Gas temperature is of major importance in plasma based surface treatment, since the surface processes are strongly temperature sensitive. The spatial distribution of reactive species responsible for surface modification is also influenced by the gas temperature. Industrial applications of RF plasma reactors require a high degree of homogeneity of the plasma in contact with the substrate. Reliable measurements of spatially resolved gas temperatures are, therefore, of great importance. The gas temperature can be obtained, e.g. by optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Common methods of OES to obtain gas temperatures from analysis of rotational distributions in excited states do not include the population dynamics influenced by cascading processes from higher electronic states. A model was developed to evaluate this effect on the apparent rotational temperature that is observed. Phase resolved OES confirmed the validity of this model. It was found that cascading leads to higher apparent temperatures, but the deviation (similar or equal to 25 K) is relatively small and can be ignored in most cases. This analysis is applied to investigate axially and radially resolved temperature profiles in an inductively coupled hydrogen RF discharge.

The temperature at which densification ends for a range of blends comprising a metallocene catalysed medium density polyethylene (PE) in two different physical forms (powder and micropellets) were investigated using a novel data acquisition system (TP Picture®), developed by Total Petrochemicals [1]. The various blends were subsequently rotomoulded and test specimens prepared for mechanical analysis to establish the relationship between densification rate and bubble size / distribution on the part properties. The micropellets exhibited more rapid bubble removal times than powder.

High resolution infrared spectra of the ν9 and ν10 perpendicular fundamentals of the allene molecule are reported, in which the J structure in the sub-bands has been partially resolved. Analysis of the latter shows that the vibrational origin ν9 = 999 cm−1, some 35 cm−1 below previous assignments. The pronounced asymmetry in the intensity distribution of the rotational structure which this assignment implies is shown to be expected theoretically, due to the Coriolis perturbations involved, and it is interpreted in terms of the sign and magnitude of the ratio of the dipole moment derivatives in the two fundamentals. The results of this analysis are shown to be in good agreement with observations on allene-1.1-d2, where similar intensity perturbations are observed, and with an independent analysis of the ν8 band of allene-h4. The A rotational constant of allene-h4 is found to have the value 4.82 ± 0.01 cm−1, and for the molecular geometry we obtain r(CH) = 1.084 A, r(CC) = 1.308 A, and HCH = 118.4°. A partial analysis of the rotational structure of the hot bands (ν9 + ν11 − ν11) and (ν10 + ν11 − ν11) is presented; these provide an example of a strong Coriolis interaction between nearly degenerate A1A2 and B1B2 pairs of vibrational levels. Some localized rotational perturbations in the ν9 and ν10 fundamentals are also noted, and their possible interpretations are discussed.

The effects of ℓ-type resonance on rovibrational bands in infrared spectra are reviewed. Observed spectra are compared with computer-simulated spectra obtained by solving the Hamiltonian matrix numerically and calculating the true (perturbed) wavenumber and intensity of each line in the band. The most obvious effects in the spectra are shown to result from intensity perturbations rather than line-shifts; in oblate symmetric tops the Q branch structure near the band center may show anomalies due to ℓ-resonance even at quite low resolution and even when the accidental resonance is not very exact. Numerical values of ℓ-doubling constants are obtained for several cyclopropane bands by comparing observed band contours at about 0.2-cm−1 resolution with computed contours. Although the constants are not determined with great precision, the sign of the ℓ-doubling constants is determined unambiguously.

In this paper, a fuzzy Markov random field (FMRF) model is used to segment land-objects into free, grass, building, and road regions by fusing remotely, sensed LIDAR data and co-registered color bands, i.e. scanned aerial color (RGB) photo and near infra-red (NIR) photo. An FMRF model is defined as a Markov random field (MRF) model in a fuzzy domain. Three optimization algorithms in the FMRF model, i.e. Lagrange multiplier (LM), iterated conditional mode (ICM), and simulated annealing (SA), are compared with respect to the computational cost and segmentation accuracy. The results have shown that the FMRF model-based ICM algorithm balances the computational cost and segmentation accuracy in land-cover segmentation from LIDAR data and co-registered bands.

