Les cancers du col utérin et de la vessie prennent tous deux leur origine dans les sites muqueux et peuvent évoluer lentement de lésions superficielles (lésions squameuses intra-épithéliales de bas à haut grade (HSIL) et carcinomes in situ du col utérin (CIS); ou tumeurs non musculo-invasives de la vessie (NMIBC)) à des cancers invasifs plus avancés. L'éthiologie de ces deux cancers est néanmoins très différente. Le cancer du col utérin est, à l'échelle mondiale, le deuxième cancer le plus mortel chez la femme. Ce cancer résulte de l'infection des cellules basales de l'épithélium stratifié du col utérin par le papillomavirus humain à haut risque (HPV). Les vaccins prophylactiques récemment développés contre le HPV (Gardasil® et Cervarix®) sont des moyens de prévention efficaces lorsqu'ils sont administrés chez les jeunes filles qui ne sont pas encore sexuellement actives; cependant ces vaccins ne permettent pas la régression des lésions déjà existantes. Malgré un développement actif, les vaccins thérapeutiques ciblant les oncogènes viraux E6/E7 n'ont montré qu'une faible efficacité clinique jusqu'à présent. Nous avons récemment démontré qu'une immunisation sous-cutanée (s.c.) était capable de faire régresser les petites tumeurs génitales chez 90% des souris, mais chez seulement 20% des souris présentant de plus grandes tumeurs. Dans cette étude, nous avons développé une nouvelle stratégie où la vaccination est associée à une application locale (intra-vaginale (IVAG)) d'agonistes de TLR. Celle-ci induit une augmentation des cellules T CD8 totales ainsi que T CD8 spécifiques au vaccin, mais pas des cellules T CD4. L'attraction sélective des cellules T CD8 est permise par leur expression des récepteurs de chemokines CCR5 et CXCR3 ainsi que par les ligants E-selectin. La vaccination, suivie de l'application IVAG de CpG, a conduit, chez 75% des souris, à la régression de grandes tumeurs établies. Le cancer de la vessie est le deuxième cancer urologique le plus fréquente. La plupart des tumeurs sont diagnostiquées comme NMIBC et sont restreintes à la muqueuse de la vessie, avec une forte propension à la récurrence et/ou progression après une résection locale. Afin de développer des vaccins contre les antigènes associés à la tumeur (TAA), il est nécessaire de trouver un moyen d'induire une réponse immunitaire CD8 spécifique dans la vessie. Pour ce faire, nous avons comparé différentes voies d'immunisation, en utilisant un vaccin composé d'adjuvants et de l'oncogène de HPV (E7) comme modèle. Les vaccinations s.c. et IVAG ont toutes deux induit un nombre similaire de cellules T CD8 spécifiques du vaccin dans la vessie, alors que l'immunisation intra-nasale fut inefficace. Les voies s.c. et IVAG ont induit des cellules T CD8 spécifiques du vaccin exprimant principalement aL-, a4- et le ligand d'E-selectin, suggérant que ces intégrines/sélectines sont responsables de la relocalisation des cellules T dans la vessie. Une unique immunisation avec E7 a permis une protection tumorale complète lors d'une étude prophylactique, indépendemment de la voie d'immunisation. Dans une étude thérapeutique, seules les vaccinations s.c. et IVAG ont efficacement conduit, chez environ 50% des souris, à la régression de tumeurs de la vessie établies, alors que l'immunisation intra-nasale n'a eu aucun effet. La régression de la tumeur est correlée avec l'infiltration dans la tumeur des cellules T CD8 spécifiques au vaccin et la diminution des cellules T régulatrices (Tregs). Afin d'augmenter l'efficacité de l'immunisation avec le TAA, nous avons testé une vaccination suivie de l'instillation d'agonistes de TLR3 et TLR9, ou d'un vaccin Salmonella Typhi (Ty21a). Cette stratégie a entraîné une augmentation des cellules T CD8 effectrices spécifiques du vaccin dans la vessie, bien qu'à différentes échelles. Ty21a étant l'immunostimulant le plus efficace, il mérite d'être étudié de manière plus approfondie dans le contexte du NMIBC. - Both cervical and bladder cancer originates in mucosal sites and can slowly progress from superficial lesions (low to high-grade squamous intra-epithelial lesions (HSIL) and carcinoma in situ (CIS) in the cervix; or non-muscle