We measured tungsten (W) isotopes in 23 iron meteorites and the metal phase of the CB chondrite Gujba in order to ascertain if there is evidence for a large-scale nucleosynthetic heterogeneity in the p-process isotope 180W in the solar nebula as recently suggested by Schulz et al. (2013). We observed large excesses in 180W (up to ≈ 6 ε) in some irons. However, significant within-group variations in magmatic IIAB and IVB irons are not consistent with a nucleosynthetic origin, and the collateral effects on 180W from an s-deficit in IVB irons cannot explain the total variation. We present a new model for the combined effects of spallation and neutron capture reactions on 180W in iron meteorites and show that at least some of the observed within-group variability is explained by cosmic ray effects. Neutron capture causes burnout of 180W, whereas spallation reactions lead to positive shifts in 180W. These effects depend on the target composition and cosmic-ray exposure duration; spallation effects increase with Re/W and Os/W ratios in the target and with exposure age. The correlation of 180W/184W with Os/W ratios in iron meteorites results in part from spallogenic production of 180W rather than from 184Os decay, contrary to a recent study by Peters et al. (2014). Residual ε180W excesses after correction for an s-deficit and for cosmic ray effects may be due to ingrowth of 180W from 184Os decay, but the magnitude of this ingrowth is at least a factor of ≈2 smaller than previously suggested. These much smaller effects strongly limit the applicability of the putative 184Os-180W system to investigate geological problems.

We present results of a detailed mineralogical and geochemical study of the progressive hydrothermal alteration of clastic sediments recovered at ODP Site 858 in an area of active hydrothermal venting at the sedimented, axial rift valley of Middle Valley (northern Juan de Fuca Ridge). These results allow a characterization of newly formed phyllosilicates and provide constraints on the mechanisms of clay formation and controls of mineral reactions on the chemical and isotopic composition of hydrothermal fluids. Hydrothermal alteration at Site 858 is characterized by a progressive change in phyllosilicate assemblages with depth. In the immediate vent area, at Hole 858B, detrital layers are intercalated with pure hydrothermal precipitates at the top of the section, with a predominance of hydrothermal phases at depth. Sequentially downhole in Hole 858B, the clay fraction of the pure hydrothermal layers changes from smectite to corrensite to swelling chlorite and finally to chlorite. In three pure hydrothermal layers in the deepest part of Hole 858B, the clay minerals coexist with neoformed quartz. Neoformed and detrital components are clearly distinguished on the basis of morphology, as seen by SEM and TEM, and by their chemical and stable isotope compositions. Corrensite is characterized by a 24 Å stacking sequence and high Si- and Mg-contents, with Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratio of = 0.08. We propose that corrensite is a unique, possibly metastable, mineralogical phase and was precipitated directly from seawater-dominated hydrothermal fluids. Hydrothermal chlorite in Hole 858B has a stacking sequence of 14 Å with Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratios of ? 0.35. The chemistry and structure of swelling chlorite suggest that it is a corrensiteychlorite mixed-layer phase. The mineralogical zonation in Hole 858B is accompanied by a systematic decrease in d18O, reflecting both the high thermal gradients that prevail at Site 858 and extensive sediment-fluid interaction. Precipitation of the Mg-phyllosilicates in the vent region directly controls the chemical and isotopic compositions of the pore fluids. This is particularly evident by decreases in Mg and enrichments in deuterium and salinity in the pore fluids at depths at which corrensite and chlorite are formed. Structural formulae calculated from TEM-EDX analyses were used to construct clay-H2O oxygen isotope fractionation curves based on oxygen bond models. Our results suggest isotopic disequilibrium conditions for corrensite-quartz and swelling chlorite-quartz precipitation, but yield an equilibrium temperature of 300° C ± 30° for chlorite-quartz at 32 m below the surface. This estimate is consistent with independent estimates and indicates steep thermal gradients of 10-11°/m in the vent region.

