Gelatin multilayers were assembled on PLLA substrate at pH 3, 5, and 7, which was below, around, and above the isoelectric point of the amphoteric polymer, using the layer-by-layer assembly technique. The multilayer deposition on the PLLA substrate was monitored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and water contact angle measurement. The XPS, water contact angle, and atomic force microscopy data indicated that the layer thickness, surface hydrophicity, and surface morphology of the gelatin multilayers assembled strongly depended on the pH at which the layers were deposited

Diblock polyampholyte brushes with different block sequences (Si/SiO2/poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly (2-vinylpyridine) (PAA-b-P2VP) brushes and Si/SiO2/P2VP-b-PAA brushes) and different block lengths were synthesized by sequent surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The PAA block was obtained through hydrolysis from the corresponding poly(tert-butyl acrylate). The polyampholyte brushes demonstrated unique pH-responsive behavior. In the intermediate pH region, the brushes exhibited a less hydrophilic wetting behavior and a rougher surface morphology due to the formation of polyelectrolyte complex through electrostatic interaction between oppositely charged blocks. In the low pH and high pH regions, the rearrangement of polyampholyte brushes showed great dependence on the block sequence and block length. The polyampholyte brushes with P2VP-b-PAA sequence underwent rearrangement during alternative treatment by acidic aqueous solution (low pH value) and basic aqueous solution (high pH value).

The surface morphologies of poly(styrene-b-4vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) diblock copolymer and homopolystyrene (hPS) binary blend thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy as a function of total volume fraction of PS (phi(PS)) in the mixture. It was found that when hPS was added into symmetric PS-b-P4VP diblock copolymers, the surface morphology of this diblock copolymer was changed to a certain degree. With phi(PS) increasing at first, hPS was solubilized into the corresponding domains of block copolymer and formed cylinders. Moreover, the more solubilized the hPS, the more cylinders exist. However, when the limit was reached, excessive hPS tended to separate from the domains independently instead of solubilizing into the corresponding domains any longer, that is, a macrophase separation occurred. A model describing transitions of these morphologies with an increase in phi(PS) is proposed. The effect of composition on the phase morphology of blend films when graphite is used as a substrate is also investigated.

Surface morphology of polystyrene (PS) films on different substrates by spin-coating before and after annealing was observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The effects of polymer molecular weight, substrates, solvents, and annealing conditions on the morphology of the films were investigated. Before annealing, the grain height decreases, and simultaneously the grain diameter increases with molecular weight (M-w) within the measured molecular weight. After annealing. the situation is opposite, i.e., the grain height increases while the grain diameter decreases with M-w. Furthermore, after annealing the smaller surface roughness (Ra) was obtained. It was also found that film surface roughness (Ra) depends on the vapor pressure and dipole moment of different used solvents as well as the substrates. The experimental results show that when the used solvents have similar dipole moment but different vapor pressure, the Ra of PS film decreased with the decreasing vapor pressure of solvents whether on silicon or on mica. And when the used solvents have close vapor pressure but different dipole moment, the Ra decreased with the increasing of solvent dipole moments on both substrates.

We have studied the surface morphology of symmetric poly(styrene)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer thin films after solvent vapor treatment selective for poly(methyl methacrylate). Highly ordered nanoscale depressions or striped morphologies are obtained by varying the solvent annealing time. The resulting nanostructured films turn out to be sensitive to the surrounding medium, that is, their morphologies and surface properties can be reversibly switchable upon exposure to different block-selective solvents.

Crystallization behavior, structural development and morphology evolution in a series of diblock copolymers Of poly(L-lactide)-blockpoly(ethylene glycol) (PLLA-b-PEG) were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. In these copolymers, both blocks are crystallizable and biocompatible. It was interesting that these PLLA-b-PEG diblock copolymers could form spherulites with banded textures, which was undercooling dependent. Single crystals with an abundance of screw dislocations were also observed via AFM. Such results indicated that these ringed spherulites and single crystals were formed during the crystallization of the PLLA blocks.

Evaporation of a droplet of silica microsphere suspension on a polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) blend film with isolated holes in its surface has been exploited as a means of particles self-assembly. During the retraction of the contact line of the droplet, spontaneous dewetting combined with the strong capillary force pack the silica microspheres into the holes in the polymer surface. Complex aggregates of colloids are formed after being exposed to acetone vapor. The morphology evolution of the underlying polymer film by exposure to acetone solvent vapor is responsible for the complex aggregates of colloids formation.

The dependence of morphology and properties on film-forming conditions is described for the symmetrically substituted copper tetra-4-(2, 4-di-t-amylphenoxy) phthalocyanine (tapCuPc) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. The effects of LB film-forming conditions (such as the surface pressure, pH value and the concentrations of spreading solutions) on film quality were studied with the help of a UV-visible spectrophotometer and a transmission electron microscope. Transmission electron microscopy photographs of the surface morphology of tapCuPc LB films show that a smooth and homogeneous surface structure can be obtained under optimum film-forming conditions.

Electroless plating of binary Ni-P, ternary Ni-Sn-P and Ni-W-P, and quaternary Ni-W-Sn-P alloy coatings was carried out in alkalicitrate baths. After the plating, several kinds of test were carried out to determine the improvement in the characteristics and properties due to the additional elements as well as to study the change in behaviour when heat treatment was applied to these coatings. The coatings were subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis where it was found that all the coatings were amorphous. Interesting surface morphology features were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Addition of a third element improved the hardness.