invasive tumors in the bladder (NMIBC)), to more advanced invasive cancers. The etiology of these two cancers is however very different. Cervical cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in women worldwide. This cancer results from the infection of the basal cells of the stratified epithelium of the cervix by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). The recent availability of prophylactic vaccines (Gardasil® and Cervarix®) against HPV is an effective strategy to prevent this cancer when administered to young girls before sexual activity; however, these vaccines do not induce regression of established lesions. Despite active development, therapeutic vaccines targeting viral oncogenes E6/E7 had limited clinical efficacy to date. We recently reported that subcutaneous (s.c.) immunization was able to regress small genital tumors in 90% of the mice, but only 20% of mice had regression of larger tumors. Here, we developed a new strategy where vaccination is combined with the local (intravaginal (IVAG)) application of TLR agonists. This new strategy induced an increase of both total and vaccine-specific CD8 T cells in cervix-vagina, but not CD4 T cells. The selective attraction of CD8 T cells is mediated by the expression of CCR5 and CXCR3 chemokine receptors and E-selectin ligands in these cells. Vaccination followed by IVAG application of CpG resulted in tumor regression of large established tumors in 75% of the mice. Bladder cancer is the second most common urological malignancy. Most tumors are diagnosed as NMIBC, and are restricted to the mucosal bladder with a high propensity to recur and/or progress after local resection. Aiming to develop vaccines against tumor associated antigens (TAA) it is necessary to investigate how to target vaccine-specific T-cell immune responses to the bladder. Here we thus compared using an adjuvanted HPV oncogene (E7) vaccine, as a model, different routes of immunization. Both s.c. and IVAG vaccination induced similar number of vaccine-specific CD8 T-cells in the bladder, whereas intranasal (i.n.) immunization was ineffective. S.c. and IVAG routes induced predominantly aL-, a4- and E-selectin ligand-expressing vaccine-specific CD8 T-cells suggesting that these integrin/selectin are responsible for T-cell homing to the bladder. A single E7 immunization conferred full tumor protection in a prophylactic setting, irrespective of the immunization route. In a therapeutic setting, only ivag and s.c. vaccination efficiently regressed established bladder-tumors in ca. 50 % of mice, whereas i.n. immunization had no effect. Tumor regression correlated with vaccine- specific CD8 T cell tumor-infiltration and decrease of regulatory T cells (Tregs). To increase efficacy of TAA immunization, we tested vaccination followed by the local instillation of TLR3 or TLR9 agonist or of a Salmonella Typhi vaccine (Ty21a). This strategy resulted in an increase of vaccine-specific effector CD8 T cells in the bladder, although at different magnitudes. Ty21a being the most efficient, it deserves further investigation in the context of NMIBC. We further tested another strategy to improve therapies of NMIBC. In the murine MB49 bladder tumor model, we replaced the intravesical (ives) BCG therapy by another vaccine strain the Salmonella Ty21a. Ives Ty21a induced bladder tumor regression at least as efficiently as BCG. Ty21a bacteria did not infect nor survive neither in healthy nor in tumor-bearing bladders, suggesting its safety. Moreover, Ty21a induced a transient inflammatory response in healthy bladders, mainly through infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages that rapidly returned to basal levels, confirming its potential safety. The tumor regression was associated to a robust infiltration of immune cells, and secretion of cytokines in urines. Infection of murine tumor cell lines by Ty21a resulted in cell apoptosis. The infection of both murine and human urothelial cell lines induced secretion of in vitro inflammatory cytokines. Ty21a may be an attractive alternative for the ives treatment of NMIBC after transurethral resection and thus deserves more investigation.

