with the case of introducing the lost constraint, we obtain that when not introducing the lost constraint, one has to obtain a lot of various non-intrinsic constraints. We further deduce the gauge generator, give general BRST transformation of the model under the general conditions. It is discovered that there exists a gauge parameter beta originating from the freedom degree of BRST transformation in a general O( 3) nonlinear sigma model, and we gain the general commutation relations of ghost field.