Time-resolved DRIFTS, MS, and resistance measurements were used to study the interaction of undoped and Pd-doped SnO2 with H-2 in air and argon at 300 degrees C. Using first-order kinetics, we compare the time constants for the resistance drop and its partial recovery with those of the surface hydroxyl evolution and water formation in the gas phase upon exposure to hydrogen. In the case of the undoped oxide, resistance and bridging hydroxyls (BOHs) evolve similarly, manifesting a fast main drop followed by recovery at a similar rate. The rate of water formation for this material was found to be much slower than that of the main drop in both the resistance and BOHs. In contrast, the resistance change for SnO2-Pd appeared to be similar to that of water formation, and no correlation was found between the evolution of resistance and surface OHs. Isotopic exchange on both materials revealed that water formation occurs via fast and slow hydrogen transfer to surface oxygen species. While the former originates from just-adsorbed hydrogen, the latter appears to proceed from the preadsorbed OHs. Both surfaces exhibit close interaction between chemisorbed oxygen and existing bridging OH groups, indicating that the latter is an intermediate in the hydrogen oxidation and generation of donor states on the surface.

Porous titanium samples were manufactured using the 3D printing and sintering method in order to determine the effects of final sintering temperature on morphology and mechanical properties. Cylindrical samples were printed and split into groups according to a final sintering temperature (FST). Irregular geometry samples were also printed and split into groups according to their FST. The cylindrical samples were used to determine part shrinkage, in compressive tests to provide stress-strain data, in microCT scans to provide internal morphology data and for optical microscopy to determine surface morphology. All of the samples were used in microhardness testing to establish the hardness. Below 1100 C FST, shrinkage was in the region of 20% but increased to approximately 30% by a FST of 1300 C. Porosity varied from a maximum of approximately 65% at the surface to the region of 30% internally. Between 97 and 99% of the internal porosity is interconnected. Average pore size varied between 24 µm at the surface and 19 µm internally. Sample hardness increased to in excess of 300 HV0.05 with increasing FST while samples with an FST of below 1250 C produced an elastic-brittle stress/strain curve and samples above this displayed elastic-plastic behaviour. Yield strength increased significantly through the range of sintering temperatures while the Young's modulus remained fairly consistent. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

InP(1 0 0) surfaces were sputtered under ultrahigh vacuum conditions by 5 keV N2+ ions at an angle of incidence of 41° to the sample normal. The fluence, φ, used in this study, varied from 1 × 1014 to 5 × 1018 N2+ cm-2. The surface topography was investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). At the lower fluences (φ ≤ 5 × 1016 N2+ cm-2) only conelike features appeared, similar in shape as was found for noble gas ion bombardment of InP. At the higher fluences, ripples also appeared on the surface. The bombardment-induced topography was quantified using the rms roughness. This parameter showed a linear relationship with the logarithm of the fluence. A model is presented to explain this relationship. The ripple wavelength was also determined using a Fourier transform method. These measurements as a function of fluence do not agree with the predictions of the Bradley-Harper theory. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are known to play important roles in development, post-natal growth, repair, and regeneration of mesenchymal tissues. What is more, surface treatments are widely reported to affect the biomimetic nature of materials. This paper will detail, discuss and compare laser surface treatment of polyamide (Polyamide 6,6), using a 60 W CO2 laser, and NiTi alloy, using a 100 W fiber laser, and the effects of these treatments on mesenchymal stem cell response. The surface morphology and composition of the polyamide and NiTi alloy were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. MSC cell morphology cell counting and viability measurements were done by employing a haemocytometer and MTT colorimetric assay. The success of enhanced adhesion and spreading of the MSCs on each of the laser surface treated samples, when compared to as-received samples, is evidenced in this work. © (2015) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Metallized plastics have recently received significant interest for their useful applications in electronic devices such as for integrated circuits, packaging, printed circuits and sensor applications. In this work the metallized films were developed by electroless copper plating of polyethylene films grafted with vinyl ether of monoethanoleamine. There are several techniques for metal deposition on surface of polymers such as evaporation, sputtering, electroless plating and electrolysis. In this work the metallized films were developed by electroless copper plating of polyethylene films grafted with vinyl ether of monoethanoleamine. Polyethylene films were subjected to gamma-radiation induced surface graft copolymerization with vinyl ether of monoethanolamine. Electroless copper plating was carried out effectively on the modified films. The catalytic processes for the electroless copper plating in the presence and the absence of SnCl2 sensitization were studied and the optimum activation conditions that give the highest plating rate were determined. The effect of grafting degree on the plating rate is studied. Electroless plating conditions (bath additives, pH and temperature) were optimized. Plating rate was determined gravimetrically and spectrophotometrically at different grafting degrees. The results reveal that plating rate is a function of degree of grafting and increases with increasing grafted vinyl ether of monoethanolamine onto polyethylene. It was found that pH 13 of electroless bath and plating temperature 40°C are the optimal conditions for the plating process. The increasing of grafting degree results in faster plating rate at the same pH and temperature. The surface morphology of the metallized films was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adhesion strength between the metallized layer and grafted polymer was studied using tensile machine. SEM photos and adhesion measurements clarified that uniform and adhered deposits were obtained under optimum conditions.