We study the determining factors of cience-based cooperation in the case of small and micro firms. In this research, we propose an analytical framework based on the resource-based view of the firm and we identify a set of organisational characteristics, which we classify as internal, external and structural factors. Each factor can be linked to at least one reason, from the firm¿s point of view, to cooperate with universities and public research centres. Each reason can, in turn, be used as an indicator of a firm¿s organisational needs or organisational capacities. In order to validate the theoretical model, we estimate a logistic regression that models the propensity to participate in science-based cooperation activities within a sample of 285 small and micro firms located in Barcelona. The results show the key role played by the absorptive capacity of new and small companies.

Androgen receptor (AR) is a major therapeutic target that plays pivotal roles in prostate cancer (PCa) and androgen insensitivity syndromes. We previously proposed that compounds recruited to ligand-binding domain (LBD) surfaces could regulate AR activity in hormone-refractory PCa and discovered several surface modulators of AR function. Surprisingly, the most effective compounds bound preferentially to a surface of unknown function [binding function 3 (BF-3)] instead of the coactivator-binding site [activation function 2 (AF-2)]. Different BF-3 mutations have been identified in PCa or androgen insensitivity syndrome patients, and they can strongly affect AR activity. Further, comparison of AR x-ray structures with and without bound ligands at BF-3 and AF-2 showed structural coupling between both pockets. Here, we combine experimental evidence and molecular dynamic simulations to investigate whether BF-3 mutations affect AR LBD function and dynamics possibly via allosteric conversation between surface sites. Our data indicate that AF-2 conformation is indeed closely coupled to BF-3 and provide mechanistic proof of their structural interconnection. BF-3 mutations may function as allosteric elicitors, probably shifting the AR LBD conformational ensemble toward conformations that alter AF-2 propensity to reorganize into subpockets that accommodate N-terminal domain and coactivator peptides. The induced conformation may result in either increased or decreased AR activity. Activating BF-3 mutations also favor the formation of another pocket (BF-4) in the vicinity of AF-2 and BF-3, which we also previously identified as a hot spot for a small compound. We discuss the possibility that BF-3 may be a protein-docking site that binds to the N-terminal domain and corepressors. AR surface sites are attractive pharmacological targets to develop allosteric modulators that might be alternative lead compounds for drug design.

All social surveys suffer from different types of errors, of which one of the most studied is non-response bias. Non-response bias is a systematic error that occurs because individuals differ in their accessibility and propensity to participate in a survey according to their own characteristics as well as those from the survey itself. The extent of the problem heavily depends on the correlation between response mechanisms and key survey variables. However, non-response bias is difficult to measure or to correct for due to the lack of relevant data about the whole target population or sample. In this paper, non-response follow-up surveys are considered as a possible source of information about non-respondents. Non-response follow-ups, however, suffer from two methodological issues: they themselves operate through a response mechanism that can cause potential non-response bias, and they pose a problem of comparability of measure, mostly because the survey design differs between main survey and non-response follow-up. In order to detect possible bias, the survey variables included in non-response surveys have to be related to the mechanism of participation, but not be sensitive to measurement effects due to the different designs. Based on accumulated experience of four similar non-response follow-ups, we studied the survey variables that fulfill these conditions. We differentiated socio-demographic variables that are measurement-invariant but have a lower correlation with non-response and variables that measure attitudes, such as trust, social participation, or integration in the public sphere, which are more sensitive to measurement effects but potentially more appropriate to account for the non-response mechanism. Our results show that education level, work status, and living alone, as well as political interest, satisfaction with democracy, and trust in institutions are pertinent variables to include in non-response follow-ups of general social surveys. - See more at: https://ojs.ub.uni-konstanz.de/srm/article/view/6138#sthash.u87EeaNG.dpuf