ABSTRACT During daily routines, we are constantly interacting with electronic devices and telecommunication services. Unconsciously, we are massively leaving traces of our activity in the service providers’ databases. These new data sources have the dimensions required to enable the observation of human behavioral patterns at large scales. As a result, there has been an unprecedented explosion of data-driven social research. In this thesis, we develop computational and mathematical methods to analyze social systems by means of the combined study of human activity data and the theory of complex networks. Our goal is to characterize and understand the emergent systems from human interactions on the new technological spaces, such as the online social network Twitter and mobile phones. We analyze systems by means of the construction of complex networks and temporal series, studying their structure, functioning and temporal evolution. We also investigate on the nature of the observed patterns, by means of the mechanisms that rule the interactions among individuals, as well as on the impact of critical events on the system’s behavior. For this purpose, we have proposed models that explain the global structures and the emergent dynamics of information flow in the system. In the studies of the online social network Twitter, we have based our analysis on specific conversations, such as political protests, important announcements and electoral processes. From the messages related to the conversations, we identify the participant users and build networks of interactions with them. We specifically build one network to represent whoreceives- whose-messages and another to represent who-propagates-whose-messages. In general, we have found that these structures have complex properties, such as explosive growth and scale-free degree distributions. Based on the topological properties of these networks, we have identified three types of user behavior that determine the information flow dynamics due to their influence. In order to measure the users’ influence on the conversations, we have introduced a new measure called user efficiency. It is defined as the number of retransmissions obtained by message posted, and it measures the effects of the individual activity on the collective reacixtions. We have observed that the probability distribution of this property is ubiquitous across several Twitter conversation, regardlessly of their dimension or social context. Therefore, we suggest that there is a universal behavior in the relationship between individual efforts and collective reactions on Twitter. In order to explain the different factors that determine the user efficiency distribution, we have developed a computational model to simulate the diffusion of messages on Twitter, based on the mechanism of independent cascades. This model, allows us to measure the impact on the emergent efficiency distribution of the underlying network topology, as well as the way that users post messages. The results indicate that the emergence of an exclusive group of highly efficient users depends upon the heterogeneity of the underlying network instead of the individual behavior. Moreover, we have also developed techniques to infer the degree of polarization in social networks. We propose a methodology to estimate opinions in social networks and to measure the degree of polarization in the obtained opinions. We have designed a model to study the effects of the opinions of a small group of influential users, called elite, on the opinions of the majority of users. The model results in an opinions distribution to which we measure the degree of polarization. We apply our methodology to measure the polarization on graphs from the messages diffusion process, during a conversation on Twitter from a polarized society. The results are in very good agreement with offline and contextual data. With this study, we have shown that our methodology is capable of detecting several degrees of polarization depending on the structure of the networks. Finally, we have also inferred the human behavior from mobile phones’ data. On the one hand, we have characterized the impact of natural disasters, like flooding, on the collective behavior. We found that the communication patterns are abruptly altered in the areas affected by the catastrophe. Therefore, we demonstrate that we could measure the impact of the disaster on the region, almost in real-time and without needing to deploy further efforts. On the other hand, we have studied human activity and mobility patterns in order to characterize regional interactions on a developing country. We found that the calls and trajectories networks present community structure associated to regional and urban areas. In summary, we have shown that it is possible to understand complex social processes by means of analyzing human activity data and the theory of complex networks. Along the thesis, we have demonstrated that social phenomena, like influence, polarization and reaction to critical events, are reflected in the structural and dynamical patterns of the networks constructed from data regarding conversations on online social networks and mobile phones.

The Vicario Viaduct is located in the A-44 motorway, in the South-East part of Spain. It crosses a natural gorge, near the town of Ízbor in the province of Granada. A single continuous steel concrete composite deck, 24 m wide and 175 m long, divided in two 87,5 m spans, has been built. The cross section is a single structural steel box, 8,00 m wide and 4,52 m deep. The total width of 24 m is reached adding a strut and tie system each 4,375 m on both sides of the box. The steel parts of the deck were entirely constructed in the workshop and then they were erected on site just behind one of the abutments. Finally a 27.5 m long steel nose was connected to launch the deck. The main problems have been the curved shape of the deck (1420 m radius in plan) producing a non symmetric transverse distribution of reactions on each support and the cantilever reaching 87,5 m long, producing a maximum deflection of 1500 mm

The CC chemokines regulated on activation normal T expressed and secreted (RANTES) and monocyte chemotactic protein 3 (MCP-3), and the anaphylatoxin C5a, induce activation, degranulation, chemotaxis, and transendothelial migration of eosinophils. Adhesion assays on purified ligands showed differential regulation of beta 1 and beta 2 integrin avidity in eosinophils. Adhesiveness of VLA-4 (alpha 4 beta 1, CD29/CD49d) for vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 or fibronectin was rapidly increased but subsequently reduced by RANTES, MCP-3, or C5a. The deactivation of VLA-4 lead to cell detachment, whereas phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate induced sustained activation of VLA-4. In contrast, chemoattractants stimulated a prolonged increase in the adhesiveness of Mac-1 (alpha M beta 2, CD11b/CD18) for intercellular adhesion molecule 1. Inhibition by pertussis toxin confirmed signaling via G protein-coupled receptors. Chemoattractants induced transient, while phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate induced sustained actin polymerization. Disruption of actin filaments by cytochalasins inhibited increases in avidity of VLA-4 but not of Mac-1. Chemoattractants did not upregulate a Mn2+-inducible beta 1 neoepitope defined by the mAb 9EG7, but induced prolonged expression of a Mac-1 activation epitope recognized by the mAb CBRM1/5. This mAb inhibited chemoattractant-stimulated adhesion of eosinophils to intercellular adhesion molecule 1. Thus, regulation of VLA-4 was dependent on the actin cytoskeleton, whereas conformational changes appeared to be crucial for activation of Mac-1. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that physiological agonists, such as chemoattractants, can differentially regulate the avidity of a beta 1 and a beta 2 integrin expressed on the same leukocyte.