Thermoluminescence, electron paramagnetic resonance and optical absorption properties of rhodonite, a natural silicate mineral, have been investigated and compared to those of synthetic crystal, pure and doped. The TL peaks grow linearly for radiation dose up to 4 kGy, and then saturate. In all the synthetic samples, 140 and 340 degrees C TL peaks are observed; the difference occurs in their relative intensities, but only 340 degrees C peak grows strongly for high doses. Al(2)O(3) and Al(2)O(3) + CaO-doped synthetic samples presented several decades intenser TL compared to that of synthetic samples doped with other impurities. A heating rate of 4 degrees C/s has been used in all the TL readings. The EPR spectrum of natural rhodonite mineral has only one huge signal around g = 2.0 with width extending from 1,000 to 6,000 G. This is due to Mn dipolar interaction, a fact proved by numerical calculation based on Van Vleck dipolar broadening expression. The optical absorption spectrum is rich in absorption bands in near-UV, visible and near-IR intervals. Several bands in the region from 540 to 340 nm are interpreted as being due to Mn(3+) in distorted octahedral environment. A broad and intense band around 1,040 nm is due to Fe(2+). It decays under heating up to 900 degrees C. At this temperature it is reduced by 80% of its original intensity. The pink, natural rhodonite, heated in air starts becoming black at approximately 600 degrees C.

The anionic complexes [Cu(L(1-))(3)](1-), L(-) = dopasemiquinone or L-dopasemiqui none, were prepared and characterized. The complexes are stable in aqueous solution showing intense absorption bands at ca. 605 nm for Cu(II)-L-dopasemiquinone and at ca. 595 nm for Cu(II)-dopasemiquinone in the UV-vis spectra, that can be assigned to intraligand transitions. Noradrenaline and adrenaline, under the same reaction conditions, did not yield Cu-complexes, despite the bands in the UV region showing that noradrenaline and adrenaline were oxidized during the process. The complexes display a resonance Raman effect, and the most enhanced bands involve ring modes and particularly the vCC + vCO stretching mode at ca. 1384 cm(-1). The free radical nature of the ligands and the oxidation state of the Cu(II) were confirmed by the EPR spectra that display absorptions assigned to organic radicals with g= 2.0005 and g = 2.0923, and for Cu(II) with g = 2.008 and g = 2.0897 for L-dopasemiquinone and dopasemiquinone, respectively. The possibility that dopamine and L-dopa can form stable and aqueous-soluble copper complexes at neutral pH, whereas noradrenaline and adrenaline cannot, may be important in understanding how Cu(II)-dopamine crosses the cellular membrane as proposed in the literature to explain the role of copper in Wilson disease. Ventral mesencephalon (VM) of fetal rat and human origin grown as free-floating roller-tube (FFRT) cultures can survive subsequent grafting to the adult rat striatum. To further explore the functional efficacy of such grafts, embryonic day 13 ventral mesencephalic tissue was grafted either after 7 days in culture or directly as dissociated cell suspensions, and compared with regard to neuronal survival and ability to normalize rotational behavior in adult rats with unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions. Other lesioned rats received injections of cell-free medium and served as controls. The amphetamine-induced rotational behavior of all 6-OHDA-lesioned animals was monitored at various time points from 18 days before transplantation and up to 80 days after transplantation. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunostaining of the histologically processed brains served to assess the long-term survival of grafted dopaminergic neurons and to correlate that with the behavioral effects. Additional cultures and acutely prepared explants were also fixed and stored for histological investigation in order to estimate the loss of dopaminergic neurons in culture and after transplantation. Similar behavioral improvements in terms of significant reductions in amphetamine-induced rotations were observed in rats grafted with FFRT cultures (127%) and rats grafted with cell suspensions (122%), while control animals showed no normalization of rotational behavior. At 84 days after transplantation, there were similar numbers of TH-immunoreactive (TH-ir) neurons in grafts of cultured tissue (775 +/- 98, mean +/- SEM) and grafts of fresh, dissociated cell suspension (806 +/- 105, mean +/- SEM). Cell counts in fresh explants, 7-day-old cultures, and grafted cultures revealed a 68.2% loss of TH-ir cells 7 days after explantation, with an additional 23.1% loss after grafting, leaving 8.7% of the original number of TH-ir cells in the intracerebral grafts. This is to be compared with a survival rate of 9.1% for the TH-ir cells in the cell-suspension grafts. Immunostaining for the calcium-binding proteins calretinin, calbindin, and parvalbumin showed no differences in the neuronal expression of these proteins between the two graft types. In conclusion, we found comparable dopaminergic cell survival and functional effects of tissue-culture grafts and cell-suspension grafts, which currently is the type of graft most commonly used for experimental and clinical grafting. In this sense the result is promising for the development of an effective in vitro storage of fetal nigral tissue, which at the same time would allow neuroprotective and neurotrophic treatment prior to intracerebral transplantation.