Barn owl (Tyto alba) siblings preen and offer food items to one another, behaviours that can be considered prosocial because they benefit a conspecific by relieving distress or need. In experimental broods, we analysed whether such behaviours were reciprocated, preferentially exchanged between specific phenotypes, performed to avoid harassment and food theft or signals of hierarchy status. Three of the results are consistent with the hypothesis of direct reciprocity. First, food sharing was reciprocated in three-chick broods but not in pairs of siblings, that is when nestlings could choose a partner with whom to develop a reciprocating interaction. Second, a nestling was more likely to give a prey item to its sibling if the latter individual had preened the former. Third, siblings matched their investment in preening each other. Manipulation of age hierarchy showed that food stealing was directed towards older siblings but was not performed to compensate for a low level of cooperation received. Social behaviours were related to melanin-based coloration, suggesting that animals may signal their propensity to interact socially. The most prosocial phenotype (darker reddish) was also the phenotype that stole more food, and the effect of coloration on prosocial behaviour depended upon rank and sex, suggesting that colour-related prosociality is state dependent.

Based on four different public R&D calls from the Catalan government, this article evaluates the propensity of entrants and young firms to apply for R&D public grants and, as compared to their counterparts, their capacity for obtaining subsides. This analysis is particularly relevant since entrants and young firms encounter greater market difficulties. Our sample contains 22,139 firms and corresponds to a merge of two databases: one from the Catalan agency responsible for promoting private innovation (ACC1Ó) and the other from the Mercantile Register. Merging these databases has two advantages. Firstly, participants and non-participants in the public R&D call (“InnoEmpresa”) are included and, secondly, it provides us with information at firm and project level. The period of observation is between 2006 and 2010, since some explanatory variables are lagged by one period. We apply a two-step methodology. Our results show that entrants and young firms show a lower propensity to apply for R&D subsidies and to obtain R&D public grants. Firm size, exports and participation in a previous call show a positive impact on the likelihood of applying, and firms located in the Barcelona metropolitan area have a greater propensity to apply. Additionally, project quality and R&D cooperative reports presented jointly with other partners have a positive impact on the likelihood of obtaining the R&D subsidy. Finally, firms that have previously obtained an R&D subsidy do not exhibit a greater propensity for obtaining subsequent grants. Using microdata, we analyse the determinants of firm relocation and conventional outsourcing decisions as a way to reduce employment. The results for a sample of 32 countries show the relevance of factors not considered previously in the literature. Firms that are below average in quality or innovation have a higher propensity to externalise part of their production through outsourcing, while lower relative profitability and longer time to market for new products each imply a higher probability of relocation.

This paper investigates the extent to which the gap in total factor productivity between small and large firms is due to differences in the endowment of factors determining productivity and to the returns associated with these factors. We place particular emphasis on the contribution of differences in the propensity to innovate and in the use of skilled labor across firms of different size. Empirical evidence from a representative sample of Spanish manufacturing firms corroborates that both differences in endowments and returns to innovation and skilled labor significantly contribute to the productivity gap between small and large firms. In addition, it is observed that the contribution of innovation to this gap is caused only by differences in quantity, while differences in returns have no effect; in the case of human capital, however, most of the effect can be attributed to increasing differences in returns between small and large firms.