Protein C activation on the surface of the endothelium is critical to the negative regulation of blood coagulation. We now demonstrate that monoclonal antibodies that block protein C binding to the endothelial cell protein C receptor (EPCR) reduce protein C activation rates by the thrombin-thrombomodulin complex on endothelium, but that antibodies that bind to EPCR without blocking protein C binding have no effect. The kinetic result of blocking the EPCR-protein C interaction is an increased apparent Km for the activation without altering the affinity of thrombin for thrombomodulin. Activation rates of the protein C derivative lacking the gamma-carboxyglutamic acid domain, which is required for binding to EPCR, are not altered by the anti-EPCR antibodies. These data indicate that the protein C activation complex involves protein C, thrombin, thrombomodulin, and EPCR. These observations open new questions about the control of coagulation reactions on vascular endothelium.

To study the binding specificity of Src homology 3 (SH3) domains, we have screened a mouse embryonic expression library for peptide fragments that interact with them. Several clones were identified that express fragments of proteins which, through proline-rich binding sites, exhibit differential binding specificity to various SH3 domains. Src-SH3-specific binding uses a sequence of 7 aa of the consensus RPLPXXP, in which the N-terminal arginine is very important. The SH3 domains of the Src-related kinases Fyn, Lyn, and Hck bind to this sequence with the same affinity as that of the Src SH3. In contrast, a quite different proline-rich sequence from the Btk protein kinase binds to the Fyn, Lyn, and Hck SH3 domains, but not to the Src SH3. Specific binding of the Abl SH3 requires a longer, more proline-rich sequence but no arginine. One clone that binds to both Src and Abl SH3 domains through a common site exhibits reversed binding orientation, in that an arginine indispensable for binding to all tested SH3 domains occurs at the C terminus. Another clone contains overlapping yet distinct Src and Abl SH3 binding sites. Binding to the SH3 domains is mediated by a common PXXP amino acid sequence motif present on all ligands, and specificity comes about from other interactions, often ones involving arginine. The rules governing in vivo usage of particular sites by particular SH3 domains are not clear, but one binding orientation may be more specific than another.

The bromonium-promoted cyclization of conjugated aminodienes is described. The reaction proceeds smoothly in the presence of N-bromosuccinimide as halonium promoter, and using N-tosyl-protected aminodienes as substrates, to give the corresponding halocyclization products in high yields and with high diastereoselectivities. It can be envisaged that the formation of these products is the result of an SN2′-type ring-opening of a terminal bromonium intermediate in a 5-exo-trig or 6-exo-trig cyclization mode. The presence of an allyl bromide moiety in the haloamination products makes these molecules highly attractive from a synthetic point of view, as it opens the way for further transformations. Thus, allylic substitution reactions with different nucleophiles (acetate, azide, cyanide, and malonate), palladium-catalysed Suzuki coupling, and silver-mediated bromine displacement reactions were carried out successfully.

SETTING: New cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) were noted in a cluster of young Caucasian males, an unusual ethnic group for this disease in Queensland, Australia. It was noted that marijuana water pipe ('bong') smoking was common amongst cases and contacts. OBJECTIVE: To report this cluster of TB and to investigate whether shared use of a marijuana water pipe was associated with transmission of TB. DESIGN: All contacts were identified and screened according to standard protocols. Cases were asked to list contacts with whom they had shared a marijuana water pipe. RESULTS: Five cases of open pulmonary TB were identified clinically and on sputum culture, and all isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were identical on typing. Of 149 contacts identified, 114 (77%) completed screening, and 57 (50%) had significant tuberculin skin test (TST) reactions on follow-up. Of 45 contacts who had shared a marijuana water pipe with a case, 29 (64%) had a significant TST reaction. CONCLUSION: Sharing a marijuana water pipe with a case of pulmonary TB was associated with transmission of TB (OR 2.22, 95% CI 0.96-5.17), although the most important risk factor for acquiring TB infection in this cluster was close household contact with a case (OR 4.91, 95% CI 1.13-20.70).

