Ce3+ and B2O3 are introduced into erbium-doped Bi2O3-SiO2 glass to enhance the luminescence emission and optic spectra characters of Er3+. The energy transfer from Er3+ to Ce3+ will obviously be improved with the phonon energy increasing by the addition of B2O3. Here, the nonradiative rate, the lifetime of the I-4(11/2) -> I-4(3/2) transition, and the emission intensity and bandwidth of the 1.5 mu m luminescence with the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(5/2) transition of Er3+ are discussed in detail. The results show that the optical parameters of Er3+ in this bismuth-borate-silicate glass are nearly as good as that in tellurite glass, and the physical properties are similar to those in silicate glass. With the Judd-Ofelt and nonradiative theory analyses, the multiphonon decay and phonon-assisted energy-transfer (PAT) rates are calculated for the Er3+/Ce3+ codoped glasses. For the PAT process, an optimum value of the glass phonon energy is obtained after B2O3 is introduced into the Er3+/Ce3+ codoped bismuth-silicate glasses, and it much improves the energy-transfer rate between Er3+ I-4(11/2)-I-4(13/2) and Ce3+ F-2(5/2) -> F-2(7/2), although there is an energy mismatch. Er3+/Yb3+ cocloped fluorophosphate glasses were prepared and their thermal stabilities, Raman spectra, absorption spectra, and fluorescence spectra were measured. It is found that proper content of NaF or PbF2 is helpful for the increase of stability against crystallization. The variation of AI(PO3)3 or NaF content in the composition affects not the maximum phonon energy but the phonon density. The introduction of PbF2 decreases the phonon energy slightly. Intense green and red upconversion luminescence was observed for the fluorophosphate glass with low phosphate content. A glass matrix for upconversion luminescence requiring neither expensive raw material nor special atmospheric conditioned preparation is provided. Infrared luminescence around 1530 nm was researched. Fluorophosphate glasses with bandwidth properties and stimulated-emission cross sections better than tellurite, germanate and silicate glasses are obtained. Through the introduction of NaF, the bandwidth properties are decreased. Through the introduction of PbF2 the gain properties are increased. On the whole, it is difficult to obtain a material with the best gain properties and bandwidth properties simultaneously. There should be a compromise between them according to the demand. Transparent glass ceramics have been obtained by nucleation and growth of Y2Te6O15 or Er2Te5O13 cubic phase in a new Er3+-doped oxyfluoride tellurite glass. Effect of beat treatment on absorption spectra, luminescence and up-conversion properties in the oxyfluoride tellurite glass has been investigated. With heat treatment the ultraviolet absorption edge red shifted evidently for the oxyfluoride telluride glass. The near infrared emission that corresponds to Er3+:I-4(13/2)-> I-4(15/2) can be significantly enhanced after heat treatment. Under 980 nm LD pumping, red and green up-conversion intensity of Er3+ in the glass ceramic can be observed much stronger than that in the base glass. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Er3+-doped TeO2-based oxysulfide glasses have been prepared in argon atmosphere in carbon crucibles. The thermal analysis and spectroscopic properties of Er (3+) have been considered in terms of sulfide influence. As a function of composition, we have principally measured optical absorption, spontaneous emission and lifetime measurements. Judd-Ofelt theory was introduced to calculate bandwidth and emission cross-section. The results show the product FVMM x sigma(c) increase from 476.8 8 to 635.04 10(-21) cm(2) nm evidently with the addition of 10 mol% PbS into tellurite glass, which indicates a perfect effect on spectra property of Er3+ ions. High-uniform nanowires with diameters down to 50 nm are directly taper-drawn from bulk glasses. Typical loss of these wires goes down to 0.1 dB/mm for single-mode operation. Favorable photonic properties such as high index for tight optical confinement in tellurite glass nanowires and photoluminescence for active devices in doped fluoride and phosphate glass nanowires are observed. Supporting high-index tellurite nanowires with solid substrates (such as silica glass and MgF2 crystal) and assembling low-loss microcoupler with these wires are also demonstrated. Photonic nanowires demonstrated in this work may open up vast opportunities for making versatile building blocks for future micro- and nanoscale photonic circuits and components. This paper reports on the optical spectroscopic properties and thermal stability of Er3+-doped TeO2-BaO (Li2O,NaO)-La2O3 glasses for developing 1.5-mu m fiber amplifiers. Upon excitation at 977 nm laser diode, an intense 1.53-mu m infrared fluorescence has been observed with a broad full width at half maximum (FWHM) of about 60 nm for the Er3+-doped TeO2-BaO (Li2O, Na2O)-La2O3 glass with 10 mol% of BaO. The calculated fluorescence lifetime and the emission cross-sections of the 1.53-mu m transition are 2.91 ms and similar to 9.97 x 10(-21) cm(2), respectively. It is noted that the gain bandwidth, a, x FWHM, of the TeO2-BaO-La2O3Er2O3 glass is about 600, which is significantly higher than that in silicate and phosphate glasses. Meanwhile, it is interesting to note that the TeO2-BaO-La2O3-Er2O3 glass has shown a high glass thermal stability and good infrared transmittance. As a result, TeO2-BaO (Li2O, Na2O)-La2O3 glass with 10 mol% of BaO has been considered to be more useful as a host for broadband optical fiber amplifier. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report on photoinduced second-harmonic generation (SHG) in chalcogenide glasses. Fundamental and second-harmonic waves from a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser were used to induce second-order nonlinearity in chalcogenide glasses. The magnitude of SHG in 20Ge . 20As . 60S glass was 10(4) larger than that of tellurite glass with a composition of 15Nb(2)O(5) . 85TeO(2) (mol.%). Moreover, no apparent decay of photoinduced SHG in 20Ge . 20As . 60S glass was observed after optical poling at room temperature. We suggest that the large and stable value of X-(2) is due to the induced defect structures and large X-(3) of the chalcogenide glasses. (C) 2001 Optical Society of America