Tutkimuksen päämääränä oli selvittää laadullisin menetelmin millaisia kustannusvaikutuksia laajavaikutteiset palvelutasopoikkeamat, eli erilaiset viat tai häiriöt tietoliikennepalveluissa aiheuttavat kohdeyrityksen tietoliikennepalveluiden tuotannossa. Tutkimus muistutti lähtökohdiltaan paljolti riskianalyysia, sillä sen tavoitteina oli tunnistaa merkittävimmät palvelutasopoikkeamien aiheuttajat, arvioida palvelutasopoikkeaman kustannusvaikutuksia ja pohtia millaisin toimin ja kustannuksin palvelutasopoikkeamia voitaisiin ehkäistä. Tutkimusongelmaa lähestyttiin jakamalla palvelutasopoikkeaman kustannusvaikutukset viankorjauksesta aiheutuviin välittömiin ja asiakasvaikutusten kautta mahdollisesti syntyviin välillisiin kustannuksiin. Välillisiä kustannuksia aiheuttaviksi ilmiöiksi tunnistettiin palvelukatkon aiheuttama liikennetulomenetys, nykyisten tai potentiaalisten asiakkaiden menettäminen ja nykyisten asiakkaiden alentunut ostohalukkuus. Yhteenvetona tutkimuksessa tehtyihin havaintoihin perustuen välilliset kustannukset eivät osoittautuneet niin merkittäviksi kuin tutkimuksen aloitusvaiheessa oletettiin, mutta lisätutkimus aiheesta voi olla perusteltua.

The rapid economic growth in China has resulted in environmental challenges ranging from air pollution to water-related issues. Thus supporting clean technology, or cleantech, that encompasses industries that focus on alternative energy, pollution and recycling, power supplies and conservation has become one of the focal points in the Chinese economic policy for the next decade. Simultaneously, the Finnish government has initiated programs to support the internationalisation of domestic cleantech companies in an attempt to spiral the industry into one of the pillars of Finnish economic growth. This study concentrates on the conjunction of these two themes and studies the challenges faced by Finnish cleantech SMEs in the Chinese market. Consequently, the study answers the following sub questions: 1. What human and financial resource-based challenges do Finnish cleantech SMEs face in the Chinese market and what are their solutions? 2. What knowledge-based challenges do Finnish cleantech SMEs face in the Chinese market and how can these difficulties be resolved? 3. What network-based challenges do Finnish cleantech SMEs face in the Chinese market, how do they relate to the resource- and knowledge-based challenges, and how can these difficulties be resolved? This qualitative study is conducted by analysing four semi structured interviews collected from four Finnish SMEs that operate in China. The findings of the study indicate that in human resources the most important challenges are related to the hiring and retaining of employees. In contrast to extant academic literature results distinguish salary and social status as the main solutions to this challenge. Regarding financial resources it is discovered that cleantech companies enjoy a benign business environment in China and benefit from the Chinese government’s support for cleantech industry. Challenges related to knowledge resources can be grouped into categories with the most interesting knowledge flows being the stream of local market knowledge into to the foreign parent company and the outward flow of manufacturing and business practice information into the target venture. The challenge related to the first flow is gathering relevant information and the main solutions are clustering at the foreign location and hiring knowledge prior to internationalisation. Regarding the second flow the main challenge is related to intellectual property rights and the most interesting solution is the purposeful transformation of explicit knowledge into tacit knowledge. Finally, it is discovered that networks, called guanxi in China, greatly affect the business processes. Within the guanxi system there is the concept of face which was found to affect employee propensity to stay as well as, as a novel academic result, employees’ knowledge sharing intention.