Cyano-bridged mixed-valence compounds have been known for a long time, i.e., Prussian Blue polymeric solids. Nevertheless, the interest in discrete complexes having a well-defined molecular nuclearity has emerged more recently. There are numerous examples of cyano-bridged mixed-valence complexes in the recent literature, as they show promising and useful applications in electrochromism, molecular magnetism and molecular electronics. In this paper, the reactivity, synthetic and structural chemistry, as well as some physical and chemical properties, of a series of discrete dinuclear mixed-valence cyano-bridged complexes of general formulae [LnCoIII(mu NC)Fe-II(CN)(5)](-) (L = pentadentate macrocyclic ligand) are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to the synthetic strategy, redox properties and metal-to-metal-charge-transfer (MMCT) band energy. Tuning the MMCT transition energy has been possible by changing the redox potential of the metal centers, both through structural and outer-sphere changes. The redox processes that involve the appearance and disappearance of these MMCT bands in the visible region have been dealt with in relation to the possible uses of the complexes. (U-Th)/He dating of late-stage authigenic goethite, combined with corrections for diffusive loss of He-4 by the He-4/He-3 methodology, reveals strong correlation between a sample's age and its depth in ferruginized channel sediments from the Yandicoogina deposit, Western Australia. Corrected ages, ranging from ca. 18 Ma near the surface to ca. 5 Ma at the bottom of the profile, indicate that ferruginization of the aggraded channels becomes progressively younger with depth. This trend is consistent with goethite precipitation at the groundwater-atmosphere interface during water table drawdown driven by the aridification of Western Australia during the Neogene. The results demonstrate that the (U-Th)/He system is ideal for dating goethite if diffusive loss corrections are applied. The approach is suitable for dating weathering reactions on Earth and should also be suitable for dating Fe oxyhydroxides in the Martian regolith.

International Relations remains faithful to its rationalist roots focusing on instrumental forms of power and authority to address global problems and, in the process, fail to acknowledge a sense of vulnerability permeating the global community. This book challenges such assumptions establishing an account of international politics that draws on the ethical assumptions of agonism. it highlights the inherent struggle associated with individual and community based engagement to address this struggle. While it does not offer one single mode of engagement to overcome vulnerability per se, it hopes to elicit a series of reactions, on the part of the reader, provoking grater reflection on the nature of such shared vulnerabilities thereby challenging the dominance of rationalist assumptions.

Previous studies about the strength of the lithosphere in the Iberia centre fail to resolve the depth of earthquakes because of the rheological uncertainties. Therefore, new contributions are considered (the crustal structure from a density model) and several parameters (tectonic regime, mantle rheology, strain rate) are checked in this paper to properly examine the role of lithospheric strength in the intraplate seismicity and the Cenozoic evolution. The strength distribution with depth, the integrated strength, the effective elastic thickness and the seismogenic thickness have been calculated by a finite element modelling of the lithosphere across the Central System mountain range and the bordering Duero and Madrid sedimentary basins. Only a dry mantle under strike-slip/extension and a strain rate of 10-15 s-1, or under extension and 10-16 s-1, causes a strong lithosphere. The integrated strength and the elastic thickness are lower in the mountain chain than in the basins. These anisotropies have been maintained since the Cenozoic and determine the mountain uplift and the biharmonic folding of the Iberian lithosphere during the Alpine deformations. The seismogenic thickness bounds the seismic activity in the upper–middle crust, and the decreasing crustal strength from the Duero Basin towards the Madrid Basin is related to a parallel increase in Plio–Quaternary deformations and seismicity. However, elasto–plastic modelling shows that current African–Eurasian convergence is resolved elastically or ductilely, which accounts for the low seismicity recorded in this region.

Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is currently a promising technology that makes solar energy efficient and cost-effective to harness. In DSSC, metal free dyes, such indoline-containing D149 and D205, are proved to be potential alternatives for traditional metal organic dyes. In this work, a DFT/TDDFT characterization for D149 and D205 were carried out using different functionals, including B3LYP, MPW1K, CAM-B3LYP and PBE0. Three different conformers for D149 and four different conformers for D205 were identified and calculated in vacuum. The performance of different functionals on calculating the maximum absorbance of the dyes in vacuum and five common solvents (acetonitrile, chloroform, ethanol, methanol, and THF) were examined and compared to determine the suitable computational setting for predicting properties of these two dyes. Furthermore, deprotonated D149 and D205 in solvents were also considered, and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) were calculated, which elucidates the substitution effect on the rhodanine ring of D149 and D205 dyes on their efficiency. Finally, D149 and D205 molecules were confirmed to be firmly anchored on ZnO surface by periodic DFT calculations. These results would shed light on the design of new highly efficiency metal-free dyes.