Crystallization kinetics and structure of 20Li(2)O-80TeO(2) glasses are studied using x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. XRD results show gamma-TeO2, alpha-TeO2 and Li2Te2O5 phase crystallization in the glass matrix. The infrared band structure of this glass is similar to that observed in glassy TeO2. Activation energies were evaluated from Lorentzian three-peak deconvolution of the DSC crystallization peak recorded at different particle sizes. As the obtained activation values were very close, it was not possible to establish a hierarchy on the crystallization of this glass. In addition, the height of the Lorentzian peaks ( delta T-P1, delta T-P2 and delta T-P3) for each sample was measured and plotted against the nucleation temperature. The presence of two maxima at around 284 and 304 degrees C suggests at least two maximum nucleation temperatures in the studied 20Li(2)O-80TeO(2) glass.

20Li(2)O-80TeMO(2) glasses were heat annealed at different temperatures between T-g and T-x and studied by using XRD, FTIR spectroscopy and DSC techniques to understand the crystallization kinetics in this glass matrix. The infrared band structure of this glass is similar to what was observed in glassy TeO2. XRD results reveal the presence of three distinct crystalline gamma-TeO2, alpha-TeO2 and Li2Te2O5 phases during the crystallization process. This is a first report of gamma-TeO2 phase crystallization in this glass matrix. DSC results confinn the crystallization of three distinct structures in the glass. In summary, our results suggest a crystallization hierarchy on this glass matrix since the gamma-TeO2 and alpha-TeO2 phases crystallization occurs before the Li2Te2O5 phase crystallization. Glasses and glass-ceramics have been obtained in oxyfluoride systems involving lead and cadmium fluorides and one of the well-known glass former oxides SiO2, B2O3 and TeO2. Vitreous domains were established and a wide range of compositions including high heavy metal contents lead to stable glasses. Amorphous structures have been studied by short-range order spectroscopy techniques (Raman scattering and x-ray absorption) and molecular basic structures have been identified. Besides the usual oxides, the role of glass former could also be proposed for cadmium ions. Special attention has been paid for crystallization process. Cubic lead fluoride, cubic lead tellurite, tetragonal tellurium oxide and a solid solution of the type Pb1-xCdxF2 are obtained as crystallization products depending on the composition and temperature of heat treatments. Pb1-xCdxF2 solid solutions are well known superionic materials and obtaining this solid solution as a crystal phase could be very interesting for applications concerning ionic electrical conduction properties. The addition of rare earth ions led to the control of the crystallization process. In the presence of the nucleating ion only the cubic form beta-PbF2 was identified. Rare earth ions are present in the crystal phase and crystal-like spectroscopic properties were observed suggesting interesting applications for these perfectly transparent glass ceramics in photonics.

A new lead fluoroborate glass (PbO-PbF2-B2O3) doped with ytterbium (Yb:PbFB) is presented. Samples with different concentrations of Yb3+ were produced and had their emission cross-sections, fluorescence lifetimes and minimum pump intensities determined. They have high refractive index of 2.2 and a density of 4.4 g/cm(3). For a doping level of 1.153x10(20) ions/cm(3), the fluorescence lifetime, after excitation at 968 nm, is 0.81 ms, which is comparable to Yb:tellurite laser glass. Also, an emission band at 1022 nm is measured with emission cross-section of approximately 1.07x10(-20) cm(2) and fluorescence effective linewidth of 60 nm, which is comparable to Yb:phosphate laser glass. Diode-pumped Yb-doped glass lasers have received considerable attention for applications such as high-power beam production or femtosecond pulses generation. In this paper, we evaluate the laser potential of three different glass families doped with Yb3+ : alkali lead fluorborate (PbO-PbF2-B2O3), heavy metal oxide (Bi2O3-PbO-Ga2O3) and niobium tellurite (TeO2-Nb2O5-K2O-Li2O). Spectroscopic properties were studied for the samples and calculations of the minimum laser pump intensity (I-min), saturation fluence (U-sat) and the theoretical limit of peak power (P-max) are also presented. A comparison of laser properties of these three different glasses and their importance is shown and analyzed. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