The economic importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurship has increased significantly in recent decades and entrepreneurial activity and SMEs are deemed vital to economic progress. Therefore, it is justifiable to study how small firms and entrepreneurs can enhance their performance and emergence in the turbulent economic environment. The concept of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) has recently attracted considerable attention in the field of entrepreneurship research. EO generally refers to a firm’s propensity to be innovative, to be proactive and to take risks. A majority of EO studies so far have found that adopting EO associated entrepreneurial behaviors will help firms to create or sustain a high level of performance. This dissertation explores the main drivers and performance implications of EO for SMEs in time of economic crisis. Hence the first objective of this dissertation is to examine the performance implications of EO and to test the role of EO on how firms are treated by the crisis at operative level. The second objective is to expand the prevailing understanding of determinants of EO by exploring the relationship between owner's work related values, attitudes, demographic characteristics, firm’s financial resources and EO. EO was found to be a significant and positive factor behind a firm’s long run growth. Hence it can be said that EO has positive implications for firm performance. But on the other hand, during a time of economic crisis the different dimensions of EO had both positive and negative effects on performance of SMEs. The performance implications varied across different stages of the crisis and were also dependent on what measure was used for measuring the performance. The main drivers of EO in SMEs were the personal work related values of the entrepreneur and his/her prior experience as an entrepreneur. The intrinsic work values related to interest, responsibility, challenge, self-development or intellectual stimulation and values related to status, power, achievement and recognition had a positive effect on the level of EO. On the other hand, extrinsic values related to high income, material possessions, benefits such as generous holidays, job security, and comfort through good working conditions decreased the level of EO

The Travel and Tourism field is undergoing changes due to the rapid development of information technology and digital services. Online travel has profoundly changed the way travel and tourism organizations interact with their customers. Mobile technology such as mobile services for pocket devices (e.g. mobile phones) has the potential to take this development even further. Nevertheless, many issues have been highlighted since the early days of mobile services development (e.g. the lack of relevance, ease of use of many services). However, the wide adoption of smartphones and the mobile Internet in many countries as well as the formation of so-called ecosystems between vendors of mobile technology indicate that many of these issues have been overcome. Also when looking at the numbers of downloaded applications related to travel in application stores like Google Play, it seems obvious that mobile travel and tourism services are adopted and used by many individuals. However, as business is expected to start booming in the mobile era, many issues have a tendency to be overlooked. Travelers are generally on the go and thus services that work effectively in mobile settings (e.g. during a trip) are essential. Hence, the individuals’ perceived drivers and barriers to use mobile travel and tourism services in on-site or during trip settings seem particularly valuable to understand; thus this is one primary aim of the thesis. We are, however, also interested in understanding different types of mobile travel service users. Individuals may indeed be very different in their propensity to adopt and use technology based innovations (services). Research is also switching more from investigating issues of mobile service development to understanding individuals’ usage patterns of mobile services. But designing new mobile services may be a complex matter from a service provider perspective. Hence, our secondary aim is to provide insights into drivers and barriers of mobile travel and tourism service development from a holistic business model perspective. To accomplish the research objectives seven different studies have been conducted over a time period from 2002 – 2013. The studies are founded on and contribute to theories within diffusion of innovations, technology acceptance, value creation, user experience and business model development. Several different research methods are utilized: surveys, field and laboratory experiments and action research. The findings suggest that a successful mobile travel and tourism service is a service which supports one or several mobile motives (needs) of individuals such as spontaneous needs, time-critical arrangements, efficiency ambitions, mobility related needs (location features) and entertainment needs. The service could be customized to support travelers’ style of traveling (e.g. organized travel or independent travel) and should be easy to use, especially easy to take into use (access, install and learn) during a trip, without causing security concerns and/or financial risks for the user. In fact, the findings suggest that the most prominent barrier to the use of mobile travel and tourism services during a trip is an individual’s perceived financial cost (entry costs and usage costs). It should, however, be noted that regulations are put in place in the EU regarding data roaming prices between European countries and national telecom operators are starting to see ‘international data subscriptions’ as a sales advantage (e.g. Finnish Sonera provides a data subscription in the Baltic and Nordic region at the same price as in Finland), which will enhance the adoption of mobile travel and tourism services also in