Conductivity of 54 basalt samples from ODP Sites 768 and 770 was measured as a function of temperature and fluid salinity. Porosity was also measured for all samples, and cation exchange capacity was measured for 46 of the samples. Porosity measurements indicated that porosity is underestimated for basalts like these, unless one uses extensive drying at high vacuum. At salinities greater than 29 ppt, and throughout the range of salinity and temperatures likely in situ, sample conductivity (Co) is controlled by porosity (phi) according to the Archie relation Co = 0.22*Cw phi*1-3 (orFF = 4.5/f1.3), where Cw is conductivity of the pore fluids and FF = Cw/CO is the formation factor. At lower salinity, clay-surface conduction or microcrack conduction may dominate. We are unable to distinguish reliably between the two mechanisms, but we do detect their effects subtly at high salinity and strongly at low salinity.

We report measurements of magnetic intensity, inclination, initial susceptibility, Koenigsberger's ratio, saturation magnetization, and Curie temperatures of 68 basalt samples from the Leg 83 section of Hole 504B. As in the upper part of the hole, reversely magnetized units predominate. Intensities of natural remanent magnetization vary widely, but the range of variation is an order of magnitude less than in the upper part of the hole. This and the other properties measured indicate that the magnetic characteristics of basalts from Hole 504B have been strongly affected by hydrothermal alteration, particularly in the deeper, Leg 83 section. The alteration states of the magnetic samples were studies using Xray diffraction, electron microprobe, X-ray fluorescence, and ion coupled plasma. Our results suggest three alteration zones in Hole 504B: a low-temperature zone (274.5-890 m) and two high-temperature zones (890-1050 m and 1050- 1350 m), differing in the number of veins observed in the samples and presumably differing in the volumes of hydrothermal fluids which reacted with the basalts.

We have reanalyzed the porosity, bulk density, and seismic velocity information collected from continental rise Sites 1095, 1096, and 1101 during the drilling of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 178 (Fig. F1). The purpose is to provide a comprehensive composite digital set of data readily available for future studies aimed at well-seismic correlation. The work originates from the occurrence of overlapping sets of physical parameters and acoustic velocity collected by different methods (downhole logging, core logging, laboratory determination, and derivation from seismic data) and from different holes at the same site. These data do not always provide the same information because of difficulties encountered at each specific hole or methodological differences. In addition, a basic correlation between these parameters and onsite multichannel seismic (MCS) data is presented.

The solution rate of biogenic opal in near-surface sediments in the Central Equatorial Pacific is three to eight orders of magnitude lower than similar acid-cleaned samples. Iron, magnesium and calcium aluminosilicates may be the minerals which are forming on the surface of the opal and reducing its solution rate. The scale height of the system studied suggests that diffusive and not advective processes are primarily responsible for the removal of dissolved silica in sediments. Solution budget calculations for this area suggest that 90-99 per cent of the biogenic opal produced in surface waters dissolves before reaching the sediment-water interface; an additional amount dissolves within the sediment and diffuses into bottom waters leaving 0.05-0.15 per cent of the original amount of opal produced by organisms in the sedimentary record. The relative solution potential of the upper 1000 m of the water column varies by more than an order of magnitude from the Antarctic to Equator and may have a pronounced effect on the accumulation rate of biogenic opal in underlying sediments.

This paper presents a geotechnical characterization of the glacigenic sediments in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, based on the shipboard physical properties data obtained during Leg 119, combined with results of land-based analyses of 24 whole-round core samples. Main emphasis is placed on the land-based studies, which included oedometer consolidation tests, triaxial and simple shear tests for undrained shear strength, permeability tests in oedometer and triaxial cell, Atterberg limits, and grain-size analyses. The bulk of the tested sediments comprise overconsolidated diamictites of a relatively uniform lithology. The overconsolidation results from a combination of glacial loading and sediment overburden subsequently removed by extensive glacial erosion of the shelf. This leads to downhole profiles of physical properties that have been observed not to change as a function of the thickness of present overburden. A number of fluctuations in the parameters shows a relatively systematic trend and most likely results from changes in the proximity to the ice sheet grounding line in response to variations in the glacial regime. Very low permeabilities mainly result from high preconsolidation stresses (Pc'). Pc' values up to 10,000 kPa were estimated from the oedometer tests, and empirical estimates based on undrained shear strengths (up to 2500 kPa) indicate that the oedometer results are conservative. The diamictites generally classify as inactive, of low to medium plasticity, and they consolidate with little deformation, even when subjected to great stresses. This is the first report of geotechnical data from deep boreholes on the Antarctic continental shelf, but material of similar character can also be expected in other areas around the Antarctic.