In this study I examine the development of three inclusive music bands in Cork city. Derived from Jellison’s research on inclusive music education, inclusive music bands involve students with disabilities coming together with typically developing peers to make and learn music that is meaningful (Jellison, 2012). As part of this study, I established three inclusive music bands to address the lack of inclusive music making and learning experiences in Cork city. Each of these bands evolved and adapted in order to be socio-culturally relevant within formal and informal settings: Circles (community education band), Till 4 (secondary school band) and Mish Mash (third level and community band). I integrated Digital Musical Instruments into the three bands, in order to ensure access to music making and learning for band members with profound physical disabilities. Digital Musical Instruments are electronic music devices that facilitate active music making with minimal movement. This is the first study in Ireland to examine the experiences of inclusive music making and learning using Digital Musical Instruments. I propose that the integration of Digital Musical Instruments into inclusive music bands has the potential to further the equality and social justice agenda in music education in Ireland. In this study, I employed qualitative research methodology, incorporating participatory action research methodology and case study design. In this thesis I reveal the experiences of being involved in an inclusive music band in Cork city. I particularly focus on examining whether the use of this technology enhances meaningful music making and learning experiences for members with disabilities within inclusive environments. To both inform and understand the person centered and adaptable nature of these inclusive bands, I draw theoretical insights from Sen’s Capabilities Approach and Deleuze and Guatarri’s Rhizome Theory. Supported by descriptive narrative from research participants and an indepth examination of literature, I discover the optimum conditions and associated challenges of inclusive music practice in Cork city.

Fibre-reinforced mouldings are of growing interest to the rotational moulding industry due to their outstanding price performance ratio. However, a particular problem that arises when using reinforcements in this process is that the process is low shear and good mixing of resin and reinforcement is not optimum under those conditions. There is also a problem of the larger/heavier reinforcing agents segregating out of the powder to lay up on the inner part surface. In this paper we report on studies to incorporate, short glass fibres into rotationally moulded parts. Four different approaches were investigated; direct addition of fibre in between two powder shots, addition of a layer of pre-compounded polyethylene-glass fibre pellets between two powder shots, addition of a layer of pre-compounded polyethylene-glass fibre powder between two powder shots and a single layer of glass-reinforced, pre-compounded powder. Results indicate that pre-compounding is necessary to gain performance enhancement and the single layer part made from glass-reinforced, pre-compounded powder exhibited the highest tensile and flexural modulus.

Rotational moulding is a unique manufacturing technique for the production of hollow plastic parts manufacturing. Moulds for rotational moulding are generally not standardized, such as for injection moulding, so each new mould must be completely manufactured except for a few ancillary parts like screws or clamps. The aim of this work has been to adapt and apply the advantages of rapid prototyping and electroforming technologies to try to achieve an innovative mould design for rotational moulding. The new innovative design integrates an electroformed shell, manufactured starting from a rapid prototyping mandrel, with different designed standard aluminium tools. The shell holder enables mould assembly with high precision a shell in a few minutes with the advantage of changing different geometries of the electroformed shells in the same tool. The overall mould cost is significantly decreased because it is only necessary to manufacture one or two shells each time, however the rest of the elements of the mould are standard and usable for an infinite number of shells, depending on size. The rapid prototyping of the mandrel enables a significant decrease the global cost of mould manufacturing as well. © 2008 Taylor & Francis Group.