international contexts. In order to speed up the adoption rate travel service providers could consider e.g. more local initiatives of free Wi-Fi networks, development of services that can be used, at least to some extent, in an offline mode (do not require costly network access during a trip) and cooperation with telecom operators (e.g. lower usage costs for travelers who use specific mobile services or travel with specific vendors). Furthermore, based on a developed framework for user experience of mobile trip arrangements, the results show that a well-designed mobile site and/or native application, which preferably supports integration with other mobile services, is a must for true mobile presence. In fact, travel service providers who want to build a relationship with their customers need to consider a downloadable native application, but in order to be found through the mobile channel and make contact with potential new customers, a mobile website should be available. Moreover, we have made a first attempt with cluster analysis to identify user categories of mobile services in a travel and tourism context. The following four categories were identified: info-seekers, checkers, bookers and all-rounders. For example “all-rounders”, represented primarily by individuals who use their pocket device for almost any of the investigated mobile travel services, constituted primarily of 23 to 50 year old males with high travel frequency and great online experience. The results also indicate that travel service providers will increasingly become multi-channel providers. To manage multiple online channels, closely integrated and hybrid online platforms for different devices, supporting all steps in a traveler process should be considered. It could be useful for travel service providers to focus more on developing browser-based mobile services (HTML5-solutions) than native applications that work only with specific operating systems and for specific devices. Based on an action research study and utilizing a holistic business model framework called STOF we found that HTML5 as an emerging platform, at least for now, has some limitations regarding the development of the user experience and monetizing the application. In fact, a native application store (e.g. Google Play) may be a key mediator in the adoption of mobile travel and tourism services both from a traveler and a service provider perspective. Moreover, it must be remembered that many device and mobile operating system developers want service providers to specifically create services for their platforms and see native applications as a strategic advantage to sell more devices of a certain kind. The mobile telecom industry has moved into a battle of ecosystems where device makers, developers of operating systems and service developers are to some extent forced to choose their development platforms.

This study focuses on the relationship between organizational network competence and the internationalization process of small- and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Over recent decades, the global business environment has become increasingly conducive to internationalization of small firms. A central facilitating factor in the process has been the emergence of networked business relationships between internationalizing firms. Research on SME internationalization has found that certain types of structures and dynamics of business networks allow SMEs access to the resources they need to enter foreign markets. This consequently means that their internationalization often becomes to depend on the networks they are embedded in. However, research so far has mostly ignored the possibility that the organizational ability to develop and manage business network relationships, network competence, may be a major underlying factor in determining how well SMEs can leverage their network relationships to enter foreign markets and consequently may determine in large part how successful their internationalization process turns out to be. This study aims to respond to those gaps, by empirically examining how the development of network competence in internationalizing SMEs influences the internationalization outcomes that they can expect, and how such network competence is conceptualized and developed. Using a mixed methods approach, survey data collected from 298 Finnish SMEs across five industry sectors is first used to examine how levels of network competence are related to internationalization propensity of SMEs and their subsequent international performance, growth and profitability as internationally operating firms. In order to illustrate in more detail the ways in which network competence is conceptualized and how it develops during the internationalization process of an SME, qualitative data from internationally operating Finnish SMEs are used. Longitudinal interview data of an internationalizing Finnish SME is accompanied by data gathered through a series of semistructured interviews of Finnish and Russian managers involved in mutual business relationship dyads. Structurally, this thesis examines the research issue as an article-based dissertation, consisting of five journal and conference publications. Three of these publications are based on the quantitative data, and the remaining two apply the qualitative interview data. The results find several aspects where network competence has a positive influence on the success of internationalizing SMEs, how it develops and what it entails conceptually in this context. Quantitatively, the level of network competence is found to have a positive relationship to various internationalization outcomes, including the propensity of SMEs to enter foreign markets and on their subsequent international performance, their growth and their profitability. Additionally, the positive relationship is divided between the relationship-specific and cross-relational dimension of network competence, in that the influence of the former is relevant for the propensity