Mineral and chemical compositions and physical properties of diatomaceous clayey-siliceous sediments from the Sea of Okhotsk are studied. Accumulation rates of silica are determined. Their compositional model based on silica content is similar to that of Late Jurassic and Olenekian-Middle Anisian cherts from the Sikhote Alin region. Thickness of Holocene siliceous unit and accumulation rates of siliceous deposits depended on bioproductivity in the upper water layer and seafloor topography. Accumulation rates of amorphous SiO2 (0.05-5.7 g/cm**2/ka) and free SiO2 (0.5-11.6 g/cm**2/ka) are minimal on seamounts and maximal in depressions near foothills. These values match accumulation rates of free SiO2 in Triassic and Late Jurassic basins of the Sikhote Alin region (0.33-3 g/cm**2/ka). Comparison of composition and accumulation rates of silica shows that Triassic and Late Jurassic siliceous sequences of Sikhote Alin could accumulate in a marginal marine basin near a continent.

Several studies indicate that the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) off the Pacific coast of Japan has induced slip to the trench and triggered landslides in the Japan Trench. In order to better understand these processes, detailed mapping and shallow-coring landslides at the trench as well as Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) deep drilling to recover the plate boundary décollement (Japan Trench Fast Earthquake Drilling Project, JFAST) have been conducted. In this study we report sediment core data from the rapid response R/V SONNE cruise (SO219A) to the Japan Trench, evidencing a Mass Transport Deposit (MTD) in the uppermost section later drilled at this JFAST-site during IODP Expedition 343. A 8.7 m long gravity core (GeoB16423-1) recovered from ~7,000 m water depth reveals a 8 m sequence of semi-consolidated mud clast breccias embedded in a distorted chaotic sediment matrix. The MTD is covered by a thin veneer of 50 cm hemipelagic, bioturbated diatomaceous mud. This stratigraphic boundary can be clearly distinguished by using physical properties data from Multi Sensor Core Logging and from fall-cone penetrometer shear strength measurements. The geochemical analysis of the pore-water shows undisturbed linear profiles measured from the seafloor downcore across the stratigraphic contact between overlying younger background-sediment and MTD below. This indicates that the investigated section has not been affected by a recent sediment destabilization in the course of the giant Tohoku-Oki earthquake event. Instead, we report an older landslide which occurred between 700 and 10,000 years ago, implying that submarine mass movements are dominant processes along the Japan Trench. However, they occur on local sites and not during each megathrust earthquake.

Seventeen samples from pillow or massive "zero age" fresh basalts from ODP Legs 106 and 109 were studied in order to examine their magnetic properties and oxidation degree. Thermomagnetic analyses of studied samples show Curie temperatures from 127°C to 220°C with reversible heating and cooling curves. Hysteresis parameters indicate the contribution of large Pseudo-Single Domain (PSD) grain of titanomagnetites with saturation magnetization between 0.4 and 0.7 emu/g which is almost twice that those of other recent mid-oceanic dredged basalts (e.g., FAMOUS and CYAMEX-RISE). The large grain sizes and higher magnetic mineral concentration may suggest a slower cooling of these basalts compared to those previously studied. Electron microprobe analyses of titanomagnetite grains combined with Curie point determinations give z = 0.3 for the degree of low temperature oxidation, which is close to the other values reported for low temperature oxidation of mid-oceanic ridge basalts.