to internationalize, while the latter is for the growth and profitability of the already internationalized SMEs. Qualitatively, the results suggest, firstly, that the development process of network competence does not necessarily precede the start of the internationalization process, but may occur through a gradual learning process alongside it. And secondly, the results also imply that the conceptualization of network competence by Finnish managers of internationally operating Finnish SMEs is structurally distinct from that of their culturally distinct partner managers in Russia. This study contributes to the literature on SME internationalization in several ways. Firstly, it introduces operationalized organizational competencies to the literature on internationalization of SMEs, which has so far mainly examined the influence of business networking on the internationalization process without having such an organizational viewpoint. Furthermore, this study provides a multi-level analysis of the determinants of successful SME internationalization, by examining various strategic and performance outcomes across the process. These results also contribute to the literature on organizational strategy of internationalizing SMEs, by clarifying how different dimensions of business networking may be optimal in different phases of the internationalization process. Conceptually, the results of this study contribute to the literature on competence development and SME internationalization, by illustrating how the development process of network competence may occur during internationalization process. Thus, they also contribute to the discussion on how SMEs are able to influence the dynamics and structures of their business networks over time. Finally, this study contributes to the literature on the role of culture in the internationalization process, by implying that the cultural background of the manager of the SME may determine whether business networking and network competence is seen as an organizational-level or an individual level capability. The study also includes some additional contributions to the literature on dynamic capabilities in strategic management, and on that of strategic business networks. These include further clarifying the exact nature and tangibility of dynamic capabilities, and being one of the first studies to introduce constructs from both dynamic capabilities and business network literature to the field of international entrepreneurship. And finally, the study also has some contribution on the two streams of literature, in illustrating how both dyadic and network-level capabilities may be relevant, depending on the current strategic goals and market position of the firm. In the present study we explored whether and how the situational factors; emotional states, sexual arousal, and alcohol intoxication influenced the propensity in adults to engage in online sexual contact with children (13 or younger) and adolescents (14 – 17 year olds). The results were compared to a group of adults that had engaged in online sexual contact with adults only (18 or older). We also looked at the variation over time within these situational factors during the online sexual contact with a child, an adolescent, or an adult. The present study was an online self-report survey to the adult populations in Finland, Sweden, and Germany, with a final sample (N = 776) of women and men who were active on the Internet. The participants were asked to report whether, how, and with whom they had engaged in online sexual contact. The results showed that more men than women reported online sexual contact with persons of all age groups, and that the situational factors; emotional states and sexual arousal influenced the propensity in both women and men to engage in online sexual contact with children and adolescents. However, the effects of alcohol intoxication were small and significant only for men. These results indicate that higher levels of emotional state and sexual arousal might increase the propensity to go against social norms and contact children and adolescents online for sexual purposes, but it can also imply that that those who look for online sexual contact online with children and adolescents, are more emotionally and/or sexually aroused than the group that only seek adult company or that these are post-hoc explanations for such sexual activities.

The incidence of superficial or deep-seated infections due to Candida glabrata has increased markedly, probably because of the low intrinsic susceptibility of this microorganism to azole antifungals and its relatively high propensity to acquire azole resistance. To determine changes in the C. glabrata proteome associated with petite mutations, cytosolic extracts from an azole-resistant petite mutant of C. glabrata induced by exposure to ethidium bromide, and from its azole-susceptible parent isolate were compared by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Proteins of interest were identified by peptide mass fingerprinting or sequence tagging using a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Tryptic peptides from a total of 160 Coomassie-positive spots were analyzed for each strain. Sixty-five different proteins were identified in the cytosolic extracts of the parent strain and 58 in the petite mutant. Among the proteins identified, 10 were higher in the mutant strain, whereas 23 were lower compared to the parent strain. The results revealed a significant decrease in the enzymes associated with the metabolic rate of mutant cells such as aconitase, transaldolase, and pyruvate kinase, and changes in the levels of specific heat shock proteins. Moreover, transketolase, aconitase and catalase activity measurements decreased significantly in the ethidium bromide-induced petite mutant. These data may be useful for designing experiments to obtain a better understanding of the nuclear response to impairment of mitochondrial function associated with this mutation in C. glabrata.