Sites 815 and 817 were drilled near the Townsville Trough during Leg 133 of the Ocean Drilling Program. The physical properties, compressional-wave velocity, and consolidation characteristics indicate that the periplatform carbonate sediments maintain more water content and lower compressional velocity near the Queensland Plateau than the clayey hemipelagic sediments, which have a clay content of up to 60%. Bulk density, void ratio or porosity, water content, and compressional-wave velocity are shown to have a linear relationship with burial depth. Between 3.5 and 5 Ma (about 100-500 mbsf), these physical properties maintained a constant rate vs. the depth in core because of the fast sedimentation-rate effect at Site 815. However, compressionalwave velocity still increases downward in this section. The clay content in this section causes an increase of bulk modulus and compaction effect. At Site 817, scarce terrigenous mud content and abundant carbonate content (88%-97%) cause a straight line relationship between physical properties and burial depth. During the consolidation test, we show that dominant micritic particles may cause faster acoustic velocity than sediments composed mainly of coccoliths. The bulk modulus ratio increasing rate in the clay-rich carbonate sediments is almost 4.5 times higher than in the clay-free periplatform carbonate sediments.

The book presents results of comprehensive geological and geophysical studies, carried out in the Cape Verde fault zone in the 3-rd cruise of R/V Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov (1986). Detailed characterization of bottom relief, thickness and structure of the sedimentary cover, magnetic field, crust structure, lithology and stratigraphy of sediments, petrography and geochemistry of magmatic rocks. Conclusions about tectonic layering of the crust and upper mantle in the fault zone, and about a concurrent structural section of large mantle inhomogeneities have been done. The book is the first monographic description of a major fault structure of the ocean floor.

The stress history, permeability, and compressibility of sediments from Demerara Rise recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 207 were determined using one-dimensional incremental load consolidation and low-gradient flow pump permeability tests. Relationships among void ratio, effective stress, and hydraulic conductivity are presented for sampled lithologic units and used to reconstruct effective stress, permeability, and in situ void ratio profiles for a transect of three sites across Demerara Rise. Results confirm that a significant erosional event occurred on the northeastern flank of the rise during the late Miocene, resulting in the removal of ~220 m of upper Oligocene-Miocene deposits. Although Neogene and Paleogene sediments tend to be overconsolidated, Cretaceous sediments are normally consolidated to underconsolidated, suggesting the presence of overpressure. A pronounced drop in permeability occurs at the transition from the Cretaceous black shales into the overlying Maastrichtian-upper Paleocene chalks and clays. The development of a hydraulic seal at this boundary may be responsible for overpressure in the Cretaceous deposits, leading to the lower overconsolidation ratios of these sediments. Coupled with large regional variations in sediment thickness (overburden stresses), the higher permeability overpressured Cretaceous sediments represent a regional lateral fluid conduit on Demerara Rise, possibly venting methane-rich fluids where it outcrops on the margin's northeastern flank.

A total of 500.7 m of continuous, vertical, oceanic gabbroic section was recovered during Leg 118. The gabbros obtained exhibited various degrees of alteration and deformation, which gave us a good opportunity to study the magnetic properties of oceanic gabbros. Many of these gabbros, which are mainly Fe-Ti oxide gabbros, have strong and unstable secondary magnetic components that were acquired during drilling. Stable inclinations, which are probably in-situ magnetic directions, show a single polarity, with an average value of 66° (±5°), meaning that the studied 501-m oceanic gabbroic block may be a candidate for the source of the marine magnetic anomaly. This may also imply that the metamorphism of oceanic gabbros causing acquisition of magnetization probably occurred within one geomagnetic polarity chron (about 0.3 to 0.7 m.y.) after these gabbros formed at the ridge, leading us to conclude that oceanic gabbros record the so-called Vine-Matthews-Morley type of initial magnetization at the ridge. The average intensity value of stable magnetic components of individual samples, which may be a minimum estimate for remanent magnetizations, is 1.6 A/m. Assuming this magnetic intensity value and a uniform magnetization within an oceanic gabbroic layer having a thickness of 4.5 km (i.e., whole layer 3), it is possible to explain most of the marine magnetic anomaly. If magnetic properties of the samples obtained from Hole 735B are common to oceanic gabbros, layer 3 may contribute more significantly to seafloor spreading magnetic anomalies than previously thought.
